i couldn't update my post yesterday.
I forgot to mention there were 2 P870DM users trying the same thing. i call them A and B for easy reference here.
The guy in link (A) succeeded with custom 4pin, was able to get 3dmark X8100.
The guy (B) whose 870 shortcircuit, was because he tested out with the default 4pin.
Guy A is currently MIA, cannot confirm if he was successful, the picture only shows clevo 1070 but doesnt show any proof that it is P870DM

Any luck with flashing different vBios ? I'm just waiting to hear something positive so i can place order on gtx1060.

Would this custom, standard format, MXM 1070N work in the MSI GT72? I see something about an extra power connector? Is this something that's difficult to solve?
The extra height probably won't be a big problem, because there's quite a bit of space between the GPU and the lid.
Really curious to wether this is actually physically possible... The trade in program was officially announced... and it's still U.S. only
-
Gecube said their design probably won't involve power connection. So gecube is my last hope. I tried googling about power connector, seems like no other ways...USB is only 5V, 1A, not enough. No idea if you can convert other connectors into power supplyinvertedsilence likes this.

Can't a wire be routed from the power adapter's connection to the MB to the card?
-
It can be done but need significant effort & dremel work, the AW17 was modded for Clevo GTX980 180W MXM with an extra power cable from the Motherboard - the Fan power cabling by splicing it & an extra fan too from the other Fan power port (Check it out on the prev page). But who is willing to put the effort ? Not to forget the exorbitant extorting prices of the MXM cards, I see all the enthusiasts have jumped to Pascal chipsets, IF there's a really skilled person to do the mod, We would have already seen that, Until now one user modded the AW17 to run the non standard MXM MSI 1070N (No extra power card) But maybe we might see, hope so, Since the MXM Pascal chipsets are not that popular in the market.
Forget the MSI/Clevo proprietary solutions for the MXM interface..but why the Zotac is being retarded here, If they can sell those MXM3.0b 1070s they would outsell the GTX 1070 Magnus box. Period. This feels like the work from the Invisible force of the corrupted conglomerates at it's finest.
I lost hope with upgradeable laptops or so called "MXM" prowess touting/advertising 2016 hardware - Feels like click bait. Once Volta drops we might see resurgence from the community.Last edited: Dec 5, 2016TomJGX, invertedsilence, Solo wing and 4 others like this. -
Invisible force in Nvidia not being careless enough to allow them to sell the cards separately and than face outrage by notebook manufacturers who need to sell their shiny new Pascal notebooks.
On the other hand, it seems questionable how many people would go through such an upgrade, but given that some manufacturers were selling their laptops as "upgradeable", I'd presume the numbers are not insignificant.Last edited: Dec 6, 2016 -
Exactly. Firstly - the whole move was dictated by nGREEDIA and I'm still not certain how Zotac got away with such design. Secondly - you can go and look in msi's section how much people were after the "promised" upgrades (the thread is pinned for convenience).
-
It doesn't say much for Zotac either that they're not prepared to see parts for 'replacement'.

great news
but I don't know what to do...upgrade my machine if it can take the gtx1070..?
or buy the clevo p870dm3 with 1070 sli or single 1080??
any thoughts guys??
helppppppppp -
i would say always go for new ones. msi 1070 is not cheap btw.
-
If you have the money... Sell what you have and buy P870DM3 with single or fully 1080 package. I wouldn't go the 1070 Sli route for P870DM3
-
how much you think I can get for my system?
-
depends where and how u sell it. here in the nbr marketplace ull prolly sell it fast but at a lower price cuz users know what the hardware is actually worth. best to offer it on ebay with worldwide shipping and max auction length

Haven't checked in this thread in a while, but just to double check, LVDS has been ruled out of both pascal and polaris right?

Eh guys question.... Is it ok now to get the tornado F5 from eurocom? I've seen that the gpu can be upgraded now to GTX 1080 plus a 4k screen. This barebone unit surpasses the GT63 and GT73 now.. I am very tempted to get one now.

If you want 15 inches laptop. Run and buy. Socket hardware all the way... Talk With @Diversion and @Talon . They know a lot about this little socket monster

I do wonder however if Clevo will change the MXM board shape again next time. I will give them benefit of the doubt and wait and see before getting a Clevo. If they keep the strange new shapes for the next gen...why not.
For now I do not trust them whatsoever to do so. Looks interesting it seems the F5 is using a MSI based 1070M card. -
well maybe it'll be somewhat a standard once it settles down.
theres also this, @Q937 http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...th-skylake-x-hedt.798348/page-7#post-10409066
eurocom rep stated they are looking to have one of laptop including skylakeX, although not sure how far we can take their words as their model comes from clevos' anyway. -
I'd love to see that happen, but I'll believe it when I see it.
-
Yeah @Talon is my friend since the MSI GT60(Ivy bridge) era. I've read in the early pages of this thread that a GTX 1080 is not possible but now it is. And I've also seen Talons post that he returned his eurocom unit because of the used Videocard that has put into his unit and had his item refund to buy the same unit in another merchant. But is it okay now with this issue?
-
Hey bud just to keep it honest I ended up working out a deal with Eurocom for the shipment and was able to keep my Tornado F5 and get the 1070 replaced.
The 1080 is now available because they're using a custom 150w TDP card instead of the full TDP card. So it won't need the external power source.jaybee83, omega939, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -

1080 in 1070 msi form? Pics?
Sent from my SM-A500FU using Tapatalk -
I believe the GT83 variant has this form factor.
-
I'm still a bit curious how a cut down TDP version of the card will actually perform in relation to the 1070. Will the near $700 price premium really be worth it? For me it just isn't, but I have a desktop with a 1080 for home use. If it were my main rig and was planning to connect to an external when at home then I might consider it if the performance is there. Even a 1070 is almost too much for me in my 1080p 60hz situation but the price difference was less than $100 from the 1060 so the choice was simple. According to an email exchange with Eurocom the other day the 120hz display should be around sometime in January and that he would get back to me with details when and if it's actually available.

I would like to weigh in, the hardmod is not always needed, however - when it is, the originally hard modded cards your seeing with the single green wire are the QS samples. These are the release candidates for the viable product, they come from the factory with large orders of laptops and cards in a bundle free at no extra charge. They're not supposed to be sold, hence the ES/QS versions, of like CPU's and such too.
Anyways these are not ES versions which are preliminary models, QS is essentially identical to the normal versions. There are also not many QS to go around, and your better off with a QS card then a actual hard modded card if you do need the wire to bypass the EC check, because they were done very carefully at factory to be test cards to show off the quality of the final product. Kind of like getting a binned version of a test product. -

Anyways the 1080N are coming next month - hopefully. Expect there to be some delay in showing them, until many tests are completed.
-
That's good to hear that this barebone can be upgraded to a 1080 then. I want to see the real pics too... I think I'll order soon with eurocom then when they release the 1080 plus the 120 hertz screen by next year then
-
Is it silly of me to hope that whatever comes with Volta or after Volta will return to the smaller MXM factor? I mean, each generation requires less and less power, right? So, theoretically, it should mean there is not gonna be a need for that 2nd power connector the current pascal notebook cards have?
-
Nvidia threw out the standard after halfway through the Maxwell lifecycle, it's a crapshoot from here on out.
-
That's the non-SLI variant found in the GT73.

Me not like. This is kinda off topic IMHO. Check the thread title guys
MXM 3.0B the "B" doesn't stand for bloated...
On topic Iam currently maneuvering into position to do the following in the new year...
Take this + this + 1060 or RX E9550 + display OC (many have achieved 120hz with M15x). All wired on internally.
Once again Nvidia and OEMs FAIL. Thank god I have a simple laptop with full DP out direct and unfiltered from the GPU and no Igpu. It may be old but to hell with modern craptops.Last edited: Dec 15, 2016 -

What is the chance of getting the ZBOX EN1070 Card working inside the AW17 R5 120hz (eDP)???
I could buy it, but if it does not work I would not keep the ZBOX, any place where I can buy it and accept returns?
Thanks!smoking2k likes this. -
thats indeed the big question! i would love to see the Zotac ZBox 1070 card installed into ANY machine whatsoever, just as a proof of concept and to motivate more users to get themselves a ZBox
As for returns, Amazon has been known to be quite return-friendly
