By best, I define different for single player and multiplayer (by number of hours probably):
Multiplayer:
FPS - Descent 2
RTS - Starcraft / C&C Generals + Zero Hour
MMOFPS - Battlefield 2
RPG - Diablo 2
Sim - Jane's Longbow 2
Single Player:
FPS - Descent 2
RTS - Starcraft / C&C Generals + Zero Hour
RPG - Oblivion
Sim - Falcon 4 -
Legend of Zelda
-
Yes!
In fact, I was just thinking the other day of seeing if D3 will load up on one of my Vista machines. Or even one of the Freespace games.
+1 rep for you for refreshing my memory of these classics! -
there are too many "best games" most of them in my opinion are rts though.
-
Final Fantasy 7 by far one of my most favorite games
I loved Earthworm Jim (Sega Genesis babyy woo)
and also if anyone has ever heard of this game
Dark Forces
OH MAN
i played that game so much as a kid =]
my favorite shooting game is probably Americas Army
I enjoyed countless hours playing with friends Legit and Hacking =]
Hacking was always funnier though (Oh look his name is colored!!) -
Best Game : Gears of War (Xbox 360)
Worst Game : Gears of War for Windows (Asus G1S) -
lol @ Icaru
idk mines split between Diablo 2, Half-Life 2, and Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure/Cobi's Journey -
Way too few Half Life 2 posts.
-
Shinobi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it was the game on the old Sega Mega Drive....i was 5 at the time and my uncle who was 14 had it, it was the game that got me hooked on to video games and was the first game i played in my life -
Shining forces ii ftw ive played it through a ridiculous number of times best rpg ever... Then again i haven played a new pc game for a while... But that will all change when the new lappy comes in!
-
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
Xwing vs tie-fighter was probably the game I have had the most fun with. Now thats a game that deserves a modern hardware remake.
-
Yeah, I don't know how many hours I "wasted" with Descent 2. Playing the maps over and over was actually fun. Online was even better. Then I got my Monster 3D card and played the game over again a couple more times and online was that much better. Also built tons of maps. They had a very easy to use editor. A little quirky and not super powerful, but it was fun nevertheless.
I loved Freespace and Freespace 2. Both best space combat games ever, even better than Tie Fighter.
Wish there was another space based game as fun as those released recently. -

Out of its mind. -
Metroid (nes)
-
Rush 2049
Best arcade racing on N64 -
Star Wars galaxies without a doubt. Only in its early years before the combat upgrade tho.
-
I totally forgot about that D2. I even went out and bought a joystick for this game. It came on 3 floppy disks if I remember correctly. Played the hell out of this game too but it didn't have the same replayability as Diablo 2.
Oh btw, in a couple years if this poll comes up I would say Oblivion would probably be in the running, highly addictive game. -

Mmm....Warcraft 3, CS: Source, Team Fortress 2 & Call of Duty 4.
-
you play on northrend? If so, do you know dota-league? Can only recommend it!
-
Here is the list my fav Games
(Best Games)
1. HomeWorld 2
2. Command and Conquer Tiberium Wars
3. COD4
5. Age of Empire - Legends
6. EVE Online -
For me it's a tossup between C&C Red Alert 2 and NFS: Hot Pursuit 2. I spent many hours of my early life playing these two to death.
-
I must give props to other games :
-X-Com UFO Defense
-One Must Fall
-Indiana Jone and the Last Crusade
-Sea Rogue
The are all OLD game that i played on my first PC , but they still kept me up all night ! -
I never understood Final Fantasy. Walk around, step into a space and then you're trading punches with some wonky creature, or more like playing rock-scissors-paper.
-
Shadowfate Wala pa rin ako maisip e.
Maybe RPG style of games just isn't your style. FF is one of the best games people have posted here -
i really find it too hard to name the best game. i remember spending hours collecting all the masks in LOZ majoras mask. i remember playing goldeneye with people when i was real little. and i remember those pro-wrestling games, they rocked too. and all the mario games (including mario party 1). star ocean was a tight game (though i could never beat it), and me and my friend spent many, many hours playing dark cloud 2 (great game in my opinion). even sonic was awesome, and i can't forget vectorman for sega genesis. and what about mortal kombat and street fighter. i know there has to be people out there who spent countless hours playing those games. what about duke nukem 3d, that game was my favorite PC game for a long while (granted i was like 9 or somtehing when it came out). gta3 was very fun. and the final fantasy series has some great games too.
it's really too difficult to say what is the best game. but, i gotta stick with my toejam and earl: panic on funkotron. that game was just tight. -
I love RPG's, some of them are among my favorite games.
But Final Fantasy 7 sucked on so many levels which owed nothing to being an (alleged) RPG. And I say alleged, because how much roleplaying was there really in it? How much choice? How much influence did you, the player have?
But no, it sucked because of its ridiculously bad combat system, its looooooong draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut combat animations, its annoying random encounters, its general annoyance-based dialogue (it isn't there to be read, it's there to break the flow and tear the player out of the game and force them to mash buttons to get the ugly blue text bubbles to go away)
And the story was, sorry to say it, nothing special. Perhaps it'd have an impact on you if you were a 13-year old emo chick who'd never read books/watched movies with plots more interesting than your average Marvel comic.
To the rest of us (and yes, I am aware I'm in a minority here), it was so inconsistent I just couldn't take it seriously. When whatshername died, I felt like crying. Not because it was sad, but because it managed to break every single rule the game's universe had set up. It is impossible to take a story seriously that isn't internally consistent. -
Hands down best PC Games ever:
-Planescape:Torment
-Baldurs Gate 2
-Aliens VS Predator 2
-Counterstrike Source
-Morrowind
-Severance: Blade of Darkness -

1. C&C Red Alert and all its user mods
2. Sid Meier's Alpha Centuari and its add on Alien Crossfire (had 3 copies of the add on at one time and lost them. they now go for over $100 on ebay
)
3. Eve Online -
who let you in?
DotA is horrible...
Tank wars mini > DotA -
Fallout 2
-
Fallout 2
-
If I think about it real hard, must be the original Half Life.
Was the best game I`ve played, it was such a novelty to play a game in which the story was long, catchy and sci-fi like.Also...was one of the best multiplayers at its time...
Of course Half Life 2 and the episodes are in the same league... -
I'm playing through Deus Ex again, and it still hasn't lost its appeal.
-
Super Mario Land
Never played a game with that much replay value -
.... oh man... COUNTERSTRIKE.. NOT SOURCE... but 1.3/1.5/1.6.... oh man, CAL... wow.. addiction central rite there.... now its CoD4 is pretty good...
-
maybe this are not technically perfect or cutting edge graphics but this are my pics of best(s) game ever played cause of the furious action and insane addiction that leads to really fun times:
>diablo2
>cstrike
>dota
special mention:
>any zelda game -
MechWarrior 2 with a Sidewinder 3D Pro joystick...
Perfect blend of peripheral and game...
(Master of Orion, I'76, and Wing Commander: Prophecy get honorable mention from me) -
MechWarrior 2 ... ****! How'd I forget that!?!
Thanks, +1 rep inbound.
Yes, absolutely awesome.
Man I miss the 1990's! LOL. -
Another one for Deus Ex. That game was amazing! The PERFECT mix of RPG and FPS, nothing else comes close. I never really got a chance to play Deus Ex 2 though, didn't play console FPS's, still don't, and the game ran poorly on every PC I installed it on.
I really hope Deus Ex 3 keeps the good o'l RPG/FPS style the first one had, but use a well done engine like Crytek 2. Then mabe I'll have a new favorite game of all time! -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Star Wars (1983)
I must have pumped a mint in quarters into this thing at my local 7-11 back in the day. What I spent in quarters I could probably have bought the whole frickin stand up unit.
There's a neat serires of features on this and all the Star Wars games on Gametrailers right now.

Street Fighter 2 (SNES)
Madden
Counter-Strike PC
Day of the Tentacle PC -
I have to say the best game I have ever played is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. It blew my mind. The game play was awesome, and I was on the edge of my seat till the end.
Coming in a close second is rome total war. Really great game. -
