The optimus penalty is very minor, especially when targetting around 60 fps.
Since the laptop uses optimus there is no need for eDP. If you really want eDP, the eDP port does work, but there are no compatible cables. You'd need to rewire cables meant for other systems. There's also no real benefit to getting eDP running unless you also mod the board to use dGPU eDP for high res screen support, which requires moving 10 caps, 3 jumpers, making backlight control work (mxm backlight control only has the brightness level signal, not backlight enable), and crossflashing the bios to a P370EM3 (don't flash the EC section!). And then 4 channel eDP cables are all too short, so you need to splice and extend them.

so.... i got the black dell 1070m.
flashed it to msi and still am lost as to what to add to the inf files to get the nvidia driver working.
uaing p377sm-a screen can be over clocked to 120hz. so not sure why i am not getting output
from the internal screen.
could someone pm me and walk me through this?Last edited: Dec 27, 2019 -
As for driver mods I just take the closest desktop ID and mod it to whatever I am installing a driver for. In your case I would modify nvdispi.inf to contain the device ID for the notebook 1070 instead of the desktop 1070. By modding the desktop mvdispi.inf file you don't have to worry about subsystem ID.
Isn't the sm-a series LVDS only? That will never work with a 1070.M18x-oldie likes this. -

It works I just get Microsoft basic display.even after adding the hardware id with the lite mod drivers.
I used the tool in the lite drivers found here on the forums to insert the hardware I'd for my card. Still reverts to basic display adapter after the driver install.
Thanks in advance for the help. -

Hi, post GPU-Z screenshot
edit : if he have the 120Hz "3D" display, it's already using eDP, I don't think a 4 lane LVDS could ouput 1080p at 120Hz without issueLast edited: Dec 27, 2019 -

that was taken before the driver installed.
now that the driver is installed the card shows up in device manager. Windows however stops the card from working and doesn't say why reverts back to basic display. I've checked the logs and nothing says it shouldn't be working.
but if someone could mod an inf file for me i'll send a donation their way.
if anyone has this card what vbios was flashed on it to get it to properly work, right now it has the latest msi vbios.
not using the 3d panel.
i can post the exact model with HW64 when i get home.sicily428 likes this. -

Replace this line in nvcvi.inf
By this line
DDU every nvidia drivers and install them again with the modded inf file
If your card display something on your internal display it's only because you have an eDP display or optimus running or very unlikely you forgot to remove one of your old GPU (that support LVDS), except in your case P377SM-A doesn't support optimus and I don't think your forgot to remove your old GPU
-
dellienware owner Notebook Evangelist
Below that line or replace that line?
And what about vbios, am I good to go with what's installed? -
TheQuentincc Notebook Evangelist
Replace it to avoid conflict, your vbios is one of the latest 1070 MSI mobile vbios, might not be a good choice because it's very recent (BIOS Build date : 2019-06-10) and might run into issue with old hardware as yours, however I'm not a clevo specialist at all to tell you what vbios should be working in your laptop.

Kinda curious if a 1060 mxm would work in an m6700 LVDS?
-
1060 will work with LVDS so theoretical it should work.

yeah was just wondering bc this auction: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nvidia-GeF...487546&hash=item2f28e3bddc:g:0fcAAOSwckVcJc~I
says it will work w a gt72 and I think that's what my 980m came from. No intention of actually doing it though, the card is more than I paid for my whole m6700 w a 980m lol thx -
TheQuentincc Notebook Evangelist
The only pascal card that work in the M6700 are the Quadro P3000, the P4000 and the P5000.
And also pascal card can't output LVDS (analog) signal by themself, they need optimus or a direct eDP (numeric) lcd to output video -
I've noticed in my many teardowns of this that it does have the edp connector on the board so I'm guessing it's just a matter of getting an edp screen then? Or is it possible to just use the LVDS with optimus enabled? Seems pretty easy in that case apart from maybe heatsink modding.
-
TheQuentincc Notebook Evangelist
You are stuck with quadro, but yeah optimus needed for LVDS scren and optimus disabled (you can't activate it) with eDP screen, no heatsink mod needed on the M6700
-
Mastermind5200 Notebook Virtuoso
Nope, M6700 doesn't work with Pascal properly due to BIOS issues. a WX7100 should in theory, work fine with a eDP screen (non Enduro, it isnt supported on the M6700)
-
TheQuentincc Notebook Evangelist
M6700 work with quadro pascal card, I got a P4000 in mine, some other user got a P5000 in their, the only card not tested on the M6700 is the P3000 but since it's vbios is very similar to the P5000 and the fact it work on a M6800 (same bios issues) made me think it should work too on the M6700
I think normal pascal GPU should work in the M6700 too, if I'm running a "not working on M6700" P4000 vbios on my P4000, the M6700 display nothing before windows (and the nvidia driver preinstalled) initialize the card (UEFI boot only), after the card was initialized, it works as nothing wrong

"...Dell says having moved away from the MXM format they didn't have any limitations which is a nice joke since Dell Precision systems max out at P4200 DGFF."
Your statement is not correct.
Yes, the Dell Precision P5200 DGFF exists and here is an eBay link:

1300 for what essentially is a slower 1080, LOL
This is why I escaped to desktop when I saw the price for MXM 1060 was the same as desktop 1070 and Vega 56 with 25% VAT.
BGA crap has also skyrocket in price because of nVidia and Intel dominance they can just charge whatever they want for their parts.
Hopefully this changes this year.

Also we know the DGFF in Area 51M is prone to failure. It's not MXM at all, it's a complete proprietary module. Z Book, MSI GT75 BGA even the mutated Zotac all use MXM at the very least. This won't work with any machine except Dell and that too the BIOS must allow all kinds of checks along with EC, just look that GPU board has I/O, on top it's not going to fit in Area 51M, the dimensions are entirely different. MXM 1070 Dell (1070 Core on a Quadro board with removed memory iirc) which is the last normal GPU is at $500+ more than a damn 2060 Super / 2070 itself is too much. Here, $1000+ for a 2080 Kit, almost a 2080Ti price.
I really wonder who is going to buy such overpriced kits. This DGFF is a dead weight in secondary market as well just like those MSI 1080 mutations, Clevo cards also started using some custom Pin on the GPUs causing a havok again to upgrade. Whereas a 780M has SLI, 980M also has SLI and works with many machines. A 1070N MSI works in Clevo and Alienware with dremel modding. Above 1070 Dell works in Clevo, Precision, HP and Alienware maybe in MSI too ?
A simple mxm3.0b format with the universal compatibility and SLI would have been a boon to many people and even these OEMs (Dell and MSI build them as we know) they could sell them a lot. Unless and until people stop buying those overpriced BGA laptops and mutated MXM laptops without any standards it's not going to change.
Honestly I feel sorry for the DGFF owners it's unreliable, too expensive which is even more than MXM which has been overpriced always.Last edited: Jan 5, 2020M18x-oldie, Papusan and SMGJohn like this. -

DGFF isn't the issue, the reason the GPU's where failing was due to the VRM setup and the phases sourced, the issues have been mostly fixed, however there are currently 3 different DGFF form factors atm

These Chinese eBayers are doing highway robberies. 1300 For an old and non-standard shape GPU is too much. The thing has been on ebay for almost a year. I was looking for an hp quadro P4200 mxm so I can flash its vbios with a Dell and use it on the m17x r4. After feasibility research, I discovered that it did not support the vbios flash because HP designed It without an EEPROM. The same hp quadro P4200s mxm have since dropped the price from $8xx to $5xx after more than a year of listing. I wish Dell had not purchased Alienware. My new plan is to purchase a 2060 thunderbolt-3 laptop and eGPU system to be connected to an external monitor. The eGPU will be loaded with a desktop quadro or rad pro.
Yep, I noticed also that the Quadro Px200 mxm, Quadro RTX mxm, and the GeForce RTX mxm have different form factors if someone pays attention! What a f@ck from Dell! -

Why would you buy a P4200 when you can just get a 1070

I assume he wants the Quadro drivers with the Quadro features.
Gotta love how nVidia crippled workstation features on their gaming cards.
AMD does it too with OpenGL which kind of sucks even more.

For running apps such as ANSYS, Solidworks, and other CFD and FEA programs. A 1070 is depressing when running these apps and causes the computer to crash for certain futures.
Take a look at this comparison (P4000 MXM vs. GTX 1070 MXM) for example:
-
TheQuentincc Notebook Evangelist
you can get at a relatively good price a P4000, I got mine (HP bandred but with eeprom soldered on it, like the 1070, I flashed a Dell vbios without issues) for 300 eur (which is like 330 usd), I think the quadro P4200 is not a great choice, memory bandwidth is way too slow for this fast card.
For sure the P4200 have more core and boost higher, that makes it a lot faster than the P4000, however the P4000 is runs very cool (about 65~70w in game) -
Mastermind5200 Notebook Virtuoso
P4000 is between a 1060/1070. P4200 is between 1070/1080 (in theory)

I was also thinking about getting an HP P4000 mxm since I can't find a Dell quadro. How do you flash the Dell vbios?

So...running Optimus will get the black pcb 1070 to work on a lvds system?
Does anyone have a vbios and inf file for this card? Installed in a clevo p377sm-a, just trying to get the driver installed and recognised by device manager.
Link to where I purchased the card. https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Dell-H...248714?hash=item2abc16f98a:g:mPQAAOSwkR5c64Og
It's a dell card so do I need to flash it with a msi bios?Last edited: Jan 7, 2020 -
You have to flash it with the clevo's 1070 vbios since you said that you installed it in a clevo. You should get more information if you go to clevo forums/discussions.
-
I advise not to flash Clevo vbios on the "ebay" black pcb 1070 as the TDP is much lower than the one of the Clevo...
Just use the inf mod driver and it will work like a charm.M18x-oldie and uugui shi like this. -
It's HP.
The HP's Px00 (P5000, P4000, ...) have a vbios soldered on the gpu.
Only the HP's PX200 (P5200, P4200, ...) dont' have a vbios soldered on the gpu.
This time, HP went back to soldering a vbios on the gpu with the quadro RTX. -

Not laptop. Itx motherboard with MXM slot.
It has 3 displayoutputs directley from MXM (DP_A, B, C) and no one from iGPU. It works well with Firepro m6100, but RX480 doesnt give any picture.
Manufacture of motherboard said that it may be caused by vbios issue. -

Yes this could be the problem, the vbios may be incompatible with the system. As far as I’m aware some of these rx 480 are lvds only which means you can’t utilise them on DisplayPort. -
I tryed to connect to MoBo using remote desktop. System recognize card without any issues. I can even run games using rdp! But is doesnt recognize any connected monidor or display.
The hopeful of keeping MXM 3.0b alive thread!
