I'm not surprised. The 180.xx series were designed to boost performance.

OK, did some benchmarking (yes, this late at night) on 179.28. And here be the results!
3DMark Vantage: From E5509 (GPU 5950) on 176.26 to E6607 (GPU 5920) on 179.28 with PhysX enabled. Without it, the score drops to E5436 (GPU 5908). Thankfully, I don't have any DX10 games, so make of that what you will.
3DMark06: From 3947 (SM2+SM3=3016) to 3989 (SM2+SM3=3065). I think I'll re-run it tomorrow without Nvidia Display Scaling on, so that the CPU tests only render at 640x480 instead of 640x480-scaled-to-1024x768.
3DMark05: From 6120 to 6167.
3DMark03: From 9123 to 9223.
I'll be updating my sig soon enough, and possibly removing 3DMark01 from it.
Oh, and overclocking is NOT possible with this driver if you're normally locked out. Sorry Acer users, but you're stuck with 169.04 if you want to OC anything more substantial than shaders.
Final word? When I switch over to 64-bit Vista, 179.28 will be the driver I use. And maybe then I'll break 4000 in 3DMark06... -
I may be missing something here but I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.
The planned release schedule virtually guarantees that they'll be outdated in comparison to the desktop drivers (as this first release already is) that install fine with a modified .inf and will inevitably include a raft of performance increases due to a more regular release schedule (again as they already do).
Unless there's some secret hidden pixie dust I think I'll stick with the desktop drivers. :x -

Some of use need whql signed drivers for stuff like blu ray playback. So this is good news for us -
When you use 167 you jump at the first new WHQL out there

hi
well ive done some tests on my own, my system is a clevo m860tu with t9400 2.53, 2gb ram, 9800m gts.
tests with dox 180.84 3d mark 06 9438, which i was happy with, and i ran benchmark for farcry 2 with res on 1680x1050 all very high settings and averaged 31 frames. So not a bad result. The temps stayed around 78c.
But i noticed the new nvidia drivers 179.28 designed for the mobile graphics card was released, so i thought i would give it ago. ANd the tests where interesting.
3d mark06 i got 9510 so i little increase which was interesting, but on the farcry 2 tests i averaged 30 frames with the same settings, so i got a higher 3d mark but not as good on farcry2, so it was hard for me to choose which driver to use.
Then i remembered what about overclocking, ive never been able to overclock my system, with rivatuner or ntune, but as these where offical drivers from nvidia i would try ntune again, and it works. YAY!!!
first i tried a few tests changing the clocks quite small then hitting the test button and it was testing ok, i also hit the optimal button, i suppose it finds the optimal speeds for my card, the default speeds are, core 600, memory 799, shader 1500, once i click find optimal it went stupidly high, like 900 core, 1075 memory, and 1900 shader, but i didnt want to fry my laptop, so i changed it to 700 core, 900 memory, 1700 shader and ran the tests again while keeping a eye on temps, as i dont have any sort of notebook cooler. these are the results i got.
3dmarks 06 10161 temps 80c
farcry 2, 33 frames
conclusion, well i think im going to keep the nvidia 179.28 drivers only because i can overclock, but its clear to see that dox drivers are more optimized for better game performance, if dox could do the same for these drivers then we could have some interesting results with the ability to overclock. -
I installed the new direct nvidia drivers replacing Dox's. I really don't don't see any major gains or disadvantages. So i guess i'm going to stick with the new drivers for now.
HP Pavilion DV7 9600m GT vista 32
I'm still able to overclock with riva tuner. I only do this on a temporary basis when I'm going to play a game.
Also of note I saw the comments about Ntune and these new drivers so i tried installing it. As soon as i double clicked on Ntune my computer froze. I rebooted tried again, same thing. so i uninstalled it. -
-
Ntune blue screens on Vista x64.
-
ntune, blue screen here too. i also had rivatuner, which actually gives me the choice to over clock now with the new driver, but it doesn't read the clock correctly and when i apply changes nothing happens, atleast we're getting somewhere now.
i gain atleast 200 points in 3dmark06 with the nvidia mobile driver though. -

-
I haven't tried 6.02 with this driver, but 6.03 is, yes.
-
nTune works fine on my x64 vista. Although I overclock the FSB and it gives much better results than a gpu overclock.
-
I'll stick with dox's till i hear any real benefit for 9800's from these drivers and i use nvidia system tool 6.03 just fine for overclocking on vista 64... 6.02 worked fine for that matter too...
It's pretty sweet to finally get some official laptop support though =) -
These 179.28 drivers seem really nice. Good 3dmark score and good HD playback performance. Everything works as it should and the temps appear to be a little lower in comparison to the 180.xx drivers - which is always nice.
By the way; I found out I didn't have the latest M1530 bios: version A12. You guys might wanna update it well -
Hopefully it will support Thinkpad Quadro NVS GPUs in the next version
-
i think i'll stick with doxes drivers
-
I'm really split as to whether I should continue with my optimised drivers now.
Nvidia is making offiical releases for you guys and thats really good.
You'll get max compatibility and performance.
No need for me now really.
I could optimise the official releases but thats only 3 months every release and to achieve/maintain max functionality for every laptop user would mean ALOT of time due to the way nvidia has done things on this on 179.28.
Plus I'd need to get the sub id for each card and each card and its sub id has different OEM settings which I would need to compile... bla bla bla [boring stuff]. -
DOX its kool if you dont want to do it anymore. But we will miss your drivers man.
I think i will never find a better driver that 180.70. They are great.
Thanks for all the drivers DOX. Hope you still make your drivers we would really appreciate it. -
NVidia hasn't released any drivers for pre-8XXX series mobile cards, so without your site, people like me are S.O.L. if a game comes out that needs updated drivers. -
Community needs you, DOX. look how many people are using your drivers and are happy, including yours truly
Don't give up on us
We all appreciate your help!
-
If DOX does'nt have motivation like he says he does. Then i guess there's no use pushing him.
(Come on dox. <<<>>><<<>>< WE NEEED YOUUUUUUUUU>>>><<<<<<>>><<<<>>>><<) -
I know it's not the best benchmark, but I installed the nVidia drivers on Vista 32 bit (179 is so much better than 167) and my WEI for graphics went from 3.1 to 3.4.
-
I have to say I am really surprised at the performance increase after trying these new drivers.
I really hope Dox does not just stop doing his versions though. I hope he can work out some way of optimising these releases for the most popular ones or something. -
Too bad they still miss some mobile card compatibility ...
Lg r700 - msi8600m gtdriver fails to find compatible hardware.
-
I haven't tried the nvidia drivers yet, just finished downloading them as i'm typing this, but hopefully now there won't be a downclocking issue gaming on battery.
Does anyone that already installed the 179.28 drivers have a downclocking issue or loss of framerate when gaming on just battery?
I loved Dox's 178.24 custom driver because of the fact that it didn't downclock, and maybe now, if these nvidia notebook drivers have remedied that problem, Dox can use that information to customize the desktop ones, if at all possible.
Dox thanks for your hardwork. Nvidia should take you under their wing. -
i dono why, i can't overclock with these drivers using rivatuner. nebody have any suggestions?
-
Is this or 181.00 better?
-
i read 181 is not very good so ya
-
Dox,
Thanks for all your driver mods which worked well on my HDX 9300 with 8800M GTS graphic card, especially 180.70.
But now that Nvidia is making official releases for Notebooks every 3 months, I'll be using these drivers of which their first release (179.28) has produced good performance, stability and compatibility.
Again thanks! -

Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
i updated and ive noticed some substantial difference first off my 3d mark score went up quite a bit actually by about 500 points and i also noticed the colors and so on my notebooks monitor look alot more accurate now.
I think it has made a huge difference. -
Thank you N-TUNE. BSOD whilst burning a DVD. Nice one. This piece of crap does not work for x64 Vista.
-
After using MANY drivers for lv2g (including all dox releases), these 179.28's from NVIDIA just totally blow everything out the water.
I literally went from playing LOTRO from Low ~29fps to 60+. High went from 18-22 to 28-34.
These are excellent drivers.
And I still give thanks to DOX, becaues those are good drivers as well. -
still waiting for my support
-
!
I loaded these drivers last night on my x305 q701 and I gained 300 points on 3dm6! Not only that, now I don't lose any framerates while gaming on battery!
These drivers are the Shiiiiiiiiiieeeeet!
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
....if you are excited why are you giving a sad face? lol yes just like you i saw a 500 point increase
-
Exciting stuff...
This is the first time I had to upgrade my drivers because of GTAIV. Up until now I was using the stock 167 that originally came with the laptop.
So after lots of reading I went for DOX's latest driver release.
(Thanks dude! Works a treat...)
But now, after coming across this thread, I'm just wondering if anyone has tried GTAIV with these latest official laptop drivers from Nvidia.
Any performance issues like missing textures? Or is it the same ole story. If thats the case, then I will stick with the magic release from DOX.
Cheers guys!. -
1. they have an optimization for that particular game
2. you didnt install/uninstall them correcly, causing issues.
Lets face it, the difference in frames-per-second between these drivers and ANY other driver is probably ~1-4 fps. What you have to do is find a set that makes the game YOU are playing 'feel' smoother.
To say u went from 29 fps to 60 with these drivers means you were doing something wrong before, their just isnt that much of a performance increase in drivers, unless stated by nvidia for a particular game, ie lost planet dx10 and the 180 series drivers (80%). -
(sorry my english)
as i posted in 'sager clevo threards' i repeat here some test with drivers:
NO GPU overclock (its by defect). 9800M GTX, ID 0806.
GTA IV :
1440X900
High
The Highest
42
70
100
8
Fraps: 13 hour, day; running bench in GTA4 game 3 min. Average fps.
Crysis:
1900x1200
Quality: high or very high (CCC L4)
Directx 10
64bits
Temps:
Max temp playing Crysis game 15 min.
notes:
179.28 has PhisyX 8.09.04.
180.48 has PhisyX 8.10.13.
180.84 has PhisyX 8.10.13.
181.00 has PhisyX ?.??.??.
(to install 179.28 original nvidia driver I need the file inf from laptopvideo2go, becouse the driver does not support my GPU)
the 179.28 gets better score on the 3Dmark06 (+ 150 points), but fps are very very similars.
also, my feeling is that the 180.84 runs games a little more smoothly. and max temps are the same.
so my conclusion is that I prefer the 180.84. and I am not going to make (software) overclock by now
i hope that it helps.
greetings. -
and I thought I'd have to wait for toshiba's next vid release but this is God sent.
No. in my experience with my x205 last year in 2007 when I installed my first laptopvid2go driver 174.13 I believe to my stock 169.xx my framerate in cod4 jumped around that much (30+ fps). With the stock drivers I could only play in custom high medium settings with no aa and at 1200x800 to get a steady 30 fps on some single player levels. then with the newer released drivers, I could max out my graphics settings with aa enabled at 1440x900 and it held at a constant 30+ fps just because the drivers tapped more power.
Although this driver does increase fps it's not at that much of an increase, but this is just the first release hopefully the next ones will tap even more power.
One last thing I recommend that most people after installing the nvidia mobile drivers disable the physx this should increase your framerate even more, unless you have sli that takes advantage of the extra processor. -
Meh... Just tried out 177.29 nvidia mobile, wouldn't let me play Fallout 3 @ 1440x900, oh well. Knew it was too good to be true.
(Says my monitor doesn't support that resolution >.>)
Back to good old 177.79 from Lv2go -
I get BSOD whenever I accept the license agreement to access NTUNE. Don't you love NVIDIA and Vista x64?
-
Edit: Oh yeah and everyone who posts an increase in FPS/benchmarks, could you please post previous drivers... of course there is going to be a huge improvement from 16*.** but is there when going from 180.84?
Thanks! -
btw 179.28 only allow me to run 3dmark06 at 1280x720 all other drivers allow me to run at 1280x768 so maybe thats why am seeing such an increase in 3d mark score... I gotta play some games and get some real fps numbers and figure out the gain.
-btw its only the free version of 3dmark06 so dont tell me i can change the res cuz you cant in the free version. -
.
-
Has anyone had any luck installing the official 179.28 drivers in a m15x? I can't seem to get them to work.
I've tried both uninstalling the 175.80 AW driver completely, and then installing the 179.28 Nvidia Driver, as well as going directly to 179.28 from 175.80.
Both scenarios have the same result:
The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.
Anyone have any ideas? -
yes download the modded inf from laptopvideo2go.com
