My old favorites were Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis, Civilisation 1 & 2, Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe, F-19 Stealth fighter, and Syndicate.
Oh and nice screenies Dreamer, those SF2 and Magic Carpet shots brought back some memories as well =) -
I played a lot of games on the old atari like: Dig dug, Phoenix, Commander, 50 in 1 games, Firefighter and many more.
Before the atari we even had a Vendex PC. That pc got 1mb of ram and 8Mb of harddisk. We played games like: Dave, accolade (racing game), Castle, paperboy, spiderman, kitten and more like that games.
Those were old games!!! (I'm only 19 years old, but i'm happy i had the option to play such old games!) -

Trucking for the Amstrad CPC464, by Cascade, 1985.
It ran off a tape.
With about 9 other games on the tape. -
Was that on the CPC 464? I had one of those, loads of old games I used to love on there. 'Harrier Attack', 'Roland on the Ropes', Roland in the Caves, Dizzy, Oh Mummy!...ah great days!
-

Yeah, I remember trying to get Harrier Attack to load, but it never would!
Pretty sure it was on the 464 although it was on a tape with a few other games, I forget how many.
Honestly I'm not sure it was a 464, but it was of that era and ran on tapes! -
Probably a 464, had a tape loader, here's a Wikipedia entry for it. I could never get Sultans Maze to load up on the tape driver, I remember once I left it load and came back in to find smoke coming out the back of the machine! Luckily the damage didn't seem to be permanent.
It was replaced with the CPC 6128, which had a floppy drive and 128K of memory. I remember thinking how techy I was with such a piece of equipment. -
Yeah, lotus was a great game, and Keen too. I played keen1, keen2 and keen4. Those were the days... Those were games i played a bit later than the atari games
-
I'm 19 now so at the start of my gaming maybe 10 years ago, the likes of Doom, Duke 3d and Quake were at least around....
Never really played the old classics, although I have played them since, many people will tell you that it ain't the same unless you play them at the actual time of release....
But nonetheless the favourite game of my childhood would definately have to be Space Quest, think it was V or VI... -
FrozenSolid Notebook Evangelist
Doom, Ultima (all of them), Karateka, and Elite ..... green wire frames in space but once you made your first cargo run you were hooked. Also Guardalcanal and any games by Gary Grigsby.
-
Ahem the Logical Journey of the Zoombini anyone?
When I was a kid i couldn't beat it... I destroyed it in 30 minutes at my cousins house
or treasure island, or Myst, or Oregon trail.. ahh it brings back the memories -
Dark Castle for Mac - Black and White Version. (searched the thread and didn't see it listed). At the time, one of the best graphic games out there.
That would be for the black and white 9" mac classic, with a big external hard drive that might have had like one current day digital image.
And let's not forget Paperboy! -
Tabletop D&D will always rule over PC games!!! Go Forgotten Realms!
-
Not the first one to mention it, but the orignal Westwood Studios Command & Conquer was amazing. Great story, excellent campaign play and the video transitions between campaigns were outstanding...like small movies.
Hell, they starred Jame Earl Jones & Michael Bien! I loved that game. EA has cheapened the series, IMO. -
I must say that C&C Generals has got to be one of the best RTS's out there as it gives you a sence of modern warfare and balance it with intuitive game play to create a well rounded strategic game! I was never really a big fan of starcraft or diablo, but i will say this; Armymen RTS will forever live in the hearts of the fun fast strategy gamers out there. It's about as imaginative as Dawn of War. Real time plastic green dudes flare each other out the sand box go hand to hand with alien invasion, galactic conquest, treachery and vile hardcore destruction. Man, there are some really good "classic" games out there...
ps. Street Fighter, Mario, Zelda and Megaman are too tight to pass up a play
-
It's really interesting to see the wide spectrum of games being mentioned as the "best old games" in terms of chronology.
How about the early racer "Turbo"? Had a little steering wheel & gas pedal on my ColecoVision for that one. -
30 yr old here.. the magic age that made you a kid at the explosion of the video game age.
Favorite old, old games - Missle command, BreakOut, GhostBusters, Original Mario Bros.,
The atari game where the prisoner in jail kept dropping the bombs and you had to catch them in the water thing... played it with the little twist-paddle controller..can't remember what it's called.
The Firefighter game for Atari
Moon Patrol - C64
Sierra's So you want to be a Hero series.. Hero's Quest, etc.
There was a great King Arthur game on PC then too, not sure if it was Sierra or not.
Indiana Jones games were all *great*.
Original Ultima games for C64
Original Hereo's of Might & Magic
One other that I played a bunch back in 8th or 9th grade (sooo...1988 or 1989 or so) was a BattleTech game that was probably the first RTS type game I ever played. I remember we played it on an Epson 80/86 with 128k of ram and a 10mb HDD. I don't remember to much about it other than you had a 3rd person view and moved units like an RTS but it was turn based. You had mechs, other vehicles etc & had to complete missions against opposing factions. Anyone remember this? Fun fun.
Many many many more that I can't think of at the moment.
The games that truly stole my life away for a while were Dark Age of Camelot and Counter-Strike. Played hundreds & hundreds of hours each.
Now I pretty much only game at work.. and off-line :-/
Being a responsible adult with babies takes gaming time away..... best argument for abstinence ever.
EDIT: Oh I just remembered...did anyone have the handheld football game where the players were just little red dots on the screen...and the ball was a red dot when you threw it.. lol, played through so many batteries on that thing. -
Please HELP!!!
I have a question that really bothers me! I just can't go to sleep nor eat...
I once had a graphical adventure game. It was somewhere between 1992 and 1997. I played it for a bit the lost the CD. Forgotten about it. Lived happily...
Recently it (this game) somehow arose from the furthest part of my mind AND I CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME of the game! PLEASE HELP!
I only remember how it starts. Here it is...
You play as a cat, a human like cat. You walk out of some kind of shed to the dark street with a beggar laying on the road. Walk past the club where you can't get in. You also can't cross the road because police will grab you. One of the first requisites you get is a ladle. You can work in a public canteen. Then you meet a poliman in an underground. You don't have enough money to go through...
Well, that's what I can remember. But the name. I desperately need it. I need it for the sake of my mind health.
If you played it some time please tell me the name of the game. THATNK YOU in advance. You will be my best friend (for some time). -
M.U.L.E. is definitely one of the classic old games. I still remember playing it on my Commodore 64.

The Amiga had some truly fantastic games, I'm almost tempted to buy an old one and a load of old games and get playing it again! I downloaded an Amiga Emulator earlier and am yet to try it
There were a few more great games:-
Xenon 2 :- http://youtube.com/watch?v=2w-tiRnac2k&feature=related
Lotus Turbo Challenge :- http://youtube.com/watch?v=YkZ4jJpleAQ
New Zealand Story :- http://youtube.com/watch?v=F6bSu8lrPYQ

Rainbow Islands :- http://youtube.com/watch?v=2UDVmKANSYc
Simcity :- http://youtube.com/watch?v=IzHVcvZw_7Q
-
my copy of rainbow islands died at level 16
new zealand story was cool. until i found the cheat. press alternate fire instead of normal fire to get unlimited ammo and then you just put it on auto fire
i still have my amiga somewhere, but i'm not sure if it works. -
I'm not sure how old you meant by old, but my favorite outdated games are Need For Speed 4: High Stakes (2000) and Quake III Arena (1999). NFS5: Porsche Unleashed (2002?) is also very good.
-
I never completed Rainbow Islands, my Kick Off 2 obsession put paid to that!!! Of all the football games I have every played not one comes close to how great that game was. That's the difference between games today and back then, the playability was so much better.
I hope your Amiga still works, I'm going to see if this emulator works, if it doesn't I might just buy an A1200 on eBay
By the way, here's the first game I ever played on the Amiga:-
Barbarian:- http://youtube.com/watch?v=C4Ii_YfJNvw
-
Original Prince Of Persia,Operation Wolf,Commander Keen,Ghouls & Ghosts,Megaman,Zelda...and the best ever
is MONKEY ISLAND! -
I never played Monkey Island, there's a Youtube vid of it though! http://youtube.com/watch?v=KFPFFZs5m_w
I also omitted to add Speedball 2 above. A shocking omission:- http://youtube.com/watch?v=T4s2IimFn-c
Ghouls and Ghosts, wow I haven't thought about that game in years! I loved the music from it (there isn't a decent vid of it on Youtube
)
Now talking super old school, does anyone remember Rescue on Fractalus on the C64?! :- http://youtube.com/watch?v=A8_-78G8D_I
22 years ago... Christ I'm getting old
-
Wow I can not believe no one mentioned the Infocom series
Zork was the bomb back then
Also:
Phantasie (first game I ever beat)
Wizards of Wor
Ultima IV
PONG
Pac Man
Tempest
Gunship
Pool of Radiance
Bards Tale II
Populous
Madden (very first one)
Tecmo Bowl
Mutant Football League
Civilization
Movie Mogul
Tia Pai
X-Com
Strip Poker (spent hours at this one trying to get those 2 girls nude)
Lode Runner
I could probably go on forever listing the good ones -
I'm still playing Total Annihilation.
It's one of the reasons why I probably won't be getting a Vista machine.
-
it does
i pulled out my game of north and south, its the only one i could find. bloody awesome, this is gouing to keep me off the new lanbox that i just got
-
I had a version for my PC...and then I upgraded my PC and everything moved so fast I could blink and I would've already been bicycle-kicked to death. Never even heard of the term fps-limit at that time
Castle of the Winds I and II...
Master of Magic...most annoying game ever to get to work on a computer (yay EMS memory)...but probably the game that I have the fondest memories of..
I'd say Civilization too, but I'm actually of the opinion that the series has gotten steadily better, so it's not like civ4 is old or anything.
Chronotrigger...
Secret of Mana...
Final Fantasy 7 (yes I still consider this old
)...
-
quazatron (managed to finish all 8 x 8 levels in one sitting, in front of the tv. ah, the foolishness of youth) & uridium.
run on zx spectrum. comes on audio cassette tapes.
-
My all time favorite -
DESCENT II
It was at the advent of the 3D graphics. I thought it was all a gimmick. I *LOVED* Descent 2, then bought into the hype with my first Monster 3D card and OMFG I was orgasmic.
Descent II (and for that matter Descent Freespace) were/are great games that IMHO have never been beaten in terms of fun and ingenuity. It was great fun building maps and getting my ass handed to me.
From ancient history, I do remember playing Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and loving it. Stupid text adventure, but for some reason they were intriguing. -
Freespace II was awesome too...
-
Hahaha excellent. I'm going to keep an eye out for a ROM for the emulator!
-
Can anyone recommend a decent joystick to work with an Amiga Emulator on my laptop?
-
Sim Earth, Mario world, Yoshi's Island, DK Country, OG Trail.

This is an old thread, but I'll leave it open since the information is already . . . old.
-
Sorry for bumping it up mate. I remember quite a few people had posted on it talking about OLD OLD games
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with some of the retro USB Joysticks (like the Competition Pro), I can't find any on sale online (even on eBay
.....)
-
Quake III Arena lol..
-
DarkColony :1995
-
I don't have personal experience, but here are two reviews for Competition Pro:
- http://play.tm/story/5150
Atleast to my knowledge Competition Pro is your only option. If you own old Amiga Joystick, you could also try to find some kind of adaptor. -
I agree XD
-
Ok, some games I grew up with:
Indiana Jones-Fate of Atlantis
Monkey Island (Part 3 is the best game ever)
Siedler 2 (I think it's called Settlers 2 in English)
Day of the Tentacle -
Duke Nukem!
-
definitely Duke Nukem
-
You the man! I still play Q3 on the net at times, when my net connection is not having hickup issues.
Among the best old games : STARCRAFT
-
LOL seriously? I play it VERY OFTEN, which type do you play? I play CTF..
What is your game name lol.. -
not sure about the adapter route. have been looking for one for 2 old amiga joysticks that i have but to no luck..........i think i will stick to playing those games on the amiga anyway. the graphics are a tad better
not that the graphics are that good to start with
Was playing james pond the other night
