    How much better is the 8600m gt ddr3 256mb then the HD2600 ddr2 256mb?

I would guess 5-10% at the same resolution and settings, probably thanks to the GDDR3 memory on the 8600 compared to the DDR2 on the HD2600. If both memory types were equal the 8600 is marginally better than its ATI counterpart.

out of the graphics cards that fall in the hd 2600 / 8600 gt categories, the 8600m gt gddr3 is the fastest, and the hd 2600 ddr2 is the slowest.

    hd 2600 ddr2 < 8600m gt ddr2 < hd 2600 gddr3 < 8600m gt gddr3

As someone said before, maybe a 10% boost at the most, depending on what game you play.

I'd really appreciate your insights on which of these configurations will result in the least warm lap and whether or not that difference is big...

    Thanks A LOT!!

For the sake of completness, these are Sony VAIO FZ-models. (Please note that I'm not 100% sure whether or not the reported (dedicated) VRAM values are fully correct...)

    Hello everyone

I think that you re the only ones in the web that can help since i ve read some related threads and most people here just rock!

    So here's the problem:

I have choise for those two laptops

The Toshiba p200 1jc with an ATI HD 2600 hypermemory (256 ram) link HERE
The Hp Pavilion dv9725e with an Nvidia 8600 GS (512 ram) link HERE

As u can see those two have exactly the same specs and where i live are at the same price.

My needs are to play latest games like Oblivion , Stalker, Witcher, FEAR etc... at a good frame rate in 1024*768 (i prefer lesser resolution but great frame rate) and if possible high graphic quality.

My question is simple : What GPU is better?

P.S: i have a little inclination towards the Nvidia but according to that forum it is way under the ATI 2600 which is close to the 8600 GT not GS. On the other hand lot of people around me have problems with their ATI for compatibility driver update graphic errors ingame etc... So i m little sceptic towards ATI... do I have to?

Thannnnk you very much for helping me!

I wont go for any of those. But if you must pick one.....I would go for the Geforce 8600 GS. ITs true ATI's driver is horrible. My friend couldnt even update his driver without tons of errors and random black screens....

Try to go for Lappy with 8600 GT DDR3 version since your are aiming at the 8600/2600 level card, but again you might have a limtied budget so.. :)

Unfortunately I do not have other choises for GPU's...

AHL you seem to have an HP with Nvidia 8600 gs , is it good at gaming? And what about the clock settings in the HP, it is said that it is stuck at 400 Mhz Core and 500 Mhz mem... isn t there a safe O/c range?

The 8600M-GS is the faster card, go with that. I was not aware the FZ was available with that card though, are you sure about that?
I'd actually point my finger at Nvidia for bad drivers, because they really are putting out some crap. Just about all of the new drivers they put out are in beta form - the expect customers to be their beta testers. That's really lame. I have had more problems with Nvidia drivers than I ever had with ATI. My next video card is going to be ATI unless some things change.

    @ Chaz,

Thanks for your reply. Do you maybe also have an idea how warm the 8600 GS card gets? Does it get much hotter than the 8400 GT or is the difference minimal?

btw. Here in Europe a few FZ-models come with the 8600M GS, most come with 8400M GT.

Check to see how there clocked. ddr2 will produce yhe most heat while gddr3 will produce less.. i think. Also it depends on the laptop but if they are similar models then go for the 8600gs as it performs better. Hope this helps :)

Wrong way round, the clock speeds on the GDDR3 are 200-300MHz faster than the DDR2 version for the same card. That's the reason why G1S owners with a GDDR3 8600GT report much higher temps than Dell Inspiron 1520 owners with the DDR2 variant.

Well, DDR3 is more energy efficient and less heat emitive, but as Harlequin said, at higher clock speed you`ll see higher temp levels. Just not as high as the DDR2 versions would put out.

hello, i am a noob , intrested in buying a lappy with decent graphic card
(betwren performance to hi end video card)
    the Nvidia GeForce Go7800
    Nvidia GeForce Go7900GS
    Nvidia GeForce Go7800GTX

are listed as better than Nvidia 8400 M gt
I would like to know is if Games like crysis would run better in these 7 series cards or 8400 M gt (also i tink the 7 series isint Dx10 compliant......how much big , this issue is in terms of gaming?)

The higher-end 7-series cards will run Crysis much better. The 8400M-GT is borderline unacceptable for running Crysis. It's not a very good card to have if you plan on doing a lot of gaming.

I recommend looking for a notebook with an 8600M-GT. Chances are whatever notebook you get with a 7-series will be outdated.

P.S. Apart from the GPU , what CPU processor should be OK to run modern games in medium resolution [least detail in games till say 2010] ? and should 2 gb ram be sufficient?

I was wondering when are we going to see the 9500M GS starting replacing the 8600M GT? For instance, will we see the 9500M GS in existing machines that you can get right now which use the 8600M GT i.e. Vostro 1500, Sager NP2092, m1530, etc? Or will it not show up until new iterations from each respective company?

For now, the 9-series are Asus and Acer exclusive. At least the dieshrinks are. If/when G94 and G96 based gpus come, they will likely be found in other laptops.

    Hi guys,

I've been looking over this for a couple of months now and am still slightly confused as to which will really perform better in the games i play. I'm aware that the 8700M GT is the more 'futureproof DX10' GPU and it has higher clocks. However from the benchmark list i've been using:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile...tml?&doom3=1&fear=1&or=0&search=&sort=fearmax

shows the 7950 GTX as performing much higher in both fear and doom. Unfortunately the 7950 isn't offered nearly as much as the 8700 so i'll probably end up going with the 8700. If i was using the 8700 with XP and DX9would there be an increased performance in gaming over vista and DX10?

I was going to go with the dell XPS m1710 but that product seems to have been discontinued, so now i think i'll choose the alienware m9750. I'll probably upgrade the RAM and HDD myself since it's so much cheaper. What sort of FPS would i expect to get playing games like COH, Bioshock, World in Conflict at 1680x1050 on medium-high settings?

That's with the T7200 processor and 3GB 667mhz ram btw.

Thanks for any help/comments/tips in advance,
    Rich

The 7950GTX is some 20-25% faster than the 8700M GT, and at higher resolutions, the difference is even larger.

The 8700mGT is basically an overclocked 8600mGT. Since it's basically a 6-series card, it's midrange, but the Go 7950GTX is high-end "enthusiast" class, so it should be (and is) a good bit stronger than the 8700mGT

One thing to note though, the 8700M GT, as all 8th series card are better OCers than the 7950GTX which can barely pass 6k in 3dmarks.

I am pretty sure this is based on old benchmarks that didn't take into account the changes made with the 169-series drivers and above.

The 8700m outperforms should perform roughly the same as a 7950GTX at resolutions 1280x1024 with some older-style games (especailly FEAR) showing the 7950GTX advantage and some newer shader-intensive games (especially oblivion) showing the 8700m an advantage. At higher resolutions, the 8700m starts having issues... and yes they are significant.

At 1920x1200, I could believe the 7950GTX would show a 25% difference as the 8700m is choking itself with lack of memory bandwidth.

    hi guys
am a bit confused over here
it's very well known for the desktop versions of these cards that the 8600 GS beats the crap outta the ATI 2600

but i read in many places that the mobile edition of 2600 beats the 8600m GS

    is that true???
    please confirm guys
and kindly confirm with true benchmark results :D

    cheers

The HD 2600 is closer to the 8600M GT and totally destroys the 8600M GS.

I think it would be helpful to show the highest performing video card that is available for each of 13", 14", 15", 17" laptop sizes. Perhaps here or somewhere else.

just wondering and some very straight question wanted to ask for a very long time:

    8700m GT
    1) Does the 8700GT of mobile dominate the 8600GT & GTS of the desktop version??

    2) How much difference in percentage of the performance of the mobile 8700m GT vs the 8600m GT??

    8800GTS:
    1) Which desktop version are the best 8800GTS?? 640mb? or the 512mb-3? (kinda confusing).

    2) How much difference in percentage of the performance of the mobile version 8800m GTS vs the 8800m GTX??

p/s: Thank you very much for answering these question since i cant refer to anyone but this forum only... really wanted to know the answer because im very curious and also thinking of getting an 8800 GTS for my desktop.

Opinion will be accepted fully and very much appreciated. Thank you.
