Actually the screen resolution is based on your personal opinion. For example, I have the 1680x1050 screen for my Dell 1520. It is grainy, but you won't notice it after a while.

Is there a Significant difference in performance for the 8600GT between the 256 MB ddr2VRAM
    512 MB DDR2Vram
    256 MB DDR3VRAM
(512MV DDR3Vram (didnt see it yet))

I am looking at a notebook with an 15 inch screen and 4 gig ram +this intel 1gigturbo ram (whatever it is) running on Vista home premium 32 bit

Does anybody know the significant differences

The 256MB GDDR3 card is clocked higher than DDR2 versions. You'll see more of an increase in performance at higher resolutions (read: >1280x800). In many cases you can overclock the DDR2 card to near GDDR3 clock speeds, though.

So the DDR3 Card is faster than both DDR2 Cards, right?

Thanks for that information, it helped me quite a lot

Most people say that the GDDR3 version can achieve higher performance because GDDR3 runs much cooler than DDR2. While the DDR2 version can be OC'd to stock GDDR3 clocks, the GDDR3 can be OC'd even higher.

The DDR2 version of the 8600m GT will not hit 700 on the memory...You'll be lucky to hit 500 ~ 550 to be perfectly honest. The performance gain from the GDDR3 is quite significant to be honest. I have both cards for my C90S...and I'd have to say that the GDDR3 was worth the price I paid lol.

    Prolly yeah.

Because I can run Oblivion > everything high, everything exept AA on. (HRD not Bloom switched on, because you cant have em both)
I can switch HDR to Bloom and use 4xAA but that doesn't look as good as having HDR on.

And fps is 24~35 in wild, 28~39 in towns and 45~80 in caves/dungeons.
    (My card is OC'd aswell.)

    Mate,

from what I've heard, the average score for a Geforce 8600m GS is around 3k on the 3DMark06.

But OC'ing it a little bit you can reach over 3.5k for sure.

well, i got the highest rating for a 1280x1024 default 3dmark06 test. not sure that counts for much...considering since i went up against 256mb 8600 gs's.

Nvidias website is actually wrong... there it says your vga memory should be 700MHz, but this is the speed of a GDDR3 memory... and usually the Geforce 8600m GS comes with a DDR2 memory instead. So, your vga is OK, don't worry about it. ;)

DMC3 runs fine. generally around 55- 60 FPS, 35-45 during cut scenes, and I believe the game has some framerate issues, like during the fight with teh first boss the FPS will drop from 50+ to around barely 20's. It is still playable just not as enjoyable as it was before teh boss shows up, and the lag ends once the boss gets defeated. weird stuff.

the reason is because your version of the 8600m GS is gddr2 like mine, which is clocked at 500/400/1000. The gddr3 version is 600/700/1200. We can get a max of like ~3400 in 3dmark i'm assuming.

Of course you can, its a old game, even my crappy 8400m gs can max it out at 1280x800 running silk smooth except when theres intensive explosions. Btw I got really frustrated how crippled the 8400 is so I just sold my laptop and im getting a vostro 1500 with the 8600m gt, I just cant wait :)

I've reached a stable I would start at a max 590/490 (I had that stable in XP, but a bit unstable in Vista with my 8600, probably depends on the drivers too) and step it down from there.

What games are you trying to play?...overclocking may be a bit superfluous.

Yeah, I played the Demo I could get high on most settings at 1280, if I remember correctly not shadows, shaders, and one of two other settings (definitely turn AA off, and keep AF low). I was getting around 40-50 fps with an OC of 590/490.

As long as you have the 8600GT (mine is DDR2), you should be fine.

Zip, with an OC, you can do better than medium settings, provided you're not trying to run in at max res, and you figure out which settings to keep lower.

    2 Duo Core
    8600m GT

I'm playing everything high, with 4x AA and getting 20-30 fps. It's still playable, and I shouldn't be complaining. Just wondering if any drivers could add a few fps. xD

Seph, you need to drop the AA. Put it on 2x or none. Then you should be able to max everything out, except for AF. You will get 100+ FPS that way (even though your refresh rate is likely lower).

Dond, I had driver crashes when I was playing Crysis MP Beta with an OC. They were sporadic, and came less frequently if at all with different drivers...it's all hit and miss depending on your system, it's build, which version of window's you're running, which drivers you're running, and the extent of your OC. =P
