Cool, I'm just wondering about the different test numbers? I ran at 1440x900 full screen and got 1 number 158.5, then at 1280x800 full screen for 169.0. Beautiful graphics at 1440x900 in the test! Which test of yours represent 1440x900fs?

All 4 tests were done in 1440X900- I'll do some more in lower res. I read that you should do successive tests as they get better, my 2,3,4 support that. I think between 176.9 to 179. seems to be it. So please do 4 more in 1440X900, and we will see what's up. Thanks

If a lot of vehicles (5-6) are involved it'll dip to the 45fps range. But firefights don't seem to effect it. Maybe I"ll post a Fraps movie. I'll post more screenshots, having too much fun playing the game. :D Lightmark scores 1#161.3, 2#159.3, 3#160.3, 4# 160.0. The music during the test was unbearable!!! Sounded like Swedish guys rapping! So seeing Nofearzz scores are 10% better than mine with his T7700, I predict his 3DMark06 score will be 7700-7800 compared to my 7054.

every question you just asked has been answered already. Read the original post

Sweet thats what I was expecting nice results.

Best way to overclock this laptop right now is to download Ntune click the link and install. After you have installed there will be a tab inside the program and it will ask you to accept the user agreement. You must do that so you can overclock with Ntune. Next I would recommend you open up Launch Nvmonitor. On the lower right of the window that pops up click the arrow so you can monitor your GPU temps. Next go back to the original window that first opened and click on Adjust GPU settings. Click the tab that says Custom Clock frequencies. from this point it will have two sliders with the first being set at 500 for the core the second with be at 799 for the memory. Slowy adjust the slider by increasing them by increments of 20 or lower to be safer. With each setting click apply at the bottom and then click Perform Stability test on the left coll um. I would say running a test for a good 30-40 min if you overclock the core more than 70 points. Make sure to monitor your temps and that you don't see any strange marks in the testing video. If your temps go into the 90c range I would recomend lowering the clocks. If your see any strange black or other artifacting in the video test, back your clocks down by 10 points and test again. Continue the process till you find a safe temp range, "I think any thing over 85c is to high, but thats just my opinion." and safe setting to where gaming runs artifact free.

    Hey guys!

I have a m9750 and while it has been nothing but perfect running for me so far, I still have some buyers remorse after looking at this laptop!

BTW, if you really cant solve the sound problems in XP, maybe the only option is to buy an external sound card like the express card version of the sound blaster. Since you are saving so much money it might be an option. ;)

Otherwise if you need benches I can try to do the Crysis bench on my m9750 this weekend. I can do both Crysis and the Witcher. I'll do them both at your native resolution.

    Hi,

I went out and got this laptop the other day. I am currently running stock drivers for everything. My issue is that for what ever reason World of Warcraft seems to play horrible. I get fps as low as 10-15 fps just running around in empty areas. This doesnt make sense to me as I see you guys are able to play crysis.

Wow is currently using 1440x900 res windowed. All the settings are maxed except for the sampling rate when I left at x2. I run pretty much these settings on my desktop when only has a 6600GT in it (it does have a 2.4ghz proc though) and I get like 30-40 fps while running through crowded cities.. Do any of you play WOW on this thing and what has your experience been?

I am currently downloading the free version of 3dmark06 to see if I score really low or something.

Also I uninstalled all the bloatware that came on it and I am not running any kind of antivirus or spyware prevention tools when I am playing.

    Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Stock drivers suck. When Vista came out, on my desktop GPU (which is actually a 6600GT) I got low fps in WoW for no reason at all. Then, better drivers came out that brought my performance back to what I used to get on XP, so basically just update your drivers to the latest and you'll get amazing performance. The latest drivers will also increase performance in other games, too, especially Crysis.

Check your power settings in Vista. I was having pathetic performance until I relieved Vista's power setting was set to Power Saver. Once I moved that Max Performance, I got proper speeds.

I changed my setting from balanced to high performance. I am still scoring half as much across the board as the person from page 17 on this thread who posted his default 3dmark06 score... Could there be a hardware problem on my box? I am not getting any errors things are just not as fast as they are suppose to be even compared to other peoples default configs. Even my SM 2 and 3 scores were half what his show.

    Score was 2978... wtf?

*Update* I just installed the 167.45 drivers. I am going to reboot and run the bench again and see if that does anything for me.

I am now doing a clean reinstall. I am hoping the original installation was the problem. I dont see how the box can be working (no errors) yet EVERYTHING be slower. Even my CPU bench of 30% or more lower than what I see being posted as the default out of the box test case. Once installation completes I will put 3dmark06 on and run it before I do ANYTHING else and see how that goes. If I do not see some kind of increase I dont see any option than to return it.

Are you using the drivers originally preinstalled?

And are you using Nvidia's offical mobile drivers?
It shouldnt make a difference, but you can start there.

If u did lose the drivers and stuff I wouldnt worry so much you should be able to find em online.
Although at gateways support site I cant find the p-6831fx or p-16831fx, I'm sure it will be up soon. Supposedly today is there official release day. Atleast thats what I was told when I chatted with gateway... as well as others on here.

You may be able to click my support to get what you need, but I'm at my University without the laptop, also try the serial number.

    http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp

When I ran 3dmark 06 on mine, it was basically straight out of the box. I made no changes to anything.

Try a fresh install with no changes and see what happens. If it still does it may be best to bring back.

... I still need to format mine and make seperate drive partitions.
I make a drive for C: that has windows, and regularly used software like office.
Then a D: drive for games
Then an optional 3rd partition, for downloads backup and possibly another O.S. like Linux.

I was at Best Buy this morning and looked at this laptop. Pretty nice for the price :) The one at Best Buy had the 3dmark06 icon, so I ran it there while I was in the store. It gave a score of 6938. It also had the demo of World in Conflict and I ran the DEMO of that in the highest setting of 1440 x 900 with the highest settings for graphics and it ran very smooth. I hope this helps. God Bless :)

hmm ok but it seems kinda odd that mmcdonald would have such a high score
anyway - if after he installs all the new drivers if it doesn't show any sign of improvement he should take it back to best buy and get it replaced for another one. at least that way you can tell if there is an issue with all the laptops there or if its just that one

Yep found drivers and support docs.

    Heres the Motherboard:
    http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2008/GodzillaFX/4006258R/4006258Rsp2.shtml

this doc confirms that this model can use 4gb. No more speculating on that.
Video card appears to be soldered to the board.
They dont have a seperate doc for the video card. Theres no talk of MXM.

    # Graphics Controller: Nvidia® NB8E-GT
    # Bus: PCIe x16
    # Memory options: 512 MB
    # Display interface: 2-CH LVDS
    # TV-out: HDMI from GFX IC
    # Brightness Control: PWM, 8-Levels

It doesnt officially say it supports Penryn Processors:
    # Processor Supported: Intel® Intel Merom Core Duo and Merom-Lite CPUs, Extreme
    # Package: Socket-P, uFCPGA
    # FSB: 533/667/800 MHz
    # Thermal: Digital Thermal Sensor

    But Penryn(crestline?)
Is probably supported since one of the models on gateways site has a t8300.
So obviously it must support it.

    The doc may need updating?

Also the motherboard appears to be Intel. Which is probably overall a good thing.

Intel usually makes solid boards overall.

Well, gateway has MOST of the drivers on the website if you put your SN in. They do not how ever have the graphics driver and nvidia's website will tell you to get it from gateway... So I just went and downloaded the 167.43's which everyone seems to use on here right now. I am now downloading 3dmark06 again and I will post after I run it and find out if this has solved my issue.

What do you guys think I should say if this does not fix it though? I mean its not "broken" by most non-technical peoples standards.. Bestbuy will want to know why I am wanted it exchanged for another when I am not actually experiencing any errors. I wonder if saying I scored 2978 on 3dmark06 instead of the ~7000 I should be getting will work on them :) Any ideas?

    hy!

    i have a clevo with 8800M gtx! i installed 167.43 and got 9.7k in 3dmark06, because of crysis i installed 169.28 and ..... 3k in 3Dmark06!!!

Reinstalled 167.43 but points still stuck @ 3k.

After cleaning registry of nearly all entries related to "nvidia", and reinstalling driver, points went up to 9K again.

Hope, it will help u too.

I would tell them exactly what is wrong. Tell them this notebook is not performing adequately. You Spent money to buy a high performance gaming notebook and its not performing where it should be.

Show them what is wrong and have them compare the same notebook and when they see the score of the notebook double what your getting tell them thats why your bringing it back and exchanging for the one that scores well.

I think thats the best u can do.

Try not to use modded drivers when just checking to see if its performing up to par.

Use the modded drivers after u see if everything is working correctly if u want.

This is why when I buy a new notebook like this I dont immediately slap on modded drivers and other things.

I simply see how it performs and then I have something to gauge things like modded drivers and settings by.

I never used vista before so I'm also watching how things perform and getting used to it.

After some time with all this later if I want extra performance or a game has issues then I may look into modded drivers and other things.

I really don't know if this question was already answered, but here I go: I've been wondering if the notebook has a VGA output, in the pictures from best buy, I can barely see an output that has the shape of it, but it can also be a DVI output, if someone know, please answer...

Read my post before this one:
Also there is an intel chipset driver to be installed before any other drivers.
This could be why reformatting and installing the nvidia driver isnt getting u to far.

I've just begun reformatting and made a backup dvd of all the drivers.
Although I wish I would have just made the back up myself I dont like the way its done and the software didnt work.
So I had to click through the folders manually to install all my drivers.
The software there isnt any other then for like the camera... so I think I'm going to delete my recovery partition soon since it seems pointless.
    It cant be opened.

What does everyone think of that?

The GPU appears to be socketed. You can make it out when you look into the RAM and CPU bay. The heat venting out of the left side is from the 8800.

Crestline is the chipset replacement for Santa Rosa that should be appearing in mobo's in May. Penryn is the CPU and is socket-p. Penryns should work - as you note the high end P-series uses a T8x00 already. I'll be sad if they don't.

The real question is can we get a Quad Core to work? Doubtful that we will be so lucky but I have my fingers crossed.

The Xp sound driver package can be had off of the DVD recovery disk (if you created one) here:
    dvddrive:\I386\apps\app002022\HDAQFE\WDM\winxp

I think a lot of the vista drivers in the \apps folder will probably work in XP like the nic modem ect.
I'm going to install the sound package on my 80gig xp test drive & see what else I can install off the restore dvd

    Update:
Update: The Xp IDT sound drivers install, but won't start
If you put in recovery disk & say repair sound, it installs a different driver from Sigmatel (IDT bought them), but that does the same thing. I did get the following to install off the recovery disk:
    Agere Modem=yes
    Esata=yes
    bluetooth=no
    Intel Wlan=yes
    RealtekLan=yes
    realtek USB Card reader=yes

According to the spce sheet it uses a Intel® ICH8ME SB.

Only the 'E' version supports RAID. None of the utilities I ran on my FX indicated a ICH8ME. They all show it as an ICH8M (no RAID).

Has anyone got RAID working yet?

I actually bought this laptop after stumbling across this thread while looking for a new laptop. Decided to join these forums just so I could chime in on this thread.

Gaming wise, I'll reiterate that UT3 works like no tomorrow on this thing. Which amazed me. I just got done goofing with the demo a few minutes ago. While I didn't know how to check the framerate in the demo, I noticed no slowdown with everything on high and running in 1440x900. It is a great gaming machine. The only hook ups I did notice I believe were due to the webcam side bar. I noticed that the side bar was causing UT3 to minimize if I moved the mouse over to where it would be. I believe it was doing this on World of Warcraft as well.

Speaking of World of Warcraft, I am awe struck at how well it runs this game as well. Though the graphics on this game may not be totally amazing it is a very intensive game to run. At 1440x900 most of the larger cities run around 35 to 40 FPS(at least on the Horde side, I'm not sure if I want to see Ironforge) with ever setting on high(except draw distance, which is set to medium), and 2x multisampling. Outside of major cities I saw framerates between 55 to 60 FPS(without v-sync it would sometimes get up to 70 though only in areas where the LOS was very obscured). This was on a medium population server, I might add. Instanced material so far runs at a constant 60FPS. The online downside to MMO gaming with this laptop I would say is the stock HDD. At 5400rpms it isn't always fast enough to instantaneously load when there are a large amount of players around, but once it is loaded it runs smooth.

I'm trying to get Guild Wars on it as well, though it is taking a long time to install it. While not as graphically intensive due to its age there are quite a few spots in the game that were amazing looking on my desktop's dual 7600s. So I really want to check them out.

This is exactly what I ended up doing. After further examination I noticed that the vista experience rating (or what ever its called) was rating my gpu at 1.0. I did some checking and the problem as far as I can determine is that my GPU was simply crippled. I dont know if it was a bad yield or what but everything else was scoring correctly on most test that didnt need the gpu. I took it to BB and ran the 3dmark06 for the geeksquad kid there and pointed out how old this test was. He happened to be a gamer (didnt see that coming :p 19 yr old kid working at BB on the geeksquad plays games? heh ofcourse!) so he was familiar with the test. I got a replacement came home and crossed my fingers. I ran the bench and viola ~7k score out the gate :). So the fix in my case was exchange :)

Yep I just ran did a clean sweep and formatted everything and got 7012, went down 8 points but basically its the same score.

Glad it worked out for ya :)

Make a restore DVD as soon as possible. I made one and... the .exe file for the menu did not get copied on.

So basically I had to find the drivers folders which are not labeled in anything humanly readable and install everything.

So I'm going to make my own back up.
Gateway wants to charge me 20 bucks to send restore cd's. But I dont really need the software I have everything its only the drivers I'm particularly interested in.

So I'm gonna make my own "SANE" backup DvD so I can tell whats what.
Most of the software is free trial for 60 days so its not necessary.

anyways if anyone can upload the files on there restore factory settings DVD to download I would much appreciate it.... lol thats a longshot. :p

EDIT: actually if u made a back up DVD, thats all I should need is the grc folder on there.

the grc folder contains the grc_vista.exe this is the file I'm missing thats y i get no menu.

If someone could atleast get me that I would be happy :) :)

I was trying to figure that out too. It is a low end panel. Viewing angles are poor.

I wouldnt call it "low end". It surely isnt amazing but I would say that unless you sit pretty far from it and well... at a rather extreme angle I do not see any wierd fading or brightening of the panel. Seems pretty consistant to me and I normally sit about 2 feet from it as I plug an ergo keyboard in and put it between me and the laptop.

It is common for a maker to source 2-3 vendors for parts like panels. You might have a better one than mine.

My review should be on the site soon and you can look at the pix yourself. I agree that its a fine panel for gaming though. Sitting square to the screen it looks fine.

Sounds like you didn't install the GPU driver correctly, I did a clean install of Vista, and my Vista experience was 1.0 before I reinstalled the driver.

No, it was rated that out of the box, after I put the 167.45 on it, after I put the 167.43 on it and then.. I clean installed and did all that again.. it was always rated that way and always performed horribly. The GPU itself was the problem.
