I highly doubt there will be a student discount, but it might go on sale. We might even see it as low as 999 (i believe). Alot of stores still have them, and the closer we get to the new 7811, the stores want the 6860 out that much more. So yea, we might. I'm not sure at what price though. -
Again, everyone is mislead by this HD. It is a 200Gb 7200RPM, correct? Our current 320Gb out-performs it, so that is a downgrade is HD.
Of course, the screen res does look nice... -
Just curious, but how does out 5400 out perform the 7200? I'm trying to learn here, not piss anyone off.
-
Google is your friend. Burned out on explaining this.
A 320Gb 5400RPM HD will out-perform a 200Gb 7200RPM HD. Now, if both were the same size, the 7200RPM would perform best. The problem is, for the same price as a 200Gb 7200RPM HD, you can get a 320Gb 5400RPM, which provides 120Gb more space, and the same speeds.
Here are benchmarks. -
Interesting...
Now what kind of jump in performance would I see if I dropped in 2x200GB 7200RPM drives in Raid0? -
If you look at the link you posted, you will notice that
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=260839
It really depends on which brand of 5400 and 7200 you're comparing. The Hitachi 7k200 outperforms most 320 GB 5400 RPM to some degree or another at the cost of almost 40% in reduction of space. However, I doubt Gateway's including the 7k200 in the 7811FX. Plus, I do prefer the larger HDD over the faster HDD. I'm just pointing out that it's not always true that a larger and slower drive will provide better performance than a smaller faster drive. -
That is a good point, and I meant to say WD 320Gb. My mistake, and I admit it. Now, as far as I know, the FX series comes with a WD 320Gb... but I could be wrong.
*EDIT* Looked into it a little more on Toms Hardware. He notes that in almost every situation, the 320Gb will out perform the 200Gb 7200RPM, aside from "Random Searches", where the 7200RPM slightly out-performs it. -
I know this is off topic, but how do I increase my rep power?
-
-
Rep is in the power of the giver. -
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/...r-performance,687.html?p=1891,1917,2025,1888,
http://www.storagereview.com/Hitachi250WD320.sr?page=0,3
Now whether or not this mild performance boost is worth it is personal opinion. With the WD drive, you actually get performance around that of a 7200 200GB drive, which makes it one of the better choices for a 320GB out in the market. There will always be those who want the faster drive for the extra speed, and there will be those who value price per gb over speed.
Rep Power is based on a formula that calculates how long you've been on the site and the number of posts you have. I have no clue what it is. -
Hmm, good job Dtwn83! Looks like they are comparable in most cases, if not all. Again, I would go for the 320Gb, but just my opinion.
Now, if it came between 320Gb 7k200, or 320Gb 5400RPM, for sure the 7k2. -
-
As for the 7k320 vs 7k200 vs WD 320, it would have to depend largely on price/performance factor. Last I checked, the 7k320 was about $100 more than the 7k200, which in itself is more expensive than the WD320. Don't forget that 2.5 500 GB drives are now available too. That will be a factor as well.
Have there been any problems with your Dell? Not that I expect any. -
What drivers have you guys had the best overall performance with in reference to graphics?
-
I'm using stock as my last attempt to update drivers caused a BSOD. -
Chase, will the laptop be available online too the day it launches?
Would Best Buy put a brand new laptop on sale in the first few weeks of a launch? -
I've been having some bad luck. -
Chase, Words can not express how glad I am you posted this. I've been researching laptops hardcore for the past week or so now that I've got some money. I want to get the absolute most powerful Gaming Notebook I can for around $1,500. I was eyeing up the Gateway P-6860 FX before, but now I'm going to hold out for the refresh.
I'm confused about one thing though... Do you know what CPU exactly is in this one?The reason I havent bought the old model was the relatively weak CPU. For 100 more, this model looks fantastic and just what Im looking for.
This is awesome. Thank you.
Do you think you could PM me as soon as you've seen a shipment in?
I would really appreciate it. -
Anywhere near cypress/houston, texas?
The 7811 will ship with the Centrino2, I believe the P8400 that clocks around 2.2 or 2.4. -

I'm in Wisconsin.
I live within 5 miles of a Best Buy too. -
This looks like an awesome laptop! I'm actually a little surprised with the resolution... doesn't seem like a very mainstream resolution to be putting out there, I would have expected maybe 1680x1050, but oh well... Maybe I can give this laptop to the wife and buy this new one eventually when it goes on sale
-
I plan to guy a Gateway laptop soon (by august, ironically it fits the time this laptop will arrive). Anyways, I'm quite interested in 6860FX laptop in Best Buy, but now I'm reading about this laptop which the only "bad" feature of it is the HDD. I have a external 300GB HDD, so space is not a big problem for me, now a question if someone is nice enough to answer:
Which laptop will be better worth buying, 6860FX or this 7811FX for my needs? Which are mainly gaming and video edition. -

-
i have a friend work at BB, i am gonna have her to hold one down for me if they do $699 or below.
-
I'll wait till mid September to buy the laptop. By then, there would be a sale or so to get it at even a better price.
-
-
What CPU does the laptop have?

yeah 0.4gHz faster with a faster FSB, it should make the machine feel very "snappy" compared to the 6860 right out of the box. The biggest problem there is it will be quite a while before anyone tries to put the big dog CPU's in this one... i think i remember the price tag even for the low grade ones was near 1K (though discounts for bulk purchase of course)
I'm still a little leary about ddr3, but i suppose its always easier to adopt new tech earily than to try to back track to catch up -
I eagerly await any snippets of info on this rig. If anyone finds Anything please post it here. I'm googling it every half hour. XD

I think we're going to have to wait until Chase gets back from work with the actual data sheet to find out anymore for the next week or two. (just a guess)
But hopefully we'll find out its full specs soon enough -
Good luck to those trying to get a 6860 on clearance--it'll be very YMMV. When I went to my local BB to pick up my 6860 at $1099, they still had some 6831s in stock listed at $1350.
-
Haha, Yeah. My Anticipation for this notebook borders on Obsession.
I hope he remembers to bring back a spec sheet today...
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned anywhere else though. Wouldn't you think at least one major Hardware Reviewer would have mentioned it by now?
I also want to know if it looks different from the current 6860, but I doubt the spec sheets have pics... -
Ok let me get this straight. The new FX will have 1920x1200 res, 4gb DDR3 ram, 7200 rpm, 9800GT, 2.23GHz mont. CPU all for 1400?????
That really sucks for me. -
-
Please let there be no error in specs, Please.
I wonder how the battery life will compare to the old model... It's got a new Montevina chip, so the CPU should consume less or the same amount of power and the GPU is essentially an upgraded 8800m GTS...
Does anyone know if the 9800m is more power efficient than the 8800m?
I would assume so, but I have no idea.
Edit:
T5550: 1.83 GHz 667 MHz 65 nm 2 MB Cache
P8400: 2.26 GHz 1066 MHz 45 nm 3 MB Cache
I guess the T5550 had a 35 Watt TDP, and the new CPU has a 25 Watt TDP.
Yay! -
-
9800 GTS, it has less stream processors the the 9800 GT. GTS has 64 and the GT has 96 I believe.
Still, an AMAZING laptop for under $1500. -

Oh... Snap... I just looked up Power Consumption on the 9800m GTS, and it says here its 75 Watts compared to the 8800m GTS at 35 Watts!
Nooooooooooooooo!
http://www.notebookcheck.com/NVIDIA-GeForce-9800M-GTS.9893.0.html 9800
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-8800M-GTS.6934.0.html 8800
Please let there be something wrong with this sheet!
Or please let me be misunderstanding something! -
They also say that 8800m GTX SLI is 35 watt
-
so have a 6860 I ordered online coming Monday. As long as the specs for the 7811FX hold up, I'm probably gonna return it. Unless I can talk them into giving me a discount on something they are probably going to clearance out anyway.
6860 Replacement due within 3-4 weeks
