I might actually replace my desktop gaming rigs with iMac 27" Intel Core i7-3770, 16GB RAM and GTX 680 MX...
Why? Well because nothing is really pushing desktop hardware any more, I've had my Rampage IV Extreme, Intel Core i7-3960X and GTX 690 for a while now and I simply can't do it any justice. I barely play games anymore because we seldom get anything for the PC in the first place, and those I play tends to not push the hardware at all... Having such powerful, noisy hardware draining loads of power for basically nothing is just a huge waste in my opinion.
I'm considering building a Mini-ITX, low power Haswell with dedicated GPU in the lines of a GTX 660 - GTX 680 or something, saves me a lot of space and power.. Or simply go with the iMac 27" which saves me even more space, looks awesome, features a really nice display and is capable of running Windows 8 natively using EFI so there won't be any problem getting gaming to work flawlessly.. The big question is whether the GTX 680 MX will be able to cut it performance wise or not, considering the 2560x1440 resolution and everything.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
havent you saw the gaming figures? decide for yourself, and you can always overclock it, according to the posting the temps are fine and the cooling doesnt make a lot of noise, very large headroom in there for some ocing
-
Maybe try surround at 7680x1600, your computer will suffer!
About the 680MX, I really hope nvidia brings it to a 100w TDP on an MXM card. Is it solder on a mac or its mxm? -
-
It'll be interesting to see the difference of the 680MX vs the 8970M. -
Well at least its an earlier version of the iMac. -

But that was the 2009 iMac with the HD 4670, so nothing to get too excited about. Can't find anything on the new one yet.

- +270/+370 his max OC (without OV)
- 3D11 max temp 87c -
Guessing Apple probably throttled/downclocked the 680MX and really controlling the TDP on it. Also a strangle hold over it, no playing with the 680MX, you get what they want you to have and no more. Still better off getting a 680M on an Alienware/MSI/Clevo and jacking it up sounds to me.
-
Surprised no one has taken any close up pictures of the actual 680mx card yet.
That 3dmark11 score isn't bad but this score on a 680m beats it

but we dont know how far can the 680MX be pushed yet, until someone in this forum get a hand on one that will still be a mystery
-
I was able to push my 680m to about 7900 or so but that was with an OV. Seems the iMac is not the best platform to make the card shine though.
-
Definitely not, unless someone overvolts it in boot camp(bios/windows). -

http://rabook.taobao.com/
here is their site, this one works, but i dont see any 680mx -
hmm, you are right. I think that taobao is kinda like ebay though so perhaps they just don`t offer all the products there like they do in their own shop?
I don`t think they have faked the picture in the thread I linked to so I\m counting on that its coming
But who knows -
think it will come as 780m or 785m, doubt nvidia will release another 600 series card this late
-
780M no doubt
-
yeah i am personally waiting for the 780m, hopefully price isnt too high :S, otherwise i will get the 680m when the price drop a bit more after 780m comes out
-
The site works now
This 680MX will cost additional $478 over 675MX.
-
Sorry Cloudfire, but they corrected it to GTX680M...guess we will have to wait for 7series...
-
Ah, well thats it then. I`m through discussing the 680MX. No more energy is gonna be used on it. Its coming, no its not. Look here its on this website, no they changed it. Just release the damn thing
Thanks Prema. I`m in no hurry anways. Will not buy a new notebook until Haswell is here, and it should be here along with 780M. Good times coming -
what if...what if...780M is also a rebadge...god I hope not.

If the 680MX indeed becomes the 780M, I might need to wait until the GTX 880M comes. That is, if my laptop lives until 2014.

I think they will keep it to 100W so fully unlocked core but with slow 900mhz (or maybe 1000mhz) low voltage memory.

Nvidia should use XDR 2 ram for the 780m. That would deffinitely help powerconsumption.
Imagine two of those in SLI.Pretty sure that'll stay in the realm of dreams though. lol
-
The 680MX is not going to be the 780M, LOL. The 680MX was an experiment for Apple so they could fit all that crap in a thinner screen on the iMac. The 780M is going to be based off the 680M with a slight performance increase, while making it more efficient.
Making the 780M a down-clocked version of the 680MX would be more difficult than basing it off the 680M and improving the architecture, and it would completely restrain us from being able to overclock as much as you do with the current 680M!
Theoretically possible, but not plausible. Don't get your hopes up so high fellas. It's better to be reasonable and then later impressed, rather than unreasonable and later disappointed. Sounds weird, but think "re-brand", and if it's not, WOOT! -
Could possibly be another GeForce 400M > 500M scene, 680M slight OC and become a 780M... Then they go with the same advertisement, "Next gen" blah blah.
-
I'm not saying there won't be any increase in performance, but it probably won't be as substantial as the 580M to 680M leap. -
Well Nvidia is pretty soon out with their Titan GPUs GK110 for consumers.
Geforce Titan, pretty cool name.
I think GTX 780M will be based on it -
That's referring to a desktop GPU, it is completely different.
-
A) I was joking (lol obviously
)
and
B) Mobile GPUs are based on desktop GPUs -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yeah Nvidia don't think it's even the best option for desktops let alone notebooks
Not quite time for a 7 billion transistor chip for mobile yet. -
It's par for the course. Only with every new design and/or die shrink are there appreciable improvements. Haswell from a CPU perspective really won't offer much over Ivy Bridge. But Maxwell from nVidia in 2014 will be a significant improvement, should be twofold over current gen Kepler.
-
-
I agree with HTWing.
If you`re not a bencher or someone who HAVE to own the very latest, there is no need to upgrade from 680M until 880M. Although 780M will have 12% more cores than 680M (I hope) it will be hotter since its the same architecture and same nm.
Maxwell will bring a lot new to the table. Too bad its 2014 :/ -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It does not have to be, look at the 480 to 580 (desktop), getting to know a process and tuning your chip to it can yield some nice improvements.
-
hmm, you are right. I just looked at the techpowerup review of 580, and the jump from 480 to 580 gave 15% better performance but 12% less power consumption. Pretty amazing architecture improvement right there
But wasn`t that (480/480M) one of Nvidia`s mishaps? Could it happen again you think? -
Look at me. Don't even have my system yet and I'm already anticipating the launch of a GPU two generations ahead. -
LOL yeah its easy getting exited about stuff like that when you`re a geek. Sometimes hard too, like having to wait for 2014
Pretty nice beast you have ordered btw. 680M SLI and 3940XM and 512SSD in Raid0. That must have cost a fortune? -

We've got a new challenger for highest laptop benchmarks now
Enjoy the new laptop j.dre!
-
I purchased the SSD's aftermarket, but they are still expensive as hell ($1025).
I just hope I don't have issues again. I ordered three days ago and my order already shipped, which is odd and makes me worry. My first system took two weeks to build, this one took two days.
If I have issues, I will return it and get a desktop.

failwheeldrive Notebook Deity
Yeah, johnksss is pretty legendary lol. It's a wicked laptop anyway, I'm sure you'll love it.
As for the build time, that does sound really quick, but I ordered my M17x on the 15th and it shipped today. When I spoke with one of the guy's at Xotic last week, they told me not to order from Alienware because it would take a month or two for delivery lol. Glad he was wrong.
I think it's just a slow time after the holiday rush, so we get to benefit with quick delivery. My sales rep (Bianca) also gave me free overnight delivery, so I will be getting my new laptop tomorrow -
I'll lock in my prediction now:
The 780M will be a GK114 version of the GK104 680MX.
Nvidia GTX 680MX?
