Given that you keep saying "buy a raid" as if a raid is something you can purchase, I'm more convinced than ever that you don't know what it is you're talking about...
More importantly... can you direct me to magic land where I can buy a computer part, open the package and use it, and then return it?
And even if I could, it's not at all like buying a ps3 when you own a tv made in the 80's. Various technical documents are released for the ps3 that say what it IS and IS NOT compatible with. There's no technical documents for the P-7811 stating whether or not it can raid. Gateway's tech support doesn't even know... or at least not the 3 that I talked to.
-
LOL. I love how everyone was all hell-bent on RAID and had to have it, now they find out they possibly can't use it and now suddenly RAID makes little to no difference.
-
-
hopefully don't have to wait for a bios revision...
-
You guys have to remember that it's not just raid 0, there is also a raid 1.
And for some people it was the make or break situation for them as file integrity is key and allowing that security on a laptop is very handy.
Sure, raid 0 may not be justifiable for some people, but for people who always works with high end systems, people CAN tell the difference.
Not everybody buys this for games, people can use it for autocad/photoshop or whatever professional area that you do and maybe it helps about 2-3% on games, but when you're encoding massive videofiles or mixing music. That extra speed in raid 0 can help you get your work done faster. -

-
Maybe hes thinking of raid bug spray in which case you could probably buy a case of it for that price.
-
Lol, you still wouldn't be able to return it after using it though. I still can't get over him saying "u can buy like 100 dollars worth of hd of raid from like a local computer place or soemthing" lol, doesn't even know what hes arguing about
-
so i have been watching you guys about raid option and am kinda baffled at the fact that they might have disabled that function on the new chipset...
so lets see (and this pertains to the 7811 owners)....
you guys install your 2nd HDD in available bay
enter bios
hit the "advance" tab at the top
look in "quiet boot field"
there should be a line saying "sata raid enable: disable/enable"
*is that function not there?*
if its not, then maybe... just maybe raid 0 is not possible without flashing (though i dont wanna say that) and one more thing, how many of you guys are trying to do raid 0? b/c i kinda just skimmed through this thread and didnt really pay attention to see if it was just 1 person or multiple.
if more people are trying to do raid 0 and you all are getting the same results, then you can kinda justify that raid 0 is outta the question. -
I think only 1 or 2 of us have actually tried because not many have the laptop yet. However many of us want to do this once we do get our laptops. The guy who first reported that he couldn't raid does seem knowledgeable on the topic though.
-
The laptop's real price is close to $1550 after taxes... -.-
I prefer to wait and get it during a sale that Best Buy usually has with new laptops. -
and btw, the steps provided were from 68xx series to enable raid 0, i just wanna make sure that people who are trying to raid are trying to set up raid like us old school 68xx series lol... actually us 6831ers lawl
also, if you, and i mean the owners of the 7811's, are trying to enable raid, what steps are you doing in your trial and error phase? please list them so that all of us know what you are doing and that we can provide some general assistance in your process. -
that's nice of you thanks, I'll have my 7811 tomorrow so I'll let you know.
-
-
finally the stores just received the 7811 in my area... ill have mine either today or tomorrow... hopefully today...

Hey everyone I've been following these forums on the old 6860 and now the new 7811! Does the 7811 come with a recovery disk that does both 32 bit and 64 bit? I believe the 6860 does (correct me if I am wrong though!). I was also curious as someone else was about the memory ddr3 but being pc6400?
-
Yeah it comes with a 64/32bit Vista Premium SP1 OS disk.
-
so? wong.. any bench that actually shows the memmory ddr3 or ddr2 and the actual speed is using?
10x -
Uhh what? The gateway site says 1066, PC8500.
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2008/GodzillaFX/1015641R/1015641Rsp2.shtml
Now, the BestBuy site, as well as some rumors, say that it's PC6400. Can anyone with an actual machine verify? -

Conversation with Gateway: Take 2
(After being transferred to tech support from a 5 min convo with customer service)
Me: Hi I'm calling with a question about your new laptop, the P-7811.
TS: Ok, let me bring that up, the P-78?
Me: P-7811, yes.
TS: Ok, my question is.. is it a convertible or is (trails off), ok, I have that in front of me.
Me: Alright well theres a small discrepancy with the memory type. The Best Buy website says that the ram is PC6400, which would mean that it's 800Mhz. The specifications on your website say that it's 1066Mhz which would mean that it's PC8500 type. Could you tell me which one it is?
TS: I'm showing here.... PC8400.
Me: 8400? Really? and that's 1066Mhz?
TS: Yes, it says 1066Mhz.
Me: Oh, ok, thanks.
TS: You're welcome. Do you have-
Me: -Wait, where are you looking?
TS: At the specifications on the website.
Me: And you said it shows PC8400?
TS: Yes, PC8400, 1066Mhz.
Me: Ok, are you sure it doesn't say P8400 where you're looking?
TS: Yes, it says P8400, 1066Mhz.
Me: Ok, I'm talking about the Ram, I think you're looking at the CPU.
TS: ...The RAM, I don't see that here.
Me: Look under "memory."
TS: Ok, I'm showing 1066Mhz.
Me: Right, my question is if that's PC8500 type? You see, saying that it's 1066Mhz would mean that it's PC8500 type, but the best buy website lists it as PC6400, which would mean that it's 800Mhz. Could you tell me which it is?
TS: Hmm, the only thing I'm seeing here is P8400 FSB 1066Mhz.
Me: Right I realize it's very similar but that's the CPU, I'm trying to figure out the RAM...
TS: Well for the ram, all I show is 1066Mhz.
Me: Ok, you don't have any more detailed information?
TS: No sir I don't.
Me: Thanks for your help.
TS: You're welcome, you have a good day.
Me: Wait one more question, if I take my chances with this and buy it, and the ram turns out to be 800Mhz, will you guys upgrade it for me for free?
TS: You would have to talk to tiger direct, they take care of our upgrades now.
Me: But they don't sell the laptop.
TS: Sorry sir, they're in charge of that division.
Me: Thanks, bye.
TS: Have a good day sir.
AHHHHHHHHH -
Lol that seems pretty normal considering my experience with virtually every tech support service I have called.
I had my wife pic up one at the Best Buy near where she works, I guess I will find out for sure later tonight. Truthfully it won't matter all that much to me but I will be annoyed a lil if it is 800mhz. -
Sorry to ruin the suprise..but happy to quell the rumors.
See pic below for the results! Is it PC6400, or PC8500?Attached Files:

This might shed light on the raid issue. This document is on gateways site. Open the PDF and search for RAID.
http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Mobile/8513074.pdf
**EDIT**I have confirmed Raid is an option. Upon bootup, press F2 and go to the advance tab. It supports Intel's Matrix Raid of 0 and 1. -
Awesome awesome! Wanted the ability to do 32 bit in case I've issues with older software and is very nice to see the faster ram! Would love to see some pictures of what the thing came boxed with if possible by anyone of you owners. Will be picking one up when I get back home to the states!
-
They must be awesome. People are so dang busy playing with them they can't even report in.
-
How do I get one in Perth, Western Australia?
-
You get someone in the states to buy it and ship it to you.
-
Can not be happier knowing that the battery is finally not sticking out like the previous model, finally!!!
-
-
Err i think the new ones have the same battery as the old ones in his pics he doesnt even have the battery in yet .
-
-
Yep, that was a suprise to me but after a couple of years using my old Sager 9750/Clevo 900k I about crapped myself when I realized I had that much battery life. I was expecting less than an hour to 1:20.
-
lol good point, the battery may stick out in the back, but its 9 cell vs the 8 cell that you normally see
-
i get 3 hours on my "old" p6831 i ma sure that with some power tweaking you guys can hit 3:30 easily.
