This reminds me of my brother in HL2. I think it was at the intro screen and one of those flashers came and flashed him. You should have seen him jump since he didn't know what it was.
-
Most of FEAR. Even when it was predictable that something was about to happen it was still scarier than I ever thought a video game could be.
I've played a bit of Doom 3 and it definitely didn't scare me one bit, the story just didn't immerse me enough and the moments that were supposed to be scary were simply startling.
I also got quite a surprise the first time I encountered a fast zombie in half life 2. I wouldn't say it was on the level of anything you'd find in FEAR, but I definitely didn't expect something like this from Half Life 2, where the zombies from the first game weren't the least bit scary. Those eerie howls and the shadows jumping from roof to roof, and then a skinless decayed monster charges you at amazing speed for a half life zombie. -
damn i must be the weird one cause not a single moment in either doom 3 or fear scared me... i guess too much of horrors and thrillers
but i'll second sc "nuke launch detected", seeing 100+ zerglings coming right at your base or carriers on the radar...
maybe a tad bloodlines - the mission with the flesh eater chick -
F.E.A.R. only scared me the first couple of times with that ***** little girl Alma.
Doom 3 had me freaked out the most though. It was the sounds along with the visuals in Doom 3 that made it so spooky though. Visuals alone weren't that scary. So many times I had to rip off my headphones and shut down the computer because I was scared s***less. Scariest parts when I heard whispers of "over here" and it really sounded like it was coming from behind me. Other part where you saw footprints being made in the blood on floor and the baby cries... ack! -
For those of you who actually said FEAR is the scariest moment in gaming, remind me to jump out from around a corner and say "boo!" if I ever meet you.
-
Sorry not everyone has nerves like Arnold Schwarzenegger?
-
System Shock 2 - Great atmosphere, scary but playable
FEAR - Couple scary moments but overall not too bad
Doom 3 - Unplayable, the repeated jump out from nowhere at every corner drove me nuts -
This thread is epic.

So no one agrees with what i said about zork/wolfenstein and syndicate?
-
Dunno....a couple times in DOOM II when there's a monster behind me but I didn't know it until it screamed and started ripping me to shreds...
-
Myself, I was addicted to X-Com when syndicate was popular and thought other Infocom titles were scarier than Zork---"The Lurking Horror" comes to mind, but I see your point/agree. -
I am old enough to have played Doom 1 on DoS though
good times! Those pixels where pretty scary back then
-
YES THE LURKING HORROR...I VAGUELY REMEMBER THAT!!!! im only 22 btw
-
I am only 18! LOL

Maybe in SC2 there will be new things to be scared about.
ANother scary moment.
Oh the part in MAx PAyne where you are in a drak rooom(someone posted this already, so i agree with him)
Monopoly"any editon"- no money left and you are in an area with lots of hotels(applicable in real life)
SCary PC games moment in reallife
Being too occupied by the game then your brother or sister suddenly spookd you from the back. -
The cubicle bit on F.E.A.R., scary shizzle
-
When I was about 10 or 11, Resident Evil used to scare the begeezus out of me. I think it was their Final Fantasy like screen transitions. One moment you're all fine then you go into the next room and find yourself staring into a nest of flesh eating zombies ready to take a bite out of your soft, supple skin. That's still the scariest game to me up to this date even though I was young.
Ravenholm in HL2 is a creeper as well. I play the game up to that point and I'm just like "Uuggghhh I hate this part". And if I have to save the game and leave during that part, I usually don't come back to HL2 anymore cuz I dread it so much. -
Feel like crapping your pants?

Just give it a go
You've been warned
I found Penumbra was my scariest game, but I dont play that many scary games
EDIT: I found the first Halo kinda scary too, but it wasn't the Flood it was that crazy guy who just shoots at you -
Minesweeper- when you click on a mine.
Scares the crap out of me. -

Doom...
Around the third level when all the lights are slowly flickering, and an invisible bull demon attacks you...no way to see them in the dark...and it was always the sound that scared me not the cheesy graphics...you could hear the bull demons coming closer with the sound like they were gnawing on something...
When doing multiplayer Doom, hearing the chainsaw spin up was always the most terrifying...there was nothing more embarrassing than getting killed by a chainsaw...(and nothing more satisfying than killing someone with a chainsaw)...
Sanitarium...
Adventure-type game...again, the graphics weren't even great at the time the game was released...but some of the cutscenes were disturbing (without being gory or overly violent) and the sound design was incredible...somehow, the game tied together Aztec culture, a circus, a haunted house, an asylum, a hive, and a pumpkin patch with only kids around into a very foreboding game...there was no single, jump-out-of-your-seat moment but the dread just gradually built...the pumpkin patch and hive chapters were particularly disturbing...one of the best stories ever in a game in my opinion... -

I get scared when you have to make a decision tp push it or not push the button. Then when you are already decided the time it takes you to push the button is the scariest part of all. -
Ravenholm in HL2 was VERY creepy, also FEAR for the first bit was crazy, had to have all the lights on and if anyone walked in on me i would jump like a firecracker lol

Crimsonman Ex NBR member
In the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, those zombies that would hump your head scared me, along with their scream thing. So did those wallmasters when they grab you, they were so annoying.
Ooh ooh ooh, and in Megaman Legends when that purple bot with two pounding arms comes around a corner and you don't expect it. It hurts!!! -
-
I wouldnt say it scared me, but it was disturbing. But while playing Quake 4 (on my desktop) i had the settings maxed out and all, then i got to the medical part, and when you are turned into the strog... that part... eghh... all that detail.... all those missing limbs... it really freaked me out to say the least. Even now as i blink i can see segments of that cut scene.

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
Burger Time gave me serious nightmares for months when I was little....no joke. I'd have panic attacks going through the deli section of the supermarket. Something about my food trying to eat me really messed with my head.
-
I swear whenever I make a move, and the computer is about to make a move, I always start shaking -

on the ps2 god of war 1
whwn you press new game the head in the background moves (creepy)
reseident was also scary. -
-
The scariest PC games i've played are System Shock 2 and Doom 3.
-
FEAR and Extraction point is great game for good shocks and scares. When those creatures pop up and kill Holiday. IN EP when you climb up a ladder in the sewers and the adult Alma takes a swipe at you.
Some talked about PS2 games anyone play the Fatal Frame series? FF2 had this boss character called falling woman. When you first meet her your going down a staircase and this thing falls passed you staring at your character as she goes by. You get to the bottom and this woman crab crawls out of nowhere with broken legs and arms and scared the he*& out of me. When you first run into Sae also she just shows up behind you covered in blood with that crazed laugh she has. Also there is a part where you look out a window with the camera and all of a sudden this kid pops up out of nowhere to scare you.
Original Doom finding a hell knight or a baron behind you with no ammo kill lthem with. -
I remember playing ski free in win 3.1, maybe like 15 years ago, I was always afraid if I fell down and the bear would come and eat me... ;-D

that fatal frame sounds good. when did it come out, is it popular and how much u think it might run for now -
I remember fatal frame, I played the second series. It was scary, cause your only weapon is camera and in order to deal really large damage to the ghost you have to be very close. The atmoshpere's also creepy..

Due to your suggestion of old game I remembered this scary moment.
Pac-MAn
When you are going to get the power up orb and a ghost also goes that way. The thing that comes across my mind is if I will get the orb first or I am eaten first. -
The first time I played Diablo II, and Andariel popped out into the room. I jumped.
-
This thread inspired me to play Condemned since so many people say its scary...I like it
-
I can't remember which C&C game it was [it would either be Tiberian Sun or that Red Alert expansion], but it was when those ANTS would suddenly pop out of those holes [ant hills?] and decimate your tanks. Of course I was young then and hated [still do] bugs, but those were freaky and unexpected. They totally weren't in the manual at all [yes, I actually read those things before!]
Scary would be playing Resident Evil II on PS, alone at night, and when the 'opening the door' animation is playing, suddenly those zombies spring out in front of you! I can still remember almost screaming and falling off the bean bag -
I'll be honest FEAR was it for me... Theres this one point about midway in the game where you go up a ladder...The way the game handles ladders you climb up a ladder face forward then when you get out of it you end up facig the ladder...
Right well i went up the ladder and then alma's giggles came from behind you, so i get to the top and see her at the landing-way ahead of you and then the mechanic turns you around and shes there too!!! i almost **** myself, it was pretty hard on my heart... -
Yeah it had it's jumpy moments. All would be quiet then all of a sudden an alien laser beam would nuke your most experienced character...man I hated that lol. I started bringing no name guys to do the scouting so my vet's wouldn't get killed. Kinda like they do on star trek
My all time most scary games were resident evil 1 (first horror game i played on playstation).
Doom 3 was pretty jumpy.
Silent Hill had it's moments too.
I think you become desensitized to these horror/jumpy games the more you play them.
I can't for the life of me find a scary movie anymore. I think I OD'd on horror movies as a child, movies just don't scare me anymore. I'm starting to the feel the same way with games as well. -
Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly (twins) might be hard to find check a game stop. Fatal Frame 3 might still be in stores. I can still find it at some Wal Marts. Yeah having the ghost be right in your face to deal maximum damage to them (Fatal Frame Shot) is just really creepy especially when they are the really horribly mutilated ones. The guys with their eyes sewn shut, the Village elder, the 2nd to last boss cant remember what he was called are afew that come to mind.
Not to mention like FEAR, Fatal Frame series just have sickest story lines with no good ending lol. Plus the character is a teen girl with the reflexes of a noodle lol. Makes running and shooting a bit difficult especially the times she surrounded. Good game though I think I will play it again. -
