Whats wrong with guy from geek squad owning a FX? I think it comes down to he knows thing or two about this laptop. That it has best price, performance bang for your buck compared other 8600mGT and 8800mGTX series.

Didn't say there was anything wrong with it.. said it amused me.
The GS guys in the local store were complaining that they weren't able to get them. -
I just ordered mine last night and BB says it is backordered. Is this an error? I'm in Canada.
-
probably not, very popular laptop, although my bestbuy has like 6 right now aha....plus our price is still at 1400 while the US is apparently at like 1600 now
haaha

Where in Ontario are you? I could drive there and pick it up...do you have sales tax there? Ordered online and total including tax and shipping is 1500$

Where can I buy T9300?

Would it be better(faster) to use a raid 0 mode with 2 5400RPM HD or 1 7200 RPM HD ? (mostly for game) .
Thanks. -
Its faster to run RAID0 with 2x5400 HD then 1x7200 HD. But its better to run non-raid or raid with mirror/parity then RAID0 because if there is HD failure, all the data if both HD is gone in RAID0.

i am in london, its about two hours from the border, im sure you know where it is

I am running a laptop with a Nvidia GEeForce 8800M GTS with the 67.46 drivers. WIndows Vista OS. I can not seem to enable direct3d 10 (direct x 10) under the the shader quality under options within the game Company of Heroes Also terrain detail will not utilize Ultra setting. The settings are greyed out.
I was wondering if there is a trick to get this stuff to work? Perhaps the video card is too new or I need a newer driver? (ALthough I dont see any available from my lap top manuafacturer (where Nvidia sends me). Id like to stay with official driver releases if at all possible.
Thanks in advance
It looks like alot of folks have a good amount of experience with this laptop . Sincerely hope I am posting in the correct location.
Thanks in advance and I look foreward to reading any replies.

Stock Gateway 167.46 is missing a DX10 driver. Use Windows Update to get a working version or laptopvideo2go.com.

Thank you Sero.

bwhxeon, could you take a load temp reading of the current CPU and compare it to the load temp of your new CPU when you get it installed?
-
All the information here was very helpful and at the weekend I ordered one at the Canadian webpage. However, I hope the "out of stock" won't be there too long.
Concering the price guarantee: Is the 14 day price-match valid from the day I ordered it or from the day they shipped it? (which is hopefully not too far away)
Another thing: I am from Germany and because of that, a German OS would be quite nice. When you choose the clean re-install without the bloatware (oh, how I hate that stuff) by using the Vista-Premium CD that came with the PC, was it possible for anyone of you to choose another language than English. In other forums I read that from time to time, several languages are delivered on CD. Otherwise I will have to improve my English with Vista. Quite nice! -
So its a T9300?
Man... I wish I would of bought that 16831fx when I saw it at BB last week...
I could of easily bought a T9300 and AS5 ... and gotten a laptop comparable to m15x...
-BUT I need portability, longevity...etc...
And btw... IMO its not well built...
-the keys felt too soft/mushy IMO and when -I laid my hands on the front to type I felt it bulge in... the BB guy said there were 2 hdd's in it (total BS since I could press down up to 1 inch on the left side I think it was)
-The screen seemed weird because there was so much plastic on the borders...
-Stupid game was running on it... which was... Runescape... BB agent gone wild anyone?
-It was not too heavy though!
-Pretty colors
-Responsive touchpad
-And I also think that it was SLIGHTLY too thick... as in .3-.5 inches too thick... that would of been a good 17 IMO then...
Amd btw... whats up with the FULL 4 coll um KB you are talking about!? -
I believe is from the day it ships. I also ordered my unit online and decided to go into a local store where I had picked up the unit to do the price match instead of calling the 800 number. >.> I was even looking at the price match brochure and the guy said it was up to 30 days instead of 14. All documentation states laptops can be price matched up to 14days, but it is physically possible for them to do it up to 30 days.
but I didn't tell them that.
After seeing a few picks of the m15x, I'm kind of considering it, I might just put my P-6831fx with the t9300 up for sale for the current BB price or a little lower maybe... just need to decide what I'm going to do.
No problem, I had planned to do all my test again and update my original post as well. I'll probably throw in a overclock update as well. I also found my world in conflict cd so that will probably be the best game to show how much the t9300 will help. -

What? I thought you had a bad experience with Alienware. I just used the Antec Formula 5 silver from Bestbuy, it idles at 31c, so its working well.
-
BWHXEON ! ! !
w00t nice idea!
I mean... the main reasons I am getting m15x are
-8800m gtx
-15.4 inch
-Quality (come on... well see whos wrong)
-Smart Bay
-Features
Cons that I have found:
-Price (unless base price and working my way up)
-Skullcap design may end up thickening my lappie (idk... I hope not)
-MAYBE runs hot (Idk... people kind of convinced me... but.. hey... alien tech
)
-
cough...bad experience is a huge understatement, but it really didn't even compare to my problems with lenovo. The m15x is more office friendly and compact. I originally did start out with a 15.4 laptop. The P-6831fx is rather light for a 17 inch laptop, but I just got a new contract thats gonna require flying back and forth for a while. Spending 4-8 hours on some flights really means a longer battery would be really nice to have especially if I didn't have to keep shutting down the laptop down while in the middle of work.
-
Yep, I too get that click when the laptop is idle. It reminds me of a clicking sound some older SCSI drives used to do, it was a thermal adjustment of some sort. Though I'm not sure if this is what the P-6831FX is doing.
-
If you are using vista make sure you don't have the searching index turned on the C drive. Also the windows search service turned on. Otherwise it will always index your drive. That could/could not be the problem.
-
Gonna try and sell the laptop maybe, let me know if your interested, details in the link.

Before you go selling it off, is there any way you could report the stock and T9300 CPU temps?
-
If the laptop doesn't sell today, I'm installing the processor tomorrow night and taking the add down.
-
I installed a T9300 today, and using CoreTemp, :
Idle: Core1>30-34c / Core2>29-30c
Load: Core1>35-39 / Core2>34-37
Sorry, I don't have the stocks, as I replaced a T7700 with the T9300. There wasn't much real world difference between the T7700 & the T9300 that I could see, but I wanted to put the T7700 back into my Acer 2950G. SiSoft benches showed a huge jump in Processor arithmetic, Multimedia processing,
just a little on Mem Bandwidth, seemed a taste faster, not much.

This laptop looks really good.
One thing I want to know, is the price going down when the new fx laptops are introduced.
Also will the new laptops will be available at Best Buy?
Thanks! -
The new laptops wont be available at bestbuy, the price on the P-6831fx should be going back down to 1349$ in the next few weeks. From what I understand gateway made a big hit with this laptop and now is on backorder for the next few weeks. So the price hike was done to actually deter even more orders.
-
ok everyone, at this time I will no longer be updating this thread, I resold the laptop today so I can purchase something smaller for my upcoming business contract. ^^ thanks to all that helped and I'm sure I can still answer questions but I wont have any updated information. The unopened T9300 processor wasn't included, so I might sell that in the next day or so or keep it for my new laptop. If your interested in the processor feel free to PM me.
-
It's really sad you got that laptop and have already gotten rid of it
-
thanks alot bwhxeon!
Much appreciated
-
Heres the link for the T9300 processor if any of you guys are interested. If it doesn't sale by like next Tuesday I'm just going to keep it.

Hello, first post here and I just wanted to say thanks for all the info on this laptop. I hav ebeen following this thread since it popped up (up to page 55 or so) as I was quite interested in this laptop when it was announced at CES last month. Anyway, i finally got the $$ together to buy it on Monday and placed my order with BB Canada. It'll probably be a couple weeks before I get it, but in the mean time I had a question, if it has been asked already I appologize.
Is there a laptop cooler that someone could recomend for this? From reading through here it sounds like the airflow is different on this laptop than on most, so will the standard fanned coolers make any difference?
Also, not too important but if someone could recomend a backpack for this i'd be appreicative. My current bag won't fit a 17" laptop I'm quite sure. I saw the post about the Targus bag, but from the looks of it that's the briefcase style bag... i'd much rather the backpack since I'll be doing a fair bit of lugging it around.
Thanks a lot.

Mountain Hardware has the best backpacks I've ever seen, big selection and top quality http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Subcategory.aspx?viewAll=false&top=1246&cat=1272&viewAll=false click on view additional specs, most of them are for 17", mouse over the color blocks to change color.

I just wanted to check for any other opinions, does anyone else get the hard drive noises, that sound like its a click where its accessing data really fast, for no reason. It seems to be when doing very "low stress" tasks, like web browsing or typing in word, where the hard drive isnt doing much work. I know the guy before said it happened on his desktop with vista, I was wondering if anyone else is getting it on this particular laptop though (I was getting the same noise on the gateway, and the dell I had, both with 250gig HDDs)
-
Thanks muchly! I got nervous about voiding the warranty and then possibly needing it later (as has been my experience with ALL laptops
)so I ended up ordering the P171X-FX direct from Gateway. Larger res screen and a T8300, but a 3-yr in home service warranty for any "oops." Due 3/11.
-
Have you turned off vista's quick search and drive indexing yet?
-
I didn't do the indexing yet, I guess I SHOULD try it. Also where do you go to turn off the quick search stuff, I'm still a vista newb
I have one other question about Vista, this isnt really specific to this particular laptop, just vista in general. I was trying to defrag the other day, and it took a REAAAALLY long time, is this normal for defragging in vista? I mean Ive only had the computer for 3 weeks, and I cant understand how it would take over 5 hours to defrag. I ended up having to cancel it cause I needed to use the computer... -
got mine today
it was open box so i got it for $1199! then i got a mouse and i came to like $1400 with tax, am so pleased right now, wiping the HDD and installing XP as we speak....i hate vista lol. -
Is this laptop only available in North America, cant seem to see it on the UK site, and there's certainly no irish section
-
Does it sound like it's parking and un-parking it's head every 10-20 seconds? 'cause I had that issue, and it seems to be pretty common.
I used a proggy called Notebook Hardware Control and set the harddrive advanced power management to max performance. That seems to have fixed it. -
yeah, thats what it sounds like, I guess I'll look into that program and see if it works
-
k got some bench marks, this laptop is clearly bottlenecked by the processor.
All of the following are at native res, 1440x900 on 32 bit vista
World In Conflict, everything on high, physics on medium, DX9, 2AA
For World in Conflict it did not matter what the settings were on I got the same result, so the processor is clearly the bottleneck in this game, but it plays smoothly and only when there is 1 trillion plus explosions it gets unplayable. Not a problem though.
F.E.A.R., absolute highest settings on everything, 4AA, 16AF
Again i feel at times it is held back by the processor, but it never dropped below 30fps.
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, Highest settings possible, forced 2AA.
This game was very limited with the processor, it is not utilized for more than one core, and being an RTS it requires the processing power for all of the units on screen, etc. The lowest it dropped was to 20, which is is extremely playable on this game, even 15 is, it sat at 60 most of the time and only dropped to 20 when there were like 100 units on the screen and lots of deaths and explosions.
Company of Heroes, Highest settings possible, 2AA, model detail bar to highest
This game, AGAIN, was bottlenecked by the proccesor, to be expected though. This game never faltered or stuttered, was as smooth as butter. On my quad core desktop with an equal GPU, never dropped below 45 FPS so there is alot more to pull out of this GPU.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, allsliders to higest values, all options on high, large textures, HDR, no AA
The game was pretty smooth, but the only reason that I can think of that why the indoor FPS were lower than the outdoor FPS, was that the outdoor areas are much more GPU bound and the indoor areas are CPU bound.
I think alot of this has been done before, but I think it will help show the true potential of this laptop. Get a better processor if you can(for gaming), it is perfectly adequate for normal use but gaming its the bottleneck.
I will be adding Crysis soon, as well as HL2: Episode 2. -
Hey Narsnail are you located in Toronto?
-
nope in London, very close, about an hour and a half south west of toronto.
