and then try and update your video drivers. www.laptopvideo2go.com
i would....if i had it.

Is there room to add a second hard drive? I'm lazy and like to stick hd's from previous systems as pure storage drives when possible.
-
Descent was an awesome game! I remember playing that on my p1 a long time ago...ahh memories.
-
The accusation is that the 9xxx series is also affected, but the source doesn't have any supporting evidence.
-
Hey, that looks just like my 6860! Lol. Nice pics.
-
I remember descent also! Another favorite for me was demolition derby. I remember the like 1000 game packs that had all trial games. Oh the days of our 150mhz Gateway 2000, it had the best features ever, like a microphone, and the ATI RAGE video card!!! Even Windows PLUS! Oh yeah we had the cool pointers... It's kinda cool to be going back to Gateway... Too bad this one doesn't come in the sweet cow box.
Can you take a picture of the desktop on the hi res screen? I'm curious as to how small everything is.
-
Can you run the MKZ benchmark at 1680x1050? Thanks.
-
I can tell you're lazy because this was answered already
. Yes, there is a second slot for a second HDD.
-
in this pic on the first pageit shows the the hard drive bay, which is the double wide bay closest to the front of the laptop
-
I only have those two options
Played some TF:2 on the system, its FPS limited by the CPU which is a bit of a downer. Drops to about 25fps on 2fort when looking at crazy action on the bridge and the settings stick if you raise or lower the res. I really wish they would have made the Source engine dual core friendly with all the physics processing it's doing. -
The GPU is actually the bottleneck. The Dual core Intels are way ahead of games and a P8400 will rarely be a bottleneck for any game unless its very CPU intensive such as an RTS.
My computer never dips below 40 in TF2 at 1680x1050 max settings with 4xAA and 4xAF (which is all you will ever need in TF2 as aliasing is practically non-existent) so maybe turn down your resolution or your AA/AF. -
Odd. I was under the impression that Source games were actually quite CPU dependent as well.
-
Yes, I know there are new accusations, but there are cold dead laptops with grieving widows and orphans wailing over their GO76,84,86's corpses as proof positive. Everything else is a nasty rumor at this point. I find it hard to believe nVidia kept screwing up on new models even after they knew the problem. Of course it could be a brand spanking new problem. I'm ticked because I much prefer nVidia to ATI.
Speaking as a proud GO7600 owner (as of yet).
Which is why I'm lurking around the Gateway thread ... planning ahead.
-
Sorry dude you are wrong. Source based games are extremely CPU bound. The Core [email protected] while fast is still a bottleneck. Even its a slight bottle neck for the gpu as well.
-
hey wong you said you had insurance, did you get the bestbuy 3 year one or a different one?
-
Can you please take a picture of the desktop at 1920x1280???? I'd really like to see what it looks like.
-
Sorry, dude.
-
holy sheit batman.....maybe ill re-think upgrading the screen on this one. -
Thats so cool, thank you for the quick response! I like having lots o room.
I'm on my sisters laptop which is 14" and I can't stand having so little room to work with...
-
Omg, you people with the gateways 7811 are lucky...i've been calling nonstop to all my local best buys and none of them have it...btw, i live in the bay area in california and i was wondering if any of you guys know where to get one.
-
25 fps in TF2... sheesh
-
i dont even get that low...with everything on high 16xQsAA
-
did you try 1920x1200
?
-
like I said it doesnt change when I max out the graphics. Also its only flickers of 25 fps as busy as it gets. Its all riding on that CPU overall not the worst thing in the world though.
-
yeah I was going to say that I thought the P-6860Fx was a "1440 x 900" laptop so it was a unfair comparison
-
driver issue....try re installling i guess..
-
reinstalled the new drivers calling my gfx card a 9800gt too make it work again. Same results in TF2 I really think that the cpu is the limiting factor since it doesnt use more than one core and tf2 gets very busy. CS:S runs great, only super light flickers under 60fps under insane situations and I haven't seen it dip in anything but spectator.
-
still, it should max TF2, with no problems at all.
-
Wong, can u post UT3 benchs pls?
-
Got mine last night, haven't had a chance to load anything special as I was xfering things off a dying hd. Bought Crysis and can't wait to check it out!
-
i get the same problems as him. thats why i was wondering if you could play tf2 to see how it runs with your cpu.
-
Just an FYI to those wanting to get one of these machines. I just picked mine up from the local bestbuy last night...I put my two WD Scorpio drives in it to see if i could configure them in Raid-0 (Like i was able to do on the previous generation of this laptop). There is NO OPTION FOR RAID....JUST IDE and AHCI
They removed the raid option on at least this Best buy model....so in my mind the older generation of this laptop the P-68XX models are a better deal than the new one. I love having raid-0 so it's a bummer for me on this 7811-FX.
-Scotty -
Ahh everyone is getting theirs and our stores still all say unavailable!!!!
-
Sorry if this sounds stupid but I thought the HDD that came with the FX was SATA, not IDE?
-
that is ide compatibility mode
-
So we can't raid them? Can the bios be modded? FFS I already bought my second HDD it's in the mail...
-
Wow if this new chipset doesn't have raid then this is a huge letdown.
-
Well, if there's no RAID, I won't be purchasing this model. ****. This sucks.
-
That makes 0 sense that they would have removed the raid option.
-
I called gateway to ask and they had no idea what i was talking about (although they did happily assure me I could put in a second hard drive lol).
Sorry to those of you who can't get it to work. -
well... raid or not raid... still is a gaming notebook... if i wanted to buy a notebook just for storage and managing files faster i would get.... who knows? 103 external hdd of 1 TB each with raid and a 100 bucks notebook?
im happy with price and specs... !"#3 the raid
nah nah jjk jk... i just dunt care that much of storage as long as there is a nice proccessor and a nice vcard.. and this have a lot of that
.
im not even mad cuz it doesnt have bluetooth nor fingaprint reader...
bluetooth i can get for 20 bucks a very very small adapter fos usb
fingaprint... never had one so wtf
hell, im not even mad bcause of the misserable 3 usb slots... WTF??? 17 inches and only 3? it would fit at least 20
im no mad cuz there are more options... but this is the real bang
btw... does this heat? would i even need a cooler? ere there even notebooks cooler for 17 incheS? where?
greetings ^^ -
So far from what i can tell from the device manager...it has the raid feature capability in the system....HOWEVER, no matter what drives you put in the option to select raid is NOT available in the BIOS.....so it is like they left it out of the bios...hopefully, they will release a BIOS update that will allow the selection of RAID as an option.
-Scotty
PS: Also maybe it is that we have some of the first units off the production line and they just didnt add it to this revision of the bios. -
do you have the Intel Matrix Storage Manager program installed ?
-
So some bios update in the future will probably resolve that? Jesus I didn't realize people flip out so much over raid. I guess everyone here has to be 4 seconds into the game server before everyone else.
-
orrrr, maybe it could be that raid offers a significant amount of speed increase to MANY different things... and some of us bought a second hard drive (or even two completely new matching hard drives) completely for this purpose.... hmmm, which one is more likely to make us "flip out", getting into a server 4 seconds later? or spending $300 on two hard drives assuming that you can raid them, and then finding out you can't?
Love people who think that because something doesn't matter much to them, its abnormal for it to matter much to others...
-
well that is why u double and triple check if it offers raid or not before going out to buy 300 bucks worth of hd. the point of all this is do not assume things.
-
IMO Raid-0 is not that important for ME since the selected performance gains don't affect me that much ... On average there is like 2-3% improvement on everyday normal applications. If you care about benchmarks I guess it is awesome since you get better score that don't translate all that well into real life usage. I guess if I copied a bunch of huge files, extracted a bunch of files from rar/7z or encoded media 24/7 I would care more.
Anyway it is better to have it and not use it that not having it at all :\ -
Reason 1 that I didn't "double and triple check": In case you don't know how raid works on these laptops, and it's obvious you don't, there is no option for raid in the bios UNTIL you put a second hard drive in. Considering the southbridge is ICH9M Enhanced, please explain to me how we could tell whether or not the hard drives could raid without putting a second hard drive in? I'm going to ASSUME that you can't answer this question, so I'll just say that maybe you shouldn't suggest something if you don't even know how to do it yourself. Otherwise, please tell me how I could have checked.
Reason 2: Forgive me for not realizing that Gateway would offer a chip with NEWER technology and remove a simple function that was found in older models of this very laptop.
Reason 3: I guess you wanted me to buy the laptop, wait for it to come so that I could check it (since no one at gateway knows wtf raid is) and order the second hard drive if I SOMEHOW could really tell whether or not it could raid. Given I did this, I would not be able to do much with my new laptop since setting the hard drives to raid completely erases them, and so making software installations or modifications while I wait for the second HDD to arrive would be pointless. Leaving your new laptop alone when it's sitting right in front of you is very hard...
So I'd like to hear how you suggest I check whether or not it can raid.. because... well, we have this question we're trying to answer, it's very similar... something like: can the laptop raid? Yeah, considering people that have the laptop and have second HDDs can't even tell whether or not it can raid, I'd like to see you explain how, either that or like I said, don't make suggestions about what we should do since you don't know how. -
some very good points i have to give u a hand. but u still cant assume u can raid. For reason one, u can just buy an affordable raid for less than 300 lets say like 50 to see if u can raid instead of buying with 300 bucks off the back. and for reason 2, youre forgiven. reason 3, customer service sucks and i agree with u there but you should learn to be patience. so what im trying to say is that u can buy like 100 dollars worth of hd of raid from like a local computer place or soemthing and test it out. if it doesnt work, return it DUH! its like buying a ps3 when you onmly own a tv made back in the 80s. u cant assume it will work with everything.
7811-FX Unboxing Pics, I got mine too!
