Hey guys!!!
I am totally new to the thread postings. So, just excuse me for any error in the info that I have typed in...
Actually, about 7months back I had purchased a new Acer Aspire Laptop which specifications are as follow:-
MOBILE INTEL CORE 2 DUO T5800 @ 2.0GHZ 2MB L2 CACHE
MOBILE INTEL GM/PM 45 CHIPSET
640GB 5400 RPM HDD
BLUE RAY COMBO DRIVE
NVIDIA 9600M GT GDDR3 512MB CARD
16" WXGA 220NITS 8MS RESPONSE TIME SCREEN
4GB DDR-2 @ 800MHZ RAM
WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE X64 EDITION
Thats pretty much all of it. Its Acer Aspire 6930G Series Laptop.
Now, I needed a little advice or help from all of you as to what exactly I need to upgrade in my laptop to gain more performance out of it. Because, there are few games that just seem to provide accurate FPS to play. Like Crysis, Crytoasis etc.
Should I change my CPU to a faster one that might help me in gaining some FPS. Also, I read on intel webpage that GM45/PM45 chipset supports both DDR2 / DDR3 ram as well. But is it really worth switching to DDR3 ram.
Just tell me whats needed to be done to get some good score in 3dmarks 06 as my CPU score less then 1FPS in test and I end up getting 367 points for cpu benchmark.
I have a mid range budget but I need all your advice as to how to spend it and where to make this laptop better in configuration.
Thanks
-
qx9300 is the best cpu
but that thing will not handle it ....
also do not think ddr3 works in there
and right now you CPU is your bottle neck but even if you do upgrade the cpu you gpu is midrange at best so you will just end up bottle necking the GPU..... your goign to have to turn down settings
and you can forget about crysis running 20-30 fps with out any mods
-
Your motherboard most likely does not support DDR3 physically, the chip design is different. The GM/PM45 chipset is just able to be used in different applications.
-
Then what is going to be the best mxm 2 card that will not give me tuff time. Because as of now even with older games like need for speed most wanted with high setting enabled the fps keeps jumping a big amount like from 12fps to sudden 50fps..How to get rid of this problem. Do you suggest an upgrade in vga card then which one would be the best because I dont know if my is mxm 2 or 3??? slot..Or if you suggest a processor then which would be the fastest that I can have???
Thank you for your replys.... -
Umm i think something is not right here. Does that processor get that low score for 3dmark (367 ??? ) I have a 2.0GHZ T7250 with 2MB cache and iirc i get around 1500 for the cpu in 3dmark...
And NFS Most Wanted lagging? ummm thats also weird... Maybe drivers? -
Your 9600 is already the bottleneck. Getting a better CPU (if your chassis can handle it) will raise your 3dmark score, sure, but your typical games will only go up 1-2 FPS. Unless it's a CPU run game, like GTA4, you won't notice a difference.
In other words, it's a waste. Live with you got, overclock your GPU to the limit, or find a better laptop.
And DDR2 and DDR3 are different pin count, they cannot be swapped on the same mobo. -
I would sell that laptop and buy a new one with a decent GPU in it such as GTX 260M, 8800 GTX or 9800M GT for example. Getting a better CPU won't make much difference and will be a waste of money. The only way to gain a bit more performance will be by overclocking the GPU along with updating drivers.
It is a shame you didn't come here and ask before you purchased it. I am assuming that you didn't know about this site until recently. -
Yea..thats absolutely correct that I havent come to this site before I purchased my laptop because I didnt knew about it until now recently....Then is there any laptop that acer aspire/HP would be having at the moment with GTX 280M GPU under the hood....Because I am looking at a real good deal one then not much expensive at all, medium budget....
Also, is this true that laptop pci-e slots are changing from mxm 1,2 and 3 to a different version called as mxm-a & b. -
if you put a 3.06Ghz in that laptop, it would probably explode. chances are that the bios doesn't support either CPUs
-
Thats why i like the MSI G725 with P9500 Processors, they overclock in there sleep to 3 GHz
at the touch of a button, thats a nice increase.
-
I dont know but when I checked with the acer guys they only told me that mylaptop socket design PGA487. So, according to these guys they say it will support only core 2 duo series any chipsets even 3.2ghz processor but my concern is fsb is determined by the processor or by the motherboard. I mean my current processor is 800mhz fsb but 3.2ghz is 1066mhz fsb. So, this means that if i take 3.2ghz processor with 1066mhz fsb my laptop fsb will change...Because i am totally confused also about my pci-e wheather its mxm 2 or 3 no idea...
Acer aspire 6930G in europe has 3.06ghz processor with 1066mhz fsb....deos that mean all models under 6930g carry same chassis design.
Thanks for replying -
Even if you did manage to upgrade your processor to a 3.0 Ghz, you wouldn't see much performance increase in gaming. You might notice it in applications or the few CPU intensive games but not the majority of them.
Unless you can find a way to do something about the GPU, you won't see much improvement. -
Ok since all of you told me that my current processor is more then enough for gaming as well as multi tasking but what would be the best GPU available for me to fix under the hood...like which graphic card should I buy to increase gaming response because I dont know what type of mxm slot I have in my laptop.....!!!!!!Please help me in guiding which would be the appropriate GPU for my laptop Acer Aspire 6930G since I dont have much knowledge in this field.
Thank you for your reply's -
Physically a 4670 would fit and be the best option, but I doubt the BIOS will ever support it. And even if it's the same MXM, it may require a different heatsink?
-
Then based on my current heat sink...whats the best mxm card I can get under the hood for my laptop...also what type of mxm do I hold, if anyone could tell me....If you are saying 4670 ATI then deos that mean I have mxm 3 slot....Please, help......
Thank you -
What about cards with 256-bit interface...because my cooling system in laptop is outstanding from manfacturer...also, they gave a 3yrs hardware warranty coverage on the all internal parts which is valid till oct 2011....
Which is the exact card I can get cuz my bios is no more original one that was equipped with the system but I had asked acer to issue a new updated version of pheonix bios which I paid some money and got my old original bios flashed...
What about Radeon 4870HD will that be supported also about nvidia 9800m gtx will that be supported.....Guys please help me....
Thanks -
No they won't fit, and if they could your laptop would literally set on fire. It will be hard to find a 4670 MXM type II card for resale, and I really doubt you'll find a BIOS to support it. You're pretty much stuck with the 9600
-
then what am I suppose to do to gain a little bit more performance like cpu??
-
OC the 9600 GT if you haven't already...
-
Yep, overclocking is your best option. You can use Rivatuner to do this.
-
the best advice now is to really research before you buy, just to make sure you get what you want.
-
Actually guys to be honest with you all....I am staying in oman which is part of gulf country...So, myonly option with standing is I have to ask the acer guys if its a processor or gpu upgrade cuz they can only get the part for me couriered from UK....Since there is no other way here in gulf....
Also, I tried riva turner but after installation the overclocking or oc feature are disabled because of these acer bios.....I know you must be knowing that overclocking laptop gpu or cpu is next to impossible....I tried once but screen turns wiered andno response then have to manually turn off comp and turn it back on.....My problem is just tell me based on my current comp configuration wut shud I upgrade from these guys wheather a cpu or gpu to gain performance in gaming because i have no problem with my applications...only gaming is my main issue....To be honest this is the first time I brought a laptop and I really didnt knw what is mxm...I taught it would just be one slot where u can add any card just like desktop pci-e.......
My vista rating is as follow
CPU - 4.9
RAM - 4.8
Graphics - 5.9
Gaming Graphics - 5.5
Hard Disk - 5.5
Base Score - 4.8
I have the following configuration
MOBILE INTEL CORE 2 DUO T5800 2GHZ @ 800MHZ FSB 2MB L2 CACHE
NVIDIA GEFORCE 9600M GT GDDR3 512MB
640GB 5400RPM HDD
4GB DDR2 - 800MHZ
BLUE RAY DRIVE
But I dont know what typr of mxm Slot I have got nor deos the acer guys...they tell me like tell us what gpu card you need we will get it and then check if it works or not....they are like located from my house at distance of 215km....so travelling that far and then the gpu deosnt work its gonna be real bad.....So, may be you can all tell me wheather shud I change my cpu or gpu......or you suggest me to wait till intel launches there upcoming clarkfield processor and Intel 5 series chipset along with windows seven.....
What you all tell me is exactly what I will do now.....
Thank you all for your replies. -
If you want to upgrade the CPU, go for it, but you'll agree it was a waste of money. Upgrading the GPU is out of the question. You've already got the best GPU Acer supports in the laptop.
And you've still ignored the question; have you overclocked the 9600 GT yet? Download Nvidia System Tools 6.03 and overclock the GPU under device settings in the Nvida control Panel. Try 600/1500/850 for starters. -
Okay will try clock settings 600/1500/850 and let you know abt it.
-
what are the highest clock I can achieve for my gpu???with standered cooling system thats in my laptop....cauz I dont know how its done like what sort of multiplication is done in shader, memory and core clocks...please help.
Also above clocks looked stable and only thing that changed in vista rating was
Gaming Graphics which was 5.5 became 5.6
So, just give me the max setting I can do to my GPU with current cooling system...
Thank you -
Don't ever use WEI to benchmark, it's useless. Download 3dmark06, it's free. Also try the DMC4 benchmark, you don't need to download the whole demo. If you've got crysis, you can also use that benchmark, but I'd only test medium shaders/shadows up to 1280 x 800~ I'm not sure if your laptop is 16:9 or not.
I've had a DDR2 9600 GT in the past, my highest stable clocks were 650/1650/575, but every card can be a little different. My memory was 400 stock, yours is 800, so you're already better off. -
Also, guys I have a retail version of windows vista ultimate that can activate either x64 edition or x86 edition of ultimate with one key. So, I am using 64-bit edition of windows vista ultimate...deos that have to do with gaming performance.....shouls I switch back to the 32-bit one and which edition of vista is the best for gaming...
-
Stick with 64 bit, without it you're limited to 3-3.5GB~ RAM. Native 64 bit apps and games will also run more efficiently, supposedly.
-
My is 16inch screen with native resolution of 1366x768 which is 16:9...I am testing crysis now with optimal settings and only thing that changed was shader to gamer mode and rest all at mainstream level and 800x600 resolution.
-
Try everthing high, except shaders and shadows at medium. Native resolution. Try 625/1600/900 clocks.
-
Is thier a way I can overclock my laptop cpu which is T5800 @ 2.0ghz to a little bit higher speed that would be stable with my factory cooling system...
Also, clocks 625/1600/900 worked great at native resolution and crysis set at gamer mode which is med high setting got around 20fps min no hazzles. -
What do you think abt my current Gpu?? Up to how many more months its gonna last in gaming market...In term of supporting the upcoming games...
Thanx -
Just tell me next time I decide to buy a 16inch laptop how do knw if it has a mxm 3 slot or not because all models in market dont comeout with high end cards...
-
Use the edit fn so you don't multipost. What notebook do you have (Acer)? What are you using it for? Once you answer that, then we'll see about what upgrades you can do and if you even need it (ie. will you notice a difference).
Btw, there is no 640GB HDD for 2.5", unless you mean 2x 320GB HDD. And most notebooks don't allow you to OC. Is your GPU GDDR3 memory or DDR2? -
if you want better performance, buy a gaming laptop.
or buy a great desktop and keep the laptop you have now. -
I would suggest to get at least a P8600 and or overclock your GPU, the Nvidia 9600GT is powerful, but people just go with more powerful cards say 9800GS to get an optimal game level, all depends on your gaming and multimedia tastes and your eye
-
I have a Acer Aspire 6930G. My current card is Nvidia 9600M GT GDDR3 memory. Yes, I got 2x320GB of Hard Disk.
My Processor currently is T5800 2GHZ @ 800MHZ FSB.
I have 4GB DDR2 Hypnix Memory @ 800MHZ..
I use my laptop for basically, Music, Surfing, Movies, Gaming.
I play Crysis Warhead, Crytoasis, Half Life 2 but I would also like to play upcoming NFS Variable, Half Life 2 Ep 3, Bioshock 2.
So, whats best can I do at the moment.. -
Amazingly no ones here had told aditya900 that neither CPUs will fit on his machine. The highest you can go with would be the X9000.
-
Thats what I had in mind of upgrading the cpu and I guess x9000 should be 3.06ghz which would be 50% faster then my current cpu...But will this 50% make a difference in gaming....Like notice any increase in FPS.
Also, Nirvana I have my laptop GPU Oc at 625/900/1600 at standered laptop cooling system that came along with my laptop. My question is it really safe to keep at that clock..I mean my chip will not fry rite...Cuz I do a lot of gaming like for 4hrs straight...... -
The answer to this question has already been established in previous posts (many times) as to whether upgrading to a 3.0 Ghz CPU will improve performance in gaming or not.
-
Yea thats true....its been answered already many times but half half not fully answered.....
Because my fear is when I run 3d marks 06 and when there is gaming benchmark with cpu at low setting and 640 by 480 resolution I end up getting only 1 or 0 fps......
But when it benchmarks same game with same setting and GPU I get around 120 - 125 fps easily.....then whats wrong with my cpu.....
You, all knw for this exact same reason I asked acer guys to go under warranty and replace the cpu.....I actually got it replaced under my 3 yrs warranty.......hoping it would do better....
Before this laptop I had core 2 duo T5500 1.6ghz and in that processor with intel gma950 with same 3d mark 06, with same settings and bench mark cpu use to easily achieve around 5 fps easily......
That means my current processor is 400mhz faster and should achieve more then 5fps rite..........
Please, guys its a serious matter and I really need all ur experts advice here....Cuz acer guys are like we will replace the processor again....I mean how many times I will replace my processor.........
I need a big time help here.........helpppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!! -
because the freaking 3d marks uses your cpu as a gpu ..... they are different architecture
the qx9300 gets 1-2 ... chill out either processor will kill games -
Thank you..............Mr.Moo

people don't seem to tell you that the x9000 runs at 2.8 not 3.06, the X9100 is the one that runs at 3.06 and your laptop doesn't support it. if you want to buy the x9000 i don't think your Bios will be able to overclock the X9000, it can only be overclocked thru Bios only unless you get a software overclocker in which i don't know if there is one for your model since i have never owned a Asus. but if you go with the x9000 just be careful on the temperatures cuz of its 44w rating vs the 35w on your current cpu. you can use RMclock to undervolt the cpu to get lower temperatures so you wont get a hot potato laptop. the x9000 runs about $350 on ebay, or if you want a gaming laptop you can always get a gateway 6831 or 6860 model for under $700 or less on ebay. its quite a good gaming laptop for the dollar but much heavier in the process. if you install the x9000 on that gatway it will allow you to overclock the x9000 to 3.0 due to Bios and thermal limits. usually the x9000 goes to 3.2 or 3.4 in overclock mode. but you need one good cooling system inside the laptop.
-
Thnx.............so this deos mean I will gain a performance increase.....
-
Yes. By how much? That's the question.
-
yea coming from that cpu to the x9000 you should see a nice performance increase in games, i couldn't tell you how much but it just depends on the game. but with those overclock on your gpu and the x9000 i would say 15% min. just be careful on the temperatures and undervolt if necessary.
-
Your laptop temperature will go up quickly once this thing is powered!!
-
How exactly is he going to see a nice performance increase in games when the GPU is the bottleneck? Benchmarks have shown that many games see little increase in performance even when going from a 1.8 Ghz CPU to a 2.98 Ghz CPU due to the GPU bottleneck at certain resolutions.
If he sees any increase in performance, it will be from over clocking the GPU. -
i think laptopnut is right here.....Now I realized, sorry laptopnut, I understood now what ur trying to tell me here....Took me so late........
Guys you can only see massive increase in performance if its an integrated card like intel that depends entirely on cpu pace and performance...
With cards like Nvidia or Ati they have thier own clock speeds and they dont depend on cpu...unless we have a game that requires cpu also.........but how many such games are thier......I guess one in every fifty.............
Well oc is my only option here to see rise in fps.............other then that cpu isnt going to help much...........
Also, guys pls keep in mind that core 2 duo 2.0ghz is rated at desktop P4 4ghz speed.......
Basically, its 2ghz per core............
LaptopNut.......Is my current oc okay for my GPU 625/900/1600 @ 23watts........my original were 500/800/1250 @ 23watts.......Such oc will not cause me any trouble rite..............
Also, to all guys out here I played Crysis Warhead at following details:
After OC:-
Graphics - Gamers Mode
Resolution - 1024 by 768
Achieved around 22min fps not bad at all at med high settings......
Thnx LaptopNut
repped
What is better cpu QX9300 or T9900?
