Depends on the machine. Alienware and Aorus both have high refresh rate 15" screens (120hz). I'm not sure about Clevo and MSI.

ThePerfectStorm Notebook Deity
From what people are saying, the 120Hz G-Sync panel on the GT73 is TN. Is this true?
Also, what is the performance difference between a 6700 (non-k) and a 6820hk? Is it worth going for a 6700 for a reduced thermal footprint compared to the 6700k?
Also as a side note, @D2 Ultima, will undervolting save the Aero 14 when it gets its 1060?
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk -
6700k is unlocked. So you can over clock it if you ever wanted. Worst case you could just underclock it to whatever the 6700 is and it should be equal. Also keep in mind that you can probably get a decent undervolt on it which really helps thermal performance if you don't plan on over clocking.
Edit: if just between 6700 and 6820hk, assuming you don't plan on tinkering or over clocking, imo 6700 is better.
Sent from my SM-G935T using TapatalkThePerfectStorm likes this. -
I'd get the 6700K and just underclock it via Throttlestop if that was the case. 6700 turbos to 3.7GHz on 4 cores; still requires 500MHz OCing on a 6820HK to achieve that.
No lol. Maxwell and Pascal have a voltage variance in their BIOS to keep their "power savings" deal up. You can't undervolt them because their lowest voltage set is generally extremely low. Pascal has a 0.1v variance give or take; Maxwell has a 0.21v variance. This means if your voltage is "1.2v" you could be anywhere between 1.0v and 1.21v on a Maxwell card, at that performance level. Pascal would be more like... if your card was 1.05v, you could be anywhere between 0.98v and 1.08v. Read some more about it here.
This means an undervolt would push your minimum way way too far, and the card would be likely to crash. As for the CPU temps, that's secondary to its 1060 which I'm dead certain isn't even going to hold 970M performance. ESPECIALLY at the higher resolutions that's clearly going on that notebook.hmscott and ThePerfectStorm like this. -
Never ever!! What's up with you bro?
I have soldered chips in my phone. And that is more than enough

@SRSR333 was either resurrecting or answering a question posed a while back, why would someone want to custom set the refresh to 40hz down from 60hz?
He is correct that you would want to do that to match the avg frame rate of a game running at 40 fps to fix display issues when running at 60hz refresh
It's along the same lines as my use of the same tactic at other refresh rates to clean up the game display. Synchronize the refresh with the game FPS, set the limit at that new refresh, and I set it up as a custom setting in RTSS to automatically adjust when switching games.
It works great for stopping tearing and other display anomaly's, and stops running the GPU / CPU harder than necessary when games run faster than the fastest refresh possible on the display.
And, @SRSR333 is also correct that it's a tactic most used for lower performance GPU's, or from the time when all GPU's had trouble pushing games at 60hz, I just kept the tactic alive for higher performance and higher refresh displays.Last edited: Sep 13, 2016 -
Damn man, if I had socketed chips in everything, I'd be pull'n'em and stackin'em in neat little piles all the time.
That's why they do it ya know, so we won't futz around with our electronics, playing with the chips, stack'n'em and break'n the phones.

Yeah, It's probably best you stick with a Asus/Msi laptop and not a Clevo
JK!!

Nah, I gotta get a Clevo, I'm just waiting for the new fans, better fitting cooling, and the 120hz IPS G-sync screen, and a break in my schedule, maybe this year...or next if Volta / Series 200 chipset rumors start up in between

Oh' You think the same way as me?
Smart move
But the fans need to push enough air so I can go for 5.1-5.2 GHz
Of course on a socket chips

You hit the nail on the head bro
If people can manage 5.1-5.2 GHz in every benchmarks with Skylake..,. I would say they have won the silicon lottery

Got quoted by D2Ultima so I'll put in my input too.
All of the screens are the same. They are not binned. It's up to the OEM to implement the higher refresh rate EDID.
Metabox which are an Australian Clevo reseller does not flash the EDID with 75Hz native, however I run my screen at 100Hz (Truthfully that's the highest I've tried, it's stable and I could try until failure but I find 100Hz to be fine for me)
Not having 75Hz from the OEM does not denote the panels OCability. That's like saying just because one OEM offers 4.5Ghz OC'd 6700K's out of the box, the ones with stock wont OC as high as those. It's a stupid concept and I don't know how one would come up with it.hmscott likes this. -
Pretty sure they aren't all capable of 75Hz. So getting one already that high guarentees you'll at least get that. Because the resellers can just try again with another panel. So its totally possible to still OC just as high, but just not as likely.hmscott likes this.
-
Do you know how costly it would be to offer 75Hz with a panel that isn't guaranteed to OC to 75Hz?
If it's a hit and miss it would never be offered from a business standpoint.
Costs:
Labor - Testing panels and removing if they weren't stable at 75Hz would be costly (Not only in employee wages, but lost profit from less machines/day leaving the shop, this also irritates customers with slower build times)
Panels themselves - Covering the cost of rejected panels if all you offer is 75Hz
In this situation where the belief is not all of them OC to 75Hz it's not economical or profitable.
In the end, I have not heard of a SPD1 or SPF1 that does not OC to 75Hz and beyond. I've only heard of testimonies of 90-100Hz.
Where is your 'pretty sure they aren't all capable of 75Hz' nonsense coming from?hmscott likes this. -
What are you talking about? Why would the resellers be doing that? This is the same panel from before they offered GSync on it back when they all were 60Hz. Back then not all of them would OC well (but most would). This is the same deal.
Edit: if they are the ones flashing it up to 75Hz how would they be guaranteed that would work everytime? These monitors weren't designed with 75Hz initially in mind.Last edited: Sep 14, 2016hmscott likes this. -
How does that make sense though? Its just the same old 60Hz panel. They are all certified to be able to run at 60, they really 100% all can run at 75Hz even though its not what they were designed for?hmscott likes this.
-
Find one that can't and I'll redact all of my statements
-
I can't find it, but a P670 owner had a 60Hz screen that wasn't OCing well.
I did find meaker from Sager talking about it:hmscott likes this. -
Does the V-sync setting in NVCP actually stick in games? Regardless I've never actually been (consistently) over 165 FPS so I can't speak of my own experience. Doubt I'll notice the difference anyway

@Galm17
You're both right as it turns out.
The Clevo panels while the same, aren't being EDID update flashed for 75hz because they can't assure they will all qualify, or they just don't want to be bothered with updating
The other manufacturers must be pre-qualifying, purchasing pre-qualified panels at 75hz.
And, my angle coming in was a user report that said he could only get 63hz maximum OC, but as it turns out he was talking about the 15.6" panel, not the 17.3" panel. Apparently the 15.6" panel doesn't like to OC.
Let's let it go for now.

Did a quick test with Fallout 4 at 720p and low preset. With v-sync ON in NVCP, frame rate capped at 165. With v-sync OFF in NVCP, frame rate flutters around 240. So I actually have to enable v-sync (at least for absurd FPS scenarios).. Interesting indeed

Windowed mode is not guaranteed to have Vsync work.
In fact, assume Vsync in NCP won't work for windowed/borderless for all titles, and if it DOES work, count your lucky stars. -
Apologize if this has been covered previously, but is there any word on the 1050 mobile? I'm interested in the XPS 15 and thats the GPU it will most likely pack

I like that guy, but I'm always let down by his reviews, but I keep posting them, as there still isn't much out there.
Suzzy's review actually had gaming benchmark results
My main complaint about David Lee's reviews, no substance in the form of benchmarks or solid info. He doesn't even show FPS / CPU / GPU utilization while showing game play.Dr. AMK likes this. -

Single card? Not latest AAA.
-
What I like about Dave's reviews is how he focuses on testing the build quality. Just by watching few seconds I can tell whether a unit is solid or not. But I agree, it would have been perfect if he actually shows benchmarks and numbers.hmscott likes this.

My Google skills fail me. How do the mobile Pascal cards compare with last generation's full desktop 970 and 980?
-
The pascal mobile cards are roughly on part with their desktop counterparts it seems. So I would go out on a limb to assume that the DT differences would be close enough to compare.

Sounds good. But how do the mobile Pascal cards compare with last generations desktop cards? So mobile 1060 vs desktop 980?
My brother has a 970 desktop and we're wondering how a 1060 mobile card would compare with his setup.hmscott likes this. -
From my understanding it's as follows
1060= somewhere between 970DT/980DT
1070= 980ti~
And the 1080 is 40%+ on the titan x
Though that's with adequate cooling and power.

I'm not a shill but XoticPC does full customization even for Asus laptops: http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-gl502vs-db71.html?startcustomization=1
Edit: Taking out the M2 SSD knocks off a grand total of $20

Depends where you are to be honest. If you are in the US you more or less have your pick of the litter. I'd say ask around. (Not to be rude but up here in Canada we have almost no custom dealers)

Some of these YouTube reviewers seem like they're shilling. So bubbly and hyped up. Can the mobile 1060 actually do many AAA games on ultra around / above 60fps @ 1080p?
I'm so torn between the 1060 and the 1070 laptops.hmscott likes this. -
I'm personally not so sure. I have largely been ignorant to the bottom end of the spectrum. Though I would assume for now the 1060 is capable. Personally I would suggest the 1070 in a nice thick chassis with good cooling if it's in your price range.
Sent from my SM-G930W8 using Tapatalkhmscott likes this. -
Owning the 1060 mobile it can handle most 1080p@60 ultra with few dips here and there even 100+sustained in games like OWatch. HOWEVER if this is going to be your main gaming platform of choice go with a 1070 for sake of longevity if you dont care for the extra thickness it entails.

This should help you. The laptop cards should be within 10% of the performance of their desktop counterparts.
Edit:
Forgot this doesn't have the 1060 on it(it wasn't out yet) which should be somewhere between a 970 and a 980 like someone else said.

I was going to buy 1080 laptop around January, but 1080Ti leaks have me in doubt. Will there be a 1080Ti for laptops as well? (Probably too early to ask but maybe someone has insider news).
