could someone please enlighten me on how the 256+256 memory works in the x1600GPU, i want to buy a z96J mainly for audio applications (ableton live and serato scratch), does the GPU "borrow" memory off the main board when it has ran out of its own, do you think Audip apllications such as these would be taxing on a GPU at all?
    Serato scratch http://www.rane.com/jpg/scratchl.jpg
    Ableton Live http://www.museresearch.com/kvr/i/b/live.gif

Both programs have constantly redraw audio waveforms etc, and i'm just trying to find a good dedicated graphics card, possibly a nvidia??

Audio Applications will barely use the GPU, unlless, it has alot of visualizations and even then it will still barely use the GPU. :)

Yeah ekwipt, as stated above, the only way you'd use more than the dedicated 256MB of memory on this card is if you were running a 3D intensive (i.e. newer games or CAD) programs. With what you plan to run, you won't even come close to the extra 256MB of Hypermemory.

Got a bit of a problem here... sigh

I've got round to trying to OC my X1600. Except everytime I run 3DMark 05, 3DMark, or something else, makes the clocks 240 (something like that), which is even less than default (which is 420/370)! Why would this happen? I've only used latest omega's and ATI Tool

    Lappie running on AC

LFC, perhaps you are using a version of ATI Tool that is not comaptible with your rig? I had to experiment a little before I settled on a particular revision of the program. In others, I got wacky clock displays too.

Hi everybody, I just resolved to overclock a little bit my x1600, beacuse I found out that the GPU inside my laptop was a **** Hypermemory 128mb card, so its memory bus is set at 64 bit. Crappy, innit?
Now, Atitool (0.25 Beta 15) does not allow me to under/overclock freqs in any case. If I move the sliders and press "set" it just goes back to the values shown in the picture. Weird values, anyway, as you can see..
Does anybody had the same problem and/or knows how to fix it and unlock GPU's freqs?
I'd really appreciate that, if you would lend me a hand..

My notebook is a Packard Bell V7802d.

I'm using ATI Tool 0.25 Beta 14, as advised in the OC X1600 guide thread that's hidden in the forum archives. It seemingly sets teh clocks fine...except when I run 3DMark.

Did try 13+15, did not work

Which one? Could you post a link here please? Thx!
Anyway, I'm a little bit concerned about overheating, when I pump up the clock of my mobility..
It's default clock are 425 core & 378 ram, I brought them to 445/400, now, and it seems to be ok, with a 3dmark05 boost of 200 points.. I don't know if I want to push it further.. I think I need a cooling pad at least to overclock more..
But I can't find any temp monitor for my raddy, I'm beginning to think that the **** thing hasn't got a temp sensor.. :(

Can anyone confirm what kind of GPU there are in the Macbook Pros?

I know there are two kind of GPUs, the Mobile X1600 with 128MB and the one with 256MB..

I have read some of the info in this thread, but not all.

Someone told me that the Macbook Pro with 128MB on the X1600 has a 64 bit memorybandwidth, and the Macbook Pro with 256MB X1600 have 128 bit memorybandwidth.

There are different versions of ATI Tool.
Some work better than others for different cards.
I'm using .25 beta 14 which is not the latest but works best for me.
Some people also use a program called Powerstrip to overclock.
I like ATI Tool because it is basic and effective (for me).

I have Catalyst 6.12 drivers, latest version of ATT (1.2.6.964).
Downclocked to 172:171 at the minute for minimum heat and noise 0 that's the lowest I can go before it gets weird.
I haven't tried overclocking as my laptop gets hot enough when gaming anyway.
    Stock clocks are 450:450.
Haven't got any benchmarks at the minute but I'll post some numbers when I have some time.

    OK, if you're sure.
    I play BF2142 mainly, I don't have a lot of games.
I borrowed FEAR from a friend a month or two ago, and that was pretty good.
I have Quake 4 but I've not played it much yet, and I've ordered a load more games which should arrive soon.
BF2142 gets around 25-25fps, paying on medium settings, 1024x768 resolution, offline.
I'll post more fps if you want them when I've got some more games?

I can now report that with medium graphics settings and 1280x768 resolution, I get 60fps in Quake 4 when standing or moving, and around 35fps in combat. I also have high quality special effects on. Average of about 45 fps.
    I'm downloading 3DMark 06 now.

So we now know that the Mobility X1600 256mb in some Asus laptops use GDDR2 memory and not GDDR3.

People reporting higher than 420mhz or so clock speeds for memory on their X1600's most likely have GDDR3.

Im assuming you were talking about the X700, ATI's first generation of PCI Express Cards.

The X1600 and X1700 are ATI's first SM3.0 cards, basically the X1700 is based off the X1600 and just has higher clocks and can be found with a bit higher dedicated memory (512mb)

The X1600 on my Samsung X60 seems to be invincible. LOL

I run stable at Core 526 and Mem 520 - never crashes and I am running demanding 3D games with these clocks.

I can get as high as Core 540 and Mem 540 but its not as stable.

I just got an Asus Z96J a couple of days ago, and it shipped with 450/370. Should I overclock the memory any? I really do not want to fry my notebook or anything, so I am trying to be careful. What I would really like to know is if I could see a significant (10 FPS+) boost in performance with OCing, otherwise I'd rather not risk damaging my brand new baby :)

Hi chuck congrats on your purchase. The X1600 in my S96J can run stable at 500/400, with the memory topping out at around 420mhz before artifacts. My 3DMark05 went from 4000 to 4500, and I do notice a difference with gaming. Feel free to increase your mem speed 5 mhz at a time until it gets near 400, then decrease the amount you raise it at and check for artifacts after every change. I used ATI Tray Tools while others use ATI Tool, look around and decide which one you'd rather use.

OK, thanks. I downloaded the Omega drivers and it came with ATI Tray, so I guess ill use that. Is there any reason to pick one over the other, excepting preference?

Also, just for reference, what would a speed be that would fry the card? Just curious. Should I also raise the core speed as I am with the memory?

OK, and to make sure I understand correctly, the proper way to raise the speed is to do a bit at a time, until you start getting artifacts and then lower it back down a little bit until you don't get any more. Does doing this have any chance of frying my card? Could it possibly overheat if I run it at the higher speeds for too long? Thanks for helping.

OK, I overclocked to 499/418. I went to 519/430 with no artifacts (and could have gone higher), but I turned it back down because I got nervous about frying my card.

Could I go that high and not worry about overheating or frying?

It depends on your heat dissipating system. You should check your temperatures while on overclock. ;)

From what I have heard on these forums and also experienced for myself, the
X1600 seems to be a great overclocking card. Especially if it is equipped with the GDDR3 memory. A good diagnostic program like Everest will tell you everything you need to know about your hardware.

With that being said, and again....from my experience, one reaches a point of diminishing returns when continuing to raise the level of overclocking. I saw a noticeable return in performance with "moderate" OC's on my card but if I continued to go up the scale, the returns were less pronounced in relation to the rise in heat levels.

I know some people have been very successful with mad overclocks and that's great, but my recommendation for most users would be to find a nice bump in clock/mem speeds where you can get a nice performance boost but still be assured that no damage will be done to the card. I think people should use the clocks that work well for them and not try to reach for the sky just because someone else does.

I have been using ATI Tool and it works well for me but I don't use it all the time. Most of the time I just run stock speeds and the computer works well for almost every application that I throw at it. However, on those occassions that I want some extra FPS (F.E.A.R. immediately comes to mind), I'll bump my clocks up to 470/485 and things are smooth as butter with no drastic rise in temps. I have read elsewhere that mem bumps are more effective than core bumps but certainly a healthy balance of the two is important. Of course, YMMV with your particular card. BTW, I'm still running 6.7 Cats too! Until I see a proven radical performance increase with newer drivers, I'm staying with what has been proven reliable and stable for me. Once you get on that driver update merry-go-round, it's hard to get off. ;-)

    Just my 2 cents
