The thing is, Metro in very high with tessalation and DOF is very hard hitting. Nvidia only has an advantage in tessalation, and DX11 is more than just tessalation. That's why in games like Lost Planet 2 where most DX11 rely in Tessalation, the nvidia 460m gets up to 50% performance increase (albeit still rather unplayable on both cards). Both on other games, you will just get similar performance.

These mobile GPUs just don't have the power for DX11 on its full glory.

on a side note, i just bought a 15.6" laptop for my bro with an ATI 5650 1GB and metro ran at 9fps full setting with DX11. the resolution was 1360x768 (maxed)

AA was AAA and Anisotropic Filtering was only 4x.
How come i got same average FPS as those reported for the 460m and 5870m ?
    laptop is Toshiba L655: Core i5 2.6Ghz, 3GB RAM and ATI 5650m

can anyone on the other end with a 460m benchmark metro 2033 at full settings so we can confirm?

The reason is resolution. I get around 10-13 fps average on 1920x1080. thats a HUGE difference.

For reference, at the same resolution you tested, on very high, I get around 26fps average.

Remember the resolution costs a lot of performance, specially in mobile GPUs.

mostwanted115 based on the performance your looking for in a laptop you may want to wait for Next gen of mobile GPUs or even the one after that ;)..

Your taking the most demanding games known to man and expecting decent performance and even worst on all single card machines ...

The M17x with 2x5870s struggles to run Metro in DX11 at native res with most options on...

Or build a desktop might be your best choice and stick with the machine you just bought for your portable needs :)..

am just comparing and studying facts, not necessarily want to play the game at max settings and on a laptop. Just seeing how far can the mobile technology stretch.

So Ryzeki u got 26fps using 1360x768 resolution with max DX11 settings? great. any idea how the 460m performed at these settings in metro 2033? Quadzilla did you try that?

EDIT: having tried a 5000 series mobile card just now, am definitely buying a Nvidia laptop next time just to enjoy PhysX effects in BAD COMPANY 2 and some tessellation in aliens versus predator 2010. to tell you the truth, the explosion and scattering effects looked amazing even on my current ATI 5650M which hasnt got any PhysX engine...so i bet it's gonna be awesome with Nvidia.

Metro 2033 should run the same on the 460m.

Remember that physx reduces performance moderately, specially on these mobile GPUs. Also, I wasn't aware Bad company 2 had physx settings, considering my previous laptop was a nvidia GTX260m and I never noticed any option for it. If it has such option, and you enable it, you will hinder your performance and while it looks good, it won't help you enjoy a fluid experience.

If you want to enjoy physx try it with Batman AA, they do use nice effects but I never could run it with my GTX260m fluid enough.

Bad Company 2 doesn´t use PhysX, they use their own physics engine. Both ATI and Nvidia has the physics in Bad Company 2. Try Mafia 2 instead for some great PhysX effects.

BC2 is a modified Havok engine. And is a Havok featured game.

And yes, any PhysX game will run worse on non-Nvidia because of how PhysX works. It's purposefully broken on non-Nvidia, running on CPU, it it's only single threaded and problem is no matter how fast CPU is, it doesn't matter. And because CPU and GPU are in parallel processing for game, GPU gets bottlenecked. This is neither the fault of CPU or GPU, but purely on PhysX. There is an interesting report on PhysX on how this was all done on purpose. x87 instructions FTW!
    - Report concluded that if PhysX was actually coded for efficiency, PhysX would run on multi-threaded CPU or on GPGPU faster than Nvidia's PhysX hardware.
    - So it's double the fun. Not only will PhysX not run as well on non-Nvidia. But it will also be the cause of bottleneck for non-Nvidia GPU. Why else do you think a game developer has to be PAID to use it, they probably wouldn't want to use it to begin with, but MONEY, MORE MONEY!

That doesn't make sense. It's not widely adapted. PhysX isn't popular. Point was only in PhysX games does this occur. Havok and other physics engines are far more widely adapted. And even then, games that use Havok have better physics than PhysX like BC2 and anything by Valve. Sorry to burst your bubble, those games run on AMD better also ;p

But enjoy your wait for the G53 and have fun with it. That's all that matters.

That would be impossible for a single 480 GTX to crush the 5970 because ATI 5970 are dual video card and the 480 is a single card...so do you think it would crush it?

And SLI 480GTX would actually be better than a 5970 but at what cost?

Yea i no it would crush it but i was just saying cos of the few stating the power of the 480 like nothing else beats it. However the power from the 480 nvidia was makking, you'd of think it.
my next laptop i was thinking of going for the 460m but really i want the next top end ati because the most popular games atm ati have been getting better frames like bc2 etc.

I'll be getting a 460M soon, originally, my plan was to go with a mobility 5850, but they're considerably harder to come across. Both are still great cards. I think all this talk about performance (at some point) becomes counter-intuitive, the point of having this GPU in a laptop is to have gaming capability ~ that capability comes at the cost of a lower-resolution.

This post is to help me consolidate my thoughts & feelings about both cards while returning this thread back to the original topic that's been derailed by talk of the GTX 480 Fermi architecture & common misconceptions such as comparing a single GPU card (GTX 480) to a dual GPU card such as a 5970.

Being able to use advanced GPU features like Anti-Aliasing and High/Ultra high details great, but it usually comes at a cost. Personally, when you opt for a gaming laptop, it's my consensus that you opt for playability ~ not prettyness since it's widely acknowledged that you'll generally get a desktop computer that'll perform at a superior level for 1.5-2.0 years w/ the average cost of the price of the laptop models that incorporate either of these GPU's.

From what I've heard & read the GTX 460M still has a considerable amount of thermal headway even if it does lose to the Mobility 5850/5870. What's also important to realize as many have suggested is that the 460M is designed to combat the 5850, not the 5870. Furthermore, as far as the casual user is concerned, there's more of a "Meh" sentiment as far as "Win/Lose" goes since typically comparison between GPU's like the 5850 and the GTX 460M are usually done through benchmarks & not actual gameplay.

As many people have pointed out PhysX is a moot graphics engine that really only comes into play when games are sponsored by nVidia. Games that make use of PhysX are rare, in addition, it's considerably harder for a single GPU (the 460M) in this case to act as both the primary card and the PhysX card. Furthermore, if I've been reading this thread correctly, PhysX is a software-graphics engine, which means that it can be hacked or emulated on AMD/Radeon cards if totally necessary.

On the other hand, The mobility 5850/5870 seem to be designed (and benchmarks) show most of you will agree, I think, that it comes out on top. What's worth noting, I think, (though I could be wrong), is that the GTX 460M is a newer card; it's drivers haven't had as much of a chance to stabalize unlike the mobility 5850's which has been out longer.

The nVidia 460M really seems to lend itself to (in comparison with the mobility 5850) to more g raphic-design, video-editing, tasks of those nature that can utilize the CUDA hardware not present in the mobility radeon 5850/5870. Otherwise, when you look at it from both sides of the spectrum both cards are able to accelerate the decoding of HD Video-Formats & are reasonably equal in that respect.

Anyway, I realize I've challenged some preconceptions as far as benchmarks go, but I generally tend to lurk anyway, so I just wanted to return the topic back to the tracks so I can learn more interesting stuffs XD.

Umm no. Graphic design/Video Editing software support both AMD and Nvidia. And both of these are more CPU than GPU. The only time GPU probably is used for preview, but for final work, it will likely be CPU. Especially for video encoding as x264 or any encoder based on it, is much faster and higher quality on CPU than Nvidia's CUDA crap. Same for video decoding. It's pure marketing BS at this point, maybe someday will be different. But more than likely parallel processing using both CPU and GPU will be the future where Intel and AMD will take the lead on that since Nvidia has no CPU development and cannot by law.

For the things you are interested it matters not what you get, just get whatever you can afford, get the most for your money. IMO get the HD5850M. It's far cheaper than the GTX 460M and you can OC the HD5850M in some instances to even exceed an overclocked HD5870M. And then spend your saving on something that matters. The most beefy and powerful CPU will do you a lot more good than CUDA will at this point. Especially if you are going to be doing any encoding and rendering!!!

New UK Qosmio's confirmed as 460m same spec as the past just with the 2630m.

Waiting for them to land as stock with the retailer I have a £1300 credit note for and a discount code then think I'll grab myself one unless the ASUS g73 sw lands first (doubtful)

I believe they are 1280x1024. I think anything under 1280x1024 (including 1366x768) doesn't give an adequate representation of the benchmark score.

Depends on the benchmark, anything you see 3DMark 11 on will be 720p standard, 3DMark 06 and 3DMark Vantage will be 1280x1024 as StrikeSaber47 said.
