Any one know how this can be bought in Europe?

Whenever I try and change the brightness, contrast and other settings in the nvidia control panel, it doesn't seem to change anything at all. Is anyone else having this problem.
-
yeah i do, think it depends what power setting your on.
go to the windows mobility center and you can the brightness. just right click on the battery symbol on the bottom right and click windows mobility center -
Yeah I found that, but I also want to change contrast, which I cannot do there.
-
yeah sorry man, ill let ya know if i find out, i just know the brightness
-
check in the control panel for something you have to agree to...
-
Thanks, I'll check those out. Right now I have an Option snowboarding pack that I use as a laptop bag, it's got that divided padded section in the main compartment for the computer, but it *barely* fits my current IBM 15.4.
-
I'm getting the Slappa Velocity Spyder, you might want to check that out. I just ordered it, but once I get it I'll let you know if it's good or not you can also do a google search there are a couple of reviews out there for it. The Velocity Spyder + Matrix are basically the same bag with a different design on the back. If you do decide to order make sure you get version B or it states Version B something like SL-LP-19B.

This sunday its now on sale for 1199! -
Did you have to update your BIOS for this?
-
No but Vista will ask you to restart after detecting and adding drivers for new CPU.
-
In response to exchanging the processor.

Those 5 screws you are unscrewing to remove the heat sink, if they are numbered you need to unscrew them in that order 1-5. Think of it as if you were changing a tire on a car, theres a reason they are numbered. This secures the position of the heat sink so it doesnt destroy your processor and/or mount the heat sink incorrectly. -
Very tiny metric screws. All lengths appear the same, except silver one. Numbered as in stamped? These hold down spring bands, not like a water block. Never mind, your correct, you want to alternate the sequence stamped on the heat sink.
I agree with others, just leave the 5 screws hanging in the heat sink when removed.
Care to write up a procedure? -
It's not to complicated, and given I've worked on probably 300 different Laptop models I couldn't point you in the exact direction just yet given I don't own all 300 models =(, but I'll be glad to write up something short and sweet. Laptops are much more stable and hardy than most believe. Maybe tomorrow I'll write up something while at work for those wanting to learn for themselves. Biggest thing about CPU installation is you want the best thermal compound you can find.
-
Does anybody know if this laptop will be still available on summmer?
Im a student and I don't have enough money right now. I will get a summer job to afford it. -
Just checked and they are numbered. Now if you unscrew them 1-5, do you reinstall 5-1 (reverse order). It would seem odd tightening #5 first. I undated the guide reflecting the numbered screws.
-
In summer, something better will be out... I am sure. 9500/9600m to replace 8600/8700m. Perhaps those will be fast as 8800m. Maybe the infamous 9800m will be out with even cheaper price tag.
-
What I always did in the field was loosen 1-5 and tighten 1-5. Also, about the screws, they are built so you don't remove them, as I'm sure your already aware.
Laptops aren't to much different than PC's, you've just gotta pay attention to screws. -
Well crap ! I'm an idiot ! When I changed my CPU I laid the four screws off to the side then put them back in wherever .... When I tightened them down I went to each screw and give it a small turn till they all where tight .. So it's hard telling what order my screws are in ..
If someone could post where the screws are originally located at I would be much appreciated .. Thanks ... -
The numbers are on your heatsink.
-
Ahhh .. Thanks Snowsurfer ,, That makes me feel better .. I think I will take the heatsink off ,, clean off the old thermal compound ,,,then apply new thermal compound and put the heatsink back on the right way ..

After extensively talking to a Gateway sales represenative I was able to get a huge deal. After sales tax, a 3 year premium warranty (which includes @ home service), and shipping - The notebook only came to $2600. Now - I am just wondering... but for $2600 is that the best way to go? Or should I be looking at a Dell XPS / Alienware / HP. The gateway has a hdmi output, 1080p screen, the duo core x7900's, and the nvidia geforce 8800GTS. Should I stick with my purchase? I would really like to know Snowsurfers opinion. Thanks.
Also - I have been reading the forum posts in this thread for about an hour now.... But i do not think anyone answered this question... How does the 8800GTS Compare to a 8800 GTX. - Thanks for the help -
If you are planning to spend that much, I would seriously consider looking into 8800m GTX. Dell, Alienware and Sager is a good choice. Newer CPU is also good thing to have but X7900 is a rocket but expensive.
Shop around and then post here with your other options. -
stick with that, thats a phenomenal deal...wow......that CPU is $800 alone, the HD DVD drive is $500, and the GTX is not worth the extra cash IMO, its not much better.
-
Well - getting laid is free for us college boys over at UCF. HeHe. Yea - I priced out a Sager and a Dell and a Alienware. Dell is not offering the XPS with an 8800 GTX unless you get the 8800 GTX SLI, which is Expensive as FU**. Also, Alienware offers it... but if I was to get it I wouldn't be able to afford anything else - Such as upgraded ram, upgraded screen, etc. The alienware with a 1 year warranty (the m15x) with an 8800gtx would cost me close to $4000. The sager wasn't too bad - It was around $3000. - The only dell laptop i could get for around the price of this gateway is a Dell xps m1730 with 120gb hd 7200 rpm, a geforce 8700 GT, dvd+rw drive, 17 inch screen (max resolution), and 2.2 ghz core 2 duo processor.
Right now I am sticking with my purchase of the Gateway for the $2635.
Although I have a new question: Should I stick with the gateway for the $2635, or should i downgrade save $635 and get gateways lower model - which offers a 2.4ghz duo core processor, no hd-dvd drive, and 250gb(5400 rpm) instead of the 400gb 7200 rpm.
So - should I try to save the $625 or is the faster version to good of a deal to pass up? I'm not sure how much of a difference exists between the two.
Here is a link to the lower version: http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529667906.php
Here is a link to the one i purchased:
http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529667907.php
Go for the lower version and save $625? Or stay where I'm At. - Thanks for the help -
Thats a killer deal $2600 total with that warranty! The cheapest Dell M1730 I could price was$4700 without all the extras (warranty etc.), and $500 instant savings, but with x7900, blu-ray, 8800gtx Sli (xps doesn't seem to have a single 8800gtx option), great machine for sure but thats a hard price to justify. Alienware lots of problems, the guy that started this post had one with nothing but problems, he ended up returning it, also hear customer service is poor. The p-171XL has all the top specs and in my opinion excellent build quality, a true HD capable screen, Raid 0 7200rpm, X7900 which can be tweaked easily (Something I really wish I could do), it is extremely easy to work on (CPU etc.) and has an excellent cooling system thats hard to beat. If your like me and like to tweak your machine to see its potential, this XL is the way to go (kind of like a muscle car type hobby thing). I got mine to post 9810 3DMark06 and thats the limit right now, but with the RAID 0 and tweaked X7900, and OC'ed GPU, you should be able to break the 10000 barrier. The only negatives is the HD-DVD (It would have been a great + if the format wasn't about to make an exit), but still very nice to have, you might be able to buy heavily discounted HD movies very soon, and they sure look great, 2nd why didn't they just pop in an GTX?, I mean come on the cost difference could'nt have been very much, that would have made the XL truly unbeatable! The GTS is a very good card though, I'am very satisfied, it does everything I need it to do. GTX vs GTS from what I see the GTS OC'ed is about equal to a GTX, a OC'ed GTX is another story. Another option the P-171X, same screen, GPU but with a T8300 2.4ghz, 250gb HD but easily RAID 0 with another matching HD, no HD-DVD, should be able to get a great deal on this one also, but if you want the Big Dog top spec XL $2600 is a bargain (I would call back one more time and voice your concern about HD-DVD leaving the ballfield and hit em for one more discount (could work)! Anyway I think you would be very happy with a Gateway FX, I know I'am (special thanks to bwhxeon), I hope I helped you make your decision.

What 'up dog, I see you did another post before I could type this long winded one, going snowboarding now killer day!
-
just ran into a new problem, i have only recently opened my hdd slot to double check before I get another HDD, to my surprise there is some sort of adhesive foil that is stuck to the second slot, like some cheap way to prevent you from using the 2nd sata slot, is this what others have???
if not then this is just plain weird. -
FOUND THESE COOL UPGRADE GUIDES WITH PICTURES FOR THE FX'S, JUST SHOWS HOW EASY THIS LAPTOP IS TO UPGRADE. http://www.notebookforums.com/thread212385.html

Dude that holds in your harddrive fluid. Thats just a protective cover for the connector just remove it nothing to worry about.

That was definitely good for a laugh this morning =) Ya...protective cover...you are safe to remove it. -

hey I just got this baby from the store and I was wondering if there is a guide somewhere I can follow to make this preform its best for games.
thanks in advanced -
Make a drivers disc and reinstall the OS to get rid of all the junk
-
While i was installing vista on my p6381fx it switched to safe mode or something after restarting and it won't even recognize my 8800GTS now. can someone PLEASE help!?
-
Did you install the proper video drivers? Vista doesn't recognize the graphics card right after you do a reinstall.
-
I'm new to this stuff...How do i install the drivers :S
Oh and this is my mom's laptop but the p6831fx won't let me connect to my own freakin internet. It doesnt recognize that either. -
No need to reinstall the OS to take all the bloatware, use this free program called decrapifier, here is the link. I found out about this program from Leo Leport "The Tech Guy" here is thew link http://www.yorkspace.com/pc-de-crapifier/ I hope this helps. I ordered my P-171x fx though a gateway rep "Rico", I paid $1,909.00 total, I saved $585.00. that includes taxs, shipping and a 3 year warrenty, and 3 year accidental damage. Has anyone tried running Everquest 2 in this notebook? If it can handle EQ2 it can handle anything, its a very cpu intense game.
-
Did you save the file called windows.old, if so click start, "search everywhere" for windows.old, if you have this file then you still have Gateway Recovery center find it and you can still burn your drivers to disk, or you can manually install the drivers through device manager, using windows.old as the browse option.
-
wtfi don't have windows old or ANYTHING. i have no idea what's going on. I also tried to connect or make a connection to the internet with my wireless but it won't recognize it. I reinstalled the OS about 4 times and it won't do anything. It just keeps doing the same thing over and over. It's not switching to regular vista mode
-
Have you tried gateways support web site for the drivers you need?
-
No thinkin of doin that right now
-
All your problems would been solved if you created DRIVER DVD.
What you are looking at is REGULAR VISTA. You now need to find and install all the drivers. Open up device manager and start with the yellow and question marked ones then end with unkown drivers.
You can find most of the drivers at GATEWAY.com -
Pm me your E-mail and I can send you the drivers
-
how am i supposed to get the drivers on the lappy when i can't get on the internet!? i'm so confused...I mean, i know which ones i gotta download, but this is my macbook. Not the p6831fx. Wtf :/
Oh in my device manager thing it says i have a USB Mass Storage Device but i didn't plug ANYTHING into the port. Is there something wrong? -
Download to your Macbook then use USB flashcard or SD Card to transfer data. If you don't have one, use the CDWriter in your macbook to burn a CD/DVD and use that to copy the drivers into your FX using the internal DVD drive.
-
????
..........can't you use the internet connection your using now? Maybe you should let the Bestbuy geeks do it for you.
-
Are the question marks directed to the USB mass storage drive or the macbook? :S
-
TwistedSociety, why don't you try obtaining the drivers first? Snowsurfer was kind enough to offer to email you. Why don't you accept his offer than keep on complainting about useless stuff you seems not understanding?
I have also given you instructions on how to transfer those 'fx drivers' you will obtain from your MACBOOK to your FX using USB or CD/DVD. If you need more detailed instructions, I will be happy to write more to you.
But you need those drivers. Please do your best to get them, even to your MACBOOK.
