Epic Store Boss Calls Paradox “Greedy” After Publisher Removes Bloodlines 2 from EGS Sale

Ha, when a group of similarly minded souls get together, and fight over the best way to get the last dollar. Ya gotta love it when a plan doesn't come together.
"Hey, ya gotta's play da game right, or da sucker's will catch on, capeesh? Wink Wink."
Given enough time they'll all compete ["out smart" each other] for the last scraps instead of working together in a mutually trusting way to the benefit of all.
That's why Steam and the other's can sit back and watch the clown show and not worry about it.

Hopefully they tank or straighten up soon.
I'm good with either. Lol
Honestly I laughed my ass off as I heard about people being banned for buying games too fast or buying games to gift friends.
Particularly because as my friend told me I was busy buying out steams Warhammer section at once.

Interestingly, I got a different read than both the article author and the video commentator on the 2nd follow up quote from the article:
Metro Exodus publisher says the Epic store is its “leading digital platform” in unit sales [wrong, console sales were greater than PC sales]
https://www.pcgamesn.com/metro-exodus/sales
"“ Epic Games store has exceeded our expectations in terms of sales in actual units of both Metro Exodus and Satisfactory during the quarter,” Wingefors tells us. “Epic Games store is in fact the group’s leading digital platform in terms of revenue generated by units sales in the quarter ending March.”"
I don't blame them for missing it, as the meaning rely's on a careful parsing of the statement. Let's break it down further...
"... the groups leading digital platform in terms of revenue generated by units sales..."
That part in bold is the key, and simply means that each unit sold generates more revenue on the Epic platform than the other platforms, - which we already know is 88% - which is a higher cut than any other platform, including consoles - which are 70% cut for digital and 50% cut for physical.
Removing the double plural makes it easier to catch: "... in terms of revenue generated by unit sold...".
It's the way it's worded that is meant to misdirect and confuse - making the reader read into it what they expect to read.
We still don't know what the actual sales numbers were for each platform, and of course they'll never know how many they would have sold if they had kept the game on Steam, the platform it was advertised on and pre-sold on - before it was ripped off from Steam and put on Epic at the last minute.
The article also quoted just before the above quote:
" During its latest financial results, THQ Nordic noted that Metro Exodus sales made it “the largest game launch” in the company’s history, but that the “absolute majority” of those sales were on console. Many fans of the historically computer-focused series took that to mean PC players had abandoned the game over its Epic store exclusivity, but CEO Lars Wingefors says that’s not the case. "
As shown in the video the previous Metro releases sold far more "units" on PC than console:

It's nice to see a developer voice their position, and to be so open and pure in their responses. If this Twitter post is to be believed, the game will come out on Steam at some indeterminate point. Fat lot of good that will do the backers who signed up for a Steam key (myself among them). The comments on that Kickstarter post are now well in excess of 1,200. The Shenmue fanbase is rabid, and they are beyond angry right now. Even people who backed only the PS4 version are sympathetic. Yu Suzuki has stated that he doesn't want S3 to be the last game of the series, but I think this decision has now sealed the franchise's fate once and for all. The only thing that can save it now is for them to pull a Metro Exodus and give Steam keys to backers as was first promised.killkenny1 and hmscott like this. -
Sadly Shenmue 3 seems to be going the worst so far, no Steam keys - Epic Only - and No Refunds! After looking at all of the backer levels, with amazingly high levels of investment - well beyond the simple cost of the game, I don't think this is going to go well in the long run for backers. Been a fan myself since my Sega Dreamcast version, but wasn't a backer, although I saw it start up back in 2015 at the time it wasn't of interest - I think I saw all of the "goodies" and thought better of getting involved. Glad to see it almost made it on it's own without Epic, too bad it got sucked in by Deep Silver.

At the time the Kicstarter ended, the average average backer pledge was more than $80. I personally put up more than $200 for physical PS4 and PC versions on top of in-game unlocks and a t-shirt. At the very least, I can change my reward to a second PS4 copy that I can sell.
A theory I've read says that Epic must have thrown a fortune of money at Deep Silver for this, and they took it because the game is unlikely to sell very well at retail since the fanbase already "pre-ordered" it via the Kickstarter. This makes a degree of sense, but at the same time, they've completely incinerated all the good will that has been a part of the fanbase for nearly two decades. Maybe Ys Net didn't have a choice in the matter, but they will suffer the consequences.
Now this is still my favorite video game franchise of all time. In the extremely unlikely event that a fourth installment gets the green light and is done through Kickstarter, I will back it, but only for the bare minimum to secure a copy.hmscott likes this. -

This review of the granduer and disappointment of Shenmue Dreamcast, brought home all the reasons I didn't follow up and join the Kickstarter in the first place.
The slowness of the pace, the difficulty of finding or following clues and direction in the game, and finally the timing element tied to the game time of day with events needed to progress happening only once a day.
If you missed the time you needed to "let the clock run out till another day" in the game, this being not as often as you might think but when it happens it brings about a certain kind of frustration that was purposful but I can understand why it's not appreciated by most players.
Then there are the localization to English being --- limited --- and the seemingly conflicting words vs actions which turns out to have been developer misunderstandings of the directions given by their boss Yu Suzuki.
This all was a lot to get through, but knowing it was a blockbuster development ($46M?), coupled with it being the killer game for Sega Dreamcast helped.
That was until it became clear that Shenmue 1 was only part of the story, a rather sparse one at that, and that there were 15 more parts of the 16 part story...
So, is Shenmue III part 3 of the story? With 12 more parts left to tell the whole story?

Not sure I'll miss Shenmue III if it stays on EGS and doesn't get put into full release...
Given Shenmue's arguably tragic history coupled with heroic levels of effort and resource expenditures, the payout being taken from EGS seems almost inevitable.
Even with $7M in raised funds doesn't come close to the Shenmue 1 $46M budget, and although I doubt EGS made up that difference, the endless consumption of resources by Yu Suzuki for this series is enabled by such windfall's.Last edited: Jun 13, 2019 -

The very slow, methodical pacing of the OG Shenmue was a deliberate design decision by Yu Suzuki because he wanted players to become truly immersed in the world. While it worked well for his home Japanese audience, it didn't so much for gamers in the West. This situation was rectified in Shenmue II with the ability to fast forward time until the next story trigger. I wish they would have brought this to the first game when it was re-released last year.
The $46 million figure is also not entirely accurate because it encompassed the unreleased Sega Saturn version of the game, which was quite a ways into development before it was moved to the Dreamcast. It also incorporates some of Shenmue II. The actual cost for the first game that was released on the Dreamcast is closer to $20-$23 million. Still not a small chunk of change, especially for the late 1990s, but nowhere near the $46-$70 million that have been widely reported.
The Shenmue saga was designed to be 15-16 acts spread over the course of seven games. The two games that were released were basically the first five acts, well more like four and half since the last part of Shenmue II is not very long and almost entirely story/conversation driven.
Who can forget Peter Moore stabbing fans in the back when he jumped ship to Microsoft from Sega and announced that Shenmue II would be an Xbox exclusive? It was so bad that Gamestop of all places imported European Dreamcast copies (which were subtitled in English) that they bundled with a boot disc so the game could be played on a North American Dreamcast.hmscott likes this. -
Thanks for the deep background, I'd heard a range for the costs, and picked the lower value. Subtracting costs for unfinished unreleased content makes sense, even so it shows that Yu's accustomed to a lot of cash and resources at his command. I am not surprised he jumped at the ability to increase his resources through EGS, that is if he even had a vote in it given that Deep Silver was involved.
I don't think we've heard from Yu yet on the subject of what happened and who made the decisions?

"...Creator Yu Suzuki appeared on stage at the PC Gaming Show briefly to thank fans and introduce the new trailer, but didn't address this new development. " -

Shenmue was originally conceived as Virtua Fighter RPG, but Yu Suzuki had a different vision. Sega was not risk-averse, so they give him the green light to change it to the game as we know it. Suzuki was basically Sega's Shigeru Miyamoto but with even more creative freedom.
From what I understand, Suzuki was approached by other publishers during Shenmue III's development, but they wanted him to alter the game in some fundamental way. Deep Silver must have given him the autonomy he wanted to pursue his vision as he saw fit, with the condition that they have exclusive control over publishing, marketing, and distribution. We need to remember the EGS didn't exist either at the time of the Kickstarter or when Ys Net signed on with Deep Silver. Further, Suzuki has had a good relationship with the fan community. As such, I truly believe he had little to no say in this decision. Hopefully once the game is out, someone will spill the tea as to exactly what went down.hmscott likes this. -

Update: If you made the mistake of signing up for Epic Games Store you should check your inventory to make sure all of your installed games are represented in the list of games you "own". If you ever need to install on another computer or need to reinstall Windows on your current computer you may find you can't install free or purchased games older than 90 days in your visible inventory. Make sure you keep your purchase confirmation emails and for your free videos request confirmation by Epic Customer Service so you have a record of the "purchase" as EGS doesn't currently (or in the past) send out confirmation of your free games purchases.

dl;dr - It appears there are multiple problems with the games list for users on EGS. It only shows 90 days inventory for games purchased, and for many their free "purchases" done get a confirmation so if the listing drops off the inventory they can't re-install. This appears to happen for purchased games too as mentioned by a post I'll include below. Users have tried to reinstall free games, find it's missing, try to get Epic to restore the inventory listing for the game and Epic refuses and there is no evidence of "purchase" so they have to purchase it if they want it back.

Yes, Windows Store works great for me and is a good option if you don't want to use Epic Store.
Another option is just buy a gaming console. This way you do not have to depend on some questionable games store like Epic Store and as an extra benefit you can save a lot on hardware upgrades and do not have to deal with buggy Nvidia drivers ;-) Plus you can still buy used games for cheap if you will buy it on disk. Then just sell it once you're done playing.
Only drawback with consoles is that you will not see Nvidia RTX effects in games, but for people who don't care about those this is not an issue.Last edited: Jul 29, 2019NuclearLizard, JRE84 and hmscott like this. -

Also, forgot to add, the Metro Exodus is not based on Dmitriy's books, it's a separate story. I've read the books and they were better but the game and its story is also good. I recently played it and liked it - it combines stories from some other books not written by Gluhovskiy, the setting is realistic (fun fact: USSR and Russia has kept steam locomotives in reserve for a very long time in case the access to diesel fuel would be lost after nuclear war, there are still few ones left that are being given to museums), the graphics are beautiful (I recommend playing with RTX enabled, it makes big difference) and the story is interesting enough. Only things I did not like are the character animations which are not very well done. Also, make sure to use Russian voiceovers, the English really sounds strange because English actors try too hard to add Russian accent. You can enable English subtitles with Russian voiceovers. -
I would like is the made metro in a movie orvtv series

As long as it's made by the people that are doing Amazon's stuff. Man in the high castle and that.
They turned the nilfgardians in the witcher into literal cock and ballsacks. Won't be trusting them with adaptations again.

I would definitely watch that. The original Metro 2033 wouldn't even cost a lot to make since most of the stuff happens inside the tunnels, it would be easy to rent some abandoned station and parts of unused tunnel in some former USSR republic or some country where USSR built a metro, or even ask Elon Musk to rent his tunnel ;-)
Russia or Ukraine could make it for very cheap but they're too busy with other stuff and in Russia absolutely no one is interested in making good movies because the government just gives away large amount of money to filmmakers even if their movie will turn to be a total **** and will not bring any profit (this is a sad fact and is often expressed in parody videos of famous Russian YT movie critic, BadComedian).hmscott and NuclearLizard like this. -
There was a plan for a while to film a Metro 2033 movie in DC. The idea was scrapped, much to the delight of the author, who thought an Americanized Metro adaptation taking place in DC wouldn't have worked out well. After the movie plans fell through, the film rights reverted to him. Who knows, maybe he'll secure a more faithful film deal someday.

I didn't know that. Maybe it's a good thing that it wasn't made by that movie company, some adaptations can be terrible. I hope he will finally find the right people for it, hopefully with actors who can speak Russian without accent (it would be very immersion breaking to me to hear typical "heavy Russian accent" emulated by people who don't speak it), you can find plenty of native Russian speakers even here in US.

I don't get the hate for Epic.
Epic charge the developer 12%, Steam and Microsoft are gouging the developer for 30%.
It's really a no brainer I wouldn't use them either.
Same thing happened recently with another game Ooblets, developer signed an exclusive deal with Epic and suddenly gets bombarded with hate mail. -
I don't really hate epic per se, it's just got no good features and it's mired in **** ups.
Also I haven't really looked into the ooblets thing but from what I know in passing is they went about it like assholes.
Supposedly instead of going "we are going epic because of x y and z."
They went on a tirade about how gamers are toxic and entitled man children etc.

That actually doesn't sound too far off the mark; there's sadly a ton of toxicity in gamer culture. Though it's obviously not a great PR move for them to come out and say.
Unrelated: Metro Exodus DLC "The Two Colones" should be arriving shortly. Still no release date other than "summer," but GeForce Drivers 431.60 are out and optimized for it.NuclearLizard likes this.
