Ya. It kills me how people just spout off BS, knowing fully well they have absolutely NO idea wtf they are talking about. Especially salespeople. Watch QVC sometime for instance.

I just ordered a P-173xl FX for $1629 from tiger direct.

    Specs:

    2.4Ghz
    4GB DDR2 ram
    8800GTS
    400GB 7200RPM HDD (2-200's in raid-0 config)
    17" 1080p screen

I noticed that the P-7811FX is only 2.23 and 200GB, but it has a 9800GTS and P45 chipset which is DDR3 capable. I basically want the best Gateway laptop available. Is the 7811 better? Should I cancel my order and switch to it? It would be nice to save some money but I care more about which is faster (gaming is priority). Also, is the 7811fx better than the 173xl fx in any other ways?

The 9800GTS is pretty much equal in performance to the 8800m gts and there is very little advantage to DDR3 as of now. I would keep what you have. This, of course, is just one mans opinion.

Won't the 7811 put out less heat though? Considering the heat that gaming laptops crank this would be an important factor for me at least.

Indeed it will, as it'll be Centrino 2. However, its not like the current breed are scorchers. Right now, mine is idling at 38C and never goes above 50C. My GPU never goes above 65C.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm CERTAINLY not trying to talk you out of getting what you want, I just try to give facts both ways. The 7811 is going to be one nice machine for sure. But so is the one you ordered.

Hey I'm a new member, read the entire thread but still have a few questions.

    1. Will it ship at the same time to Canada? I imagine so, but everyone here is saying the're in the US so I'm concerned a bit because...

    2. I'm leaving my home for university on the 30th, and I want to get this laptop before I leave because my desktop will be too awkward, especially with having to move around so much on campus and during holidays.

    3. Can anyone tell if it has an Ethernet port? From what I can tell it doesn't, which is also an issue as residence on campus connects to the internet via Ethernet cable, and does not have wireless I believe (not that wireless is good for gaming online or anything :p). I've been thinking about a USB Ethernet adapter, but I'm not sure how that will affect the speed.

    4. The 7811 is only available via Best Buy right? Gateway doesn't sell direct over the internet or neither does Best Buy?

I think that's all for now, thanks in advance :)

I'm in Toronto area and I'm going over the border when it comes out, it's not a long drive, u get it on the spot and u don't have to pay for shippin. Unless u'r way north and it's a long drive for u then I understand, easier to buy and ship.
    Look what suits u best...

Haha, I already swapped it out for a T9300 and added new TIM, temps moved to 32c idle and 62c load. I'm just wondering what other people had with it out of the box since mine ran so hot.

the sky is the limit :)

[email protected] around 85 (torture runs), usually during long gaming around 80

i did UV but not any more, something about that RMclock, dont trust it, i just set my own power setting in vista (max min cpu) and use different setting as i see fit.

if i open cpuz & everst pro and watch my cpu core vlotage, i see change as i switch between power modes but no change at all when using rmclock, not to mention that rmclock monitor is a mass collection of bull****, it seems to get everything wrong beside the temps.

anyway maybe its just my cpu and rmclock dont like each other, couldnt care less.

I would agree, but check out: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

It states that the 9800M GTS is better than the 8800M GTX! A possibility or just someones hopeful dreams? And wouldn't the mere 64 shader pipelines limit it quite a lot, especially against the 8800M GTX which has 96? The only other difference is that the 9800M GTS core may be clocked 100hZ more?

Though these figures might just be someones idea of a good dream, considering the 9800M GT is stated to be clocked at a lower core than the GTS, and yet is more powerful.

the 3dmark score is based on 1 test, you dont know what cpu or resolution.
it is as reliable as my rmclock voltage readings :D

try google 9800m gts reviews, hint there are none

Lol yeah I was kinda thinking that the results weren't too accurate. After more digging it seems as though the 9800M GT is nigh-on identical to the 8800M GTX, meaning that the 9800M GTX is a bit of a beast, though a bit of oveclocking on the GT would get performance quite a bit closer to the GTX I reckon.

Still, looking at preliminary tests though, there seems to be little difference between all 3 versions of the 9800M range: http://www.notebookcheck.net/typo3temp/pics/170f0ef96e.gif

Seems like the GTS could be the best value for money, hopefully the "mere" 512MB of video memory and 64 shader pipelines wouldn't hinder it too much, still those performance figures are still too good to be true.

Theres definitely going to be a performance hit, but the 9800gts is pretty strong and should be able to plow right thorough most(exception: Crysis of course) hi-res situations with ease. Plus the user can downres if desired as well, albeit giving up some resolution in the process.

Its funny because i bought my computer a year ago, and it has the 8800 gts and it could run crysis on normal everything and max res (for me, which was 1440*900) pretty well.
im looking forward to this lappy so i can play crysis again a little smoother :p

Thanks for the info chase! and please post when you get any info on it :) thanks

edit: however chase, i was bored so i looked through various cities for the quantities in stock, and i couldnt find any city that had the p-7811 in stock at any location, so they are probably just getting ready for launch and pre-orders.

maybe someone could order one and see what date it will be arriving? :p
