So my friend tried it on his Retina Macbook Pro under Windows (Yes, a GT650M XD). The driver installed and he got the option for G-SYNC. Opens the demo, works fine, when he clicks the "G-SYNC" tickbox the monitor starts to go schizo. Apparently it can work for like 10 seconds but after that the monitor just gives up and restarts.
This is a 2013 Retina Macbook Pro outputting to a Dell U2713HM over Displayport 1.2. Now the fact that the monitor was freaking out suggests to me that it was indeed experiencing some sort of frequency change but it just didn't like it.
The eDP displays in these notebooks are direct links from the MXM module so it's more viable for it to work, ESPECIALLY since AMD's original Freesync demo ran on a modded notebook and it's common knowledge that VBLANK has been supported on certain notebook displays for some time. Now it could be that these GT72s or whatever with LG eDP displays support VBLANK. I would not be surprised if many of the others that tried it have LVDS displays which it plain doesn't work with, there are apparently issues with SLI notebooks (whether or not it matters if you have one or two GPUs enabled I don't kn0w). Optimus doesn't work because you go through the Intel adapter to get to the screen (hence why Optimus is ****ing awful and notebook vendors should stop using it).
I really, really want to try this on my LG 27EA83-D but unfortunately I have an R9 290X and my laptop with a 650M only has VGA/HDMI out so no luck there. Other PC in my house uses a 7950.
I'm really beginning to wonder if this is true and it's being downplayed by people in the review realm because they can't believe that Nvidia would outright lie about G-SYNC. I mean the fact that no one calls out Nvidia on the fact that Freesync works perfectly with a simple firmware tweak to a standard monitor irks me.
Now of course the official modules are probably a means of Nvidia controlling the product pipeline and making sure there is a guarantee the monitor is going to work; as the Macbook example shows, and the complete variance in success from different people with different configs, there is a high likeliness that a normal setup won't work. But that doesn't mean that the module is required for the function, I'm calling serious ******** on that.
I can't believe no one with a desktop has tried this yet. Tonnes of people with 970s/980s and surely some of them have DP 1.2 monitors, particularly LG.

Someone over at OCN got this to work ( link). Maybe this is actually legit?
-
Just rare DP monitors and some eDP panels.
Could you post a smartphone video with Macbook?catix likes this. -

My GT72 has the LG display. Are you sure this will work? Is there a chance of this drivers screwing my 980m?

no. he edited post and now I see it's, not TN as he claimed before
-
What you are seeing is triple buffered V-Sync, not variable refresh. Perhaps you did not pick up on the visual judder that is a telltale sign of V-Sync.

I had to edit post above

It worked on my GT72! LG IPS display

I have a LG IPS display in my P650SE but since it uses optimus I'm assuming this will not work.

What version of the driver do I need to enable GSync? I'm using 344.24 and a Sharp 4k panel. I would like to keep my overclockability though.

No guarantee that it'll enable G-Sync for you, though. So far the only confirmed reports are from ASUS G751J and MSI GT72 notebooks with the LG IPS panel.iaTa likes this. -
Cannot install. Says no compatible hardware found
Which obviously can't be true, since I have a 980M inside.
-
you need to take nvlddmkm.sys from it and paste to your 344.24 installer folder. what laptop?
-
Clevo P751ZM
Edit: Found a nvlddmkm.sy_ file... I guess that's the one?
Edit 2: Well that was not a good idea... Screen entered an infinite blinking loop and I had to boot into safe mode and remove the driver to fix it.Last edited: Jan 31, 2015 -
cant u just add the 980M ID to the respective .inf in the modded g-sync driver? or is the 980M already in there?
-
Last chance is a inf mod. -
Back on topic: G-SYNC is quite incredible. I was skeptical, too. It's a game changer. Unless you've experienced it firsthand, you have no idea what you're missing. I have a 144Hz TN G-SYNC panel (BenQ XL2420G) and one of these "BGA turd CPU" and "never be a proper gaming laptop" ASUS G751s that works with this alpha driver for G-SYNC. It's quite incredible!
The thread over at Overclock.net has links to the driver if anyone is having problems getting it. Gamenab.net took it down.Void364 likes this. -

Same if you use a modded inf too. -
-
Ok time to edit the inf and give that a try.
I'll have a look at it for you now.
EDIT: Ah you're trying to install an older driver with the newer sys file. That will be your problem.metacarpus likes this. -
Dunno if Win 8 vs 8.1 makes any difference. I am running the latter.
-
Have you tried installing the Gamernab driver: http://1pcent.com/?p=564
Or download v347.25 from here:
http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/31326-v34725-windows-8-64bit-nvidia-mobile-oem/
And replace the sys file yourself. -
That's a 347 series driver, which means no overclocking?
-
Yeah but worth it to test.
If G-Sync works I can edit the v346.87 inf for you. -
You have to mod the INF to install 346.87 on your Clevo.
-
What's the device ID for your 980M?
e.g. [DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_157D1043] NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M -
Ok, installed the Gamenab.net Unified 347.25 Driver but G-Sync did not appear in the NVIDIA Control Panel (under the Display dropdown is where I think it should show up, right?). So I guess the Sharp 4K is just not compatible.
Here's the device ID:Attached Files:

Ok try this inf with v346.87 (remove .txt extension).

Well, it did install now, but the screen went all rainbowy:
(taking a screenshot results in normal display, so it's just the hardware it seems. Therefore I had to take a photo instead to show you what it looks like).Attached Files:

Hmmm that's weird.
Did you do a clean install? -
Can you try setting the screen resolution to 1080p.
-
So far, only LG 17" IPS panels have been confirmed to be working with the driver - so it's not a surprise that you're having issues, metacarpus.
-
Yep, Safe Mode -> Display Driver Uninstaller -> Reboot into normal mode -> Install driver -> Rainbows
-
Changing resolutions did not help.
-
Ok try this inf.

Gimme a bit, downloading the latest Hotkey to see if it enables the DPI scaling feature. Clevo's asian FTP link is the only one that works and it's downloading <100kb/s so it's gonna be a bit.
Btw, I did try to check if GSync had appeared in the control panel during the rainbowy mode, but I did not see it (granted it was hard to see anything at all). But I'll give this a go too.
Also, what happened to the Edit button for posts? Am I the only one not seeing it anymore? -
Yeah the edit and delete functions seem to have been disabled.
Does anyone know the device ID of the 980M's in the ASUS and MSI where this is working.
I want to check all of the associated inf settings. -

Sure, gimme a few. Waiting for UDK to download now lol.

Just checked my np9377 and it is using an edp display from ChiMei, N173HGE-E11. Needless to say I couldn't get it to work since I run gtx980m in SLI.
Any chance to get it working if I disable SLI from Nvidia control panel?
Alternatively any way to install the LG ips screen on my notebook? -

Nvidia G-Sync hack - it works on every display supporting DisplayPort 1.2
