well congrats on your score. because i don't live in america it will be practically impossible for me to simple return it because it got a low 3dmark06 score. instead i have to ask the guy who is purchasing mine to insure that it has that score before he buys it.. hopefully he isn't too lazy to do it or i may be boned

    *edit*
yep - as it turns out the guy who is purchasing it for me doesn't want to test it to see if there are any defects before he ships it.. *sigh* i just hope it isn't buggy or anything :(

Can someone please confirm for definite that this laptop supports the X7900 chip. I have read that some laptops require a special bios and better heatsink for this chip.

Cheers in advance - great forum by the way.

i believe gateway itself offers this with the x7900 option so it probably is capable.

First back up your computer by way of the Gateway recovery center in your programs list (at least backup the drivers) where you can make a recovery Disk. After you've done this install the disk that came with your computer "operating system disc" you'll see an option for clean vista install use this and check the option of saving a file called Windows.old (this is a 2nd back up of your apps and drivers, and is a copy of your factory setup, you can pick anything you want to reinstall later, and then delete windows.old if you like.) Initiate the clean install, once completed you can use the driver disc you made to reinstall drivers or just use device manager manually installing drivers (Example clicking on display adapters, and selecting update driver, select browse my computer, and typing C:\Windows.old click next and it will install the driver. No more junk!!!!

REAL FREAKIN QUICK GUIDE: How to install a second hard drive in your new FX. Remove battery, remove lower back cover, remove left hard drive cover, put new HD into HD cover , install HD onto connector by sliding it in make sure it's seated. restart your computer. Windows will auto install driver. click Start, right click computer, left click Manage, Expand Storage, left click Disk Management, locate the listing for your new drive (mine was Disk 1) right click Disk 1 box to activate the drive. right click the box next to the Disk1 box to format the drive and assign partitions (I used all disk space and letter G, it will be for general storage) The format process takes quite awhile so kick back. Later check your new drive by clicking Computer in the start menu to verify install. I now have 500Gb of hard drive storage!

Make sure you install the modded Inf. file into the new driver and read all the guides on their site on how to install the new driver. LTV2go's site has the modded Inf.

So I ended up getting a refund for my dell, and went out to get one of these. So far it well outperforms the dell.

One question though... I apologise if this has already been asked, but I've been trying to get my external USB hard drive and flash drives to work, and it keeps bringing up the "windows needs to install drivers" popup, and if I tell it to search it doesnt find anything. My dell had no problems running the USB storage devices, so I dont know if its vistas fault or not. Anyone have any ideas what might be the problem?

Sticking with the stock driver, something about the 8800 and the 169+ drivers that aren't working some people seeing big cuts in performance or no change whatsoever. It's odd but my 8600gt in my other machine received a nice increase with the 169.09.

Just bought one of these babys from best buy...Its going to replace my Sony VAIO that has a 7600gt and T7200 running 2ghz and 2 gig of memory. I've never installed any upgrades on a laptop (desktop I built many from the ground up) so the CPU will be my first ever experiment LOL...

Whats the BEST CPU that will fit? This is all I could find on newegg Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 Merom 2.4GHz Socket P 35W Dual-Core Processor for $329.

Most bios won't allow you to oc notebook cpus. Only one that might allow it is Clevo for one of their notebooks but its still in the developing stages. Point is extreme cpus on notebooks are a waste of money. You're paying a premium for an unlocked multiplier that the bios will lock anyways.

I had the same problem, go to device manager and you should see the yellow flag, reinstall the driver, usb receiver driver is missing, click on it select driver and reinstall it, it should self install. Smart move getting rid of the Dell welcome aboard!

hey bhwxeon is that lost planet benchmark with the dx10 have all the settings on high or settings on dx10? You know how they have high and then instead of highest they have "DX10", is that what you have it on or just high. And is Vsync on in those benches? cuz in Dx10 everything maxed 1440x900, all dx10 options enabled im getting about 27+ fps.

Yes the manual itself says its supports it for extreme processors. Although i dont see any such options even grayed for the regular.... so maybe by bios update?

Sorry guys, I've been pretty busy the last few days.
Naticus: I didn't use dx10 shadows nor did I use vsync.

As for everyone else please stop sending me messages, about the penryn processors, the one I'm going to be using is a testing sample.

I also have a update for overclocking, the new beta drivers 171.14 are not overclockable. Using 169.28 drivers are overclockable. The 171.14 drivers are a significant improvement in DX10 I'd say at this point its finally surpassed DX9. I also have some rather disturbing news, while overclocking today, started to hear a strange screeching sound and thought it was from the computer, what it was, is really troubling me. It was my adapter O_O' and I mean it was really screeching. I pulled out my m9750's ac adapter and started using that. Sooo this could mean a few bad things, #1 the ac adapter is defective, #2 the ac adapter is not strong enough to support any long term overclocking at all and #3 at this point in time, I'm gonna suspect if #2 is correct, that a more powerful ac adapter will be required for a extreme processor.

Yeah but this laptop officially supports the X7900 as does the Dell XPS M1730 and that supports overclocking. I don't know why Gateway would offer the processor if they don't support overclocking?

The news about your AC adapter isn't good though bwhxeon. I wonder if they supply a better adapter with the X7900 model?

Thanks for pointing out the M1730, that indeed has multiplier unlocking in the bios.

As for Gateway not supporting oc'ig, most likely the cooling system was never designed to handle oc'ed speeds which isn't surprising considering its marketed as a budget albeit still powerful gaming notebook. On desktops, one can just slap in an aftermarket HSF, not so on notebooks.

Found this article about Intel's Matrix RAID, its an old article but very good reading! http://techreport.com/articles.x/8059/1 Sorry to hear about your A/C adapter (I'am sure they will send you a new one) My SLi1 has a huge 180 watt adapter, gateways is only a 120 watt unit never thought about the power supply, but the more powerful these notebooks get, they will need more juice.

Thanks for the update bwhxeon. I've never heard an AC adapter screech, I believe i would get a hold of Gway and get them to send me a new, they might have a better psu that can handle the extreme and overclock, hopefully a BIOS update will not be needed. :)

Maybe you can try unvolting the cpu, that may give you a wider space to OC the Gpu...

I had the same problem but it escalated for me install a clean copy of Vista. Made the application and driver disk, partitioned 2nd partition into 50gig for C: and 170 gig for E: for data and left the 1st 10gig partition for recovery and swap file just incase.

I am having a problem finding what program enbles 'on-screen display' for your 'FN' keys? I liked the fact that when I press FN-whatever, it showed up for a second. Anyone?

I just bought the 16831fx the other day from bestbuy for my son and man this thing is nice.

Just straight out of the box it runs Crysis,Company of Hero's,World in Conflict and many more games just great....It runs them on med to high settings just as smooth as you could ask for,it really ran them better than we thought it would.

I will say this you can tweak and overclock the GPU just for the fun of it and better FPS or just take it straight out of the box and this thing will run the games great !!!

I would like to thank everybody for there hard work on checking on upgrades and ways to make it even better !!!!

Not really for that. It may lead to a decrease in power consumption and so a wider space to overclock without the adapter starting to do strange noices.

It's possible, I was one click away from the point of no return installing it, so everything is there that you need (except the 2nd HD). You really need to do some planning before hand, read the link I posted on page 34. Plus you will have to reinstall your OS again after it is initiated. There are some T7800s for sale around $550.

Does anyone know if this notebook has any kind of MXM? If it does, could any confirm the user-upgradability of the slot?
