Video Games You Bought, That Were a Big Disappointment.

I just bought Lego Lord of the Rings from Steam and I tried 5 minutes of it and it was a big disappointment. I couldn't figure out how to do battle, and it seems this stupid game doesn't take mouse input for control. Nothing I could have predicted unless I demoed or torrented the game first. Big waste of $15.

A $30 waste and big disappointment too was Wings of Prey. No matter what I did on joystick control the plane was unflyable. Plus it limited me to 3 installs. In fact, any game that limited me to a number of installs - I don't buy and I'd rather torrent it. I don't believe in supporting software companies that do this.

Evocron Mercenary wasn't worth the $20 to $26 I paid for it. It's hard hard because it's trying too be too realistic. It's boring being a miner trader when that's all you're limited to, and being a fighter - enemies are too tough and they just blast you with too many missiles. It's a $5 junk bin game to me.

Rise of Flight is a great game. Not a dissappointment but it's too hard to play because it's too realistic, so I don't play it much. I had more fun with the ancient Red Baron game from Dynamix back around 1992 or so. I wish ROF had an arcade mode too.

Arma 2 stank because it was too realistic. Most of the time 1 shot from an enemy and you're dead.

My biggest gripe today is any modern game that uses a stupid checkpoint save game system. Crysis 1 and Warhead were great because there were quick saves and save game. I hated Crysis 2 big time because of the stupid checkpoint savegame system. With checkpoints you can't go to past scene to replay them again. But I bear with some great games that have frequent checkpoint games, like the Batman games and Hitman Absolution.

What are the games that have been a disappointment to you?

Arkham City was probably the most disappointing game I played because it was highly praised by critics. I don't own an Xbox, don't have any hotmail account, and I bought the game on Steam.

Unfortunately even though I was already logged in to Steam, I had to sign up for all these different accounts, including hotmail and GFWL and retype the CD key a number of times on warner bros and Microsoft websites. Then I was able to install and actually play the game, but I couldn't save. Apparently you have to join yet another website, Xbox gamer club something or other, just to be able to save your game. I tried playing for a couple hours without saving and it just seemed like too much hassle, so I deleted it from my Steam library and never played the game again.

What the? You only need a GFWL account (which happens to be, usually, your hotmail account) but you can use any email you want. My account is wired to my gmail and it works since... well since Xbox came out.

You do not need to join any website... as long as you are logged to your GFWL account you can save (it auto saves, you do not have a manual save AFAIK) but if you do not log, you play without saving.

The game is easily one of the best games released so far. Great combat, story and fanservice in general. I recommend you try it again and only properly make a GFWL account and nothing else.

Starcraft 2... hands down. Catered to the pro league leaving the casual SC2 gamer to be obliterated into nothingness.

I spent hours trying to install that damn game. It didn't accept my email provider and I had to make a useless hotmail account that I will never use in order to sign up for a useless GFWL account, and retype the CD key on a warner website and microsoft website, even though the entire time, I was still logged in to the Steam client (where I made the purchase).

Ultimately, I was able to play it for a couple hours, but I couldn't save. I learned there is yet another site you have to join in order to be able to save your game. It was called Microsoft Gamer Club or Xbox Gamer Club something or other.

Hopefully they will change that process at some point, and maybe you will be able to use your Skype account, as I understand MS has now replaced Windows messenger with Skype.

I'm not sure I did the same. I just logged into GFWL account in game and that's it, just like GTA4. Now Harvey Quinn DLC was other thing, I had to sweat a bit to make it running.

Syberia and Syberia 2 were disappointing to me - the low-res nature of the scenes made them less impressive than the nostalgia gamers make them out to be, interactivity was almost nil outside of the puzzles, and the puzzle design was horrible; the greatest challenge to most of them was patience, since even simple puzzles often required five minutes of walking back and forth through the same static environments, and the longest puzzle I remember could have been solved with a handful of sand off the ground rather than the hour-long back-and-forth slog and nonsensical obstacles.

Tales of Monkey Island was a bit of a disappointment as well - half a dozen character models repainted and reused for new characters from episode to episode, little of the classic Monkey Island charm and wit, phoned-in puzzles. It was alright in the end, but inferior to any of its predecessors.

@InspiredE1705 - To be honest, you seem to be writing this thread purely as a way of justifying piracy. We've had the discussion before here (I think you were part of it), so there's no need to start it again - I'm sure we all lie somewhere in the gray area of the issue - but that's what I'm reading into your post. Maybe if you did a little more research before buying a game? It looks like a couple games are up there because they are simply too challenging, and I understand that, but it's on you. In the same way, I'm not into particularly challenging platformers, so I would be foolish to buy Super Meat Boy. If I bought it and then regretted it because the game's too hard, that would be on me for not doing my research before spending my money.

Diablo 3. I played it for about a week, finished the story, and then never picked it up again. Just wasn't interesting enough at the time to keep me coming back. I guess it's better now and maybe I'll pick it up again at some point.

I do have to agree though, it seems like you're trying to justify torrenting games, which is really not a discussion to have here.

Most games I try to research them on feedback rating or Youtube game videos before I buy. But you never can get the actual controls feel of the game unless you try it from a demo or torrent. I torrented Anno 2070 but later bought it. Turned out to be another disappointment because it's a complicated game that I never got the hang of it. I liked Anno 1404 better.

That Lego game I had no idea what the controls where until I played it for 5 minutes. It stank badly.

I mostly torrent games to demo them. I don't actually play it all through because most games need patches so I buy the legal game when it hits a good sale price. Or I torrent to preview a game if it's worth buying.

Oh, I bought Pro Cycling Manager 2011 and I thought it was a stupid game. I torrented SBK 2011 and it stank for keyboard control of a motorcycle.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon (coming from a guy that's played all the main games from 04 to AH, as well as X on the PSP).

Blazing Angels (just utter garbage if you ask me).

Supreme Commander 2 (just didn't like the gameplay style)

Command and Conquer 4 and the other newer games (I'm too hooked on Generals and Zero Hour to like the Tiberium story line).

I'll think of more that I've bought and disliked later

I also have a problem with LEGO LOTR but not the one OP has. You see I can get a bid OCD and try to collect everything and with that game? You can break almost everything to get gold or coin or whatever and it looks like theres no end to it so I kinda give up, even though I love LOTR to dead :(.

Other than that, plenty of other games that I either purchased on day one or got them at a high price then not play at all until they get another ridiculous way lower price or go free. Case in point: Deux Ex HR and Metro 2033. Oh and I have not even touched Diablo III after I purchased it like a month after launch.

I can't think of any PC game that was NEARLY as disappointing as Lord of the Rings for the Super Nintendo. Wow. Just wow.

I do agree that Rise of Flight, while promising, was just too punishingly realistic. I find myself playing IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 much more because a slight finger twitch doesn't result in HOLY COW MY WING SPAR JUST SNAPPED. And did I mention WWI pilots didn't have parachutes? Have fun on the way down, kid...

    That one was pretty bad.

On the issue of controls, I couldn't deal with Fable: The Lost Chapters until I downloaded an XBox 360 controller mapping program and used it for the game. I wish they would go back and spend the miniscule amount of time and money it would require to build controller support into that game; it could easily be patched and then we wouldn't have to resort to using crappy shareware keymappers to get decent joy out of the game - after all, they're still selling it and it would be easy to patch the digital version.

Age of Conan... From install problems to corrupted files to reinstallation problems, I must've spent more time trying to run the game than actually playing it.

The #1 game and the first one that always comes to mind for me was Shadowrun. Why? Because it seemed epic and a game that could not suck as a FPS game with "magic" powers I thought it would be the closest thing to that Jedi Knight mulitplayer experience I loved as a kid.

I bought it at the full $50 as there was no sale and this is when $50 for a PC game was unheard of. I promptly within the first hour realized how bad of a game it was and by day #3 never wanted to play it again, it just simply sucked and was boring :(

Hammerfight is problematic in a lot of ways, but I loved its concept. When I could get used to how far the mouse needed to be moved and how much it lagged, I was rewarded by being able to swing a giant chunk of metal into wooden helicopters so hard they exploded on impact.

    Waste on money

    Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

$55 for the limited edition w/ the F4 DLC, total crap for the campaign and the MP was literally DEAD on the 2-3rd month. Definitely not "Ace Combat" at all (PS3)
Game system was changed so noobs with F-16s can tail a PAK-FA turn by turn with a single press of a button

And now we wait for the crappy PC port which is a stupid idea

Waste of download bandwidth and time

    Ace Combat: Joint Assault

Haxors EVERYWHERE (PSP), campaign is crap and cheesy.
    Dead multiplayer

    MW3 (tunggle MP)
Put simply, it's Money Wasted 3rd time. Black Ops on PS3 was better.

? What was so disappointing about those games? L4d2 I guess I can somewhat understand, it didn't really improve the formula from 1 too much, and in some ways was worse, but HL2?

Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Lockdown ruined a great franchise for me, and it never got back to its roots.

Duke Nukem was unbelievably hyped... and perhaps failed understandably.

CoD MW2 killed any interest I had in CoD after screwing with the mechanics from the enjoyable Cod 4 MW even more. Entire CoD series got ruined after that IMO and became crappy console shooters for little kids.

I also grew to dislike Starcraft 2. I was a big SC1 fan but even after 1-2 years of patience it never regained the play of SC1. Every match hinges on 1 or 2 big battles... and my draw to SC1 was that it was never like that.

Also on 'SC' - supreme commander 2 was a kick in the balls of so many sup com 1 fans.

Oh - and Star Wars the force unleashed. It was a horrendous port on PC, and the control system on the console versions made the game unplayable. Still waiting for a true jedi knight sequel... and a battlefront sequel. Hope Disney pump some money into getting some decent Star wars games back out there.

    My two biggest disappointments were

RAGE: Able to play through once and, I could never get it to run again.

Mass Effect 3: I might as well not played the previous 2 games. Previous game saves meant nothing. OOOOOH, do I have to mention the ending?!

Sims 3 for me. Played maybe about an hour of it during the last Steam sale and that's about it. Sims 1 and 2 I played dozens of hours but Sims 3 didn't feel that much different than Sims 2 tbh.

Also the Company of Heroes games, not because it's a bad game or anything (it's not!), it's just that I am so horrible at real-time strategy games that it just doesn't work for me.

Cant say i have bought too many bad games but the ones i did il talk about.
(No proper order of the titles btw)

First one is Guild Wars 2:
The reason why i dont like GW2 is simply because i hate the combat system as a melee character and that was reason enough for me to ditch the game.
I would probably not have mentioned the game if not for preordering it at nearly full price. (GMG coupons did help a little)
Will still keep it installed so i can revisit the game at a later date playing as ranged or magic based class.

The second game on my list is Planetside 2:
Yes i know its a F2P game but i bought stuff in it with real money before realising some of the flaws within the game.
First its that everything you buy is per character, not account wide or even server wide and i bought a weapon and 3 months of premium or whatever they call it.
Hopefully this will be fixed at a later date or they decide to drop the prices on the item store at least.

My third game of bad judgement, Test Drive Unlimited 2:
The game might be good on the consoles but its utter crap on the PC or at least compared to other similar racing titles.
Feels broken, ships with GFWL and Atari probably dont even give a damn as long as they got the money.

Fourth game would be Battlefield 3:
Not because of Origin, Battlelog or even the fact that we PC players where lied to when EA said it was the lead platform but rather because of expensive map packs, terrible netcoding and rampant hacking.
At least i got something good from wasting money on Premium and that was 50% off the price of MoH: Warfighter, a superior game in my eyes.
No dirty lens flare, extreme sun glare or netcode issues but its a shame it got murdered by reviewers.

Number five is a tie between Crysis 2 and TES5: Skyrim.
Lets just say i expected more from both titles, and especially from CryTek but at least i feel like i got my moneys worth in the end.

The most disappointing games I have purchased in no particular order:

    1) Pokemon trading card game (GB): Terrible, that was a lot of money to waste as a kid

    2) Red Faction 2: Not even close to being as good as the first one

    3) NFS Shift 2 Unleashed: Input lag made the game virtually unplayable, if they could just fix that (which they denied for a long time until their current game in progress (Project CARS).

    4) Alpha Protocol: while the story was fairly interesting (at least imo), the mechanics and feel were horrible.

    5) Rogue Warrior: ....Just....No

    6) Hellgate London: Despite the setting, it was pretty damn boring.

Thats all I can remember off the top of my head.

I can't say I have ever been disappointed in a game. After all, games are subjective experiences so what I think sucks may be someone else's favourite game.

With that being said, the game that comes to mind for me is Diablo 3. It's wierd to say, because I have still sunk a few hundred hours into it playing with old friends. The game is very pretty on ultra settings, multiplayer has been fun since they ironed out the kinks (jumping in and out of games with friends with just one click is great), and I have even become accustomed to getting stuff off the gold auction house and trading or selling it again for profit to get what I want.

Most of my disappointment would be alleviated if they had just called the game something other than Diablo 3. On it's own, it is a good game - not great, not bad. But by calling it Diablo 3 and making the design choices they did, it has just felt wrong and not in tandem with the Diablo canon.

Well I was also very dissapointed with gta IV. SA and VC were so much better, except for graphics obviously. Maybe it was also so dissapointing because I played gta IV on the ps3 while I played san andreas on the pc which was a ton more fun with mods and such. Let's hope gta V will combine the best of all gta's.

    The short list (PC):

FEAR 2: ultra bland gameplay - lacked exactly what made the original so good.

COD: MW3: Yet another copy + paste sheep game with a different story. Worthless.

Far Cry 2: It certainly was a far cry from the original ...

Battlefield 3, horrible rubber banding makes it almost unplayable for me and the absurd map pack prices means they won't get anymore of my money ever.

COD black ops. I sunk hundreds of hours into COD4 and MW2. This sucked big time, not bought one since.

As a big Counter Strike 1.6 Fan, Counter Strike Global Offensive is for me a big disappointment. They promised a gameplay that would be almost 1.6 like and also the good features of Source, in order reunite all the players. The recoil in this game is just crap and how to make the ak 47 less effective? Just disappointing. :(

Oh god yes. I am getting my kicked by people with freaking machine gun trolling around, the recoil is beyond understanding.

This thread just makes me hate more and more of my games! Amazing stuff.

Very odd seeing games like Skyrim, HL2, and GW2 on this list. Those games are among the very best the gaming industry has to offer and are either GoTY or should be. IMHO if those games are "disappointing" to you, then you gotta wonder if your expectations bar needs a reality adjustment. There are many games I would say are "not my thing", but I would not mention them in the same breath as the list below.

Diablo 3 - absolutely the biggest disapppointment in 30+ years of gaming. Diablo 1 and 2 are among my absolute favorite games and I still play D2 from time to time. D3 was absolutely abysmal at release. They have since improved the game into the mediocre range, but the massive dissapointment in finding that D2 is still a better overall game this long after release is still staggering. The result is that I have no interest in a D3 expansion and the entire Diablo series is now ruined for me. If named something else , this game would be a mediocre title I would have forgotten 6 months ago. Carrying the Diablo name meant I expected at least something as good as Diablo 1. Sadly, I am sure this game really shoud have been a great deal more, but some executive made a money grab and trashbagged the game we all saw in development for a sanitized, gimped, dumbed-down for the ritalin-generation, half-hearted wrapper for a RMAH.

WoW - The game wasn't awful in its release. It did indeed have problems, but they were to be expected given the undertaking. Somewhere after the first expansion pack they lost sight of a real MMO and it became a pre-teen themed chatroom. They made everything so easy that any person slightly smarter and more coordinated than the average pebble you find on the ground was pretty much guaranteed to succeed in everything. Sadly, despite the moronification of the game, the community actually devolved to be worse with each iteration. The latest expansion brought it just one step away from "hello kitty". I am expecting the next expansion to remove sharp objects and make every battle into a pillow fight. The one after that will remove fighting altogether and inititate "cuddlefests".

I did not buy Starcraft 2 as I got to play beta... I will never purchase another Starcraft game ever again. Frankly, unless Blizzard decides to change completely at this point, I will never buy another Blizzard product as they have stopped making games for people mentally over the age of 9.

I can understand seeing GW2 there, it's a great game imo and I play it often, but it definitely fell short of the "revolutionary" for MMOs the devs were touting and there were launch bugs which were kinda annoying. so I can see why some would be disappointed.

For me, I am rather careful with my purchases so aside from C&C 4 nothing really.

Valve just released a big recoil update.

CS series is doomed any way due to the 1.6 community. If Valve don't change anything from 1.6 - they get accused of a lack of innovation... and if they change anything from 1.6 they get accused killing the cs name.

Its funny because the same thing was said about 1.6... and 1.5...and 1.3...

I've enjoyed it purely because of the matchmaking. Big step up because of that and not having to deal with idiot server admins.
