I'm considering buying Age of Conan for cheap and check it out for a month. Is it comparable to something like Oblivion if you play it solo? Also, is it possible to play the game along with my brother (who would buy his own copy)? I'm asking because of the instancing.

No. Not by a long shot. Oblivion is open-ended. AoC appears to be open-ended but is actually quite linear and heavily scripted. It ruined the mmo immersion for me.

Yes. AoC does have a quirky way of handling instances but as long as you make sure you and your group select the correct instance then all should be good.

Have fun. I gave up on AoC many, many months ago. I enjoyed the beginning of it (Tortage) but the rest of it was 'meh'. And Funcom's attitude towards the game and it's players left a lot to be desired.

Thanks for clearing that up. Do you know if the regular edition comes with a buddy key?

Yes, I think there's three BK's in the regular. I bought (sadly) the Collector's Ed. and there was 5. But at the time of game launch the BK's would not work! It took about 4 months for Funcom to fix that, and only for those with the CE.

Wow. This was a popular discussion, with 754 posts and almost 39,000 views. The new updates really seem to have breathe new life into a game that had potential that was slowly dying out. The most recent update sounds pretty sweet: http://cdn.funcom.com/aoc/newsletter/issue23/

It's obvious that a lot of work must've been put into that. Tarantia Commons sounds incredibly deep. Player choices can affect riots, changing the environment and NPCs, you choose to side with a gang, which will affect your entire experience in Tarantia Commons (or you could side with both, though there are consequences if you're caught) there's a plague spreading around the city, and there's some cool boss fights. I would look into this game again. Funcom might've turned it around.

I wonder if I can run the new DirectX10 settings (which look pretty incredible from what I've seen) on my MacBook Pro with all of the optimizations they've added... Probably not...

Yeah, I am enjoying the new patch. A lot of good changes... I haven't spent much time in the Commons yet due to all of the ganking going on in there (I am on Tyranny). If you are on a PvE server you should be fine.

Player pop is still decent on certain servers although there are more players at the high ends.

PvP Server - Tyranny (highest pop)
PvP (RP) Server - Cimmeria (good pop)

PvE (RP) Server - Wiccana (highest pop)
PvE Server - Set (good pop)

You will get jumped/ganked on the PvP servers while questing so if you are not hardcore PvP and want to read all the quest dialog etc. you may want to roll on a PvE server.

Note: You can pay to transfer toons from any server to any other server except Tyranny.

I would recommend going as Barbarian with a two-handed weapon (Beserker spec) as a first toon and level him up to about 25 and see how you like it. They are a lot of fun and give the most/best fatalities with an edge weapon out of anyone. A Hox would also be a good one to try since they are a mage/melee class that is a bit different and fun.

Currently mages are more OP in PvP (easier to master and play) while melee classes are a bit more difficult (harder to master but more fun to play).

Judging from Age of Conan's forums, AoC is almost dying. The Rise of the Godslayer expansion has gotten high ratings from critics. I just got an email today inviting me back for ten days to try the expansion for free. This game had so much potential, but the dwindling population ruined it. What's it like now? I used to play on my desktop pre-DirectX10 enhancements before I had sold it. I would really like to play with DirectX10 effects on my MacBook Pro, but I'm not confident it could handle that.

    Holy thread resurrection, Conan!

Oddly enough I decided to throw caution to the wind and picked up the RotGS expansion based on the positive reviews. I haven't touched AoC since the last plea to come back from FunCom. I just finished reinstalling the game and will likely resurrect my toon this w/e, maybe as early as tomorrow. Unless I wait for another call back email to play for free.

On a related note, it's too bad the current MMO practice in general does not allow for free 30 day game time whenever an expansion is released. I can play 30 days free on a new account with Godslayer but on an existing account I'll have throw out some more chump change if I wish to try with my leveled toons.

I hadn't realized AoC is compatible on Mac. Is it native or does it need to run via Bootcamp? If the latter I'm sure there will be performance issues as even on a Windows machine with DX10, AoC is quite demanding. When I play it's strictly on my desktop.

Age of Conan will have to be played through Boot Camp, so I'd be using the Windows client. I would probably be playing Age of Conan right now with the offer that I got to try the game again with the expansion for ten days if there was a Mac client since I don't feel like booting into Windows and installing it right now. Check your email if you want ten days of free play and haven't used your account in a while. Funcom can take a day or two to send both of my email addresses the newsletter, so it probably takes them a day or two to send out any special offers.

I have played Age of Conan on my MacBook Pro through Windows before with everything almost maxed out and it ran above twenty frames per second before the DirectX 10 enhancements. I'm interested to see how it will run now.

I just realized that this was the most popular thread of May 2008:

Most Popular Laptops for May 2008

Kind of interesting, especially considering how the game is becoming significantly less and less popular.

Anyone here still playing? I only started a few days ago after reading the very positive reviews of RotGS so far it seems great to be honest. The population on my server (Fury) doesn't seem to bad either I haven't been anywhere thats empty yet, all of Tortage has people everywhere. The graphics are awesome too, though it does seem to have an issue with ATI cards/drivers atm since I get a weird blue shader glitch on my desktop, yet it runs perfect on my laptop lol. Both at same settings DX9 all max.

Idk, I'm considering reactivating. As R3v4n asked, is anyone still playing? Worth paying to try out RotGS?

They had really improved the lockups in the months after the game was released so I'd imagine they're a very rare occurrence for anyone with a decent computer now.

nah i bought, downloaded the game and ran teh file verifier multiple times .Plus trying a laundry list of work arounds, it still would still crash and lockup on me.

I have a gateway P-7805U which runs every thing fine but it didnt like AoC. I was running Vista SP1 at the time though not sure it SP2 would have made a difference. Its the only thing i can really think of.

I haven't had any lock ups as yet, the only glitch with the weird blueness I fixed by changing my driver from 10.6 to 10.5. I run it on my laptop and pc which are XP 32 Bit and Vista 64 Bit seems to run fine on both. I'd say its for sure worth reactivating if your considering it, I mean I never played it at launch so I don't know what it was like back then but its great now.

Take advantage of this while you can: Best Buy is offering 60-day cards for $14.99 each. That's better pricing than Funcom offers on their site. There's a limit of three per order, though half a year of AoC for $45 is a good value, best deal available, actually. Funcom doesn't make 30-day cards and the description says 60 days, so you are paying half the price to play. I bought three impulsively after never playing the game for two years but wanting to retry it, and I'm be angry if they somehow turn out to be 30-day cards, but I'll keep my hopes up that the description is correct.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures Game Card - Windows

The new expansion is also on sale for $20, though I didn't get far enough in the world to want to purchase that now. I could see myself playing for $7.50 a month, but I might stop playing if I have to pay $15 again. I'll try to stock up on more if I do like the game again. Hopefully a few people here can order some and the news doesn't spread. I'd recommend in-store pickup if your store has any in-stock because the stores definitely only carry 60-day cards, but may not have the same price in-store.

Hoping my MacBook Pro has no trouble with the DX10 settings. It ran the game maxed-out in DirectX 9 other than AA (set at either 2x or 4x) and AF pretty smoothly.

GameStop has the 60-day game card listed at $12.99, but doesn't have it in-stock online. I might call a store that has them out of curiousity to find out if they have the cheaper price as well. This doesn't seem permanent. These retailers may have just overstocked on the game cards based on early game sales and are now trying to get rid of them. Nonetheless, Funcom has been putting a lot of work into AoC and I'll support their efforts to make a very good MMORPG a pretty great MMORPG.

By the way, I asked Funcom if I could retry the game through that 10-day offer that expired before I got to use it. I'll post their reply in case any other old subscribers want to try the game again before spending any more money. I've already put $170 into the game when I played it for a few months after launch, what's another $45 to try it again for six months?

Long post, sorry :p. Just read the first paragraph if you want Age of Conan gametime for half-price from BestBuy.
