I always say if it isn't broken don't screw with it. But, if you have problems gaming the latest is:

If you go to the Nvidia site the newest drivers for the 400 mobile seris is
    v267.2Y Beta. Released 3/1/2011.

The last officially released driver was v266.58 ( Jan 18, 2011)

All the discriptions of the driver, whats new, tweaks etc. are listed.

right now I'm using 266.58 with modded inf. I heard the beta 267.24 installs correctly on the Toshiba X505 with gtx 460m. I downloaded them but haven't yet installed. If you install before me let me know how it goes, since I believe you also have an X505.

I haven't upgraded my 8600m GT for so long it's still on stuck on 186.81. I think it's high time for an update so I'm asking which batch of nvidia drivers still supports the chipset and is considered reliable enough for long-term usage.

No takers, anyone with any recommendations for an 8600m GT?

I stopped testing out the latest and greatest drivers for my laptop (8600m GT) a long time ago. I just use the latest one available on NVidia's website and it works fine for me.

If your model doesn't support switchable graphics, then you can just install the latest WHQL drivers from ATI directly. It should be 11.2.

    ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

There is also a "preview" 11.4 Catalyst driver, but that is not currently signed by Microsoft for official use, however it is a really good driver. However, if you want to still with all official, then 11.2 is the latest official driver that ATI themselves released.

Is there any way whatsoever to update the graphics driver on an Acer 8935G with switchable graphics? I'm getting sick of the fact that I can't upgrade just because it happens to have a useless switchable intel graphics chip that I never use. So I'm stuck with the official Acer drivers from late 2009 *shudders*.

After many trial and error I managed to update the catalyst control center before by just installing it over the factory drivers, but it still didn't update the actual drivers. And now my laptop refuses to update the catalyst control center either (from 11-1 to 11-3). The CCC update app just reports that errors occured during the installation and cancels.

If I try to uninstall ANY of the graphics drivers, either intel or Ati, my laptop will show a black screen on boot and I'll have to reformat the entire hard drive. True story since it happened to me twice, so I'm very paranoid of uninstalling any drivers now.

I'd contact Acer support about it if I could, but they're so crappy that they only seem to handle repair issues. Lame. Well, it's a good way to lose customers I suppose...I don't think anyone would want to buy a laptop that can't be updated at all, if their newer models are anything of the same...

In terms of driver upgrades on switchable graphics laptops, which company seems to do it right? nVidia or AMD

I assume that nVidia is more seamless, and I can always go to their website and get updated drivers versus waiting on the laptop maker. Or is the manufacturer still a bottleneck?

Nvidia , does the best so far. You can just go to the Nvidia website to download the updated drivers but you also have to download the Intel drivers as well. Downside is you cannot just install Nvidia without the Intel portion.

For the current AMD switchable, you are dependent on the OEM to release the drivers. Sure you could mod the newer generic drivers to work but at a risk of reduced functionality or increased temps.

However, I haven't tested if I update the intel after installing nvidia...

For an 8800m GTS should I stick with DOX optomized 195.62 driver, go to Nvidia's official 267.76 driver or is there a better modified driver for W7 x86?

GF mainly plays CoD4 on this laptop but occasionally I play Fo3 on it but 99% of the time it's CoD4 if that matters.

I would rec. the 267.31's or 266.87 both seem good on "older" HW, dont bother with 270's they suck if you're not on a 5xx series. The two i said supp newer games while maintaining good perf. The 267.76 are also very bad, try them in 3d mark and comp to 195's and see for yourself...Lately NVidia has been doing a bad job with these verdes

Hello there guys! I have made a guide, that might help on getting newbies into installing drivers in a more easy way. In this case, I use the 11.4 drivers as example. Enjoy :)

WARNING : I take no responsabilities if something goes wrong. I have done this 10+ times, and never went wrong.

THANK YOU, MagusDraco : Do not install these drivers if you have switchable graphics like in the SB CPUs, and some i5s. If you have switchable, you must install the OEM drivers first, and then these ontop, without uninstalling anything.

THANK YOU, ViciousXUSMC : You should only use the "super clean" method if the first easy method brings you problems like worse performance, BSOD's, etc.
    ;)

If you want to do a simple uninstall/install, then :

    1. Download the driver : AMD_Catalyst_11.4_Preview_Win7_Vista_March23_MobilityMod_asder00@Guru3D.7z
    2. Execute it
    3. Install the ATi CIM
    4. When in ATi Catalyst Install Manager, press uninstall
    5. Select the mode you want. If custom, choose everything
    6. Reboot
    7. You will see everything big, it's OK. Just run the file again, and this time, press INSTALL.
    8. Select the mode you want. If custom, tick everything.
    9. Reboot.
    10. Profit :D

BUT, if you want thorough and clean uninstall/install, do these steps :

    1. Download driver sweeper : Phyxion.net - Driver Sweeper and install it
    2. Download CCleaner : Download CCleaner 3.05.1409 - FileHippo.com and install it
    3. Download the driver : AMD_Catalyst_11.4_Preview_Win7_Vista_March23_MobilityMod_asder00@Guru3D.7z
    4. Execute it, install ATi CIM, and when in it, select uninstall
    5. Uninstall EVERYTHING ( choose "custom" and tick everything )
    6. Reboot
    7. Enter to safe mode
    8. Get into driver sweeper and CLEAN AMD - Display ONLY. If anything else, bad stuff might happen.
    9. Reboot
    10. Enter Safe mode
    11. Get into CCleaner, go to "Registries", and "Scan for issues"
    12. Reboot
    13. Run the driver installer ( as in 4. )
    14. Select INSTALL, CUSTOM and tick EVERYTHING
    15. Reboot
    16. Mega profit :D

    Cheers! :D

side note: Don't do this if you're on a computer that uses switchable graphics. You'll clean out the switchable graphics (and then you'd have to install your OEM's amd gpu package before putting the latest ati drivers on top of it)

I think AMD has pretty much said with any new releases just install the drivers, the installer will uninstall and install as needed.

I have done this the last 5 or 6 driver updates with no problems.

The last time I tried to be "geeky" and do a ultra clean driver install by removing it first, then running a driver cleaner in safe mode, rebooting, installing etc...

I had the same final effect on the drivers, but one major problem down the road.

I could not update to Win 7 SP1 on both my desktop & laptop because I was missing some core windows files that the driver cleaner programs wipe out.

So honestly I say never do the super clean method until you have a specific reason to do so like some kind of driver problem.

I firstly did that way, but I had a HUGe FPS DECREASE, and when I did that super clean method, it actually made my FPS go super up.

And thus you just adhered to the recommendation I just made; Only to the "super clean" method when you have a problem.

So you should probably edit your post to reflect that, as for most people its not necessary and can cause just as many problems as it can solve. Thus if you have no problem there is no reason to do it.

Good guide, but I'd have to agree with vicious. If it really did cause a problem, ATI would either include its own "driver sweeper" within the uninstall manager, or suggest using driver sweeper. I have only been doing this super clean method recently, and I've noticed no difference really.

the super clean methode can cause the over clean issue where some part of the registry get damaged and you can't reinstal the ATI driver

we seen it hapen a couple time on multi GPU systems

I always do clean install for my amd cards with the new user profile workaround.

I could never could get the install or upgrade on top to work correctly. I get major FPS decreases and my graphics look like the lowest quality regardless of settings.

Funny, it been doing this to all my cards past the x1000 series, desktop or mobile.

I don't mess with CCleaner, any more. It's caused me driver related issues, ones where I had to go through the registry and delete every Nvidia entry by hand.

A few months later, I chalked it up as just bad luck, so I tried cleaning with it again. BOOM. Never in this lifetime will I again use that virus of a program.

I have an Alienware m17x r1, with the switchable graphics. Wouldn't it be just the same as updating the drivers on an unswitchable system, if I went into the bios and disabled the Intel chipset?

Then just follow the directions for an system without switchable graphics. Would that be correct? I HATE updating my graphics drivers because it seems like something always goes wrong. Only damn updates that ever give me a prob... :(

How would I go about updating the drivers on a dual (switchable) graphics laptop? I have an Acer 7560G with AMD Radeon HD 6740G2, which is basically an integrated 6620G + a dedicated 6650M that can be used in Crossfire or independently. Current drivers are dated for late June 11, the latest I could get from the Acer website (as usual :p), but I'd need newer ones for better CF support...I think this should be included in the FAQ also.

I've only seen fps increases from Crossfire (especially on updated drivers), so I always keep it enabled since minor microstutter doesn't bother me. No harm in that. At least half of my Steam games can utilize Crossfire also.

This thread should be updated with notes for AMD/AMD switchable drivers btw. They can be updated normally by downloading the latest mobility catalyst release without need for anything else.

I have recently purchased DV7 Pavilion with i7 Quad processor, 8gb ram and ATI 7690m XT (2GB) GPU (with swichable Intel GPU)

On paper it should be a monster game machine (better than AlienWare) but the GPU is slowed down by the Jurassic old Catalyst software other GPU support software.

The Catalyst used for this particular GPU is form the 2010 Catalyst (that was basically modified to support the new graphics)

ATI doesnt even mention this new 7690m XT on their site little alone any actual up -to date driver support.!!!!!

The 7690m XT should have no problem running Batman Arkham Asylum or City™ but it does..

It performs like my old Toshiba with Nvidia GT330M GPU.. (which is disgraceful)

Any IDEAS or rummors of HP actually asking ATI to provide a new drivers? or are we stuck with 1000eur machine with 3year old graphic driver??

your machine is by no means faster than the alienware, unless you are talking about the m14x which it is roughly equivalent to or the lowly m11x. but you should be able to update it to the latest catalyst driver 12.x

Hello, Im fairly new to this site, i come off and on, when i absolutely have no clue as to what my problem may be.

i have a minimal computer tower set up. the link above to be exact.

i upgraded the ram to a total of two gigabytes.

and i recently purchased, 7300gt Gigabyte GPU. with a fresh install windows 7 ultimate x86

the problem here is, that the screen will hiccup and hard freeze with no task manager abilities, i have to turn off my system. i see no pattern as to what causes it exactly. everything works perfectly, along with the dual screen. but whatever i do, i cant consistently stay on without going to safemode with networking. Please assist me, im completely lost. if i even run a benchmark the screen freezes, i believe anything adobe or java based, causes it to freeze

I have an old Asus m50vm, which has an nVidia 9600M GS. The laptop is not officially supported under Windows 7, but I have been running 64-bit Windows 7 successfully since it was released.

At some point in time, I started having semi-frequent crashes (of either the black-screen or blue-screen variety). It has been too long since they started for me to remember what driver I was using, or when the problem started. Since the crashes all seem to reference nVidia drivers when I get a blue-screen, I assumed it had to be either heat or driver issues.

I have taken all of the remedial steps that I can think of...using compressed air to help with heat, replacing the hard drive with an SSD, and trying several versions of the video driver. While I sometimes think that I have my problems solved for a while, they inevitably return at some point. Having been through a huge number of nVidia drivers, I am wondering whether anyone has any recommendations as to which driver would be the most stable. If the laptop were officially supported by Asus, I would try whatever they recommended as the latest, even though I'd be frustrated by not using something more recent. Since that isn't an option, I'm left looking for suggestions.

P.S. More often than not, it seems like the crash occurs when two conditions are present...my wife is also logged in (probably with a browser open), and I have a Flash game running. Yes, I have also tried updating my Flash repeatedly to no clear effect. Obviously, I avoid this condition whenever possible, but getting my wife to close her browser and/or logoff is just not a feasible option at all times.

    Thank you in advance.

Wondering if anyone can tell me why my 5650 is basically dead.

After trying various drivers from acer support and amd's site, I always get "completed but with warnings(or something similar).

But no message to restart the computer and no catalyst control center.
I its almost as the only thing installed is the hdmi audi drivers.

    edit:

pc modell is acer 3820tg with amd and intel gpu.

AMD Question: I've upgraded to Win 7 and soon win 8 and will do the same for some clients who relie on me. The problem is "catalyst" control center no longer supports cards below the 5540x series and REALLY stopped support much earlier but NOW it seems official.

I have 2 x 4670HD crossfires and want to use the video conversion program (Commonly referred to as AVIVO?) and in fact found help on issue inteh past in this forum! - But that thread is now closed.

In an attempt to run the procedures outlined in hat thread I only get a vauge message error: 1904 failed to registers call support.

A larger issue was that a number of my clients were running the so called "Open_cl" standard in Vegas and getting improved performance with teh ATI cards who upon upgrading LOST that performance, as for me I saw docs saying support would be available for the 4670 but then was dropped either my teh AMD people of Sony.

But the delema still exists. MUST all the old cards go despite features like crossfire, open_cl standards etc... and how or what can a user do when Hardware manufacturers use software to FORCE the hardware upgrades?

    Duf

I am wondering which driver i should download to update my video card. i have done alot of searching but know one has the same setup as me. its a switchable graphics card. laptop. no intel inside.

I have read keep hp driver on and install new driver over to keep the switchable feature available.
If this is true what is the hp driver i should have on there? And what is the newest driver i can put on there
I have read disable the onboard GFX "Radeon HD 4250" card in BIOS aka "fixed" setting.
I have read uninstall old driver before installing new ones.
I have read uninstall, boot into safe mode, clean-ly uninstall drives with specific programs.
I have read install new driver in safe mode.
I have read many things but i still cant figure this driver update out.

The computer runs pretty good, bf3 has a few CTD but i think thats cuz i play for hrs on end. I have a cooling mat under it and i plan on using compressed air and a vaccum to dust it like i use to on my old Desktop. I play all games in the lowest settings and have the GFX control set to performance instead of quality. All options set to application managed and Catylst AI is disabled.

    i have a...

    HP Pavilion dc7-4060us
    64bit
    windows 7
    4GB ram
    AMD Phenom II N830 triple-core processer 2.10GHz

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650<-------------what i want to update
AMD M880G with Radeon HD 4250

    Driver Package Version 8.77.2.1-100919a-105630C-HP
    Catalyst Version 11.11

i have a restore point i keep falling back on and thrrew my many different trys to update this driver i notice my CCC which is now called AMD VISION Engine Control Center has updated and looks shiny and new with slick buttons and icons, i dont know if this is the reason my computer wont upgrade

    among others
    12-8_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql
    and
    12-4_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc

have been used to try and update drivers, but i dont know if these where right but i was just installing them wrong... aka reboot after? install in safe mode. yada yada blah blah wolf wolf.

please help for this is the 3rd forum im trying.
