I used PowerStrip to overclock my 200M core to 350Mhz. I'm still looking for a way to tweak the memory timings (starting to think it can't be done).

And to the person that said "No Way" to those 3Dmark scores, my score jumped from around 750 to 822 after the overlclock, so Chazman's numbers are pretty much on the money.

One thing I haven't tried yet though - is it safe to install the latest Mobility drivers on my system (listed in sig)? ATI specifically mentions using company specific drivers (including HP)... I just don't want to break anything as I'm trying to fine-tune this beast....

    Hi all,
I just want to know, since there is a mix of cards we are talking about here, if the system I just bough is decent for the money, here are the Specs.

    Dell Inspiron 6000
    -Intel Pentium M 2.0 GHz
    -1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 533 MHz
    -80 GB 5400 RPM HD
-128 MB PCI Express ATI Radeon X300 SE
    -15.4" WSXGA
-8x DVD +/- RW with Double Layer

This for $1400 after shipping and tax, was I think $1250 original.

    Thanks in advance

I'd like to see a screenshot of HL2 at 840x525 (with all detail settings on high) and a camera shot of it stretched 2x (1680x1050)

Oh, and use ATI Tray Tools to enable Adaptive AA

For an ATI card, find a registry key DalNonStandardModesBCD
xx,xx,yy,yy,00,00,00,00 -- last 0s mean don't restrict colors or refresh rates
    Such as" 12 80 09 60 00 00 00 00
this old guide is still relevant, though other unlisted modes may work too:
    http://www.dtvmax.com/radeon_guide.htm

oh, if only I could get the HP dv8000z with discrete graphics and a dual core Turion once they come out
    :hp:

    Nice smileys!

:eek:verheat: (refers to oldest sister's laptop that she replaced with a Powerbook -- Athlon XP 1400+, 65C idle, 85C load)

Here are some screenshots from my laptop:

This is Half Life 2 at Maximum everything, 1680X1050, 4X AA and 8X AF. See attachments

EDIT: I did not use adaptive AA . .just regular. But at those settings, it shouldn't matter ;)

If you are wondering, I get 49FPS average.

Is that the Xpress 200 or the X700?
I hope some time HP makes a revision of that laptop with the supposedly X700-level graphics OR just make an option for discrete graphics.

If I were to get that notebook (a helluvalot cheaper than the Dell Core Duo + 7800 GT Go, and much more elegant too) I'd want graphics not to be a step down from my Athlon XP-M 2400 + Radeon 9800 Pro 128

Then again, I face the parent approval factor (I'm a freshman at the local but really good college Cal Poly :budget:, living at home, and parents say "desktop is too distracting, use this [Celeron 700 + S3 Savage IX laptop] instead!")

The point of 840x525 is that it's exactly half (a quarter?) of 1680xx1050 so it should scale decently cleanly and allow other detail settings to be turned all the way up

Oh, and Adaptive AA is not Temporal AA, it's Transparent AA

P.S. again: I hope Vista (eventually) won't gripe apout NO HDCP!!11!!one!!! [/me rants]

They wanted a screenshot of HL2 at 1680x1050, so I provided one.

I can provide another screenshot at a lower resolution if you'd like. :)

    I don't think I can use 840x525

Sure you can, just use either Powerstrip or manual registry editing to add the custom resolution.

Lowering the sound quality should also help with overall performance. Not that that is an Ati issue but...

Seeing that HL2 played very well on my old NB with an Intel 900, I'd say its safe to say HL2 will play without a doubt on the x200m.

its all a question on what you are willing to give up, i.e. resolution, special effects, etc...

i bet the x200m would play HL2, but how enjoyable would it be when you gotta turn off all the things that make the Source 3D engine so nice. but its all personal preference

To answer your questions, HL2 runs fine on my shared 200m, 800*600 with all settings on high (except for AA/AS, I keep those turned off)

    I've got a Pavilion ze2366 Turion64 1.8Ghz, 512MB, 80GB, Xpress 200M Bright View with.
200M Graphic isn't dedicated and uses shared memory.
I've installed the newest Omega drivers but couldn't find any options to tweek the vpu mhz's.
I haven't tried power strip or riva tuner yet.
Presently I only get following 3D Marks scores:
    3DM03: 970 Points
    3DM05: 470 Points
It doesn't make a difference if I use 64MB or 128MB from the system memory, the points are the same. Changing the Direct3D or OpenGL settings from quality to speed doesn't have a noticable difference either.

I think you need at least 128MB, but there just isn't anough 3D power available. It might play at 800x600 with lowest details and everything off.

I've installed power stripe on my NB and managed to overclock the IGP to 400 from 300Mhz standard. But it only gained 70 more 3DM03 points!! I think the 200M is at its limits and only a memory overclock could boost performance. Unfortunately because of the shared memory it's not possible.

PS. I got 900 with 3DMark03. After I overclocked the core clock from 250 to 280 I got 917. I'll try to bump it up to 350MHz and try to benchmark again. But yes, no big difference with IGP.

Could you do people a favor by screenshotting HL2 at 840x525 with AA and AF on high? I'd love to know how well that works (minimum framerate)!

Now I'm all curious about wow. HL2 on a laptop = lot's of wait time. Even if the 200m plays it descently, you're gonna be waiting around a while while the game loads every 10mins in each section. Even my 7200rpm takes forever.

btw, if anyone has a laptop with 200m curently and has the OLD half life installed, would you let a guy know if it runs well? Actually if you have counter strike 1.6 running, I'd like to know how it runs more than half life itself :D

Since ST4rm@n brought this back up into the fore, how bout BF2???
I run HL2 perfectly, btw, meaning highest rez possible, 16:10 aspect, ALL eye candy on. Its wierd cuz depending on the environment and what I'm looking at in the game, fps changes, so the ceiling gives me 70fps, whereas the street eye level is around 15fps, yet there is no noticable difference in gameplay, runs smooth everywhere.

does your x200m have its own dedicated memory? I have 128MB shared memory...
I havent tried BS2 yet but all the previous BF's run at 35fps 1024 middles settings.
COD2 runs between 15~40fps 1024 lowest settings. I expect BF2 to be the same.

I would run Call of Duty 2 under DirectX 7 if you aren't doing so already. It is much easier to handle because you don't get a lot of the 'eye candy'.

Just go into Options, then change the Rendering Mode Preference to DirectX 7.

If you've only got 896MB of 1024 available, that means your X200M shares the memory as well.

Wolfenstein Enemy territory was running in slow motion on my 200m based NB (maybe it is because of the widescreen). My old PIII with 512MB SDRAM and GF FX5200 runs ET 10x better than this new notebook. Civilization ran constantly at 10 FPS, WOW worked almost fine. Any ideas how LOTR: BFTMEII runs on 200m?

Can someone plz confirm to me how "well" Doom 3 performs with 200m IGP in timedemo 1??

"timedemo demo1 usecache" or ""timedemo demo1 -usecache" I don't remember heeh

640x480 low or medium and all eye-candy turned on
800x600 low or medium whatever all eye-candy turned off

    TIA

    :D

    BTW: I got 7.8FPS 640x480 all on, and 23FPS 640x480 all off with my old MX440-SE 64bits 64mb :p

    geforce 4 mx440 = geforce 2 ;(

Plus, you're comparing a card you probebly have on an older system with a slower processor. So with a better processor, it would probebly outperform the x200m. double ;(

So, small conclusion is, x200m is more likely to perform like the early geforce cards before geforce 3. I can't confirm, but from what you guys are saying, this sounds fairly accurate.

If you post system configs for both systems that would be nice. Thanks

    "new" system: MSI 1013 (aka S270), Turion MT-34, 1gb 400, xpress 200m

if the 200m get 35fps with everything turned off, lowest res, and config tweaking that would be nice. :D

ugh, i hope you're not planning on playing doom 3 at these fps'. I wouldn't even play it at 35 tbqh. Expecially at that res. Play some old games!! cs 1.6! Or warcraft 3! I don't know about you, but I can't enjoy things if they chug at less than 60fps on average.

so the new system is one you're waiting to buy?

btw, chazman and dadash, what are you're systems configs for your x200m systems and whatever systems you have your mx440's on.

Does anyone know which type of card the compaq V2000Z uses? I know it's the 200m but I don't know if it has any dedicated memory in it as some models apperantly do.

the X200M is comparable with a "Geforce 4200", alot better than a lowly MX440

    I think the V2000Z's 200m is 128mb. Not much better tough :p

yes, I'm planning to buy this 1013 :D

I've already played doom 3 a little with my MX-se, 23FPS, was horrible, but was "fun", too bad Doom 3 isn't a great game hehehe, but RoE and Quake 4, wow, these are good FPS.

I had a 6600GT but I sold it, paired with sempron + 512 the 6600GT was nothing but average. Had to play fear 1280x1024 2AA8AF everything low (because of 512 memory). And Quake4 same settings (I finished the game in one day :D)

Anyway, find out that Settlers IV runs great on my onboard old SIS chipset that doesn't even play ET or Rome :p

Doom numbers are just curiosity, kinda
