Does the game requires you to have an Internet connection to play?

    My GPU is a 6950 2gb, I don't think it's the problem.

EDIT: Solved my problem. Forced Oblivion to use only two cores, and my performance problems are gone. Stupid game.

So I think Skyrim is earning my personal "Game of the Year" award. Yes, it has weird bugs that crop up every once in a while, but they are few and far between and the sheer, eyeball-melting awesomeness of this game outweigh the odd crash every now and then. I'm on the last quest for the Thieves Guild quest line and I have been VERY impressed by the story so far. And that's just one of the gajillion factions!

Yeah, I think Skyrim is going to be my GotY. Battlefield 3 is getting the runner-up prize along with Arkham City (on the 360).

I just installed the Skyrim Nexus Modmanager Beta. I love the fact that you can download the mods and install them so easily at the click of a button. Due to this I have tested out a lot more mods, I recommend this to all, especially if you are a bit lazy when it comes to installing mods :p

I started thinking after starting a new character. I really wish Bethesda could get a little more creative in the way they start off the TES games. In Morrowind I started as a prisoner on a boat, in Oblivion I started as a prisoner in a jail, in Skyrim I start as a prisoner in the back of a horse drawn cart....

Where's the creativity that we see in the other aspects of the game?

You have to admit, the whole captive thing gives them an explanation why you are almost nakid and have no money or items.

I guess they could use the whole "your ex-wife took everything in the divorce", but that wouldn't work for female characters. :)

It is a trope. It is a Bethesda tradition that every TES game the main character starts out as a prisoner in a foreign land. Changing that will basically anger the fanbase. Actually this idea started as early as TES: Arena.

    I wouldn't really call it a trope.

As a series that is all about making your own character it makes the most sense. Obviously changing the game to have it become about a single character who you can't define would anger the fanbase.

Yeah; that's basically what happened between Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2. Instead of making a character that the player wanted (Origins), they made a single pre-determined main character for 2 and it contributed to DA2's failure.

The Elder Scrolls wouldn't be The Elder Scrolls if you didn't start out as a prisoner.

It'd be like Robocop... without the robo.

Your right, i didnt include Arena with the prisoner starts. I wasn't saying they should switch to a pre-defined character, just that they could be a little more creative with the start of the game.

If a trope is what you want to call it I would call it a cliche because it's getting old and overused at this point. Starting the game by designing your character could be done without having to start in shackles every game. Maybe a fisherman finds you washed up on the shore, or you come into the new land as an adventurer and the first person you talk to asks the questions that the guard does in the others, or the game starts with the king of the land sending for help and you choose what type of person he requests thus creating your character, etc. I'm sure Bethesda could come up with something really cool considering what they have come up with for the other parts of every game in this series.

All that's just my personal opinion though. If it's not old for you starting as a criminal every game good for you. :)

I don't think you started as a prisoner in Daggerfall? As I remember it, you get summoned by the Emperor to go on a mission in the dead of night. I also think that the prisoner thing works pretty well for Skyrim, but that they could and maybe should do something a bit different for the next game.

I guess cliche is a better word than trope in this case but the thing is it is not TES when you don't start out as a prisoner. It is more like you expect it so because that is how the series always went as it started. It is like a part of what makes TES, erm... TES kind of thing.

Hey guys, I've been doing the quest where you have to find the blood of those guys related to the dwarves to get access to the eldar scroll. I've been painstakingly doing this for a couple of hours now, and I only have falmer and dark elf blood left... but I can't find any bloody dark elves. I was attacked by one once, but a bit of googling shows they are in the gray quarter of Windhelm... but where the hell is the gray quarter? NEED SOME DARK ELF BLOOD!! :D

Finding it strangely difficult to have random dragons attack me. I simply needed to be in the area previously, but now it seems that no matter how many arrows or spells I throw in its general area it refuses to acknowledge me. I am aware that there is a shout to make a dragon land in the main quest, but any ideas other than that?

I assume you didn't beat the main quest right? Because if you did there is a Thuum that you can use to force them to land... Otherwise just get closer to them or something. Dragons do have a spell of ADHD as they kind of also want to kill random fauna half-way a fight with you or something so they are probably distracted. :p

The sound tweak is pointless if you got 1.2. They fixed that in 1.2 and above. Most, if not all, CTD's came from the 4 GB allocation problem.

I have the same issue most of the time. Between when 1.2 was released and now I've only killed 1 dragon. I've come across at least 4-5 that just refused to land and fight me. Maybe they're scared?

Anyone else noticing that ore veins they mined cannot be mined again, even after waiting more than enough time for the ore to respawn? Gloombound Mine (ebony) provided a good 2-3 runs of ebony ore with a respawn time of ~10 days, but now after waiting more than 30 in-game-days I can't mine anything.

Halted Stream Camp is having the same issues, only I know I haven't visited that location in 60+ in-game-days.

    Patch v1.4? :D

EDIT: Looks like it might have been a problem related to the use of the 4GB patch with v1.3+. As soon as I tried running without it I could mine in Halted Stream. Going to try Gloombound in a minute here.

EDIT: Nope, Gloombound still doesn't work.

EDIT: Finally got it working. Turns out you have to wait until the vein respawns and then via console commands disable/enable the vein. Yuck. Buggy game indeed.

I haven't fought many dragons lately either...I've only seen a couple, and they don't seem to notice me, and they fly off. They stay well out of range of arrows or the Dragonrend shout.

I've had that happen with any version of the Skyrim executable. Sometimes they just don't attack, or their waiting for you to enter a certain area. Last night I saw one circle me a few times and then fly over to the College of Winterhold (a fairly good distance) and waited for my arrival to attack the place.

That has to be one of the most epic mods for Skyrim yet!

As some one perfectly put it
I barely use shouts in the game because they don't feel natural or intuitive but this mod that allows shouting by using your microphone changes that!

And pressing a button on your mouse to swing a sword or cast a spell is... chopped liver?

I have to say that it is pretty cute, though. If a little dorky.

I played the game today for the first time since the last patch dropped and I'm having more issues than ever. First I had the game crash to desktop 3 times in less than 45 minutes which is way more frequent than it even did the first day it came out. Now randomly I'm having screen flickering with white lines that just goes away on its own (don't think its a gpu failure). And I also stumbled across some very odd trees (picture below) then I found a lake where half of the water wasn't there, it was really funny looking because the water just stopped in the middle of the lake and fish were swimming in midair. I'm still having alot of fun playing but the random crashes are annoying if you haven't autosaved in awhile.

You're having issues related to the 2GB RAM limit with Skyrim. Nothing new. Download the 4GB patch for the game and enjoy a crash free experience.

I think it might have been in response to some of the 'infinite loop' exploits going around the web that enabled people to really overpower characters in silly ways. That being said making it impossible to temporarily boost skill strengths above 100 via potions and stuff just...it's annoying. If they want to be extra lazy they can cap it at 127 and not allow overflow. Letting 110 overflow to 10 is just programmer laziness.

Hi, I ve been getting mouse lag in first person view, only in the y axis looking down at the ground. It's more of a stutter/skip than mouse lag. Other than that the game runs smoothly. Im running on ultra preset but shadow turned down to medium with AA on 4x and AF on 8. 2630qm 128gb ssd 8gb ddr3 and 6970m 12.1 preview driver. Any help will be much appreciated.

Y-axis mouse lag is a pretty common problem, but... only when you look down at the ground? That seems a bit odd.

Running any mods? And have you edited your .inis?

I went from having almost no crashes the first 20ish hours of play, to increasingly frequent crashes after the patches and as my save file began expanding. Since I started using the 4gb patch, the crashes have dropped to next to nothing. It seems ridiculous that such a simple fix for a programming oversite would reduce the amount of errors this much, but there you have it.

If ANYONE is having issues, try using the 4gb patch first!

Speaking of other bugs though, there are a few that have really put a huge damper on my enjoyment. The first is the bug in the pelagius wing for the Mind of Madness quest. Basically
when I get to the point where it's supposed to teleport you, the game just freezes. Apparently it's a common problem with no workaround or fix available :(

    The other is in Markarth.
After you do the forsworn quest, do NOT attack any guards if you side with madanach. Doing so puts a huge bounty on your head and messes with the ai of the guards. Despite the fact that you are pardoned of any crime, the guards loop back to the point where they accuse you of doing the crimes. If you fight them, then you fight. If you try to do things peacefully and go to jail, they keep looping back and repeating the dialogue.

One way to fix it on PC is to fast travel to markarth, and before any guards run up to arrest you, hit console. Type in paycrimegold and it should warp you to some random spot and clear your bounty

Until I figured that out, I basically couldn't do anything in Markarth :(

Alright, I'm still trying to clean my pants after the last session of Skyrim.

Here's the deal. You want to get a 3d projector and set it up to make a nice 120 inch image (I just do it on my wall, it's bright enough for me). Get some Nvidia stereo 3d shutter glasses. Get Skyrim. Win.

I set the game to 1280x720 with no AA, everything else maxed (forgot to turn off Water Reflections but will on the next run) and turned off the HUD display off the in-game Display setting.

    Wow.

Fantasy world simulation at it's best. With the HUD disabled and stereo 3d on while playing in 1st person view, it almost feels like you are actually in the game. Especially when you play on a huge screen like a Projector can create. Game runs fantastic on my relatively old laptop, averaging 30 in cities and 35+ in outdoors and doing even better in dungeons.

Walking in Solitude's tavern and walking through the scene while hearing "Age of Agression" almost brought a tear to my eye by how amazingly immersive it felt to be playing Skyrim.

Was crazy to ever think about selling my Acer H5360 (only reason I didn't use it the last 3 months was due to relationship and living in another apt.)

Going to be hard to top this experience in fantasy role playing with this setup and my new sorround earphones ;)

I'd say no. Being able to block (actually block; not the half-assed 2H block) is great, shield bashing is pretty handy, and Elemental Bulwark is very useful against both casters and dragons.

It depends on your personal preference. Two-hand weapons give you significantly higher damage at the expense of some blocking ability. I would say 2H works best with good heavy armor and high health, as you won't be able to block as effectively as you can with a shield, and you won't be able to stagger enemies with a shield bash. One-handed weapons with a shield make for a more defensive combination, but you won't deal as much damage per hit.

And then there's dual-wielding one-hand weapons, which takes it a step further; you can deal the most damage of all the combinations this way and your power attacks are especially devastating, and you can combine the best attributes of multiple weapons (e.g. armor negation of a mace and the bonus crit chance of a sword), but you cannot block at all and must rely entirely on your armor and health.

You basically have to decide how much risk vs. reward you're willing to have. Sword-n-board is low risk, low reward. You can block more damage but don't deal much. Dual-wielding is on the opposite end of the spectrum; you deal the most damage, but cannot block. Two-hand weapons are sort of in the middle of the road; they deal more damage than single-hand weapons but not as much as two of them, and can block, but not as effectively as with a shield.

I personally go back and forth between sword + shield and dual swords, as I've only leveled up in 1H weapons, not 2H.
