    Hey guys,

I just bought an M15x, and am currently making a list of games I want to play as soon as my baby comes home :)

So, I ask you Notebook guru's, what is the scariest game out there? Everyone has a different opinion but it would be great if each person picked 1-2 games and explained why they found it scariest. For me, a game being scary is all about the sounds/music, the general atmosphere, and how believable the enemies are (like a low polygon, bad AI monster isnt exactly very scary...)

Been years since I've last played a scary game, but I still remember FEAR. Damn that little girl was scary :S

Hmm looks interesting Reizo. I like the idea that you can't kill anything, just run. Makes it scarier I bet :p

Dead Space (Extremely unnerving), Amnesia: The Dark Decent (Very scary, I have to play with the lights on), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. especially underground sections, and it is open world with a-life so anything can happen, Metro 2033 made by the designers of the underground sections of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. very immersive game especially if Ranger Mode is on (Free DLC for PC), Cryostasis, very creepy game on a derelict Soviet Ice Breaker in the Arctic, and finally Call of Cthuhlu: Dark Corners of The Earth.

    Here's some previews.

Well, I don't play many horror games as I enjoy RTS more than FPS but here's two that are quite scary.

First, there's S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat which is based after the previous one: Shadow of Chernobyl which is basically the Chernobyl disaster that occurred in 1986. This game is similar to FEAR and has you shooting mutants and aliens and what not.

Next, Bioshock. Released in 2007 and the sequel Bioshock 2 released earlier this year are great FPS games with an interesting story as well. It's a really freaky game and it's not advised to be played at night in a dark room with surround sound :p The visuals and sounds in the game really make it seem like you're there.

Both are great games and worth trying.

The problem with most supposedly scary games that give you guns (for example, Dead Space) is that some people (like me) instead of being scared by their lack of ammo, get this "come and get me" feeling, and the games becomes one big heroic final stand instead of a scary experience.

FEAR 2 is an awesome game. You should definitely borrow it from someone if you can. Or just buy it.

System Shock is incredibly old school, but it's a real scary game. I hear Amnesia is a good one, too, and the various FEARs will give you scares, as well.

I'd say the underground labs in the first STALKER as well as Penumbra. I really need to get back to playing Penumbra. I remember my first encounters with the spiders and wolves. Still raises the hairs on the back of my neck lol. FEAR has it's moments, but that game's strength is more or less suspense and action, not digging deep down into your real instincts and fears. Metro 2033 has shown itself to be pretty good to in this regard as well.

Dead Space is my all time favorite scary game. I got the wife to play it a bit on our 360 and the whole time she's muttering 'I don't like it...' but she kept playing haha. It's fun stuff.

I also really liked System Shock (older game but damn it was good). My all time old school scary game was The Suffering. It's even scarier than the first Fear.

Wife watched me play Dead Space, and so does my 4 year old (his fav game to watch)

When my wife watched me play Amnesia she told me to turn it off because it was freaking her out, and this is in the middle of the day with the lights on so on a scare factor I think Amnesia is atleast 2x worse but Dead Space is a FPS and Amnesia is a puzzle solving horror survival hybrid so they are totally different games.

If I had to buy just one I would get Dead Space it was fun, and took a decent amount of time to beat. If I wanted to scare the crap out of somebody or myself I would get Amnesia, but most people can afford both since they are only like $20 each.

After playing Amnesia I really tried to play Penubra but I just could not get into it with its dated graphics and horrible controls.

Trying to do things that were dead simple in Amnesia like open/close a door are a chore in Penumbra. Atleast overture, maybe the 2nd one is better.

Just a note with Doom 3 you either need a good surround sound system or wear headphones. One of the most amazing things about Doom 3 are the sounds. They managed to make it very atmospheric and did an excellent job with three dimensional sounds even with headphones.

Fear 1 I would agree. FEAR 2: Origins I assume, is fun. But not as atmospheric or scary as the first.

Metro 2033 wasn't in the least bit scared, entire time when I played, few hours I did.

Yeah, Overture is a bit rough around the edges, but black plague is much better. You can play black plague directly if you wish, just read a bit about overture to know what happened.

Boy is Black Plague a superb game... I don't want to spoil the good stuff.

It had some pretty poor AI/enemies and some glaring plot holes, but granted BP was much better than Overture and the atmosphere & puzzle-solving was well done. I was more impressed by the imminence generated by the environment and threat of looming danger than any real danger itself (as I mentioned in a previous thread, hiding in the shadows from a lurking enemy was a real hair-raiser; but then having the enemy actually find you only to play hide and seek around a support beam was a huge an anti-climax)

It remains a toss-up between STALKER and Penumbra.

FEAR had me going most of the way for a rather silly reason...

I read somewhere about "the ladder scene", which was touted by other players as the scariest part of the game. From then on, I was extremely nervous every time I went down a ladder, which happens often enough that I was on edge most of the way through the game.

It was only after I finished the game that I realized the ladder scene is actually pretty early in the game... When I realized exactly what everyone was making such a big fuss about, I was a bit disappointed, but the anticipation while I played the game was totally worth it regardless.

Personally, I'm rather excited for Amnesia, though I'm waiting for a sale before I buy it (Black Friday or Christmas, I hope).

There are also a couple decent horror mods for Half-Life 2, though the most promising one I played (don't recall the name) was unfortunately very lacking in gameplay, so a good idea was wasted by poor design.

Games are only scary if they put you in a mindset from the get go....silent hill, for example.

But on ze pc, I'd say check out penumbra for sure. It's namesake lives up to itself in the game, as well as in FFXII.

I'd agree with this. The game has to set the tone immediately for the apprehension to set foot. If it's just random and in the middle of gameplay, it's not as effective. I think that's why FEAR 1 is better than FEAR 2. The apprehension and the unknown is what gave the game it's atmosphere. With FEAR 2 the beginning sequence wasn't that good and you kinda knew what to expect. So it just didn't have that same feeling.

Also graphics make a difference. I think film grain does wonders for a horror game. Slick graphics not so much.

i'd have to say playing Doom 3 in the dark with good headphones is probably the scariest game i've played. i remember this one part where an imp lunges at you through a staircase just as you're going to go up them, i jumped every time i got to that part.

hehe I remember the first time I played the new doom and I was still at the beginning and you walk up near this guy and he just pops out of no where asking if he can help you lol. Scared the crap right out of me hehe.

I didn't find the overall game to be that scary, mostly just annoying hehe.

Doom 64 was scarier to me than Doom 3.

Doom 3 made great use of dark and lighting effects and had great sound effects and supported 3DCMSS from my x-fi wonderfully but still it didnt give me that adrenalin scare like doom 64 did when some pixalated invisible demon just would appear infront of me out of nowhere wen I had like 5HP left and was already on edge because I was so close to death.

Doom 64 was my fav of all the doom games, great puzzle solving to find those hidden laser upgrades and just a great survival shooter.

I gotta see how well it plays using the PS3 controller on an emulator.

This. Hearing the slaves, but not knowing where they were was creepy.

I played through with a buddy and had to walk home past a grave yard in the pitch black afterward. Needless to say, I sprinted.

i'd have to say the most un-nerving game for me was the fear series. seeing the girl in the corner of your vision... but then as you go to take a look... vanished.

i also found a game called "the experiment" a.k.a "eXperience112) quite freaky. You play a character who's stuck in a room with nothing but a computer connected to a monitoring system. you communicate to a woman through various means like turning on/off lights, unlocking doors, activating electrical equipment.

Many games suggested here are not that scary IMO because most of them just normal action games.

A game which is pure pain (in a good psychological sense) is silent hill 2, however I don't know how the pc version is, only played it on PS2.

The original FEAR had a few scary moments especially the parts where Alma would just show up. I remember playing in my room with the lights all turned out and then when Alma would just show up as I was climbing up a ladder.

Needless to say I turned off the game for that night and resolved to only play the game in the morning.

Definitely an old enough gamer to remember just how freaked out I was playing Half Life. I remember getting through some Doom games, and I thought this would be cake - little did I realize just how far ahead of the story-telling curve and sound that the nice people of Valve were.

I needed to wash my palate out with some good ole Tie-Fighter, or Wing Commander after that game. (whatever happened to the space-sim adventure genre anyway?)

That being said, I'll also be the first to admit I just hate horror movies.

Needless to say Deadspace was hands-down the scariest thing to play in recent memory. (especially at first when you think you kill things, only to have them surprise you in horrific fashions)

Not that this has anything to do with it - but for whatever reason as a young'un gaming, I remember being totally freaked out (in a good way) while playing "The Dig"

God I miss those old Lucas Arts adventure games (Full Throttle ftw baby! :D)

I know, I LOVED the Wing Commander series. I'd pay good money for a (well done) modern version.
