Haha, wait for me! I'll join you after selling my M17X and getting the x7200![]()

Sounds like a plan
..
You should order the X7200 . I have been working on Speedy to order one but he wants no part of it since it does not have RGB... I personally like the screens in the Clevo and G73 but i can understand switching back to an inferior panel will be hard for some people..
-
But arguing with you won't do anything if I remember from past.
But for others, look up the benchmarks for yourself. AnandTech did a nice review of the GTX 460. -
480 desktop cards crush my 5870s but not 460s ...
SLI does scale much better in many titles then XF but i didnt see the need to run out and buy 480s since im not exactly hurting for power on my DT ..
480s ran Way to hot and were to power hungry as well so unless i went straight to water on my tower then it would have been a mess anyhow...
Ziddy i agree with most of your comments on the 460m and ill know more next week . i am not bias about which is better and ill be testing far more then just a small amount of games that have been tested thus far to get a better understanding of just how well(or not) the 460 performs..
I understand your feelings towards the 460m in general and that Nvidia should have released a superior product to the 5870 after all this time but yeah that did not seem to happen.. It will be decent though that much i am certain on ..
-
That is nice to see all those new laptops on display with the 400M series. That is what I was waiting for, and it looks like many of these laptops will be coming in December, or before December. That means I might possibly wait and buy a laptop with a 400M series card instead of a 300M series card, unless the prices drop significantly for the models with the 300M series cards.
Even if there were GF104 samples out months ago, who cares? This has zero relevance. Nvidia driver support was not OFFICIALLY added for the GF104 until the latest drivers which were released in July. Those early GF104 samples were using pre-release or beta drivers.
Regardless of what you think, changing the driver code and compiler to fully utilize the superscalar design (yes it is a design change, a physical hardware change compared to the GF100 rather than the strange setup term you used) of the GF104 takes many months. It is a rather significant driver and compiler change that must occur for the drivers. -
And where do get off on saying OMG the GF100 based Quadro is so amazing it destroys FirePro. Uh, Cinebench shows the FirePro making a mockery of the Quadro 6000. What the review and Cinebench shows, AMD's OpenGL performance is better and real time performance also better. What the other benchmarks show is how poorly supported AMD Stream is. But that's why you pay the hefty fee for Nvidia, widely supported CUDA. FirePro V880 costing almost THREE TIMES LESS than the Quadro 6000. FirePro V8800 $1,499 vs Quadro 6000 $4,999
- FirePro V8800 still has higher memory bandwidth 147 vs Quadro 6000's 144
- And for the same price as Quadro 6000, you can get a FirePro V9800...
- AMD for professional is no different than gaming. If you want to spend big bucks, you go for Nvidia. You are on a budget, AMD has their offering.
ROFL, GF100 Pro Card so amazing that real time performance was disappointing...
- This review proves the AMD solution is right on par with Quadro. The difference being software support.
None of what you said is fact, only YOUR OPINION. -
So basically, you're saying - let's buy an inferior and more expensive card now and in its performance will gradually increase during many months to come. Hmmm.... No.
We just got an answer from HP regarding the upcoming Quadro FX5000M (based on GF100). It's not gonna be compatible with the DreamColor2 (30-bit IPS screen).
Not only that, it also costs 6x more than M7820.
I don't care who wears the crown (even if in truth AMD, Intel and Nvidia are one company - Shadow Syndicate and they create the balance of forces intentionally) and as long as there's a card that performs better for my needs right now and doesn't costs much - count me in. In 2009 I voted for Nvidia. 2010 is for the Red's. 2011? - we'll see. But I won't pay 900-2000$ for a single GPU, even if it offers 2x the performance (not gonna happen
). Today, the most powerful card is 480M (~10% above the M5870). Now, let's wait and see how drivers improve the situation for both sides.
-
Oh man Ziddy you are a stubborn one. Here is some benchmarks for you, it beats the 5870 crossfire in Metro 2033, Bad Company 2, Alien vs Predator and so on.
GTX 460 SLI vs. HD 5870 CFX @ 5760x1200 - GeForce GTX 460 SLI vs. Radeon HD 5870 CFX @ 5760 | [H]ard|OCP -
5760x1200
I would never ever consider HardOCP to be a credible source. AnandTech shows otherwise, whom I personally consider far more credible than the morons at HardOCP.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3809/nvidias-geforce-gtx-460-the-200-king
But anyways, congratz to Nvidia for making a decent card about 1 year after the party started with EyeFinity and DX11. The next gen is just around the corner. -
-
Yes hard for you to catch ziddy, the desktop GTX 460 scales awesome in SLI.
Deagleson, well the notebook GTX 460m might scale as good as the desktop 460 in SLI, meaning it would beat the the 5870m in crossfire. -
Hard for you can't admit that AnandTech proves otherwise.
And does it even matter? Show me a SLI 460M notebook... Only the Qosmio and G53 and G73 are announced to use single 460M. And by the time 460M SLI is even out, HD6xxx likely be released. Currently Nvidia is always behind, so the argument is always going to be cyclical, never ending.
-
So the benchmarks at hardocp doesn´t count, only those at anandtech?
-
What did you prove by that? -
@ Magnus72
That would be great, indeed.
Hmm, proper Crossfire scaling would be nice too. ;D
Tried a second ATI HD 5770 on my desktop some time ago, and while it did perform like a champ, it was not the "boost" in performance that i was expecting.
(Borrowed the card from a friend, same make and manufacturer.)
But is was a while ago and newer drivers may have improved since then. -
-
Since that resolution is very high and the desktop 5870 has higher bandwidth than the desktop GTX 460. Still the GTX 460 SLI beats it in some games and is cheaper. Nvidia reallly succeded with the GTX 460.
What I am more interested in is the scaling of SLI for the GTX 460m, so I definitely look forward to benchmarks with the GTX 460m vs the 5870m Crossfire. -
Lol, just noticed that the Nvidia cards in the test linked by Magnus72 were OC'ed.
End of story. Do you know that OC'ed MR5870 CF hits 19K in Vantage?
Let's stop the BS talk. The 460M/470M/480M SLI isn't far away, so benchmarks will be available soonish. -
That said, the GTX 4xxM SLi should scale well in the notebook platform. That's not to count out ATi because the Juniper cores (which the desktop 57xx and Mobility 58xx are based on) actually scale better in CfX than the Cypress cores (desktop 58xx). -
Yeah, HardOCP is not a very reliable source with that particular test. Their Crossfire results are even less in that review compared to their previous CF HD5870 reviews. It is also largely the only site which shows too much of a win for the GTX460 unlike other sites.
In the end, the GTX460 SLI is a WIN combination. It does not need to defeat HD5870, because they provide alot of performance for little price. They even match a single HD5970 (slower than CF HD5870). -
^^ It's funny to see these types of conversations 1 month before the HD6000 launch. So, after 8+ months delay Nvidia is trying to desperately battle against a year old tech. If AMD keeps their pricing tendency this time as well - I don't envy the Greens.
-
I am throughly enjoying my HD5870m right nowspecially since I get to game OC without any issues. If I can manage to get an HD6000 series inside my lappy, and they actually end up worth it, I will upgrade. But that will probably mean getting a targus 180w PSU.
-
If you're thoroughly enjoying your 5870, what the hell is wrong with the 460m? Its performance is very close to the 5870, and it's already confirmed to run much cooler.
I think you're all just trying to justify your expensive laptops to yourselves, there's no reason we can't be content with either the 5870 or the 460m. -
.. I see you keep saying over and over about the new ATI cards lol but i see no mention of the Mobile cards so soon so please do share about who will be releasing them even in 2010 ?
... 6870m ? 2010 ? please do tell because i want one this year ...
-
Did Nvidia burn down your house like they did Ziddys ?...
Oh now i know why, its because the Quadro cards wont work on the IPS panel in his HP Elitebook...
-
Wow... what a mess, lol.
let's see...
1) I did say - "HD6000 is 1 month away" - regarding the desktop benchmarks talk
The mobile parts will be launched in 3-4 months.
2) Did I say that something was wrong with 460M?
I said - "these talks are funny"You can be content with any card you want, that's your business. For now, you're just speculating, and I'm content with my GPU's, but that doesn't mean I can't grab a 470M or two if they perform very well.
3)Quad, I don't have grudges against Nvidia or AMD, it's just interesting to observe the tides
4) And well, even if the Quadro cards perform 3x my FirePro and work with the DC , ill probably skip emThe entire system costs just over 2k, less than a FX5000M..eek.
-
It does not run cooler than my HD5870, that's for sure. That particular detail depends a lot on the cooling system. Thankfully though, the G73JW runs cooler out of the box than JH. That's a welcome change to users that don't like messing with the innards. I think it also helps that the GPU is quite huge.
At this point, either of the HD5870m or the 460m are the recommended high end cards due to performance/price. But I just wish the 460m was a better card. Sorry if it seems I am just bashing it, I guess I am just taking off a bit of frustration out of the whole deal
I was even gonna get a 480m before the radeon, but the price was just too much haha. -
I think the drivers needs to mature, it was the same story with the desktop 8800GTX which didn´t perform as I expected when I bought it, but after a few updated GPU drivers the GPU crushed every single game out there until Crysis came.
So I am eager to see if the case is the same with the GTX 460m, now of course the GTX 460m won´t be any revolution like the desktop 8800GTX was when it came. However a increase in performance is possible after a few revisions of GPU drivers. -
After he switched to the 285m GTX noise went down completely and also the overheating disappeared. He mentioned that had to do with a "better fit" of the 285m into this Sager laptop model.
I am also looking to buy a new laptop, and have been trying to find out all benchmarks as possible. This site looks pretty good (best one I found so far, lots of detailed info), but the 460m, 450 GTS and other are not there, neither the Mobility HD 5970 for instance. (last updated was August 31st 2010, so I believe new reviewed models will take place soon).

If you know of any other site with good GPU benchmarks, showing the Mega Texels, Mega Pixels, etc., please share!
Cheers.. -
5970 does not exist for laptops as far as I know. -
For benchmarks, well I don't know of any good sites so maybe you can go to individual forums here for each laptop so you can get an idea of how it fares in games.
285m, 460m, HD5870m are all very close in performance. There is no mobility HD5970m. -
Here is a great site that also allows overclocking to see what the fillrate lands at and so on for both mobile and desktop GPU´s. You can also directly compare desktop to mobile GPU at this site.

Nvidia just released the 260.52 GeForce Drivers update, looks like it's a major one.
Tech ARP - NVIDIA Release 260 GeForce Drivers
I'm not sure if this applies to notebook GPUs, but at least the desktop 400 series seems to get a nice boost. -
^^ That's a nice one and should work with the notebook 400 series as well. Can't wait to see the first proper benches.
-

-
Ahoy Mateys!
I'd like to see them 460M's vs 285M's benches. Something's telling me thar ain't mucha tuh difference, swabbies! -
Performance-wise, yeah, they're going to have a lot in common. -
Not really, it's about ~10% faster than the GTX 285m. It's just that for a long time, the 285m was the only high-end GPU Nvidia was offering.
-
Another GTX 460M notebook has been announced: The Toshiba Qosmio!
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/22/toshiba-qosmio-x500-landing-september-26-with-gtx-460m-graphics/
All models will have GTX 460M standard; the base model with i5 will retail for $1,299. -
Like the price but hate the looks.
Why are all TOSHIBA gaming laptops RED in the wrong places. -
I dont think it looks all that bad honestly and certainly WAY better then old one ..
I saw one in person a few times at Microcenter and the only thing i did not like about it was the screen... Way to dim for my tastes... Hopefully they changed screen manufactures .. -
-
The red is way too flashy in those photos, probably because of bright studio lights. In real life, it's almost a burgundy color, and very attractive. The black surface is crisscrossed with subtle white lines, and the laptop looks very elegant, like some exotic car.
@Quadzilla, the 1080p screen is indeed very dim. Fortunately, the base model has a lower-res screen that's just fine. -
So are you ordering soon ? .. Will be interested to hear you impressions since i know you have been waiting sometime for this
..
Good luck though as overall i think it looks pretty decent and people would have to see it in person to pass final judgment.. -
Heh, I'm still going to wait awhile till the price drops abit. I don't need it right away and I hate paying retail prices.
I'll probably get it in Nov or Dec from Amazon.
One thing though...can I take the 460M overclock numbers from the G73JW and use them on this? I know there are difference versions of GPUs manufacturers use... -
Every GPU is different, some OC better than others so a little trial and error is what you have to do to see how your GPU handles different clocks.
-
How do you tell if the GPU's overclocking well? Temps, screen jerkiness?
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
If it doesn't crash while doing something.
Temperatures are another matter. You can have a stable overclock but still be overheating your card. -
I wouldn't over-volt. Under volting is one thing. But if I could think of the fastest way to brick my GPU aside from flashing a bad vBios, it would be to over-volt.
And as others said, GPU are just binned for a target speed, not for overclocking. So if it meets the specifications, it gets a HD5870M label, but that doesn't mean it can run at 800/1200 as mine can.
