Iam running this in 1080p on QX9650 / 9800m GTX without AA. Almost no stutters. Somehow feels like Borderlands. I really like the game so far

BUT those low-res textures everywhere really bug me.

The way ID TEch 5 works is that the textures don't appear unless you are looking at it. On consoles this is fine since you can't turn nearly as quick as you can with a mouse.

On PC with high res textures this is very noticeable. Whether you are on Nvidia or on AMD with the OpenGL Rage optimized drivers.
    - If you are using AMD get the new drivers. If you are having issues, this is not an AMD thing! This is an ID Tech 5 issue!
AMD Catalyst? - Rage Performance Driver

Good thing about PC is that modders can mod the game. I would not be surprised if some savvy modders are able to find ways to work around this and mod the ID Tech 5 Engine. I hope ID Software provides these modders with all the support they need.

Hey, I heard the level editor and dev tools were supposed to ship with the game. Any idea where the custom content will be uploaded to? (Ex, where is the aspiring rage-mod community?).

yes it works!!!i run the game full hd with 4x AA and the latest ati drivers 11.9 rage performance without textures issues,no pop-in at 60fps.

put this config in rage\base for better performance and textures fixes!!!

    https://rapidshare.com/files/254075129/rageconfig.cfg

also put in the rage shortcut properties this commands

    +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +set g_fov 16

I installed the AMD Rage update drivers and I still get a small amount of texture popping, but it isn't terrible. The only major issue is that I have horrible screen tearing still. :/

I've already fixed up most of my issues with RAGE now, but I have terrible NPC artifacting. Supposedly the 11.10 beta 2 drivers are supposed to fix this, but I don't know if these drivers work for mobile cards.

I guess ID Tech 5 is using OpenGL 3.3 because of compatability.
OpenGL 4 and upwards contains tech only available on Dx11 class GPUs while OpenGL 3.3 contains all the tech from v4 that works on Dx10 class GPUs.

But the beauty of all of ID Softwares graphics engines, is that they release it as open source after a set amount of time.
Think of all the cool stuff modders and developers can put together when the older ID Tech 4 engine of Doom 3 fame is released open source.
    (If its not already released)

My game is perpetually zoomed in now... why?

Edit: nvm, had to do with my FOV settings.. fixed myself.

Nice to see they fixed the green shadows... that was killing the game experience for me.

I've gotten RAGE working pretty good now, but the AMD Performance Driver for RAGE is causing Java to become unstable and cause graphics card crashes now. Since Rage won't even launch in 11.9, I'm going to try 11.10 drivers I guess.

patch for me fixed a lot of things but i only had to play the last level with it. I believe if we wait a bit loner for more mature drivers everything will be OK. this is the first serious OpenGL game for a long time so except for some scary things until they fix up the game. i believe they are still holding back other engine features.

with few configs the game run just fine if i did not alt+tab because then i was getting like 20ish FPS otherwise i was playing it at 60-50 frames no matter what.

love to see more games with id tech5. the story was nice but i was experting more out of it and to be a bit harder cause i finished it in less than 10 hours at nightmare difficulty, with only few races to finish with gold and maybe some side quests. shame i did not save the game earlier to to finish other things. I dont know if i was fast because uni stated this week or the game was short.

i will wait and maybe i will finish it one in easy :p

Well I just finished the game on the laptop in my sig and I had zero problems, only thing I had was flickering in the menu but that got solved with turning off v-sync in the nvida control panel.
It's amazing how well this game plays on this 3~4 year old machine... This really astounded me B-D
oh and it's a great game, a bit short, but money well spent :p

It's really too bad the PC version is riddled with so many bugs at release. The patch helped a lot, I don't have stuttering or bugs right now. I just have the texture pop-in issue, but that seems to be a core engine problem and I don't expect ID to have that rectified for a while.

CatalystCreator tweeted that a performance Rage driver should be released. The current Rage Preview 11.10 drivers are just so the game works, they are not improvements on performance.

The AI is the most dynamic I've seen of any game so far. I'm not saying they are smart but they are unpredictable. They may go hide, and they hide well. It's a lot easier to pick off enemies in COD and other FPS games than this one. The weapons really are limited. In BC2 you can snipe people with a shotgun. Even if you are only 50 ft away, the shotgun is pretty useless in Rage, but close rage, it's a blood fest. This is actually wrong, a shotgun in RL is actually accurate up to 100 ft or more. This you can find on youtube if you search some Russian gun fanatic. You proves to you can hit dead on target, bulls eye with a shotgun from much farther distance than in these games.

But back to the AI, I'm liking it. They come from all angles, from the ground, crouched, hiding, even prone. Then you see them doing acrobatics from the roof and the sides of the walls. And the game has surprises, like finished a quest. Leaving the mission area to go home, thinking it's easy way home... Nope. Two bandits blast you with auto assault rifles in your face as soon as you leave. Haha, yeah I died.

The game as a fun FPS game so far to me is very enjoyable. The voice acting is good. I like the silent main character types, like this game. The guns feel great, they sound great. The game just looks fantastic as well, just too bad that there are so many low quality textured items and objects though. But I do get a real sense of something terrible happened and that the land and climate has been changed drastically.

This thread is full of negative. But for me this is definitely an ID game. And that's what I was looking for. When ID fixes the core engine issues like texture, vram, etc, this game IMO should be great. And I wouldn't be surprised if ID releases a high res texture pack later to fix some of those problems as well.

So far for fun, gameplay and mechanics, I give this game a 8.5/10. Due to texture pop-in and low res textured objects, 7.5/10. When it's fixed, I think this game would nearly be a 9/10 for a single player FPS game.

Took me 12.5 hours to complete it, the only sidequests I had left was 4 races to complete which I couldn't be bothered to do as my car was already kitted out.

The first half of the game feels very well laid out and planned, get to the second area and its over all too fast, almost feels like a rush job to get the game out the door. Never mind the lack of a last boss, you get given a super powerful gun at the end used it twice as I had no real need to.

Apart from the few issues with the texture pop in etc it ran very well on my 8800 GTS and was enjoyable, if they iron the issues out its worthy of a 8/10 I would say. Takes a hell of a lot to keep me playing a FPS as I normally get bored, believe it or not I've never finished the first HL or Fear as got fed up with them.

lol :D. It has to do something with texture loading time or something like that which this game suffers/suffered (dunno I didn't play it, it says so in the review + forums), so author made a nice addition to his review.

Want 60 FPS with 4x AA, 1080p, VSync, AF high on a 5870M?

    atioglxx.dll

Drop this ATI GL file into the install directory of your Rage folder. It's working for me great. Fraps here showing 60 FPS steady most of the time, occasionally will drop to 40 FPS. This is both when I'm on mission to make mutants into blood art, and when I'm racing in the barrens.

Finished Rage. 12.5 hours of awesome fun. I enjoyed it a lot. With the new patch and copying the atioglxx.dll into the folder, I enjoyed 60 FPS vSynced with 4X AA and high AF @ 1080p. Game looked great and was smooth.

I hope there is an expansion on the way. I really liked the AI. The AI was just a lot of fun. Really fast and the most mobile AI I have seen in ANY game so far. Climbing from everything that is climbable, swinging and so acrobatic. They also dodge quickly. Though the wing boomerang makes it really easy, slices them up no matter where the mutant goes. Relying on the shotgun makes the gun a lot more fun, and also dying more often.

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4970/rage-against-the-benchmark-machine/2

According to AnandTech, Nvidia does have a large advantage over AMD in Rage though. The textures are highly compressed jpeg format which are decoded into the DXTC format on the fly while playing. Nvidia uses CUDA to transcode this while AMD relies on the CPU to decode the textures. The textures normally would have taken up 1TB of space, so Carmack to had find a way to compress it to 16GB. Maybe this is a good thing? Let CPU do the work? I'm unsure about it.

One thing I noticed for why the texture files are so huge. There are no repeated textures that I could see. Unlike DA2 and other games from BioWare and others, Rage looks fantastic because all the areas are new. They didn't repeat areas or textures far as I could tell.

At the moment no, mainly due to the fact the 8800m gts is really at the low end, once I get a new rig ill be replaying in on Hard for a bit more of a challenge, found it a tad too easy on normal, I died once the full game by driving off a cliff lol.

Yes thanks. Might give them a try. I was just saying that I couldn't find the amd page that it would be linked from, like for example this preview 2 drivers link page.

AMD Catalyst? 11.10 Preview Driver Version 2

    Thanks. :D
Now i can enjoy all my other OpenGL stuff including Minecraft thanks to the 11.9 WHQL driver, and even with the noticable texture poppings in RAGE it runs much better than when i used the 11.10 Prerelease 2 drivers.
Performance was great, but NPCs was glitchy and Minecraft failed to start.
