Does anyone play W3 on a 7970M? Can you share ingame settings, performance, temps?

I launched TW3 - and haven't managed to get out of Kaer Morhen. It has crashed on me five times...

Hey guys.
I've just installed the witcher 3 on my pc and damn this is a demanding game! I have an alienware 18 with 780m sli. With everything on ultra i seem to be averaging 35fps. Turning down to high seems to get around 38 and medium is low 40's. Only on low settings do i get the magic 60fps. What sort of fps is everyone else getting and what would you consider playable? It also seems to stutter a bit on any setting. -
Personally SLI microstutter bothers me anytime I dip below 50 FPS. You may have to compromise with Low-Medium.
-
Maybe it will play better on ps4?
-
That remains to be seen

A few more things I've experienced with this game:
- Adjust the gamma. Default settings are rather bright/over-exposed.
- Use full-screen mode, not borderless windowed. The latter mode is a lot more unstable and the game has crashed several times over the past hour that I've played it.
- Nvidia's 352.86 Game Ready driver breaks X-Plane 10 - see here. Happened to me too, so I can confirm.
- Strongly advised to use some sort of AO, or else the game looks terrible.
- Running Fraps with Witcher 3 (or come to that, even GTA V) makes the game run slower. Or maybe it's a placebo effect that makes the game feel smoother without being told at exactly which frame rate is is running at.

1. Spend big money on kick-butt PC to insure that it would run latest and greatest games at nice settings.
2. Wait for Ubisoft/CDPR to release their games.
3. See how badly they run you that kick-butt hardware.
4. Silently weep while buying PS4.
5. ???
6. Profit.
I wasn't saying 960 is faster than 970. No way I would say that, how could you even think I would make such a ridiculous statement.
It's just that 970 would benefit from having full 4GB way more than 960. Oh well, that's nGreedia for you (and also lack of any serious competitorship). -
-
LOL dawg I feel ya be cool
Good for you, thanks for contributing to this threadTomJGX, Ionising_Radiation and killkenny1 like this. -
Raw mouse input is under Video settings and called Hardware cursor.
For those of you with stutter try it out: -
So, uh, can anyone explain to me what this new obsession is with hair in games these days? Just something new developers are drooling over?
Not a fan of it at all. Kills performance by a good 30%. Those cut scenes in the game, they intentionally zoom in on Geralt to checkout his hair...as if he's Brad Pitt in a movie or something, lol.
FPS drops dramatically.

Goddamn TressFX. It's all Lara Croft's fault.

Hair < bewbs (though she had a nice refined set
).
-
When you go to get information about BuckThorn from that woman, you walk in and her ass is in your face, lol.
Dat ass tho... FPS drops.
Not really.
-
Played just a bit until I reached the 1st town last night.
(EDIT: On my desktop) Started the game at Ultra @1200P with Hair FX, just some minor stuttering. Lowered everything down to High. Honestly can't tell the difference between High settings and Ultra settings, but no more stuttering. The fans on my GPU appear to go from blazing loud to silent with no real rhyme or reason.
Had an issue after the 1st tutorial section where the game didn't crash, but went to desktop and I couldn't get the game back.
Yup, the cutscenes get annoying when your eyes are used to higher FPS and going between the two is noticeable.
Looking forward to playing more tonight. -
Finally recorded some gameplay! It's uploading now.
Didn't play the first Witcher, but played the second one for a little while. Gotta say, this series is good. Love it so far. -
Graphics and Postprocessing set to High, no Hairworks, no AA
Locked 60fps @ 1080p so far. I'm supremely satisfied with that.
Also turned off Chromatic and Vignette. -
Ok so now is the moment you have all been waiting for, how does this game run on a Titan X? It's decent on ultra, if I lower the shadows to high and the grass desnity to high I pretty much get a constant 60fps. Not bad, I have only been able to play about 30 minutes last night.

Ionising_Radiation ?v = ve*ln(m0/m1)
Use full-screen mode, not borderless windowed. I got this issue seven times and had several crashes with borderless windowed mode until I changed to full screen. No more crashes, profit.
Gah, it's taking all my willpower not to launch the game and finish my assignment first... -
Could have sworn I was in fullscreen mode but I'll double check when I get home. Thank you for the tip. And I hear ya, my gym routine usually takes about 2 hours our so, but last night I got it done 3o minutes faster
. Good thing it's a holiday this weekend here in the States.

Can your few thousand dollar laptop do ultra?
-
Well my FPS went betwern 40 and 80fps on the first tutorial sections. But the microstutter or whatever might be, makes it really uncomfortable. I will try High settings later today, or at the very least remove the hairFX thing.
I was a tad disappointed the opening cinematic was stuttery. -
Not to my satisfaction. I won't lie though I have extremely sharp senses when it comes to visuals. When I say 60fps I don't just want the counter to say 60. I want it to feel like 60.
-
-
There's no doubt it can. 980M SLI at stock is faster than the Titan X.TomJGX and Mr Najsman like this.

Just uploaded my video. Still processing, though.
-
Ultimately to answer your question though yes it can run it at ultra and 99 percent of people if they were in my shoes would not lower any settings

why does this game run so bad on kepler?it runs better on fermi than on kepler cards from what i saw
-
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Because nVidia needs you to buy a new video card. That or CDPR did a piss poor job optimizing the game. -
dumitrumitu24 Notebook Evangelist
yeah but its really a huge gap.I saw 660gtx doing on avarage 13fps while 270x 24fps but there are comparable cards especially in gameworks title which should run at least similar. They wont get my money. If i buy i will buy a desktop ati 3xxx series gpu
-
Ionising_Radiation ?v = ve*ln(m0/m1)
13 FPS with a GTX 660? My 860M is slightly weaker than that and I can get 35-40 FPS with a mixture of medium to high settings... -
I am curious if a single 980m runs the game in ultra (the default ultra settings in game) above 30 fps on average?
-
Yes. Without recording it's pretty much always above 40 FPS.
-
Even with Hairworks on?
-
Probably the BGA turd CPU isn't helping much.. Now if he had a 4940MX @ 4.2GHz constant, ultra would work
They've really made the game to run horribly on keppler cards.. No excuse for NVIDIA since those cards have similar power yet are running like crap... Hopefully next driver improves this... -
I shut off that overclock because I don't want to deal with liquid ultra anymore. I'm running my CPU with just a simple -85mv undervolt so it runs between 3.5 and 3.8 depending on the load.
That said, Titan X is a desktop chip, hence no BGA and likely a decent K series chip so the point is moot
-
Nah I'm running through the graphics amp for now, going to give it a go on my 780ti sli desktop this weekend
-
Except of course that would be at 1440p on my u2713 so I don't expect fantastic results
-
Oh man, a Titan X in a graphics amp? Isn't that a waste?
Btw Kepler is just plain bad for this game... I wouldn't expect much from your 780 Ti SLI system... -
Its not bad at all it runs really fantastic tbh, I'm extremely happy with it and it gets 14.5k firestrike
-
So you tried TW3 on it? Because Kepler cards including the 780 Ti took a crazy beat down.
-
No sorry I mean the titan x with the ga gets that, I will report back once I try with the TIs
-
All of the Kepler GPUs are getting clobbered by this game. Titan "classic" is getting about 30 frames at 1920x1080 on ultra settings and no hair. Supposedly it's because Maxwell is much superior to Kepler for tessellation. Supposedly it's because Nvidia is optimizing their game-ready drivers only for Maxwell. Lots of allegations but no answers.
-
That's BS. Even AMD is laying the smack down on Kepler and the red team has even weaker tessellation performance.
-
Here's the game with in-game AA disabled and using the GPU FXAA. I also limited the in-game FPS to 30 from unlimited. minor variance in temps - saw a max of 73 deg C.
Looks the same to me or just a little more jaggy actually. i don't think the GPU FXAA is doing anything. -
With all of the performance issues that others seem to be having I feel like I should be grateful for the FPS I am getting lol
-
FXAA isn't captured in screenshots, so in this case there's absolutely no AA going on, hence jaggies galore
