haha, yeah, I just commented on that in another thread after checking it out in Newegg. This is even a better bargain than the M17/W840Di given the specs.

4GHz on air cooling? Is that even possible?
-
Just FYI, that particular model will not be breaking 20,000 in 3dmark06, probably not even 18,500, since it's got a mobile 2.8ghz C2D. The test rig has a Q9300 (how can the same notebook house a mobile OR desktop chip anyways?) oc'd to 4ghz, a speed that a T9600 has no hope of ever approaching.
-
i think it's a qx9300.

Holy Jesus :O
-
But it's worthless to shoot for 20k anyway as a rule because a T9600 is enough gaming power for anything out there. With a 4870 X2, you'll be playing at high enough settings that the CPU will not be a bottleneck.
-
That's true... I was just making the distinction since it's pretty significant. And yeah the test rig most likely had the QX9300, not the desktop Q9300.
-
I dont think its ever been about gaming. Its about bragging rights.

Note what you said the first time.
Why did I deliberately mention Apple? Because Apple markets its new products everywhere. HP and Dell are nowhere close in the type of marketing when they release new laptops. You brought up the new designs, so let's go with new designs. HP and Dell do not advertise the way Apple does. Remember the marketing campaign for the Air, or the new MB/MBPs? You saw them on the TV, on the streets, online, in printed media. In comparison, did you see any TV ads for HP's DVxT lines or Dell's Inspiron 13? I sure as hell didn't. Some printed and online ads, but nowhere close to the marketing blitz Apple went on. And to be fair, with its limited range of products, Apple can afford to pour huge amounts of money into each marketing campaign.
Among those with an interest in computers, even in North America, Asus is definitely well-known, just look at their products in the desktop market. Even with the advent of the W90P, the average consumer still doesn't know about Asus, but the average techie would already have heard of the name at least. If the new performance of the Asus laptops will make Asus well-known to the average consumer, then why hasn't Clevo become a well-known brand name yet? It has made some of the most powerful laptops in their weight/size class.
"Everyone" won't know about Asus just because it has released the most powerful (GPU wise at least) laptop out now. -
That a really good cooling system.

This is where this discussion started and what i was really trying to say, the average consumer DOESNT know Asus even makes laptops. I bet if you do a poll on this site asking people if they knew about asus LAPTOPS prior to joining this site the % would be high for people who didn't know before this.
i know this i spend all of time in what notebook should i buy, when people say what they are looking for a notebook and you say Asus they want more information about the reliability and the warranty and all that stuff. You can tell right away there was no knowledge prior. Also it seems most people who ask about Asus in there posts titles/threads, are saying they know about it because prior to joining they were reading around this site anyway.
Also what you say about there stuff in the desktop market....how many people who are buying a notebook even owned a dekstop prior? Or if they bought a computer from HP or Dell, how could they even know about the components inside there desktops? Im talking about the average consumer here, they're not even gonna know they have an asus motherboard inside.
Back on Topic
That cooling system is amazing though they really spent alot of effort on this notebook everywhere and it shows. -
Another interesting thing about the W90: I don't see any Crossfire cables...

20,000 on a laptop.
Insane.
Awesome. -

Bragging rights and your e-peen
Hehe, at least it gives us some expectation to look forward to in a couple years when a single notebook GPU will be able to better it. -
3 seperate fans is good . this was a well designed laptop props to asus
-
QFT... 10 char

Well, it would be awesome to say that my W90 hit 20k, but seriously, imagine the gaming posibilities. I am so psyched to play any game at max.
It won't last, but it will be amazing while it lasts! -
I can see 3 memory slots. is it tri-channel?
-
Woah thats pretty darn impressive!
-
it is
it's says in the spec sheet i think.
-
The only problem I see with these notebooks is that you can buy a desktop with two HD4870x2's for quad crossfire, an i7 CPU, 8GB of ram, 4TB of HDD space, X58 mobo, and two 47-52" 1080P monitors including wall mounts, and a 7.1 audio system for the price of this machine. Considering all of that can be had for under $4k USD. And I'm guessing this will be around that.
Some people either just have too much money, or don't know how to spend it very well. Either that or you live in a closet and have absolutely no space at all. I just don't get it. -

It's also a proof of concept for a high level mobile workstation, something that developers would be interested in. -
I hope Lenovo gets some new ATI gpu power for their notebooks.

You need to realize that not everyone lives the concrete life you do. These are a god-send for those of us who do not live in the same place every year, and/or do a lot of traveling. I, for example, am working in Korea this year, but in Thailand for a month vacation as I write this, and probably working in France next year. It makes no sense for me to build a giant desktop (one of which I do have sitting back in Canada), when it's not mobile at all.
It is a niche market, but combine that with rich people who, like you said, just buy them on a whim, and sales should be ok. -
More importantly, it's currently available at newegg for 2.2K.
-
lol, try half that (I know, I was amazed when I saw this too).
-
Can you pack all that stuff away and put it in a backpack?
No. So I think you've missed the point. -

i agree however, i still think extreme gaming laptops
are only for people with money to waste.
others should stick to desktop gaming. -
Ultra-extreme, yes (unless you're a pro-gamer), but for people like me, a good gaming laptop (like the MSI GT725/NP8660/<insert other awesome laptop here>) is perfect since I don't have any room for a desktop (even though I'd prefer one).
-
I love playing 3dmark06. It's such a good game!
-
i think i got bored when i couldnt fly the plane
-
hehe you beat me to it. It's funny how ppl see a laptop like this and automatically assume it will be $4K. And the 2.2K doesn't come with a stripped down machine - it's still dual 4870 + T9600 not like past <$2K Gateway gaming machines that comes with a subpar cpu.
I was about to spend $2K on a complete Core i7 desktop system but now I'm not so sure anymore. 18.4" is big but as a DTR where I'll only be moving it around the house, size and weight will not be an issue. I have my 15.4" and netbook for that.
The only consideration with these machines is l may need to upgrade to a new machine every 2 years or so. -
Its DDR2 800, not 667
-
yeah I know the specs say 800 but in the review :
where it was tested the ram there was 667..then again that was a sample unit so things may be diff with the retail versions.
edit 2: I looked at the pics on the review again PC2-6400 666. And the cpu-z screenshot (with turbo on) seems to favor the claim that it is 667 not 800. Hopefully that's because it's a sample unit -
The days of NVidia controlling the cost of high end notebooks is over.
Like others have said, this system with T9600 and 4870 X2 can be bought on Newegg for $2,199. -
Wow, finally get to see more pictures of it and I can say....its a beautiful laptop. Its the best bang for your bucks ever on a laptop!
-
Indeed, I'm surprised by just how cheap the video card appears to be. Intel's price for the T9600 is $530 (as of the January 18th price list). Then of course you have the WUXGA display, chassis and motherboard, the hard drive, the 12 cell battery, the OS, the 2 year parts & labor + 1 year accident warranty... it seems to me that the price of the mobile 4870x2 is in fact not that far from the desktop one. Let's see how Nvidia answers this.
-
Hmm. Read about this coming model about a couple weeks ago. Now it retails here in Finland for 2799 euros.. I'm not even shure it had the two 4870's, but only one.
-
i'd nearly sell my M1730 for this....man it looks good
4870x2 to match my desktop -
Amazing. Gonna try to get one this summer. Wow only 2Gs for this laptop. I will OC the crap out of it though.
