Yes we could down resolution, but this will affect the the graphics quality, making it a little blur , 1920x1200 to 1280x1024 is a grat down i think, hope i wrong about that quality loss

I play all my games currently at 1920x1200(upgraded wuxga screen+t9300) on my laptop and for the most part i have good framerates throughout all my games and have a mega****ton of games , its not the same frame rates im getting on my 1920x1080 [email protected] 8800gtx desktop obviously but very playable and even crysis with most things set to medium and textures on high its a very playable 30fps. this new machine will be clocked higher then the current 6860 so its only going to run faster . as soon as my new 180w PS shows up im going to Overclock the snot of my laptop cause both my power supplys keep crapping out on me when i OC the machine just shuts off the screen locks .

Ya man i had to make the jump to a new screen because the original wasnt to bad interms of brightness and color but the viewing angles on my screen made me nuts not to mention i had a few xps laptops before this and always had the wuxga so i missed that real sharp screen , but it was mainly the viewing angles that drove me over the edge.

theres the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=4&ps=42 to the screen i got and mine is a matte screen and i couldnt be happier with it i always had glossy and when i ordered this i thought it was going to be glossy but this thing has color and brightness with 0 glare and its so easy on the eyes words cant express how nice it is.

ORLY? I was kinda steering away from matte screens due to the "sparkle factor", but you say this one looks beautimous huh? Do the colors still "pop" as they do on a reflective coating?

Was it listed as back ordered on the best buy site from the moment it was listed since they're not shipping yet or did it just sell out in a matter of hours in the morning.

So anybody have an idea which is the better deal? the Gateway P-173XL FX from tiger direct (for $1,629.99) or this one from best buy? The one from best buy has the faster DDR3 Ram, 9800 GTS video card, and faster hard drive, while the XL has a faster CPU, 2 Hard drives in RAID 0, and Windows® Vista™ Ultimate...

Right now I'm leaning towards the XL just because I can get it now... I tried doing the math; P-7811FX will cost about $1,570 (in NYC where I'm from) and the P-173XL FX will be about $1,646 from tiger direct (no tax, just shipping). Not sure what to do... I guess what it boils down to is which one is better for gaming?

Both are quite capable, but if it were me, I'd be patient and wait a few days for the 7811. You're getting better resolution, a better and cooler running processor, a cooler running vid card and a cheaper price.

They do, but most people see 173 and confuse it with the 173x-fx instead of the 173XL-fx.

We just about all do it so its a pretty common mistake

The 173 has an e-SATA port, Bluetooth and two hard drives.

It depends on what you want. Do you want more connections and capabilities (173) over performance (7811)?

    That's the only difference.

I was reading through the thread and made it through 34 pages before I couldn't read anymore. But I did have some questions.

A lot of people talked about a possible sale soon after launch? What are the chances of BB putting this P-7811FX on sale in September?

I read in some places that the HDMI port on this rig was 1.2, but the scan posted by one the members here that works at BB says it's 1.3. So.. is it 1.3?

I also heard somewhere in another thread about another model that Vista was the required OS for that other model to recognize all 4GB of RAM. Is that universal? If I install WindowsXP on this, will it not see 4GB? That would suck because I really dislike Vista...

More accurately speaking, it requires a 64 bit OS to recognize 4GB. A 32 bit OS will only "see" 3-3.5 GB. 64 bit XP and Vista are both available. However, the machine comes with the option of 32/64 bit OS, with 64 already installed.

Not completely sure about HDMI. BB putting it on sale is fairly decent chance. The FX series tends to go on sale every 2 months or so.

Whoops! I pulled one of those! LOL. But everything else I said still pertains. :) And thanks for the backup, Kamin. :)

I'm quite sure the 7811FX has an esata port. A second hard drive can be installed if desired as well, at an additional cost, of course.

    Thanks for the quick response!

I think I'll trust the BB scan for now, and perhaps go there August14 to check it out for myself just in case.

So it is possible for me to purchase a Windows XP 64-bit edition and install that on this laptop?

As for "fairly decent" +/- 50%? And if it did go on sale, it would be within a couple months of launch?

If you're going to give it a time frame of several months, I'd upgrade that fairly decent chance to certainty (based on previous BB treatment of the FX series, that is).

You can install any operating system you want. You just have to make sure the drivers are compatible.

Regarding the sale, Chase (who leaked the information regarding the 7811) said that it might be possible that Best Buy will put it on sale during its first week on shelves.

First rule: Never pay attention to Best Buys specifications. The 7811 is using the same casing as the 68xx series. I almost guarantee it has one. If it comes out and it doesnt have one, ill be highly shocked and will be more than happy to give you an apology.

EDIT: It shows it having one in the pictures, but they could have very well just re-used the 68xx pictures.

Well, if I ignore your first rule, the scanned BB specs do list an e-SATA port. I'm looking at it right now :D

Thanks for all the help guys. I look forward to this new release :)

Hm, according to tiger direct, they both got the same Maximum Resolution: 1920 x 1200. I thought the T9300 was a better CPU than the P8400? I didn't know that it's hotter. I guess I will wait then.

Anyone also look at the ASUS M50 Series M50Vm-B2 15.4" Wide SXGA+ 4GB Memory DDR2 800 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS for $1,549.99 (is on Newegg) How good is Asus? The specs look decent for a laptop at this price.

Did they just recently change the HDMI port to 1.3 or did I miss it earlier?

But my real question: it says it has home premium with SP1 preloaded... does it come with the CD? I'm asking because I wish it didn't have it preloaded, I want to install Ultimate instead, in which case I would want to sell off the home premium...

Also, does this mean everytime I reformat it will reinstall home premium?

As noted earlier, I made the common mistake and misread the 173 FX instead of the 173XL FX. That was my bad on the resolution. And neither of those come with a T9300.

It includes a Gateway restore DVD, which is a bare Vista Premium CD, however you cannot legally re-sell an OEM license. It must stay with that machine.

The XL comes with the T8300. The T8300 should perform around the same level as the P8400, and slightly above the T7500 in the 173X. The main difference is that the P8400 also comes with the new chipset, allowing it to use newer chips, while the 173X is limited to the X9000 at best. This is of course if you wish to upgrade. In most cases, you probably wouldn't notice the difference. The P8400 is cooler as it has a lower TDP.

I was wondering when someone would bring that up.

The M50 isn't bad, but the 9600M GS is substantially weaker than the 8800M or 9800M GTS.

It meens the laptop already has home premium installed with SP1
it should come with the oem cd, which is basically the home premium with sp1 incase you want to reformat or something. And laptops are usualy sold with an OS installed already, so if i where you just buy it, reformat and install ultimate. The home premium is included in the price so i dont think you can knock it off.

edit: for example i bought my pc a year ago and i also bought the XP with it, and when they sent me the finished product it included the cd key for XP and the cd for xp. ive reformated once since i bought it (and it was my first time) and it went pretty easily. so if your dead set on putting ultimate on it, then go ahead it wont be dificult.

ps: this laptop is better then my 1 yr old pc, and its cheaper too... :)

Hey all, I've been watching the threads on the new 7811FX and am quite interested. For the price point, it should be a better value than the Qosmio X305 I recently returned. I'm anxiously watching the BB site, waiting for it to available locally. Now, in the mean time I've been doing a bit of browsing and looking to see if another mid-range gaming rig was on the way.. Does anyone have any insight? Is there anything that provides the same value as the FX with a similar cost?

Oh, and on a side note.. Gateway recently added a second version of the 7811FX to their support site. The Gateway P-7812j FX Notebook. What the heck is this, Japanese model?

    Specs:

A model designed to be distributed to the Japanese market. They do studies and determine what features people want the most in different areas and on the strength of those studies equip machines properly.

theres a thread about this already started last night....

it also adds bluetooth (and its 2.1 whereas you normally see 2.0)

a few people were upset because while there is an american version (we think), the japanese version has a better processor
