just got the demo,i get around 30~35 fps on 800x600 with mid-low-ish settings
-
Meh....
Played it twice on xbox 360
Played it once (incomplete) on PC
I have to say that I am disappointed. I know I am going to get the game sooner or later, but I don't see what other people are seeing who say it's amazing....I don't consider it a 9.7 game. It IS very unique....but it's just not my type of game.
Oh, also, I was able to run it on basically max settings, 1400x900 resolution on my 1520. Lack of AA was pretty damn noticeable and annoying.
Thanks for the download links, though. -
Ran great on my 8800gts system, mostly over 80fps, I shouldda had Vsync on since there was alot of tearing. Some areas dropped to the lower 40's but almost always over 60. 1440x900 max possible settings in DX10.
Hopefully those rumored drivers from Nvidia will keep it always over 60fps.
I really dont think that this demo will reflect the actual game much at all. It's just the intro they give you, much like the extremely linear first 15 minutes of Oblivion. Kinda dissapointing how short the demo was though, only 15 minutesand for a 1.8 GB DL
For those of you who might have a rapidshare account, there is a rapidshare version you can download, it's ALOT faster, went about 1.2MBps for me. -
I have a problem with mine. I just installed it, and ran it on my Inspiron 1520, but after the plane crash scene and showing the Bioshock logo, I get a big blank screen. Nothing happens, and when I press Enter, the game exits out. Does anyone else experience this, or is this a driver problem?
-
ran it on my asus s96s, the fps on 1280x800 was about ~24 with high settings, but it was a bit weird that changing the resolution to 1024x768 and setting to medium it gained about only 10fps, usually the fps boost would be higher.
-
Not sure if anyone have mentioned this yet (I'm not going to read through all 14 pages of this thread), but NVidia has posted a beta driver which boasts "improved BioShock compatibility". I don't know if ATI has/will do the same, but I'd definitely keep an eye out for it.
According to the bioshock website, this is the reason for the delay of the PC demo. They were timing it to be released at the same time as the relevant driver updates. -
Has anyone tried running this on a X1700 equivalent card or a card around the same power? (X1600,X2500,GF7600) I just want to know a rough estimate of how my laptop will run with this game. My dl is taking forever.

I did a quick, preliminary test on my system which has an x1600 256mb and it seemed pretty smooth at 1024 x 768 Medium Settings.
I will play it later and post my results. -
Smooth at custom settings (high settings, turned off high detail shaders and set textures to medium) @1280x800. This is while OC'd though.
Update: Sweet. The new bioshock drivers allow me to set the textures to high as well. -
How or where did you get the updated drivers from for notebook? I tried installing from the provided link and it says my hardware was incompatible.
Btw, I've got the G1 with the go 7700 and even without the updated drivers the demo runs beautifully. Just hoping I can snag a copy of the full game in short order since I didn't pre-order (wasn't sure until now if it would actually run on my laptop). -
You need to save download the .inf file as well.
-
The modified inf's basically shove the driver down your hardware's throat whether it likes it or not. Its hit or miss whether or not they could be the best drivers for your system.
-
-
I can live with that...time to show this piece of crap who's boss!
EDIT:
-
Does it work well in your tests with the Go 7950GTX?

This demo is great... I like the atmosphere of it the most when you first come out from that lift, it feels really dark and creepy. The bot hacking was nice & easy too, got all those machines fighting for me...

Just curious if anyone with a X3100 has tried it. Before people laugh, I've heard claims that with the latest XP 14.31 drivers enabling full DX9.0c capability, BioShock is just "playable" on 800x600 with lowest settings. I wanted to see if this is true, since this would be quite a coup for Intel and IGP users.
-
well my x700 and 1.7 gig pent 4 cannot run it officially, just updated the drivers, ughhh im pissssed!
-
it might be cause it lacks shader model 3

The minimum CPU is also supposed to be a 2.4GHz P4.
I still haven't figured out why they exclude the X1550 when they allow the slower X1300. -
x1550=x1300
Which makes it even weirder that it's excluded. But this ain't the frist games I've seen this. Still is very weird. -
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
The demo runs great on my desktop, only negative aspect of the new NV 32 bit vista GF8 driver thus far is that it disables scaling, which is a pain for me since I run alot of software that doesnt have widescreen support.

What I want to know is, how do we force the DirectX9 path on DX10 hardware. I'm sure based on what I've been seeing about DX10 performance that the game will be much faster and look basically the same on the 8400GS if we could drop it to DX9.
-
Theres an option to turn dx10 freatures off in the settings.
-
Installed the Beta 163.44 drivers. It doesn't seem to effect my performance in either direction, but it has fixed the crashing bug and stuttering that I had with the stock Sager drivers. No problems so far with other games either. Cool.

nVidia 6xxx series was fully DX9.0c/SM3.0 compliant and the 7xxx series was built on top of it. -
ahhhh ok, thank you for the explaination, i knew this card was a piece of sh!t, this is the first game i cannot run then....[tear]
-
Hopefully ill be able to run it at 1440x900 at reasonably highish settings.
I'm not blown away by the graphics tbh! (HL2 looks better hrmm)
havent played demo yet though so ill judge after that
and from the varios videos and footage ive seen. A lot of the gameplay centres around 'Room puzzle solving' (by that i mean the enemy and scenes are scripted and you have various ways of dealing with it) -
That Getbot is unreal. I was getting 150KB/S constant. I was getting about 20kb /s when using just the single http links
-
EDIT: I couldn't get past the intro scene with the mac smoking using dx10, but when I switched it to dx9 I can play the demo fine. I did notice a loss of visual quality but at least it runs. Right now I'm using the default video drivers that came with my C90, when I get home I will try the Bioshock beta drivers from laptopvideo2go.com -

I still haven't decided if I'm going to get the game for PC or Xbox because I'm not sure how well it will run with my gpu go7600 and I don't want to download the demo since its over a gig. Can someone post some more benchmarks with a similarily powered gpu please? Also a Bioshock performance thread would be nice.

Elithx try the new 163.44 drivers, they should offer noticeably signifigant improvement. ALso my c90 gets back to gentech today, hopefully the can get it back to me by next friday!

For those picking it off usenet; The demo 'BioShock PC Demo-Multi5-PLAYABLE' posted by UHQ has corrupted par files.
If you open QuickPar the files 8, 15 and 17 look damaged. They are not!
Just unrar and install. Don't use the par files. -
I'm playing in dx9 from now on, it's much smoother I'm averaging 25-30 fps compared to the 15-20 in dx10. This is using 163.16, not 163.44. I didn't notice too much of a difference in visual quality, it still looked amazing. In fact it may even look better to me since it's smoother to play.
-
This is odd. I just turned my laptop back on today, and my AVG scanner picked up the setup.exe as a trojan virus. Is anyone else having this problem?
-
Bioshock demo is beautiful at 1440x900 (native res for me)
I have everything on. (x205-S9349)
Frame rate is usually above 24 and rises to 35+, but falls to 15 sometimes... credit given where credit is due... the game engine makes even 15fps feel playable. Not once did I feel the game engine was in my way to enjoy the game... No stuttering or waiting except the original load times to begin the demo. Let me put it this way, I actually didn't believe fraps when it said 15fps the first time... it most definitely didn't resemble 15fps in any other game I have played.
I HAD to update to the 163.44 drivers with a modded inf to play. Playing with the original stock drivers at stock clocks resulted in crashes all over the place with most of them being before I even started the game.
With stock drivers plane crash = game crash.
This of course disables overclocking... the 8700 being such a massively good overclocker, this hurts quite a bit.
I am confident that returning my 24% core OC and my 34% memory OC will help with the frame rate.
I had only the time to run through the demo twice and thus did not try to turn down settings.
(which would also likely help)
All I can say is wow...
I actually felt sorry for the inhabitants right up until they try and kill you... The game's detail even in the demo gives you a glimpse of the lives before the died or went bonkers and the "too spliced up" and "mother" scene are enough to elicit real pity and pangs of guilt even when the inhabitants then try killing you...
You very quickly get caught up in the corruption of these people when you realize that you did the very same thing to yourself that these crazed people did... you did it to get out of a bad situation... your intentions were good...
Now you can use lightning and fire... and that is very useful and often the difference between life and death. How many will you kill and loot to keep this ability so you can survive?
How long before you lose your humanity?
The depth of this game's (no puns intended) psycological horror can and SHOULD follow you to the real world. -
KernalPanic, I'm assuming that's in DX10 mode? Have you tried it in DX9 mode?
-
yes, in DX10 mode, no to DX9 mode
Can try it later tonight in DX9 mode if you like. -
-
setup.exe
is reported as a trojan horse generic6.ums
uhmmm
i downloaded the demo from fileplanet. -
So it's another case of poor DX10 performance? And this is supposed to be one of the first 'real' DX10 games? That's disappointing.

3.1 Installer Issues
--------------------
The BioShock installer will automatically patch to the latest version of the BioShock game application as part of the install process. YOU MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET IN ORDER TO INSTALL THE GAME.
A progress bar will show the state of the patch download. Please do not interrupt the download or deactivate your internet connection during the download. If the download does not complete successfully, you can attempt to restart the download using the Start/Restart button.
The downloader uses internet proxy and port settings as set up through Internet Explorer. If you have not set these, you can manually configure proxy and port settings in the BioShock installer. If you're not sure what values to put here, contact your ISP or 2K support at http://www.2kgames.com/bioshock/support/.
Some internet security software may detect this download as a Trojan or other compromisation of internet security.
^^^^ has to be the first time ive heard of a patch for a demo..... -
-
If DX9 runs twice as well, then perhaps this is a victory for DX9... but frankly, DX10 looks stunning and does not get in the way of gameplay.
To be fair, ill have to find out what DX9 turns off and get the visual quality similar and then compare. -
Note that DX10 differs from previous DX versions in that it is designed to increase peformance and not add much in the way of eye candy...
Of course, if you can increase performance, then you can turn more features on as well...
