Very true. The HDX does have ALOT of potential and when I first looked at it I was very dissapointed when a lower high end card was the max GPU offered. But then again I look to the XPS 2010 and realize that the 2010 and HDX werent designed for gamers, rather as media PCs. The day they offer powerful SLi and quad core on top of me winning the lottery Ill be all over it.
-
15+ lbs actually. If I remember correctly, the HP HDX also comes with a carrying case, or at least those from HP do, not sure about the newegg model. That's a very nice price on the HDX. If I was looking for a somewhat portable desktop, that would probably be it. The HDX used to come with a very decent mid-range card, the 2600 XT, it's good to see them offering the 8800M GTS in it.

Yeah, i understood the media PC part to it. But such a great design i hate they didnt explore it any further. Of course even having the 8800 is a good Uprade IMO, but still i think the case is for the most part hollow. Alot of hardware could have been put in there and then they could have left it up to the consumer to choose what they wanted. Because i would loeve a 20in laptop but unfortunatly the HDX doesnt really offer me anything(except the screen) over the FX So i never could justify the price for a worse preforming laptop.
Though heres hoping that Gateway will bring out a 20in FX eventually with a few more options (SLI 9800's and a 3rd or even a 4th HD bay) and a price tag of 2500 or less. becasue lets face it, if they can put out the 7811 for 1450.00 then they sould easily be able to get all of that in for 2500 or so.
by the by i'm suprised no one has laughed at how i spelled "Real Estate" re-reading my post i feel like an idiot.
Ah, well even at 15-18 pounds its still not a huge weight. but i didnt know about its HP offical carry case. Thats nice, because i have a feeling finding something else that would fit it might be a pain in the butt. -
You're just lucky I missed it. I'll laugh at your "by the by" if you'd like?
I doubt Gateway will be pulling that though. It takes a substantial customer base to pull off huge models like the HDX or M2010. By customer base, I meant users who are familiar and like the products. Gateway's reputation compared to Dell/HP tends to be less positive and lower quality. -

"by the by" is a perfectly good term... us sotherners are always being picked on for how we talk
True, i dont suppose gateway will ever live down its bad years. But they have come ALONG way since then. I used to wouldnt touch a gateway with some one elses 10 foot pole, but their recent computers have made me change my mind, especially the FX line.
A boy can dream cant he. [dreams of 20in uber FX computer] -
Yeah the 8800gts upgrade was nice, but at the time why spend well over $2k for something you can get in a 17in more portable model and then buid a nice desktop that will out game the HDX. I really do hope HP does revisit the HDX as Id love to see a gaming monster.
When did gateway go wrong? My 2004 gateway laptop is still like new after all its been through(im really tough on my laptops...and I mean realy really tough). -
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
me to, because i was so looking forward to the HDX... but the cost was wrong and the hardware didnt fit. So maybe someday soon we'll all get a 20in laptop thats built for hard core usage.
As to gateways bad years...
[waves hands in air to start flash back fade away] duudu du lo, duudu du lo, duudu du lo
It all started started when the battle was basically between them and dell circa 1997... for quite a few years their products were getting very low reviews and alot of people still buy into it.
I know i did; i had to see the FX line before i would even look at a gateway again. Call it sheep mentality or well placed propaganda, but gateways name was trash for 5 or 6 years while dell started taking over the industry. Most of it probably wasnt true, but you know how it goes in the computer world.
Sager used to be crap but now they are the cats meow, so any of the businesses go through highs and lows i suppose. And i guess word of mouth has alotto do with that. Luckily the internet is here to help us discover the truth of thing (or at least listen to people b**** about what they consider the truth of things
-
Agreed.
All you had to say was 1997 and I would have replied with "meh my compaq is fine at the moment". -
Mmmm 1997. The days of Math Blaster, The Magic School Bus, and 32 MB of Ram.

Hey my pentium 333 kicked major butt back then! And i was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Starcraft if i'm not mistaken...cause you know i was tired of warcraft 2 by that point.
gods i'm getting old
-
Possibly, SC was only released in 1998 though. I was enjoying Total Annihilation.
-
I remember trying to run Starcraft on my vintage pentium 120mhz LOL!
-
Lmao, it still turns on? I remember coming home from comp usa back in the 90's with a packard bell...
Peice of junk... Packard Bell = eMachines -
You can't forget Treasure Mountain now!
-
Oregon Trail anyone??
-
Oh yeah. That's the first disc I'm going to let rip in my new laptop!
-
Leisure Suit Larry.
-
Larry came before the fascination with rodents eh?
-
I've always loved threads that get as off-topic as this one
Keeps things interesting. -
I wonder if this laptop will run it on max settings? lol
-
Indeed. Larry was a pimp.
-
Did Larry come before baby oil?
-
Nothing quite like getting a game over because you didn't use protection.... STD's FTL
-
Yes. By several years. I didnt discover baby oil until I got engaged to a girl at a strip joint.
-
Them secrets just keep spilling out of ya.
-
Avatar says it all.
-
Yes. I bear resemblance to Oliver North.
-
HAHAHAHAHAHA! Thats GREAT!

You must spend a lot of time with Dook.

He inspired me

RRROFL at your av!

so ermmm ... any new news on the 6860 replacement or is this not off-topic enough?
Also is there anything about a P-173XL replacement? Basically a P-7811FX with a better CPU and maybe a GT or GTX (dunno).
Since Gateway is going retail maybe the add more models to their retail stores. -
Probably not. The XL models were Gateway retail only models until this decision was made. I would imagine it's possible to have multiple models, as they had the cheaper P series available at retailers, but the GT/GTX is probably out of question.
-
Its just that I just see me getting this laptop and trying to upgrade the CPU to a p9500 and having the same experience as in the "I'm on my last leg" thread. I tend to have bad luck so it would not surprise me that I end up using baby oil trying to clean the cpu gunk
and fail.
So I was thinking it was better to have it already installed than getting a bottle of baby oil and a blowtorch and try to do it myself
-
Well, the P8400 is a very capable chip, there isn't very much reason to go for the P9500.
-
Ya i would get the machine first run some benchmarks games etc, then if your still not happy with the performance worry about it . theres no reason at this point to rush out and buy a new cpu for a machine that no one has tested yet, not to mention the early prices for the montevina chips are probably going to crazy high and wont justify the price/performance ratio.
-
Actually they tested this chip on cnet.com in other laptop and it came out the last in all CPU benchmarks compared to T9300.
So I'm kinda scared... -
They're actually relatively cheap, inline with the Penryn releases. The P8400 retails for around 200-240. The P9500 can be got at 360-380. Prices will go down.
-
ya i read the test on cnet before but that wasnt in a game machine so like i said just see if all your current games apps run well and go from there , as for the cpu prices i didnt know that the cpu prices were already that low so thats a good sign they should drop somewhat fast enough to justify an upgrade. i have a t9300 in mine and i know it made quite a big improvement over the stock cpu but the stock one in the 7811 seems to be quite abit better of the stock one in the 6860 i guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.
-
oh yeah the p8400 is a good cpu, I just wanted "slowest" one with the highest cache since my work involve high speed computations and every little bit helps. Lately I have began to consider a desktop and a ultra portable for presentations and movie watching on the plane.
I just flip flop a lot between desktop/ultraportable and desktop replacement because then I start thinking that I don't need a desktop since I can use one of the various cluster at work by connecting remotely from by desktop replacement laptop. Then I loop this and never decide. -
SOOOOO, when is it going to be sold online???
-
Its not. Gateway closed their direct sales division. Well let me rephrase that, its not going to be sold online from Gateway. You can find it for online purchase from vendors.
-
Well I know that. I mean when is it going to be up on the Best Buy website? I'm hoping I wont have to take the one hour drive to the closest Best Buy.
-
Most likely the same day it hard launches.
-
Best Buy will obviously place it online. Don't fret.
-
Just one last quick question, how does the 9700GTS stack up to the 9800GTS?
-
8600m GT << 8700m GT < 9600m GT < 9700m GT < 8800m GTS < 9800m GTS
-
How much I prefer other brands....
Toshiba < < Dell < < Asus < < Gateway
6860 Replacement due within 3-4 weeks
