The temps of the 880m can go as high as 79 degrees at the most with stock VBIOS.

Guys, the 2015 AW18 is short of ridiculous. There is absolutely no major upgrades at all other than the addition of maxwell gpus. No mention of sky lake making its way into it so as far as I am concerned, this is complete horse ****. They could have simply added the maxwell gpus to the already existing 2013 model instead of making a copy cat of it and slapping the maxwell gpus in it.

Depends a bit about what notebook you look at but I think there are scenarios where any notebook will creep up to 90C with 880M. Which is what OEMs need to validate and think about before selling notebooks with the hardware

NEW LEAK - 990M will actually be Nvidia's first Pascal card to show how great the architecture is. They will brag about how it's actually able to surpass top end desktops cards because of the shrink. It also explains how they can fit it in a notebook better. Plus it makes sense for it to be 16gb of VRAM.

Nvidia released it's first Maxwell GPU's in the 800 series. Full Maxwell wasn't until the 900 series.

Makes sense because gaming laptop sales keep going up at a faster rate than desktop cards. I guess Nvidia wants to take away the stigma of laptop GPUs being weak so it's going all out with this as a sample preview for what pascal can bring.

The 990M is not Pascal... It can't be. NVIDIA has gone on record stating Pascal is coming in 2016.

Well SLi gaming laptops are no joke regardless of config but generally the 780,880 and 980m in SLI combination offer really great performance but this bad boy right here is capable of obliterating all these gpus in sli and can keep up with the 980ti (although a bit less powerful). That's damn impressive but I wonder if it will actually end up being a thing like let's be real here, how many people are ready to shell 1600USD or 3200USD for these cards? The price is just too damn high. For that much, someone can get a quad sli 980ti rig coupled with the new skylake CPU.

I guess it's a "love it or hate it" thing. Personally I love the GT80 design. It feels like something out of Bladerunner, kinda retro futuristic (from the 80s as you mentioned). Unfortunately, it's way too massive for me to be lugging this thing around or using it on the in-flight tray table, etc.

moviemarketing, you have to try it at least once, just to say you did it ;)

You get to tell the SO that you need that First Class seating to fit your working environment - AC power and plenty of room to set up and be comfortably productive.

Or, colo the GT80 under the seat, and pull out the 12" Tablet - remote desktop in to the GT80. :)

Not as exciting as you are all thinking. I can't say if if it's GM200 or GM204......... I can only say that it is based on one of those two but you won't be amused. It is not what you think.

I've decided that I'm content with my 980M for now. It'll definitely be able to tide me over until Pascal. I've realised that, as much as I'd love to, I can't keep throwing money at every new soldered flasgship NVIDIA GPU with the income I have at the moment. An epiphany of sorts. I have accepted this fate. The 990M is not for me, but for all your sake's I hope that it's the most badass, beastliest laptop GPU possible :)

Hmm... Those are relatively contradictory I think. I doubt it's going to be 980m SLi speed levels, and damn that CEO of whatever company he was from for saying it, because I feel like that's always going to be the benchmark this will be judged by. Maybe he meant to say 970m's in SLi???

While it doesn't matter now, because we already have what we have, it's disappointing to see this card appear now, ( Nvidia introduces the GeForce GTX 950) because this should've been the 960m. (Spoiler, 6.6ghz mem clock, 768 shaders)

Etherem's latest comments should pretty much confirm earlier suspicions that 990M is simply a dual GM204 chip. Only remaining question is pretty much if it's 2x970M or 2x980M equivalent.

I didn't. But 970M SLI performs within 10%-15% of a single 980M in some games.

I've always thought the next GM204 mobile GPU would be a good 30% faster over the 980M.

You forgot that 1080p was held at artificially high prices die to collusion. Check out the antitrust case on the issue. It includes major tv manufacturers, Dell and hp. It worked until LG and Vizio jumped on the scene and undercut everyone! Had nothing to do with the video card manufacturers!!! :)

Why is everyone losing their minds on the 990m, first off the thread is just a huge speculation fest, Secondly, why can't we just enjoy one piece of hardware and upgrade when the time comes instead of upgrading yearly which that by itself results in a huge loss? This boggles my mind. I have dual gtx 880ms and they perform just fine, it certainly is enough for me to maxed out any games for years to come. The gtx 980m Sli being 25-40% faster than my 880ms should be future proof too so why need the gtx 990m? Plus it costs 1600USD, that's a **** ton of dosh my friends.
@D2 Ultima , could you build a GPU for me too :) like you would need tons of silicone to do that cause I want the GPU to be equal to 4 Titan x's :p

I have a single 880M and it actually works pretty well. A bit toasty though.

I do enjoy these speculation threads. We had similar things going on when 880M was coming out, same thing with the 900 series.

Let's try to keep it light folks.

The 880ms sure are toasty :) But all jokes aside, investing in technology always results in a huge loss more than anything. The day I got my 880ms is the same day where they became obsolete and the same applies to the 980m SLi, they are already obsolete. Continuously investing in technology is the best way to become broke, that's for sure. The 990m does boasts some incredible spec and I hope Alienware adds support for it so I can upgrade my 18 but to be honest I can't justify wasting 1600USD.

My son has an XPS 15 with a 640M. He has hinted more than once that when I buy a new laptop he would take my current one off my hands. :)

For me, buying decisions are based on needs first and wants second. I needed a new laptop for work because my old one only supported 8GB RAM. I wanted one with a top end video card.

Hardware enthusiasts tend to think differently, not necessarily rational or practical. In short, some people just geek out on hardware and everything around it. I guess it's just like that utter car maniac dismantling his engine yet again for full revision and oiling, does he need to ? No. Does he love it? Hell yes.
