I'm not undervolted at all so temps may improve. I'd like to see the CPU a little closer to 50 under load.

You'll have to post a guide when yer done
I've been following along and I'm about to run a 3DMark06 with those OC numbers myself and a cleaned version of the 177.85 drivers.

I also have my 7811 sitting on a NZXT notebook cooler.
Edit: I got 9393 with the 698/998/1798 settings with similar temps to yours. Actually my GPU only got to 69, but again I'm stting on a notebook cooler. -

 Congrats..
Now.. Im sorry to both of you, but I dont think I tested a *whole* lot using the p8400.. But I do recall hitting 9700 or so. I don't think I broke 10k.. I know I didn't. The CPU is the only thing holding the comp back. That's besides the point. Just an FYI.. I didn't try overclocking with the 177.85 as it was not released yet when I had P8400. I only had that proc for like, a week. If someone would like to run same clocks and different driver, I'm sure others would appreciate it. I'd recommend the 175.80 stock driver that is part of the back-up drivers. But, ya never know.. the 177.92 may do alright

Anyhow, +rep to anyone breaking 10k and not sueing me.

Syn: You had a crash?
 what happened?
      -
LOL I'm on a cooler too but not that monster of yours. That sounds like one great cooler. Mine is the Zalman 1000.
 -

I've done 0 testing as I'm new to laptops and OC in general. Just never did any of it. So all I really did was put in the driver and toss in his number and see what it kicked out.
Feel free to keep testing though so I can gank yer numbers when yer done!
      -

Hah! Well, be very careful..not your dad or anything, so not gonna lecture. Just know every system is built differently..even if the same model. If you never go any higher than those clocks, you'll be safe. If you do get crazy, then you may risk breaking something
      -

I wasn't sure if there was a way to cancel that error.. so I'll reinstall that driver once again.. Lol..
Is it much better than the 7792? -

I had 150 3D06 better at stock. I think E had more.
 -

Well once this computer is setup with all the information I need for school/work/games/web pages.. and what not I'm launching into my actual project.
I'm switching my desktop to Vista64 bringing it up to 4MB of RAM and going to a 8800GTS and a AMD 5400 brisbane. Then I'm going to OC the hell out of it and see what I can learn.
My wife wants the desktop for Warhammer online but that gives me a couple weeks to mess with it first when it isn't my primary computer!

I think I might buy a EVGA GPU this time around though, you even tried EVGA's Precision Tuner? Sooooooooo much easier to OC with. Not sure if you can reach the same high end results, but for simplicities sake, and stability it's amazing.
(rest of the parts were of OC quality when I built the PC originally) -

I couldn't even get the stock driver to load Mass Effect. So no matter what the marks were on it, didn't seem like a stable driver to me. Just my 2 cents.
 -

I don't know how your scores are 1k over mine.. but there was a difference with the one you suggested E.. thanks a ton.
      -

Ewrecked is running a 3.06ghz processor so his scores are going to be higher if thats what your referring to medieval.
 -

Ah makes sense.. so mine are average for the P-7811FX?
Kinda sad though.. My old Desktop only got 3k with 3dmark06 lol.. -

177.98 is out.. someone go test.. gogogogogo!
 -

When I try to install 177.92 it says it's not compatible. What the heck am I doing wrong?
 -

My 3DMark score owns. It'll probably be even higher tomorrow when I decide which number I wanna type in.
Did you read the guide? Did you download the modified inf? -

Wow Dook..too bad it wasn't a default score, otherwise you'd be on the top of the Orb site, eh?
      -

I was monitoring temps today and I got to thinking.. what are the max temp ranges for the 9800M GTS?
I got up to 74C today w/ the OC figures in while playing Mass Effect and it made me wonder. -

74 is fine.. I believe it maxes at 90-100c, but I've never got near that hot. It will downclock itself in the event the card begins to get to that threshold. I believe mine broke 80 once..got to 81, if I remember correctly. If you reach the 90s..theres a big problem. Any hotter than 70s is running in excess, and you may want to downclock a bit, but I don't think you should have any worries with the clocks and temps you're running.
PS - Spore is released today, and I may be absent for quite a while. I'm gonna be busy playing God. If he did it in seven days, I can too.
EDIT: The 177.98 listed on ltv2go doesn't have a vista 64bit version.. -

Well, after two days of figuring out why the heck Nvidia declocked my GPU and kept it there, I got it fixed (I think). Here is my highest clock so far with 177.92 driver:
Core: 740
Memory: 830
Shader: 1640
      -

Nice results.. Here's a heads up..shader clocks will provide more FPS than memory. Core & Shader should usually be pushed about 1:2.5 ratio, but I find that 1:2.6 is optimal. Meaning, 700 core = 1750 shader at 1:2.5 and 700 = 1820 at 2.6. Just a shot in the dark.. but give these clocks a try; 710/898/1820, benchmark and record results. Then try with 1720 as shader, you'll notice a considerable difference. No need to clock the core past 733, it will begin stealing performance. Meemory probably doesnt need to break 1000, and shader maxes in the low 1900s for me..Remember though, high clocks and high 3dmarks dont mean great gameplay FPS. Think stability, and TEST TEST TEST before settling on a "stable" clock setting.
On a side note, I went into control panel and went to "3D Settings ->Manage 3D Settings" - Make sure multi-display/mixed gpu acceleration is set to single display mode. I forgot to mention, in case no one was aware.. These settings seem to reset every time a new video driver is installed..make sure you set them back to your preferred settings.
And these settings in the control panel are crucial to know, and they will have an impact on benchmark *and* game performance. -

Thanks E-wrecked for the headsup. I shall try all your advices =)
 -
You are correct on the multi-display/mixed gpu setting. I set to single and gained 60 points. Good call. I have never been very meticulous on gpu oc. More on the cpu oc front.
 -

alright....here we go again. this is done after installing the 177.85 xfastest driver and turning the multi-display/mixed gpu acceleration to single display performance. im not sure why 3dmark06 defaulted to 1280x800, but in my other tests it defaulted to 1280x854.
so here goes.
@ stock clocks

@ stock 9800m gts clocks

looks like its back to 177.89 for me. -

Is that 9k overclocked? I'm pulling 8.7 with Xfastest's driver.
 -

yup thats 9k overclocked. i overclocked my 8800GTS (500/799/1250) to 9800GTS clocks (600/800/1500)
 -

may i ask what you used for gpu oc? nvidia's oc tool or riva tuner? also are u using any extra cooling devices?
thanks -

i use nvidia system tools with esa support. downloaded here and i use an NZXT Cryo LX notebook cooler.
 -

Ok... I'm trying to get my first 3Dmark06 reading on my new 7811FX (first PC/Laptop for gaming here). And the 3DMark06 doesn't want to install, I downloaded the free version, but that doesn't even want to install on my Vista 64Bits, even if I press "Run as Administrator" option.
Anyone can help me in here? (BTW I updated my Nvidia 9800GTS drivers with Xfaster ver and I used the Modified inf). -

Woot, I wanted to break 9200 marks and I accidentally broke the 9300 mark, oops.
      -

what is a safe temp range for gpu under the load? Video Card Stability Test few days ago for 36 mins, the max reached temp was 77, today 80c after 20mins. Thats with stock gpu settings and xfastest 177.85. 3dmark06 scored in low/mid 8600's.
Also i oc'ed my gpu little bit (650/850/1560) and ran test again. After 21 minutes the max temp 82 was. Gpu scored 88sometin on 3dmark06 (oc).
665/900/1700, max75c, gpu stability test for 8 mins, idle 38c, 3dmark06 9106.
What gpu temps are you getting ? -

Keep in mind, he's running the 6860FX not the 7811FX.
Every card has different performance gains and losses based on the driver. In my experience, the 9800m GTS performs best with the 177.85, and others post same results.. but whatever. If you found your driver, roll with it.

Syn, your charging block has groves in it..yes? I have a reasoning behind this question.. The 4 of these that I have been through(I'm picky), the 2 stable ones had grooves in the power brick, and also had the larger CPU heatsink.. Unfortunately a dead pixel made me give one of those back. This is the other one. The 2 that had issues had the smaller heatsink and a smoothe power brick. Pic of "smaller" heatsink is below. This isn't what yours looks like is it?

E - My block is smooth. Have not been inside the old girl yet so don't know about heat sink. Thanks for the pic. I'll take a peak next day or two and get back to you.
Now you have me worried but still no hickup. I just tried my first game, Company of Heroes. Never played it before so don't know how challenging it is to the system. Played it for several hours with no problems. GPU top was 70C and I am OC. CPU temp max was 56C. Ambient low 70's F. I don't have Crysis.
Game Review:
I can see where COH is fun multiplayer. It is a pain in the butt single player ... but they all are at the start. It woops me on Easy after I beat it into a corner! Dang thing is cheating I'm sure of it. -

No worries.. maybe Im more concerned cause of the CPU swap.
COD blasts my temps, so if youre hittin 70 I think you're solid

      -

Finally got 3DMark06 running, anyways here are my scores, not bad for my first overclocking.

Not bad at all.. you're gettin close

Dook, what's your 3dmark score today? -
 Good job.
Game Review (vindicated):
Just smoked COH on Easy. Took no prisoners ... total devastation.
Oh ya ... didn't lock up. GPU temp max 76c. 1920x1200 very smooth and beautiful. That is still a reasonable temp for typical gpu but who knows about these crappy Nvidia mobiles they have been making. But who wants to think about that? Hopefully that's all behind us. (fingers crossed)
E-wrecked - nice Avy braggin' about your benchies.
      -

I never went past 70C on the GPU in any of my OC.
Edit:
This is my latest OC (again, GPU never went past 70C, the max HWMonitor recorded was 68C). I can't get past these marks cause a small tweak will cause 3DMark to crash =/. I'll try when I have more time since I'll be moving in about 12 hours to my new home ^^

Thanks guys, after reading a lot of your stuff and figuring stuff myself (thanks to google too lol) I got everything going. Yet I'm seen that my Laptop doesn't top the 60C of temperature while gaming Gears Of War, I have everything in hight, but I don't go too high on resolution, I don't see the need of that.
Still my temperatures are quite low compared to what you guys have, I have only played 1 hr max, but is still a good amount of time. Maybe is because I have my laptop on top of a shoe box and all the vents are like 3 inches off the floor? It seems to work fine this method I use, even if it sounds funny. -

As a heads up.. I downloaded the new 177.98 for Vista 64..bout to 3dmark it. I'll let y'all know what happens.
EDIT:
10576 with 177.98 vs 10803 with 177.85 running same OC @ 698/988/1798. Back to Xfastest. -

Good to know I don't have to re-do a driver already.

Thanks for testing that E. -

okay.. yer 100 points higher then me and I'm running the same OC's on the vid card. Did you OC the CPU or do something else?
Edit: Nevermind, I forgot about your CPU, lol. -

just tested new OEM 176.15 driver download available on gateway's support site...seems ok. Runs about same as xfastest..but let me OC a bit more. New high score..

E, could you please do me a favor and give me the link to the above ORB result? A guy I work with got a 7811 and put this in today and were trying to do some comparisons(I had him install 176.15 as the lv2g drivers were acting weird). There aren't many 9800s with the x9100 to compare with and I couldnt find yours via orb search(there's only 1 C2D extreme found running vista(surprisingly) and i didnt search by gpu as yours is listed as generic) and the link shown in the above image is private or deleted. Thanks!
 -

 Dook,
I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong or not.. But I can't make the results public. I've tried, and tried, and tried. I believe it's because of ORBs "Please note that this result has been produced using display drivers which have not been validated or approved by Futuremark and will not be visible on default result search on the ORB or on the Hall of Fame. For a list of currently approved display drivers for your hardware, click here" BS. I can screen shot and post eveeything..but that's the best Ive got for ya. -

E-wreck, you can only have one score published at a time. It should allow you to let the public see it, but like you said, it won't be eligible for the whole "hall of fame" thing.
 -

LOL! Hall of Fame of the internet!
 -

 Ahhhhh.... Lemme try
 +rep if so

D@mn thing wont let me make anything public..and none aof my previous will go public either. I bought vantage and 3dmark06, it's not a trial account. I used to have several public. It seems there is an issue with orb right now. -

Is anyone out there not getting the "performance" tab after installing 6.02 System tools on Vista 64? Anyone know how to fix that?
