How good is the new X3000. Is mobile gaming possible for every notebook now? That would be great.

How far behind does the Nvidia 7600 fall behind Ati's x1600?

Hi guys, I would like 2 ask if Omega drivers r safe 2 use, if it would burn and overheat my Graphics card and my notebook. (I only have 1 fan). Also, wat is the exact difference between Omega and ATI's official drivers. R the Omegas juz more tweaked and overclocked?
Thanks in advance, Daniel -
Nvidia Geforce GO 7600 is 99.39% of the ATI X1600 based on raw performance. But in gaming, the Geforce 7600 is 94.55% of the ATI X1600. Hope this help!

The Omega drivers will not do anything to cause your notebook to overheat, they are safe to use. The drivers have various small tweaks. -

Hi,
I need som information and I hope you can help me with this one. I'm going to buy a laptop and my bugets is about $2000 and the best available(?) graphics card within that budget is the ATI X1600 (256 MB).
What kind of performance will I get with a ASUS A6Ja-Q028P (X1600 @ 256 MB)?
Specifications:
Intel Centrino Duo Processor T2400 @ 1.83GHz
Mobile Intel 945 PM Express Chipset
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 @ 256MB
1024MB SO-DIMM DDR II @ 533MHz
HDD: 100GB HDD
Should I go for it or is there anything better within my budget?
Thanks in advance for any help I can get

Hey 8bit,
Thats a great notebook! Very good value. But I would go for 2 GB of DDR2 and for a 7200 rpm if you have the budget for it. The ASUS is a very good notebook by the way, superb quality.

Hitman,
$2000 is my limit but I can always upgrade later on.
Thanks for the input

1GB should be sufficent to hold you over until you can upgrade to 2GB. That is a very good configuration.
-
Ok, thanks!
What about this Dell Inspiron 9400?
Intel Core Duo T2300E (1.66 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB)
2048MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM
256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS
60GB (5,400 rpm) SATA -

You should complete the FAQ in the What Should I Buy forum.

This is my first post so hello everyone. Thank you for this great list, it helped me alot in choosing the right laptop for me. There is one question though I would like answered and I'm pretty sure someone should already have noticed about the final list, but I'm so sorry I'm too lazy to go over those 40 something pages. The high-end cards that were left in black are supposably better than the performance cards in red but how come in the final list, the x1600 goes after the Go 6800. Does this mean it has better graphics AND has the performance description as in using less battery and stuff? I already bought my notebook and is already too late to chance my mind but I was just curious. Thanks
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
The Go6800 is classified as a 'high-end' card, yes, but that doesn't mean it cannot be outperformed by a newer, mid-range card (a fast one at that). The Radeon X1600, being based on a newer architecture as it is, can be faster than the Go6800 in newer games, but the latter would most likely take over in previous generation ones. Higher resolutions will also be strengths of the Go6800 because of its 256-bit memory bus (X1600 has 128-bit).
However, based on stock 3DMark performance, which this chart is made on, the X1600 is ahead of the Go6800 by a fairly small margin, so that is why it is rated ahead. -
Thanks for the clarification. I'm glad I bought the x1600, btw its 256 bit but I read your posts about it just using around 128, but I don't think its that much a of a difference compared to a 256. Anyhow, thanks again for this great post!
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
The memory bus on the X1600 is actually 128-bit - the Radeon X1800 series has a 256-bit.
I agree about the performance difference. . the benchmark scores may tell a different story than real-world gaming performance. Most games (with the exception of FEAR and other ultra-high end games) won't use a full 128MB of memory. I imagine that if the clocks are similar between the 128MB and 256MB X1600's, the performance should be very similar. Either way, the X1600 is a fantastic card. -
OK, yesterday I got the Omega Driver. I have 2 admit it's better than the catalyst drivers. The catalyst drivers won't let me load hl2 ep1 and dod:s from steam. The Omega actually loaded hl2 ep1 and dod:s. It's good or is it?? After I got the patch, nearly everytime I booted up my machine, it will freeze 4 no reason and won't recover itself. Is this because of Steam or Omega? I have never had this problem with Steam b4. Can any of u's tell pls?
Any help would b much appreciated! -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I suppose the only way to isolate the problem is to uninstall the Omegas and reinstall the stock drivers. If that doesn't fix it, then the game is the source of the problem.
-
Thanks, but the PC won't respond no matter what, I had to re-install my computer today. What a waste of time ): But somehow, the catalyst just won't load source games. Why o why......

Hello, I've recently discovered this site, so if I'm posting the question in the wrong place, spank me.
The link to the comp I'm considering is here : http://www.fnac.com/Shelf/article.a...ID=0166ef0d6-5aa8-e255-ee7d-99c1f7c96c7a&Fr=4
I'm looking for a portable comp. for my higher education, and right now I'm trying to find out if it's good for moderate gaming :
1) What is your budget?
Maxi 1200 I'd say
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Work - DVD - Multimedia - Audio recordings (I'll prob buy an external sound card) - internet - Moderate gaming.
Moderate Gaming=I'm attracted to games like Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2, and World of Warcraft.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Moving around a bit from room to library, and from paris to england
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
see above - I'd like moderate sexiness, but I know that with my money, I won't get ultra sexy graphics
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Whatever
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Dunno - proba around 2
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
nope
9) What country are you buying this in?
France
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
No idea - Whatever
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
This comp has WXGA - seems fine to me
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
glossy non-reflective I suppose
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
They're a bonus - I pay more attention to the durability/solidity
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
Now - Hopefully for 4 years
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
80 is fine
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
This comp seems to have all of these.
The link to the comp I'm considering is here : http://www.fnac.com/Shelf/article.a...ID=0166ef0d6-5aa8-e255-ee7d-99c1f7c96c7a&Fr=4
Important stuff :
Fujitsu Siemens
3,1 kg
Lithium ion 6 cellules / NC
Intel Pentium M Centrino
1,73 GHz / 533 MHz
1 Go DDR2 533 MHz (2 x 512 Mo)
100 Go SATA (5400 rpm normally - I'm struggling to find info on this point - if someone could confirm that would be wicked)
15,4" WXGA
TFT Crystal View
ATI Mobility Radeon X700 Hyper Memory 128 to 256 Mo
1280 x 800
So basically my main question is if it can run BF2/HL2/WOW with moderate sexyness, and if it's a good choice for my use of it.
I have read the "Mobile Graphics Card Info Page" and apparently the graphics card would be fine - but I just want to be sure considering how much money is involved. -
WHAP!!!! Just kidding.
You might want to post the What notebook to buy forum. -

Yes, put that in the what to buy forum and we can help you more. Don't worry, I won't spank you. -
ermmm I've seen the message "the ATI Xpress 200m isnt for gaming" lots of times but I was wondering if it would be good enough to play Guild wars with good quality graphics
. The laptop it is in is the Toshiba A100 with the Xpress 200m 128(shared). Here's the link for full specs
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2274923&CatId=1904
Here are the game req's and recommendations

Guild Wars runs on almost anything. The X200M will have no problems with it.
-
Alright thanks a lot, I was just having a hard time deciding because my HP desktop has a semi lag while playing and I only bought it a year and a half ago. I'm not sure of what kind of graphics card it is using but it was semi pricey (over 2k can$) and has 7200rpm 160gb 512ram (does'nt have that much to do with graphics).

Hey CHaz, where does the ati x1900 stand? Below or above the 7900 gtx?
-
Notebook Solutions Company Representative NBR Reviewer
I have never heard of an ATI X1900. I once read that ATI would release it, but I dont think they will ever do it.
If it would come out, I am sure it would be better then the 7900GS.

The ATI X1900 does not exist in a mobile form. In desktops, the X1900XTX is faster than the 7900GTX. -
Chaz, this little chart has been a real godsend. Everytime I have gone online to shop, I have had this chart minimized on my desktop for quick reference. The few times I went to an electronics superstore, a copy of the chart went with me. Do you know of an up to date and trustworthy comparable chart for desktop GPU's?

I'm happy to see the guide helped that much.
Hm, desktops - try here:

Tom's Hardware also has their graphics charts:

Chaz, that was a fantastic guide. It definitely help clear up the muddy water surrounding the laptop video cards. As a result, I choose to pick up the Asus W3J with it's ATIX1600 as I plan to do some casual gaming now and in the future. Thanks again for writing the very informative guide.

Oh, I didn't know it was just for desktop. I just happened to see it at best buy. <_<

Are Macs bad for gaming?
I'm thinking about going a bit overbudget and getting a macbook pro 15 incher. It has ATI Radeon X1600 with 128Vram but everyone says macs just arnet fit for gaming. Is this true? or should I go ahead and just grab the mac
-
It depends on what you are playing. If you are into FPS or other graphic intensive games like NFS...etc then the Macs aren't going to cut it especially if you hope in playing future games in this genre. If you play strategy games like CIV IV then it's probably fine on that Macbook Pro.

Hey guys, sorry for not visiting here 4 a while. I've been busy in the holidays playing BF2. (I got promoted 2 sergent!). Well anyways, sorry 4 going off topic but has any1 heard this physics card (PPU) called the Ageia PhysX? IT sounds awesome and comes at a price. It introduces real world physics 2 a game. Sounds quite good 2 me, u guys might wnat 2 consider getting it. All it requires is a PCI slot! Good luck with that!
-
Also, does any1 use Azureus here?
-
Hi, can some1 pls tell me what the Nvidia 7200 go is. Is it better than the 7300 go? Thanks
-
great guide! however you might want to add that people doing any video editing, 3d work, or anything of that nature on their laptop, will want at least a performance level graphics card. Just a friendly suggestion, overall wonderful guide the cards out there on the market!

I didnt want to make a new thread for this question, I hope I am at the right place for this question.
What will the score be of the X1700? Configured with a Merom processor, 2 GB 667 DDR2, 80 GB SATA 7200rpm all packed in a 15.4" notebook.
I thought around 5500, what do you guys think?
Charlie
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I don't think anyone can say what the ATI X1700 will get, but it should be an absolute beast:
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=30687
-Eight ROPs - double the current X1600 series
-24 Pixel shaders, 4 vertex
-Eight Texture Memory Units - double the X1600
It might even give the X1800 a run for its money . . we'll see. Thinking about upgrading and getting a notebook with one Charlie? -
X1700 wow.. strange. Would they be able to fit one in a 14" notebook in the near future? That would rule!
-
Notebook Solutions Company Representative NBR Reviewer
Yes Chaz I am very interested in the X1700. Like you said it looks like an impressive videocard. With Merom coming up, I think it would be a cool upgrade.
I am still not sure what to do:
- Buy the upcoming Merom with the X1700.
- Wait until the Santa-Rose based notebooks come, and buy those notebook that feauture Geforce 8xxx or ATI X2xxx videocards.
I just cant figure it out. Thanks for the reply anyway.
Jason, I dont think the X1700 would fit in a 14". I think it is made for 15.4" notebooks, like the X700.

This is a great thread... v. informative and added about £400 to my budget since I realised I needed a x1600/7600 for my gaming needs, within a max 15.4in shell
Being into PC/laptop gaming can make one go crazy
X1700? Thanks but I personally can't afford to wait
-
Wow, what a great thread. I have searching for weeks for something like this that will rank laptop video cards. It has been immensely helpful. www.xtremenotebooks.com sells laptops with a 7600 GTX card onboard. Does anyone know how this stacks up against the base 7800 and the x1600? It seems a bit a pricier but not THAT much more.
I'm agonizing between a slightly less expensive laptop at cyberpowerpc.com and the 7600gtx at xtreme....
I wouldn't ask this, but I couldn't find anything about the 7600 GTX in this thread. Everyone seemed to be referring to the base 7600. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts! -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I assume you are talking about this notebook:
http://www.xtremenotebooks.com/index.php?section=specs&model_id=1123
They made that up - there is no such thing a s Go7600GTX. That is a rebadged Compal HEL80, which has a regular Go7600. -
They made it up? Wow. I almost got taken. Thanks for the info
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I don't want to bash the company though -
http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1277.html
Looks like they are very reputable. Perhaps it is a typo. -
Sorry if this has been answered previously but I don't really have time to go through 50 pages of this thread. I'm looking into the Sager 5750 and the video card it comes with is a x1600. I heard in this model only 128mb of the 512 is actual dedicated memory, so if I have 2 gigs of ram will I be ok. As far as what games I'll be playing they include Far Cry, HL2, Halo, Doom 3, Heroes of Might and Magic 5, and some other games that aren't really graphically demanding like those. I want to maybe get FEAR so how would that and some of the other "newer" games run on this card? Thanks
