The 5850 destroys the 5830. The 5830 is just slightly above the 5650, and worse than a 3870. You get the idea. You can get benchmarks for the 5830 on the HP forums; check the Envy 15 threads.
-
The 5850 with GDDR5 is roughly 20-30% faster than the 5830. The 5830 is not a bad card by any means, but the 5850/GDDR5 is definitely faster. The 5850 with GDDR3 is not significantly different than the 5830, as they're both severely bandwidth limited.
-
Between those two, I'd get whichever notebook you like more.
-
the 5830 with GDDR3 would be destroyed by 5850 GDDR5,,,,
-
destroyed thats a bold state ment
-
It's true. With GDDR5, the 5850 just trounces the 5830. That doesn't mean that the 5830 is a bad card, it just means the 5850 is just that much faster.
-
is the 5830 high end card, like the 5850, also by performance between the to are we talking like 5 fps better etc
-
Both are considered "high end" GPUs, but the HD5850 is still the superior GPU.
The HD5850 will best the 5830 at higher resolutions for sure due to better memory bandwidth. The actual FPS difference will really depend on the game, the resolution and the rest of the computer. -
hmm thanx for that, so hypthitically if I am playing at 1080p could the 5830 hold games at high setting for a year and maybe meduim for 3-4, also what about the 5850, how much longer u think that one holds against the 5830, thanx for your help guys.
-
The 5850 will outlast the 5830 in its ability to upkeep both resolution and details due to better memory bandwidth and higher number of shaders as well as better clocks IIRC. I'd give it a good 2-3 years at high given that games like Crysis don't come out every day
Given that Nvidia's GPUs are simply the same GPUs from 3 years ago but overclocked and they can hold games fine now...
-
which card do u give high for 3 years also what u think of the 5830 for high setings unless thats the one u met
-
I wasn't aware that the 5830 GDDR3 can even do high on 1080p NOW never mind down the road. It is just a bit above medium range.

^ same level as HD Mobility 4670. -
It cannot play on full HD full stop.. the bandwidth limitation due to 128bit bus GDDR3 is too much.. that's why the 5850 is way better.. with 128bit GDDR5... it would have no problems playing on full HD res..
-
Those are very old drivers, and the only thing tested is 3Dmark06, which is not terribly indicative of actual in-game performance. With new drivers (10.3 or later), the 5830 is much faster. It will play some games at 1080, stuff with lower requirements like Left 4 Dead 2. It won't do Crysis at high everything at 1080p, but most desktop cards can't even do that. Even the 5870 will struggle at that.
The 4670 has 320 cores at 675MHz, so roughly 216,000 K-ops per second. The 5830, assuming the performance of the cores stays the same, is 800*500 = 400,000 K-ops per second. Much faster GPU itself. It's hampered by the memory, but it is still a fair bit faster than the 4670, about 1000 points in 3DMark06 standard. -
Right now, there is a difference between the two. But looking back to graphics cards that are 3-4 years old, when they're that close in clock speed with equivalent shaders, etc... there is no real difference.
-
Clock rate and shaders count are only the beginning. There is also application support and even though older ATI 3xxx, 4xxx series chipsets maybe faster than some of the current crop the capabilities support of the new chipsets will have far more longevity.
For example, DirectX11 is only supported on the ATI 5xxx series and OpenCL is only partially supported on the ATI 4xxx series but fully implemented for the ATI 5xxx chipsets. Applications using physics and high levels of flops will benefit from the 5xxx shaders far more than the 4xxx shaders.
This will probably go the same for nVidia when they introduce their Fermi based Mobile line of GPUs. -
How much faster is GDDR3 than DDR3 on the 5730?
What is the FPS difference? -
Great Post,
Where would the "ATI MobilityRadeon HD5650 1GB" go?
I´ve found a 15.4" notebook with this graphic card, Sony Vaio Serie E for 729 -
the 57xx would be a few notches below the 5830 with the 56xx being a couple below the 57xx. They are on the higher tier of the midrange class.
Remember guys 5-6 framerate gain might not seem like a lot but that could be the difference between smoothly playable and clunky. I would advise against the 5830. especially considering the fact that the envy is the only laptop I know that has it. it might St less support than something more common like the 5850. -
The msi gx640 right now is the only one with a 5850 I have seen ( I could be mistaken )
-
Please provide me info and driver links to the Nvidia GeForce GT 320M.
I have looked around online but didnt find much.
Thank you! -
I believe it's a rebadged 230M GT (search the forum, someone posted a GPU-Z screen shot). Just use the driver from nVidia.
-
Quick query guys, I'm getting an Alienware M15X which should be delivered soon. How long do you reckon the GTX260m will last for in terms of decent FPS in games before it starts to struggle...1 year? less/more?
Always the temptation to replace it with a 5870M xD -
I've been looking at a few laptops that have the NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics card in it. Has anyone has any experience with this card?
Can it run most current games on medium settings? Or is it not really cut out for high end gaming? -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
1 year probably...
after that, switch to 5870, to last for another year... (by that time a better one will be around)... -
can someone please confirm this, as not much can be found online.
Thank you! -
anyone?
Thank you! -
from notebookcheck.com , it looks like GT320M is a rebagged 9600M GT , which is way weaker than GT230M...
-
Notebookcheck is often wrong...
-
They haven't been wrong for me yet
Here is hoping continues to remain the same for me.
But Notebook Check isn't the only one. There are other sources who are saying it's a 9600 rebadge and using DDR2 not even DDR3...
And of course the awesome 320M for Apple is an integrated joke with no dedicated memory... Almost a crime selling that POS at that price... -
maybe time to add a 11" laptop to the best video card in laptop size now that the alienware m11x is out.
-
it is a ddr3 confirmed.
you might want to recheck your sources. -
Hi everyone, quick question. Does the ATi MRHD 58xx series support OpenGL 4.0? I searched but found a couple of conflicting sources. Some say 3.2, others 4.0.
-
Was just curious as to how often this gets updated.
I want to know where a few of the newer cards fit in. -
Holy crap, didn't even know I was subscribed to this thread still LOL.
Thanks Jeff! -
I wish this thread was updated more often
What card is similar to the Geforce GT 330M? Is it a re-named/updated 9600GT? -

so do I

i have finally managed to oc my 9650m gt, for those who are interested ive scored over 5.6k points on 3dmark 2006
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=14339535
the clocks are 700GPu and 500 mem, i cant change shader clock at old ntune which only works for me to oc that card for now
those clocks are first/better, didnt try to achieve highest clocks yet -
Can we update this with the nVIdia 3xx and 4xx series along with the ATI 5xxx series?
-
Bump for 5650, 5850, 5870, 460M.
-
What's a good video driver for gtx 260 ?

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a gaming-capable laptop. For me its a fight between the i7-620M and i7-740QM processors.
I would like to get the i7-620M because of its lower power consumption and heat.
However it has an integrated graphics processor. I'll need to have a dedicated graphics card for gaming as well, but I would like to be able to switch over to the i7-620M integrated graphics when not gaming to conserve battery.
I've heard that some laptops are able to do this feature, changing graphics on the fly. Which laptops are capable of this?
Cheers -
Sony Z series laptops
Z Series : VAIO and Computing : Sony -
Hey yeah they look PERFECT, however the customizable versions are only on the US site and I'm from Australia. Here we only have 3 preset models and they're all way more expensive..
I was thinking of using a shipping service where I purchase it and they sent it from the US to me in Aus, but would there then be problems with warranty etc?
Or any other similar alternatives? (graphics switching not really necessary) -
AmazingGracePlayer Notebook Deity
Is there an updated version of this with the new cards?
-
yes, I would be interested updated version of this guide or a site. thank you.

Anyone know how to do a 9800m gs 1024MB from an asus notebook works in m570ru ?
I plugged it and got video screen, but now the notebook started beeping for about 30 seconds and then shutdown.
Please help me, I don't want to buy one more card !! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If it worked and now is not, then the card is dead.
-
The card is still working, but with the same beeping problem !
I think I need of a bios modification to include the vga into system bios, but I don't know how to do that =x
