    Hey guys,
GeForce GTX 285 vs Mobility HD 5870
    what do you think?

oh yeah is GTX 285 worth the extra 55$ for future proofing?

From the benchmarks I've seen they're pretty on par but the HD5870 is slightly stronger IIRC.

Also, the GTX285M is using DirtectX 10.1 while the HD5870 uses DirectX 11 if that's any concern to you.

But umm except the last 2 which you should swap, you've more or less listed them in terms of strength already.

GTS360m, regardless of GDDR5 or not. With GDDR5 it should mop the floor with the HD4670, without it, it would still be competitive and edge it out on mostly everything due to higher more shaders.

    So! The GTS360 is a win-win

330M is more powerful, so for sure you'll be better of with 330M. That is a middle class card. 310M is a low end card though.

so im almost planning on buying the new asus g73 and just wanna know how big of difference in graphics power does this two have? cause currently my 8800gts can only run most games in medium settings. high setting makes it stutter and lag. thanks for all the inputs in advance!

I was thinking of getting the G73jh as well :p

Id say from what Iv'e seen its 40 percent better in games minimum.

And because its such a good deal, that 1500 should last you an extra 1 or two years over most laptops around if you plan on playing games.

It will be faster but is it worth it? The 8800m GTS is still very strong, you should get another year out of it for somewhat high-end gaming. Maybe wait til it starts to show it's age?

I know something better will be out by the end of the year.

Simple few questions. What the net average percentage performance increase with the 285m? Is it worth it upgrade? What the max price worth paying b4 the cost outweighs the benefits?

What game and what resolution/settings? I'd estimate a difference of around 10-20% on average for a single GTX 285M compared to a GTS 260M. Not sure how they scale but assuming that they are proportionally the same, you would see anywhere from 20-40% benefit at the highest resolution and settings.

Umm, if both scale by the same factor, the ratio between them will be the same, so the difference would still be the same 10-20% - assuming that's the right figure for single GTX 285M vs GTS 260M.

i'n quite sure that a single GTX285M will be 50% faster easily than dual GTS260M at full HD res... the GTS260M is very crippled when using DDR3 or GDDR3 memeory... the difference would be much less if GDDR5 memory was used...

Where OH where did you come up with that assumption? Going by memory and the M17x owners benchmarks thread part 1 benches I have bookmarked 260 SLI setups score in the 7-10k range whether stock or overclocked, almost the exact same numbers the single 285 gets in the benchmarks in W870cu owner threads. I know you're taking into account scaling at full HD res but IMO the crysis benchmarks in the 260 SLI and the single 285 at max settings appear to be almost identical as well.

Really though aside the performances being extremely similar it has to be said Nvidia is notorious for having problems with dual card setups in the form of stuttering ect ect. Having a single well performing card in the 285 over the dual 260's *may* be worth it if you can sell your 260's for a good price. Otherwise the M17x r1 might be able to upgrade to the 5870 which would be way more worth it, but nobody really knows at this point if the r1 can take a 5870.

Yeah except the reason the whole comparison got started was laststop asked about comparing his dual 260gtx's to a single 285. I'm not sure why sean brought up the 260 GTS into the conversation.

    Here is laststop's post.

"Simple few questions. What the net average percentage performance increase with the 285m? Is it worth it upgrade? What the max price worth paying b4 the cost outweighs the benefits? "

He doesn't mention anywhere a 260 GTS and only assumes you will read his sig and understand he has 260 GTX's. Also I'm not aware of a mobile 260 GTS existing either?

EDIT: Ah I see the sub thread title thread name, which is 260 GTS vs 285GTX that's whats been throwing me off this entire time... I don't get it, was there a thread merged into this one but yet somehow the sub thread name still retains itself within this larger thread? Weird...

Check this. It pretty much says GT S 260M in the circled part.

Although looking at his sig he must have typo'ed the title. I've never heard of a GTS 260M.

But yeah, Dual GTX260Ms would still best a GTX 285M.

The GTS 250M is just a lower clocked GTS 360M, so HD 5850 would still win by that amount (or a bit more).

Furthermore, the GTS 250M is also sporting just GDDR3, to the 360M's GDDR5, so the results vs. the 5850 are even worse.

The 250M would demolish the GT 330M though.

The cards are relatively recent so there won't be many reviews around, if any. In any case the 5850 is a bit better than the 5830, and given 5850 comes with gddr5 then it is a clear winner.
