in shipsim all you do is click a button and it takes a photo for you and saves it. In FSX there is a part where you can look at photo's taken but obviously there are none in there as i don't know how to take them.

Press 'V' to take screenshots in FSX.
You can take as many as you like and they are stored in your 'My Pictures'
    folder

IT's called photograss ;) And it's very nice, adds a lot of detail to grass texture

    Here's a DIRECT download link

If you're not a member of avsim, I can upload it here or PM you

Thanks :D , one other question: when flying at high altitude, do you get squares that are not textured in the distance?

i do sometimes. It happens most when there are built up areas.
What is the box there with passenger details on and what do you use for fps?

to help solve the non textured squares.. it takes a lot of processing power on both the cpu and gpu to load terrain mesh and textures. as long as you are getting 35 fps, lock it a bit lower to 30 or even 28. that will free up processing power and still be smooth.

    FPS= hit shift + z twice

    Here's a solution:

Lower the max visibility. As far as I can see, your visibility is set to "maximum", this is unrealistic, reduce it to 32-48, and you wont see the ugly squared textures :)

If you're having performance issues I'll be glad to help tweak your fs9.cfg

I fly with the real-world weather so I can't set the visibility... If you have any other mean to fix that and improve the performances too I'll gladly accept your help.

The box with the passenger details is an add-on called fspassengers, it's pretty neat, it's not free but you can use it without having to pay for flight departing seattle.
For the fps, just press shift+z until the info you want is displayed :) .

Is there a good, free app to apply addons and extra skins etc for fsx. The one I was using only let me do so many before i had to pay for it.

I got FSX too (deluxe edition), well I love the new ****pits, gauges, the water textures, the way more detailed scenery, the new effects, the new camera system but because i want a smooth experience and the eye-candy( try making your approach and landing at 5-15fps), it'll stay in it's box until a build my desktop.
Noelia could you post a tutorial on how to tweak the fs9.cfg? I remember in the fs2000 time they were like 10 lines to modify to get a boost in performances.

    (and Ayle)

doesn't FS9 already run great on that system?... it should. i have a ifl90 (not mine, lent to me by a friend).. fs9 runs at ALL max setting with addons at 45-60 fps. you don't need any more than that

i've also had FSX on this notebook (2.2GHz, 2gb, 8600m gt, xp home,) and FSX with SP1 on all medium high settings runs at 20-25 FPS. in fact my old notebook with a single core 2gz and radeon 200m played FSX at medium setting at around 20 FPS. so question is.. what's slowing your computers down?

I dunno, overall it's smooth but for some reason the framerate take a hit everytime i get near an airport to the point were the game become barely playable because everything seems to go slower... So I'll stick with fs9 for the time being because of that particular thing and the fact that I'm lazy and don't wan't to move my collection of planes, ai traffic and scenery.

EDIT- Man... when will the FSX passenger mod come out I wonder?

I never understand the quest for triple digit FPS. I have mine locked at 35... If i unlock, my FPS in FS9 with quality high, etc. is around 75. I heard it was true that in FS9 you locked your FPS that it could help improve other aspects of the game (computer focuses more on other aspects than high framerates).

The computer never focuses on higher framerates. The framerate is generated by the performance at your requested settings.

What graphics drivers are you using? And if you are using any modified ones than the HDDVD drive doesn't work; wonder if you are using compatible drivers that also run fsx well. I had trouble with the core drivers Toshiba has for my x205-sli3; Thanks for any assistance, Chip Bayko

Thats all well and good, I guess my point was whats the point of trying to get these high FPS. Something about the human eye not being able to process 30+ FPS (ie it doesnt make a difference?)

Well, I installed SP1 for FSX, and it runs even better at my settings (Graphics high, rest mid). My only problem... it UNDERCLOCKS my card when I play to 275/500. (I always run OC'd 550/650) Anyone else have this problem? When I get back to the home screen, my clocks are back up!

And yes, I can tell a difference between 30 and 60 in most games. Around 45 is when it gets to hard to notice. Anywhere above 60 is out of human eye.

i play fsx all the time and i would just ike to add that some modern fs2004 addon planes will work in fsx, most fs2004 addons i get into fsx work but the ones that dont have problems with the gauges and stuff.

also i plan on joining the USMC as an officer and fly the AH-1w supercobra
i think it would be cool flyng around blowing sht up

I use a Saitek ST290Pro Joystick. I like because i can adjust where my hand goes on it. The 5 button has fallen off a few times but it's ok it just clips back on again. With my current setup i'm getting between 20-35 FPS and I don't really mind it. I'm running FSX with FSX Acceleration and Wales Scenery addon.

I've just google'd images of cyborg joysticks and most of the results look similar to the one I use. I did like the fact that there were extra buttons on the base. Could tune them to do stuff without accidently moving the stick when i dont want to!

Does anyone care to guess if fsx will work on the Dell listed in my signature? I know I'll have the processing power, but will the 8400M GS cut it?

Also, does anyone know the trick to getting CFS3 to work on Vista (it keeps crashing immediately on my gaming desktop)

Of course FSX will *work* on your system. Remember MSFS is very scalable, there are tons of settings for you to tweak, and do trade-off on performance and visual. In your case, 8400M will have to sacrifice a lot of visual effects, no bloom effect, no real-time shadow, set auto-gen, traffic (air, land, sea), land complexity to medium-low...

As for CFS3, have you tried running it under XP?

I am just wondering how good FSX will run on an 8600M GS with the specs below in my sig? I am interested in it, but just wondering how good it will run. I currently have FS9 (not installed on this notebook) (got fs9 for free after mail in rebate :)) So is it worth getting FSX?

    Thanks

Hmm... sort of the response I expected regarding the flight sim. Oh well, I just have to keep reminding myself that gaming was an afterthought when I purchased my laptop :D . I haven't tried FS 9 but from what you guys have been saying it sounds like it may run a fair bit better. As for CFS3, I have tried running it in compatibility mode to no avail. (sigh)

i'm going to do everyone a favor. STAY AWAY FROM FSX. it's complete junk.

the only reason it runs like crap is because it was coded terribly. there are NO updates over FS9. there are so many bugs that it makes it unstable and basically just frustrating. I ran it at 45 fps (when it wasn't freezing and glitching) for 4 months.. then installed it cause it was so bad (and not any different than fs9).

went back to fs9.. installed all my good planes and scenery.. i'm much happier with a BETTER looking and BETTER performing fs9

the couple new planes, default "better" scenery, and missions DO NOT out weight just how crappy FSX really is. Microsoft totally f'd it up.

they say FS11 is being coded from the ground up... but for 2 1/2 years they also said that FSX was DX10...

for now.. i've lost faith in the FS series.

What bug? It ran fine for me... It would be nice if people were more specific about the problems they encountered with a particular program when dissing it.

haha what bug? it would be easier to explain what bugs it doesn't have.

JUST A FEW: atc directing me straight into a mountain, ai planes literally nose diving onto the runway.. and stopping in the middle of taxi for NO reason... and stopping for baggage carts. i called for customer support.. just to see if they had a clue about anything.. they didn't. and the PID number in my copy of FSX is for ZOO TYCOON registered to some 50 year old woman in north Dakota. SP1 ONLY ADDED DUEL CORE SUPPORT which should have been there to begin with. I LOST 7-8 with SP2 and it made night lighting look like S&!*.
the new CRJ ****pit and systems are completely wrong.. they didn't even try. the gauges still suck and are not anywhere near smooth.. even though 3rd party developers came up with smooth gauge tech. 3 years ago.
the king air isn't updated at all. there is still the same flight planner, atc, procedures, weather, 2d clouds, default trees (again still 2d)... all from fs9 and fs8. the only thing that has any polygons are the planes.. the vid card should be able to nap while rendering FSX. why does a xml and flash menu take nearly 2 min to load with a 3gb/s 7200rpm hd?

IT'S NOT DX10, there is NO "LIVING WORLD" .. microsoft lied for 2 1/2 years

the water looks totally fake..even though that is one of its "main" features, the hole ocean looks like a swimming pool.

the whole program is coded super bad so it takes away so much performance

virtual skipper had realistic water with reflections and it was dynamic and calculated in REAL TIME.. with NO performance impact... 5 YEARS AGO.

x-plane's environment and water (v9) is MUCH more realistic. it's processing volumetric dynamic cloud movement, lighting from one source(to simulate the sun), ALL of the planes aerodynamics and gauges, and ai (with x-traffic) in REAL TIME. and it uses 1/3 the processing power that FSX does at medium settings.

the ONLY good thing about FSX are the missions. some people say they are arcadish.. but i think they are actually pretty realistic.

oh yeah.. it also totally f'd up A LOT of my other essential programs... CAD stuff, by replacing a bunch of dll's without asking or me knowing.. that problem took me a good 3 months and two reformats to sort out.

    EDIT: haha it edited ****pit..
