Is there a forum out there with a comparable knowledge base to this one that deals with desktops? After my recent experience with my laptop, I want to go that direction so a faulty component won't make my rig worthless overnight. =)

But anyhoo, my friend was telling me that a good CPU is as important for games as the GPU. I believe it was the benchmarking website that said the GPU is usually the bottleneck for framerates. Is my friend full of S? Won't nearly any dual core pentium suffice for current games as long as your GPU is up to snuff?

    www.desktopreview.com :)

Yes, most often the GPU is the bottleneck, especially with notebooks. Most any dual-core processor will suffice for gaming.

Hey - anyone familiar with the new 512 mb Nvidia G 105 that is being shipped in the new HP laptops? I recently bought a dv4t and it is being shipped. I was hoping to find out how much of a performance improvement I can expect over the 9300m. Thanks!

Just barely a performance increase over the 9300M GS, but not much, just slightly higher clocks.

The 9800M GS is nearly double the performance of the 4670. It's no contest.

yeah the 9800m gs is a very powerful gpu and is underestimated because of name gs and 48 stream cpu's. but because that is the only difference between that and the 9800m gts gt gtx. it produces alot less heat and less power. so it can be overclocked like no other.

tavara(i think i spelled his name wrong) flashed his card to the 9800m gt and has records that made my 3870 signal look like crap. (crossfire is a way different story.)

so if price or money is an issue i suggest the 9800m gs plus some overclocking and your set(also a cpu of at least 2.5ghz. i think asus can overclock the cpu by software.)

thx to this site, 4650m is similar to 9800m gs
4650 seems to be better than 4670...

Notebookcheck is wrong, people need to stop reading that site seriously.

The 4650 cannot be faster than the 4670 assuming all other things constant; the 4670 has higher memory speeds. Other than that they are the same card.

this is why i dont use notebook check to see where it stands. i only use class. to pages back i beat a 280m in dual core mode. and they put my card down like it's garbage.

Only thing notebookcheck is valuable for is getting GPU raw info(ex: clock speeds & other such GPU info) as they don't mess that up.

Their benchmarks are dodgy and you really need to actually see their stuff in detail with a grain of salt(for example, check what systems they tested on and what version of a given GPU).

The HD4650/4670 is a step in 128bit GPUs, but they're not yet on par with full fledged 256bit higher end GPUs in terms of performance,. The arrival of the HD4830/4860 might change that, but for now 256bit GPU > 128bit GPU.

Hey guys, just wondering: how big is the difference between the GT 130M and the HD4650? It might be the difference between me choosing the ASUS N81Vp-C1 and the ASUS N51Vf-A1.

Also, what in essence are the important differences between these two machines in terms of gaming? Is there a big difference in what games they will play, and how well they will play them?

    Cheers!

from acer: ([email protected]) strange mail also, is it really from acer?

    Hi

    vi can exchange with a

here are my current "bang for the buck" high-end 3D/gaming notebook picks....
    (with 256-bit memory interface videocards)

    For 17"+
    *(sub-$1500 budget)*
    - Sager NP5793 (Clevo M570RU) .... its hot right now since Sager is making it fully loaded with 9800M GTS and even Blu-Ray drive to liquidate its stock so that they can focus on the new (but slightly more expensive) NP5797.... Clevo M570TU/ETU.
    - Gateway P FX with 9800M GTS is another good choice but does not have better build quality and cooling than the Clevo M570RU.
    - MSI GT725 .... fully loaded 17" with ATI HD 4850
    *($1600 to $2000)*
    - Clevo M570ETU (aka. Sager NP5797) .... new model with Montevina, quad-core and choice of GTX 280M or 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M
    - ASUS G71G-Q2 .... the Q2 makes the list since its fully loaded with Nvidia 9800M, Q9000 quad-core CPU, and Blu-ray drive
    - Arima W840 DI (aka. OCZ Whitebook, Alîenware m17, etc...) .... new 17" dual ATI 3870, quad-core and dual HDD
    *($2000+ budget)*
    - Clevo M980NU (aka. Sager NP9850) ..... new 18.4" with mobile Intel quad-core CPU and dual Nvidia GTX 280M (in SLI)
    - ASUS W90Vp .... 18.4" fully loaded with ATI HD 4870 X2 .... make sure to get a quad-core to make it worth it
    - Clevo D901C (aka. Sager NP9262) .... 17" with single/dual 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M/3700M, uses desktop quad-core CPUs, three internal HDDs, and the best notebook cooling design.
    - Clevo D900F/D901F (aka. Sager NP9280) .... new 17" with Intel Core i7 support, Nvidia GTX 280M (or new Quadro), three internal HDDs, and the best notebook cooling design like its predecessor.

    For 15"
    *(sub-$1400 budget)*
    - ASUS G50VT .... 15.6" with 9800M GS (budget high-end card)
    - MSI GT627 .... 15.4" with 9800M GS (budget high-end card)
..... and the rest of the mid-range notebooks with Nvidia 9600M/9650M, ATI 3600/3650, etc..
    *($1400+ budget)*
    - Clevo M860ETU (aka. Sager NP8662) .... fastest 15.4" gaming notebook with Centrino 2 quad-core CPU support... and Nvidia 9800M GTS / GTX 260M / Quadro 2700M

Alîenware (except for M17 which is re-branded Arima W840) and .Dell does not make the list (mainly for the high-end systems), they are quite outdated and configuration upgrades are usually overpriced.

This is a bang for the buck list... if you want to pay for aesthetics and lights, then look elsewhere.

    * please read the Clevo Guide for further information about Clevo and their international vendors.

    HD 3870 Crossfire > GTX 260M > 9800M GS > FX 2700M (basically 9700M GTS) > HD 3870

No info on HD 4830 yet, but I speculate it to be lower than the GTX 260M, probably btw 9800M GS and FX 2700M, despite its 128-bit interface. Then again, it also depends on the game and resolution. In higher resolution, there is no way it would match a 256-bit card.

while the 3870 x2 is the best, i would not get an alienware. They take forever to get to you (because they don't have a stock) and they are notorious for BSoDs, hardware failures, and everything in between. Just look in the alienware forum for the horror stories with every single alienware laptop. Sager, on the other hand, makes very good quality laptops with awesome prices.

Essentially the extra performance is wasted running 1920 x 1200. And if CF has driver issues with a certain game, you're just out of luck.

well another even though that is true there is alot of games that do support crossfire. i you are going to but beat my single stocked benchmarls in my sig. i was stocked everything. even driver. [email protected] and stocked 3870 single. and see how much more you beat me by. (if it is to much i will have go back and do some of those benchmarks again.)

but remember very little games doesn't support crossfire. so these are in rare occasions.

i have had no BSoD's, it did not take forever , no hard ware failures, and quite frankly this laptop is well built. So you might want to re -word that .. and there are just as many horror storys with ssager they are not the laptops of Gods you know

since i have been here i have not heard a single person complain that Crossfire wasn't supported on any game. Pretty much any game released in the last couple years supports it .

the 9800M GTS has 64 shaders

the GTX 260M has 112 shaders.

so the performance between both are about 20-30%.

the 9800M GTS is still a good performer for the price, but the GTX 260M (same specs as the 9800M GTX) is the fastest you can find for 15.4" systems, and ranks top 3-4 for mobile gaming cards.

Yes the 260m is equivelant to the 9800GTX, but I'm also really interested to hear about the 280 in a 15" although what about the GPU slot configuration... would it allow for a 280m? i would assume so but the heat issues would be a problem
