Your favorite video game music & soundtracks

Hey guys...this thread is all about your favorite video game music. Individual pieces, or overall soundtracks, orchestral compositions or 8-bit beeps and boops, whatever you like. Links are a plus, too.

I'll start off. This is the main theme from Medal of Honor: European Assault, a piece titled "Dogs of War", composed by Christopher Lennertz. I've always been a fan of the MoH soundtracks, but this particular piece stands out to me. It's one of the most beautifully orchestrated compositions I've ever heard, video game or not. People to whom I've played this tune and don't recognize it think it's from a huge budget film, and I definitely think it's of that caliber.

COD soundtracks are also pretty good. Hans Zimmer is a real good composer.

Yeah, Hans Zimmer did a great job with the MW2 soundtrack. I can't wait for it to be released on its own.

I'll also mention the Unreal Tournament 2004 soundtrack. It's all fairly ordinary-sounding upbeat electronic music with some electric guitar thrown in, but it fits the gameplay's frantic pacing and futuristic settings perfectly.

Sonic 3 has got to be my favorite music soundtrack, the man who made these songs is a genius.

Also people have done some pretty incredible remix's with the music. Yeah...I wish all video games had that much effort put into their soundtracks. I would love to storm Omaha Beach with that playing in the background, a crescendo coming to a peak as your transport's hatch drops...

 

For starters, I'll go with 3 songs from the soundtracks for my 3 favorite series. I'll try to think of some less well known ones later.

Some good choices there, Necromas. The Half-Life series music is generally awesome. Also, how do you get just the audio to embed like that?

 

I just changed the height to 25, so there's enough room for the bar but not the video (which is just a still image in all of em).

Portal - Still alive

 

MW2..halo...
madden 10 had a few songs that i like..

 

for those who have MW2, and want to enjoy the soundtracks:

prog files > Activision > Modern Warfare 2 > main

bunch of iw_xx.iwd files. use an archive explorer (7-zip, winrar, winzip) and look into the files from iw_10.iwd to iw_22.iwd (can't recall the exact range that contained the music files)

in the .iwd files should have one folder called "sound" and inside that should have a few, among them "music". extract those files which have the suffix "hz_xxxxxx" think hz stands for Hans Zimmer. other sound files are loops only. you will find 2 versions of each song, LR and LsRs. the LR type is more exciting, whereas the LsRs are dumbed down. i split them into 2 folders.

Same process for Modern Warfare (main> iw_11.iwd>sound>music), except that suffix is HGW (Harry Gregson-Williams)

Enjoy! btw, best soundtracks of COD6 are the Oilrig fight, Snowmobile chase, Endfight and af_ending_long version (IMO)

I quite like some of the songs from Crysis actually. I have First Light on my iPod.

MW2 also has some great songs, one of my favorites is the White House battle scene, it really seems to convey that sense of hopelessness and despair of a dying country that it represented.

One of all time favorite game songs is the song "Shockwave and Aftermath", from the original Modern Warfare, particularly the last half of that song. The harmony and different sounds blend in so well with each other.

 

This song is forever embedded in my head, along with the battle music from pokemon.

 

Chrono Cross - Yasunori Mitsuda

 

The most exiting soundtrack is the one pokemon blue and red had:
tum, tutu tum. tu, tutu tum. TA TA TAAAA! tara tata tataa!
You just knew, that you had a great adventure ahead of you everytime you heard that soundtrack.

That eminem song: till I collapse in that cod mw2 trailer is also awesome.

Currently i'm listhening to: kesha tik tok when playing cod4.

 

Definitely one of the best musics ever to grace a videogame. Brilliant tune, it really puts me in that "fragile peace" mood. Fits Tristram's fate perfectly.



To those that mention Sonic soundtracks: definitely had some of the best music of its time. Ristar's music was great, even better than Sonic IMO. For example stage 1-1 (the typical first-level easy grassy world), stage 2-1 (an underwater world) and especially stage 5-1 (an icy world -- I always whistle this tune when it snows). This last one is probably the nicest MIDI-like soundtrack ever. Now I'm feeling nostalgic... good thing I have Ristar on my Wii's Virtual Console




Other great tunes: C&C Red Alert's Hell March. No words can describe this music, IMO the best hardcore videogame music EVER. And the name is very well chosen too. Too bad the remaining soundtrack wasn't nearly as good.



Fallout 2's Raiders (also figures on Fallout 1). Picture this: you come from a peaceful village facing a water shortage and after some exploration arrive at a cutthroat place called "The Den". Why that name? After all, lots of children run around the town, some even bump into you and run away smiling. As you walk into a bar, you feel your pockets...

WHERE IS ALL MY MONEY?

You turn around and the little kids grin at you. Sure, you have a gun, but what are you going to do? Shoot them?

Welcome to The Den...



Warcraft II's Orc 2 music (the other W2 songs are great too, but this one is the best -- I love playing 12v12 Guild Wars battles with this theme on). I always picture a huge charge while listening to this tune.

 

All these references are FAIL.


None of them beat out the original Legend of Zelda.

That song was rerecorded for World of Warcraft. I think it's used once or twice ingame, but it's on the original game's soundtrack. The name has unfortunately slipped me

 

And, God, that Starfox song brings back memories.

 

I really like the music of the original 2D lemmings games, both on the Amiga and PC.

I can't believe no one has posted the world class musical orchestra of Sega games such as Panzer Dragoon and Nights into dreams! Man Sega was video game pioneers and had the science down of how to immerse the human senses.

The Sega Saturn had way more potential than the Sony Playstation as far as architecture, but developers were to lazy back then to learn how to code for parallel processing cpu's (which is how supercomputers are designed and is all the rage now with SLI configurations in PCs) so they made propaganda against it and pushed for the Playstation to dominate the market.

It's so sad that Sony made a monopoly with their partners and bankrupted THE BEST videogame company the world has ever known.

i have every final fantasy soundtrack and the various piano collections and spin offs. I also like other old school rpg games like chrono trigger or secet of mana.

One game I never played but I came across the soundtrack and its super awesome is Shin Contra its really energetic.

Dtwn, TA musical score was one of the best I've heard. Plus the music fitted perfectly with the mood and situation in the game. Damn, might have to pull out the old copy and have another play for old times sakes.

Hey, that's the same guy who composed the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion sountrack. Some good stuff on there.

 

I got bored of Oblivion just setting it up, so I didn't really get to try the music. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll go check it out.
