I had talked to gateway about the other FX series and availability, one rep told me that the high end model came with a GTX and another told me they all come with the GTS and then yet one other told me that there was only the 8800m and no difference. but none could give me a time frame of when they were going to start selling them.

Just ran 3DMark06 bone stock for a score of 7007. Had a problem my Deathadder and N52 speedpad drivers would not install. The USB receiver driver was missing, how that happened, no idea, fixed it and it's working great now. Installed UT3 and it's running 55-60 FPS 1440 x 900 top settings physics enabled. Read the penryn FX is due out the 31st and will be the last model released.

I talked to a rep at Gateway last night and he said expect to see them available online on the 17th. Should be fairly customizable too for people who want to pick and choose. Maybe a GTX will be available in the options but wouldn't that null the point of having a budget gaming laptop?

thats totally not worth it though, you'd be paying $500-600 for a card that will only get you ~20-30% better performance.

Let me ask this since the only thing holding me back from buying the best buy model is the screen resolution. Would it be better to get the resolution at WUSGA instead of WSGA? Is there really a difference or more of a preference?

WUXGA is a resolution that might give this laptop a hard time for gaming, but for watching movies it would be great. So think about it this way higher resolutions are make things better, but for gaming your system needs to have enough power to handle it, or gaming FPS wont be the best.

UT3 isn't optimized for sli, improvements have only been seen with extreme resolutions.

I don't think they will be offering the gtx, endgadget got their hands on the higher end models and they all scored in the gts 3dmark range.

It wont look as good as if it was the screens native res, but yest you could lower the resolution.

    Or Vista 32bit? lol

Vista seems nice and works fine so far, so I'm thinking I'll leave it.

XP has some issues running, I'm gonna give it another try in the next day or two, last time it ran even slower because the chipset drivers weren't working also it had no sound. So for now I would recommend staying with vista at least till gateway gets the drivers up on their site.

It runs just fine. For a laptop with a weak cpu and a above average gpu, the laptop performs extremely well in crysis. I just finished the game and thats something that my m9750 struggled to do. You can tell in parts of the game where a better cpu is needed, but all medium settings in the alien ship got me 60+ frames sometimes.

Wow, was checking out the disk provided and it has a Vista clean install option, just did a clean install very easy all the junk is gone! Gateway sure has their act together! You load disk, pick clean install, it creates a file called windows.old, does a clean install of Vista, go to device manager load any needed drivers using driver update, and windows.old file through browse feature! Incredibly easy Gateways "THE BOMB"!!!!!! :) :) :notworthy:

if there ends up being a difference in the upgraded driver please let me know, as its really not worth updating if performance isn't improved. I had a prob with my truck so i haven't had time to bench and test thouroughly, hope to get to it tonight. Let me know, thanks in advance.

There is no 3dmark performance increase, but crysis and lost planet did run a little smoother with the 169.28 driver.

From what I've seen mmorpg's do rely on a solid cpu to assist with all the action that goes on. So I think its safe to assume fps would see a good increase from a better processor, but I think the games you listed should run just fine.

Does your M9750 outperform the Gateway in any games? Dual 7950M GTXs in SLI are supposed to be a bit faster than the 8800M GTS, except in games that don't support SLI well (Crysis for example). Why'd you pick up the Gateway if you already have the M9750, which should be able to upgrade to a 8800M GTX for around $500-$600?

Fedex arrived early this morning....figures since they usually deliver around 6pm so I didn't receive it today. I got tired of waiting almost a month for repairs on my m9750 so I bought the gateway model. Haven't decided if I'm keeping both yet, the gateway was going to be for work, but now it might just be for gaming and work. Also there is still no updates on weather the m9750 will even have the option of 8800m gtx and I don't consider a site in Spanish and no one else can get alienware to say it will support 8800m gtx a fact. So as of right now, I have every intention of returning the alienware and NO I will never recommend alienware to anyone every again. I'm still very skeptical of the m15x because I think its gonna be very prone to overheating.

The 169.09 is a desktop driver, Laptopvideo2go modifies the Inf. file which you insert into the 169.09 so it works in your notebook. Nvidia has very poor support for mobile drivers. Big thanks to Laptopvideo2go! So the other guy is correct. :)

169.09 is the newest nvidia unified driver.
****EDIT CORRECTION**** 169.25 is the most current official desktop driver
If you u have nvidia search your machine for your mobile card it will get you the mobile driver 167.46.

    Slight discrepency.

I did not update to the regular 169.09 because I have a mobile graphics card.
I guess you can but I did not, laptopvideo2go drivers probably work just fine but I have a new machine and didnt want to risk screwing so I just went when official nvidia drivers.

at the moment everything works fine so I'll stick with these.

Video card "MAY" not be upgradeable because it "MAY" be soldered to the board.
If its not then you can probably put other MXM3(i believe its MXM3) cards in as long as the laptop can supply it enough power and cooling.

****EDIT***** But just as the "MAY"'s indicate I dont know for sure.

Please stop posting misinformation.....169.09 is a older driver and laptopvideo2go is well credited with their drivers. Second please do not even talk about this laptop having a upgradeable graphics card, because one MXM is a pipe dream and two gateway won't support it. So again I ask you to please not post nothing but suspicions.

:Update: XP is coming along decently, heres what I have left to find drivers for. Still can't get sound working.

    Sorry for posting that.

But I didn't actually post misinformation because I did not specificly say that it was one or another. Sorry for posting anything I did not know by fact but I was just trying to answer his question based on things I've heard/know.

and about the drivers I accidently typed the wrong desktop version sorry I just checked.

    I'll correct it

    Latest Desktop Driver:
    ForceWare Release 169 WHQL
    Version: 169.25
    Release Date: December 20, 2007
    Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit
    Language: U.S. English
    File Size: 31.8 MB

    Mobile:

    Product Current
    Installed Driver Recommended
    Driver
NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GT 167.46 Gateway Computers requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site.

You can find more information at: http://www.gateway.com.

    From NV site.

Finally, any driver thats not officially released from Nvidia, whether its beta(from nvidia) or modified is use at your own risk no matter who its from. Even if only the .inf file is modified.

    sorry again.

For the people who bought it, do you wish the screen resolution was higher or are you happy with the resolution?
I'm so impatient I spoke with the gateway rep and the other models are coming out on the 17th so just twiddling my thumbs until then trying to figure out what to do.

Installed a T7700 in my 16831, runs like a dream, can't wait for someone to come up with the XP drivers so this thing can stretch out. I can't stand Vista. I bought a Acer 5920 last August, it was a dog with Vista, replaced with XP and it flew!
This laptop with XP would be so much better. We need that sound driver!!!!!!!!!!

bwhxeon: What progs should I bench with? happy to do it. I'm watching you very carefully to see when you achieve XP goodness! I've been trying for 5 days now to come up with the drivers, the sound seems to be the kicker, no doubt. I have a 80 gig HD that I slap in when I find something I think might work, I've installed many drivers but no success. when I'm sucessfull on that HD, I'll install XP on a 7200rpm Hitachi that I have waiting for this laptop, and that will complete this lappy. search on dude!

3dmark06 should be good enough or any game benches you can do. I've tried drivers from just about everywhere to try and get the sound working =/, Since I think the laptop seems a lot like a asus design, I'll try their drivers next.

If you have Crysis, just run the bench file that should show a difference, or install FRAPS and see what you get. Very curious to see the difference with a higher processor.
