I would think you would be able to, other posts on this forum say that they have the same model with 4 gig installed and it shows in the bios so yes it would

I'm still asking myself why Gateway has a model at $2000 if the only change is the processor, which costs less than the one included in the $1600 model.

    Something is missing...

I saw something that said the $2000 model has a 200gb 7200rpm hard drive too. I just got back from BB with my new FX, just setting it up, I'll tell you the looks and build quality are impressive on par or better than HP's flashyest, very solid all around, love the keyboard. The truck was just unloading at BB and they were nice enough to dig it out first for me! This is a top quality notebook do not hesitate. It is very thin and sleek and the cooling vents come out the side not the bottom.

Guys I had noticed something on the bestbuy site, now I don't take their word for everything and I haven't been able to test with a 64 bit operating system, but the bestbuy site says the memory is not expandable. It does show In the bios so not 100% sure what to think.

Also some additional info on the cooling fans. Some reason when I had it turned over earlier with the laptop on the vents where blowing air out from underneath the laptop. I tested this by proping it up a little bit by setting the laptop battery on the power cord and now the fans barely even come on while surfing.

I'd rather get the 1440X900 screen, in a year or 2 when u need to drop the rez your game will still look at native rez ;) and play better then the screen with the higher rez dropped

bwhxeon - if the bios shows 4 gig of ram then you should have 4 gig in windows vista 64 bit, it goes by what is related by the bios. I think the 3 gig limitation is just something that was posted because it comes with vista 32 bit. I would like to know what drive you are using too, i am still trying to finish installing everything.

something I left out from when I first booted the computer was that it was calling the gts just a 8800m gt. Did you by chance see that when you booted up the laptop snowsurfer?

I have a WD 250gb HD lying around, how should I install that? I never had an empty drive D before. 500 gb nice. Which game should I install first guys, Gears of war, World in conflict, Cod4, Hellgate, UT3, The Witcher or Company of heroes Op Frts? You guys decide for me.

    that's a pretty great find.

I've been in the market for a portable gaming machine, and while I was thinking about going big and buying a +3K machine, getting a decent box for half the price that'll at least last half as long (if not longer) seems like a pretty decent idea... I might drop by BestBuy tomorrow to check them out.

did you ever confirm whether or not it was 2 HD's or 1? and is there a raid controller in the bios? raid0 on anything makes me cringe. lol. I'd be a lot more inclined to stick a small 7200 rpm drive in there for os/apps and the largest 5400 I can find for more long-term storage needs.

I couldn't tell from the pics on BB, but is that just your normal, swappable dvd drive? I've been jonesing for a blueray drive ever since the format war seems to have been won, and is probably one of the first thing I'd replace, especially with the hdmi out on the laptop.

    Another question:
If I buy another processor off new egg thats penryn based, I can use the same heatsink and fan right?

I never put in a processor on a laptop before.

i assume theres absolutely nothing at all anywhere approaching that spec and price in the uk? i hate living in this country, it would be cheaper for me to fly to the us and buy a laptop there then come back than it would for me to buy a similarly specced machine in the uk.

I"Am retarded when it comes to this, but will BestBuy's online site ship to the U.K? Do you have any friends in the U.S. that can ship one to you? The U.K.'s not so bad you have excellent music bands and Elizabeth Hurley!

went to my local bestbuy today to ask about this and see it in-person, and they looked at me like I had two heads. haha.

think I'm definitely going to buy it over the net this week, though.

hey bwhxeon, ever notice if there's a raid controller in the bios to break the raid with?

lol i went to best buy and picked one up. The thing is nice so far. But I'm not used to its ...... its MONSTOSITY!!!, I think I'm overwhelmed lol.

Takes some getting used to after my pretty sleek 15.4 inch msi1029.

The guys at best buy were like OOOHHHH YYYAAAAA this is for gaming!!! this just screams games lol.

    Installing NWN2. :)

The screen is nicer too! :) viewing angles are much better then my old laptop

I cant rate the performance in windows vista because I never used Vista before.
    But we'll see in games.

Super PI Scored I think 32 at 1m.

I got to see what my old turion 64 did at 2ghz I think its was like 34 or 36.
Not much of an improvement in single core mode as expected.

But probably within the year will put in a t9300 which will add a whole nother 1ghz extra cache mem etc, that will blow the old laptops processor out of the water.

Either way its on par or improved in single core mode :)

EDIT: Just retested super pi on turion 64@2ghz did 1m in 47seconds lol
this one does it in 33 seconds

The cpu is one of the oldest processors with socket P, thats why probably you couldn't notice any change. Also as you mentioned, super pi only uses one core, though there are tests that loads both processors.

NWN2 in 1440X900 with everything on including full shadows runs at no less then 30 frames... SMOOTH SMOOTH SMOOTH.

Looks way better then msi1029 im happy with my purchase so far.
This machine runs better then my desktop with an x1950pro in it.

    Couldnt ask for more.... lol.

Even in lower resolutions NWN2 still looks good on this machine. I mention that because of games down the road if i have to drop the screen resolution.
    Runs like a dream :)

To be honest I dont play games that often anymore, its just this was a steal for the price.... I most certainly will be playing though lol.

Played the Crysis demo at BB today on 1440x900 on all high settings and the thing seemed smoother than my desktop (x2 4400, 8800gt, 2 gig). I find it hard to believe that the 3gig really make that much of a difference. Thoughts?

They have demo units out at BB? I've got to check this notebook out next time I'm there. BTW, the 8800M GTX is 15-20% faster than the 8800M GTS.

Been saying it for a while now :D crysis is a ram hog. My alienware m9750 constantly stuttered with only 2gb of ram. Speaking of my alienware, it should be arriving from the repair facility tomorrow, gonna do some comparisons.

:update: 169.28 drivers seem to be working properly now, so you can update from stock drivers. Haven't noticed any real gains so far, lost planet seemed to run a little smoother though.

they didn't have any at my local bestbuy... YMMV, though.

my local best buy is also the one that just recently busted a bunch of employees taking the items out of the boxes and replacing them with bricks/phone books/etc. lol.

The SLI 7950M GTX are actually supposed to be faster than the 8800M GTS, SLI mode just isn't optimised very well in Crysis yet.

I just picked one up today at my local BB. They only had one left, not sure how many they had in stock to begin with. Questions about future CPU upgrades. When I upgrade to a 45nm CPU will the chipset support a bump in FSB from 667 to 800, if it bumps at all and will it support the extra CPU cache. If the CPU supports 800Mhz but your board doesn't whats the point in the upgrade, thermal and power. I'm not the most tech savvy person out there, sorry if it's a dumb question.

they did have it in stock, though not on display.

I didn't want to bother them too much, since I really only wanted to see what it looked like first-hand and wasn't planning on buying anything today.

I'm driving out to my parents house next weekend to dogsit for them, and I'm probably going to pick it up at the BB out there since their sales tax is 6% cheaper than mine.

OMGFG well, which frame does it built on(sager clevo)? or gateway made it themselves? great machine for the 8800gts . If u upgrade CPU it's 200$ more so it's not that bad at all I'll go for it.

They should be available in the next day or two

Its not a sager/clevo design that much I know. It looks more like a asus design, main reason I think that is because of the latch design for the screen.

I bought a 2gb ram stick almost 3 months ago when I bought my first laptop from dell. It died so every laptop I've bought since then I have a extra 2 gb stick to use. The P-16831fx comes with a 2gb stick and a 1gb stick, so I just pulled out the 1gb stick and put my 2gb stick in. I don't have a 64 bit operating systems, might get it for work though, but the bios does detect all 4gb.

It says that on the bestbuy website, but if that was true the bios wouldn't detect the other stick. :p kind of like the website says the resolution is WXGA+1280x800 but theres no such thing.
