I recently purchased a P-173X FX from gateway. I had read on these forums that the Norton Anti virus program was crap and that I should look for something better. I use the laptop for gaming, school and work. What are some good suggestions as to which anti virus program I get. Thanks for the help.

NOD32, Kaspersky, BitDefender, AVG are a few. I recommend NOD32.

Kaspersky looks to be fairly rated around the net, as does NOD32. Thanks for the suggestions.

Anyone else have a personal favorite?

I use Avira and am very happy with it. Also If you're note running 64 bit vista, download Spyware Doctor from the google pack.

What do people think of avast - my brother who is in the networking/systems business recommended it? I generally don't take advice from my brother unless it has to do with computers. Should I expand my restrictions further? :)

AVAST is considered the bottom rung of Anti-Virus protection and there are many reviews confirming such. That being said, I have used the free version in the past without major difficulties and/or malware infection, but I am also very careful about what i download and such. It's ok for a free solution, but there are other free AVs out that are better. Also anyone who is truly involved in the IT industry would never recommend Avast(even the paid version) over a commercial solution such as NOD32, Kaspersky, etc. If he did, he wouldn't be in the industry long.

This may or may not be of help to you.
