quick question then. running 3dmark basic benchmark only what score should I be looking at on 880m in SLI?

    4810 i7 processor also btw

12879 sound about right or is that just a tad low?

Can`t patch bad silicon with new drivers you know. If only they stayed with 780M and guaranteed those clocks instead, everything would be peachy for Nvidia and their rep.

But no, lets add some megahertz.
Lets do like AMD, +50MHz like they did with R9 M290X.
Nah, thats for children. +100MHz. Come on guys, is that the best you can do? You can squeeze in almost 50MHz more than that.
But sir, we are getting close to silicon meltdown.
    MOAR CLOCKS I SAID.
The only possible option here, if you so boldly want to make a new rebrand Mr Huang, is to reduce voltage to keep the temperature at a semi reasonable level. But the GPU will be highly unstable because its not getting the juice it needs to keep those cores running at those clocks.
DO IT I SAID. WE NEED THE MONEY. MILK THE DAMN COW. WE ARE NOT DONE UNTIL ONLY SKIN AND BONE ARE LEFT
And just take whatever chip you need to make the 880M from the scrapyard, **coff* Bin I meant. The super awesome bin.
Sigh fine, but it wont be pretty. We are risking a lot here.
NONSENSE. We need to turn these in to money. This company doesnt run on air you know. Big corporation needs a ton of money.
    Sigh, fine....

Introducing GTX 880M, since its not part of the 700 series, but 800 series, its totally awesome. Buy it.
*Show graph and comparison with 6970M*
    Look how fast it is

my primary gpu got asic quality of 86,8% and slave one is even better at 88,3 lol and voltage looks good, max what i saw in my log was 0,968v if it only wouldnt throtle (both of em) when they are over 90% usage this would be great.

To be honest with your cards, you could probably run modded vbios and have boost clocks 24/7 with manageable temps. Your voltage amazed me. I'm thinking nVidia must have fixed the new batches of these cards. We will see what happens when mine comes back with a new card.

Am I missing the sarcasm here or did you genuinely look at the GPU1 at 954mhz and GPU2 at 875mhz and thought "Yep, that sounds about right!"?

It was obviously sarcasm. It couldn't be anything else.

And that's officially the worst core throttling I've seen, mine hit 888 at their lowest. To add insult to injury, his slave is 10C lower temp at that point than mine was so thermals are excellent...

It might be bad silicon and Nvidia offing all their rubbish before they release the next thing. I'm not convinced this is the case though. I have average ASIIC quality in my 780m's. Here's a run I did at almost identical clocks. No throttling, max temp 78 on GPU for a tiny bit... none of this dangerously high 90+ degree's nonsense with throttling clocks...

Surely an extra 4gb of VRAM doesn't add on an extra 12 degree's worth of heat..

    3DMark11Workload1_2014_08_03_13_19_35_304.jpg

    So Nvidia what gives ?

i dont really need moded bios yet i think cause with games i play my cards dont throtle at all, just when i did benchmark then i saw its problems when gpu utalization hits +90%.
anyway whats ur opinion if i get modded bios how high my temps would go?atm my temps spin around 70 but dont go above 73 ever and thats for par secs what i could see.

You're running about 10c under load less than my cards that run @ 1v did and you're boosting most of the time as well. Modded vbios wouldn't likely increase your temps much, maybe to the 80-85 range which is still well within operating spec.

This is going to end in a recall I hope. Sounds like crap quality silicon was used. I feel really bad for those guys that forked over all that cash for a 880M when the 780M is apparently beating it while remaining stable. This is like the 8000 series all over again....Maybe you nVidia folks should avoid anything 800 or 8000 haha :p

But in all seriousness, I can't believe nVidia is trying to sweep this under the carpet.

A ton more to silicon quality than just ASIC % I think.
I reckon you guys have perhaps used the same vbios on 780M and 880M and compared. If not then I guess SVL have put out one for 780M and one for 880M with very similar parameters (voltage, clocks etc).

What else than bad silicon quality would make two identical GPUs perform different?

Right. The reported ASIC quality from utilities like GPU-Z really don't mean a whole lot, I don't think it's reported properly anyhow. I've seen many same GPU's with lower ASIC clock a lot higher than those with much higher ASIC quality. You can't look too much into that number.

well from the guy a few pages ago, ASIC is just a categorized standard. the low leakage ones get higher ASIC %, but they don't OC well, whereas the lower % ones have more leakage but more OC potential

He may be checking it but I'd imagine someone at nVidia doesn't want him participating in this thread out of fear it could lead to them having to admit these cards are never going to run within their specs and have to replace them.

We already can see that considering that he posted his brand new AW17 was throttling because it was hitting 94C.

High ASIC doesn't necessarily mean it will overclock better from what I've noticed. My point was I'm not convinced 880m simply all suffer from bad silicon, although it's possible . It's pretty strange that most 780m's perform better and at far lower temps than almost all 880m's except Johnksss and SVL7's test sample. Was is because it was a QS sample? Who knows? What would be nice is Nvidia showing a little respect and getting back to those showing displeasure with their product.
It's annoying seeing people getting email responses from Nvidia where they pretend it's the first they've heard of it.

The most plausible explanation for the high heat is likely the 8GB of RAM which would explain why Johnksss said that the heat wasn't from the core in his testing.

The explanation I heard for ASIC is higher means less leakage and better OC on air/water. Lower ASIC means more leakage and better OC with extreme cooling (DICE/LN2)

    Must've been cherry picked samples.

    Right i have a email from scan.co.uk

latest bios for my clevo and also latest vbios for the 880m gfx cards. will be giving it a go tonight and then re testing the cards in heaven and valley to see what is what!

will report back later tonight (uk time that is) with any improvements if any.

also scan.co.uk have said if this dont work they will replace the 880m GPUs for me. kinda pointless if you ask me but will see if i get more stable cards,

I think he's asking about vbios version.

BTW guys I need a little help.
I ordered a Clevo P150SM-A with a 880M and yesterday Scan uk told me they cannot deliver it before 15th due to lack of Intel 4810MQ CPU. I told them to cancel the order.
Today I found they have a promotion for old Clevo P150SM. So I did a price comparison for the 150SM & 150SM-A. Seems like if I buy the old model I can save around £150. I'm planning to upgrade the VGA next year. Due to 880M's current issues and very attractive price of the P150SM, do you think buying old model is the right choice for me?

    Clevo P150SM
    Intel 4810MQ
    16GB Ram
    nVidia 780M
    500GB HDD
    Blu-Ray R/RW
    Windows 8.1
    Price £1312

    Clevo P150SM-A
    Intel 4810MQ
    16GB Ram
    nVidia 880M
    500GB HDD

    Windows 8.1

It's quite simple. The number is entirely dependent on default voltage. Low default voltage, high ASIC Quality %. High default voltage, low ASIC Quality %.

Not exactly a good example of the 880M but atleast they are not suger coating how hot they can run.
Pretty hefty throttling right there. Voltage doesnt drop though, strange.

I`m not familiar with the Clevo machines if the SM-A model offer anything better than the old SM (like cooling etc), but hardware wise you should go for the old SM with 780M imo.
This thread should be enough reason.

Awww, I was hoping for a worlwide problem with silicon with Nvidia having a massive P R problem, followed by AMD gaining ground, followed by Nvidia to be forced to pay big bucks to 880M owners, followed by AMD becoming gamers brand of choice, followed by price reduction on the Nvidia GPUs, followed by a performance race we have never seen where Nvidia retakes the crown by crushing AMD by 50% to retake market share, followed by AMD catching up and offering something better than that, followed by customer satisfaction with super awesome powerful chips the world have never seen before

But I suppose its good news if 880M problems do get fixed

Root-caused the problem?! Surely the root cause has been evident ever since the first testing was done on the 880M by NVidia (long before it hit the shelves), it must be inherent in it's design, it can't be one massive QC problem right, it's by design. (I'm referring to the 880M throttling & not holding 993Mhz max boost (even going below 954Mhz base clock) when temperatures are ok - apologies if that's not the issue we're all talking about, I should probably read the whole thread!).

This is what pidge/ManuelG posted over at the GeForce forums:

If I had to wager a guess, the stock vBIOS limits the TDP to 110W, which is why 880M (especially in SLI) throttles like mad during games. But as we've seen with the unlocked vBIOS, the throttling can be fixed at the expense of increased temps, so I'm not sure there's a root fix for this.

In any case, I'll wait for an official vBIOS update from nVidia before making any more statements.

They don't have to loosen the BIOS to run 993MHz all the time, just 954MHz.

It's obvious that these cards are going to be hot but 954MHz is about 5-6C cooler than 993MHz in my testing of the modded vbios choked to stock clocks and I'd be fine with that trade off.

I looked up the TDP just for fun on the 880M so I could better educate myself on the issue; the 880M is rated ~122W!? WAAAT? No wonder you guys are burning up. 100W should be the limit on a mobile platform.

I've even seen 125W thrown around. Yeah its pretty much impossible to cool these things.
