After looking at the dissasembly guide up top in the stickies.... I actually don't think it's my GPU doing this.... It's coming from the left side of the laptop which is the side with the DVD drive...
Cept there's no disc in there..
So unless the noise just sounds like it's coming from the left and it's actually on the right then it's not the GPU doing that...
Although I did notice last night task manager is showing my CPU running at 100% almost all the time but I don't notice any performance issues?

If so wouldn't that make it the right side when it's flipped back over? -
That is the CPU fan not GPU..............

ok my bad
the Asus I had was different heh.
-
Hay Andros, your link to your gpu bios flashing kit.zip isn't working, says that there's no file located there, is it still up?
UPDATE
In my hubris, i didn't read the above posts about using 7zip -
I'm about to try this solution after months of crashes in games such as WoW and SC II.
If this works, Andros, I will worship the very ground you walk on.
I've tried what seems like hundreds of other types of fixes, to no avail.... Let's see if this one works.
Erik
EDIT
For some reason the first time I opened up wow, my system couldn't use my video card, so i had to update it again to re-brand it in. Still being optimistic that this will indeed work. Here's the message i'm getting from windows, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
UPDATE
I was just playing wow when it did the same blackscreen crash. This didn't fix anything... anyone please help me fix my lappy -
did you try disabling powermizer?
-
Powermizer and Rivatuner are both off
or at least, in my Nvidia powermizer program, the fixed preformance level is Max. Pref / Min. Powersave on both battery and AC adapter.
Please somebody help me. -
If not, you might just have a faulty GPU -
do you presently over clock the video? Also when is the last time you have cleaned or repasted the GPU chip and cooling?
If you are OC's try stock clocking the GPU. Even with this if you continue to get those black screens you could either be overheating the chip or even if it says temps are ok you could just be spot overheating both of which can permanently damage the system.
Gateway FX series systems are famous for needing frequent and regular cleaning of the cooling systems. Moving alot of air mean dust and other goodies too. Our systems will clog up regularlly.
Another thing is the original TIM. It was a cheap liquid and tends to crack and/or boil out. Many a thread here help you fix and maintain the cooling. The problem can be if you wait until problems to show from cooling the damage may become irreversable. Many a thread on that subject as well. -
I've had mine for about two months now, and it's very... unstable. Today I played New Vegas for an hour, then mass effect 2 for 2 and a half hours. Before either of those I played Oblivion for 5 minutes and it black screened and crashed. I updated the bios with the Gateway made update, and the screen problems and driver crashes stopped. I power mized it, slow down GPU core only max perf, min power save. It some times crashes when I play san andreas. Crashed once when I was using the GECK editor.
I don't get why it can't handle Oblivion. I'm not anywhere near maxed out settings on any game I play. I don't even use antialias. Without power mizer and the bios update, this thing crashed if someone in Pakistan farted. Now it's will it crash? How long do I have to play before it does? Can I play all day, or for five minutes? -
Just realized i need to gut out my laptop because it's usually running at extremely high temps, usually around 80c, and that's just not right
Edit
Just cleaned enough air from both fans to free up about 50% of their intakes respectively. -
The nVidia 9800m in the FX's is known to have a bios issue with GPU memory timing switching between 2D and 3D speeds. Having powermizer disabled limits this memory speed switch. The system has some other issues as well.
While the cooling in pristine condition works well there is a devil in the mix. Having the needed enhnced air flow also alows other particulates in. The problem then is a clog and reduced cooling capability. The other problem is actually the clocks.
Most systems from lack of cooling actually underclocked stock the GPU and memory. This reduced power and cooling requirements. Our problems are two fold as we are stock clocked and because of the initial numbers alot of users are overclocking their GPU's.
This problem is further enhanced my poor maintenance and the system itself. The lowly power supply being over stressed, the cooling system not being properly kept up with and also the fact this is an econo system and the TIM needs to be replaced and improved.
Another issue often over looked is the power brick. Over time these supply less power and even new for a stock P7xxx these are barely minimal. Under supplied power will have the same effect to the components as running the system overclocked beyond stability and leaving it there. This is why I have always used a 180w Targus power supply. An under supplying brick will cause stability issues and can KILL your system. -
Well, I played new vegas and mass effect 2 again last night for a combined 3 hours, no problems at all. I tried oblivion with max performance in the nvidia GPU control, and as I expected it had no effect. Five minutes, black screen and crash. Then played ME2 for an hour and no issues. I'm getting low temps. I keep it elevated, and since it's nearly winter, it's freezing in here right now. But even yesterday when I had my heat on, the thing did not crash while I played ME2 and it got hot in here. Nhancer does not work on my system for whatever reason, so I can't use that as an option.
I can't find any solution as to why it's having problems playing oblivion and some older games. In new vegas I was popping off hundreds of nukes and didn't even lose framerates. But in Oblivion it crashes when I stand still in an interior. -
My normal temps on my videocard are really odd, it goes from 67C to about 83C in a matter of 60 seconds, and then the fan kicks in, cooling it down to 67C again.... i don't understand why my running temp is to high, especially after i meticulously cleaned the fans / heatsinks / vents
-
I have tried everything and Oblivion crashes 5 or so minutes in. I finished mass effect 2, and filmed Machinima in fallout 3 for an hour. It did black and crash once, but is generally stable.
I just don't get it... -
I don't get it either. I think some games just won't run because of some obscure setting or some weird registry entry or what have you. You will see my post about the Marathon game not running on my P7805u. That game has been out there for many years but causes BSOD on my computer. It runs on Apples, Linux, Win XP, Win 7 but not my computer. Go figure.

you did try this right?
nVidia Black Screen Fix
Version: 1.0.0
By: Quarn ([email protected])
|Description|
This mod fixes the annoying black screen bug that afflicts nVidia cards.
This bug happens when:
-You have a nVidia card (tested and confirmed on 8800GTX\GTS).
-HDR is enabled or no screen effect is enabled, bloom isn't affected.
-You're in an interior cell with NPC's.
-The interior cell has the Fog Near, Far and Clip Dist all set to 0.
What this mod does is set the Fog Near to 0.0001 (doesn't make is look any different at all) in any interior cell that has 0 for Near, Far and Clip Dist which prevents this bug from occurring.
|Notes, Known Issues and Incompatibilities|
-If you are still getting this black screen bug then either of 2 things are happening: something has overridden the changes of nVidia Black Screen Fix or it's a new cell added by a mod.
-This mod also fixes a related bug where your hands and arms turn white (when no armor/clothes are worn over them) on certain angles/areas in cells afflicted with the black screen bug.
-Best to load this mod first (though after Unofficial Oblivion Patch and Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch if you have them).
-Supports the official expansion pack: Shivering Isles. -
No, because when I say black screen and crash, I mean full black screen and computer crash. The typical problem with this machine.
-
Now I can pinpoint where fallout 3 will crash. It has crashed 3 times when I go to the robco building near tenpenny tower.
Very odd since I can detonate nuclear bombs that spreads a smoke and dust effect as far as you can walk for five minutes.
This is full black screen, distorted audio and unresponsiveness from the computer. Not some game bug.
No changes in Nvidia have helped and Power mizer seems to only help about 70%. I now slow down mem and gpu with max perf and min power save, but this makes no significant change either. I shoulda saved my money... -
Oblivion is KNOWN to cause black screen and BSOD's on nvidia cards and it seems mostly on the 9xxx series of cards when you google the issue. So blame the game not the system!
If all else is stable with the powermizer fixes etc and you only have one game erroring the system then logic dictates there is a game/program issue. Keep going after the system and not the true error and you will never get it fixed.............. -
Hello. This Bios Flash is exactly what I need Andros and I was following your steps. Unfortunately when I try unziping the flashing kit I get an invalid archive error.
Can you help? -
WinRAR download and support: Download now Here ya go -
You are a god among men and I bow down to your awesomeness!!
I had the common black screen GPU shutdown issue and this flash almost cured it completely.
Yesterday I had the gpu underclocked by 40% and it was still crashing, today I have it underclocked by 10% and it is running like a dream and a lot cooler than before.
I had almost given up on my beautiful P-7805 and now it gets to live for a few more years.
Thank you, thank you, thank you -
Alright, I'm sick of the black screen and random crashing. I'll try this. Power mizer just doesn't fix everything. I wanted to play Oblivion with mods, but it's impossible because it won't last 5 minutes without a black screen computer crash.
I'm on the bios update 9C.17.00 Is this "fix" going to screw this thing up because of the bios I'm on now? -
And I played Skyrim for an hour and a half last night without a single problem...
I don't get this. Whole computer black screened and crashed 2 minutes into oblivion again today. -
and Merry Xmas!
-
-
I have tried it, and I said it still crashes.
2 hours skyrim, no black screen and crash. Played all the way through new vegas, no black screen crashes. Mass effect 1 and 2 no black screens and crashes. Occasional black screen crash in san andreas. Oblivion will not last more then 5 minutes no matter what. One black screen and crash while using the GECK editor. Black sceen and crash every time I go to the Robco building in fallout3.
Is it game problems? Or GPU problems? I don't know. -
-
3 hours playing saints row 3, and not a single problem. Halo custom edition farting around on a modified blood gulch for two minutes... black screen and crash.
Inconceivable... -
When ever you have an issue with a game please first search for issues with the program. I know it is tempting to come to just one loc, here, and complain however trouble shooting an issue requires proper investigation. If you continue to blatently ignore the common issues and just come here to vocalize your miscontent you will be ignored.
Until you can start addressing your issues properly I am done responding to your posts................... -
I have been having the black screen of death on my P-7805u with 9800m GTS card while playing WoW. I found this forum describing a fix by undervolting the gpu. I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP2 and NVidia 285.62 drivers.
My problem: when I run nvflash -b bios.rom to backup my original bios I get the following error
Adaptor: GeForce 9800M GTS (10DE,0628,107B,0696) H:--:NRM B:01,PCI,D,00,F:00
Identifying EEPROM...
EEPROM ID (20,00FF):UNKNOWN
Error:Supported EEPROM not found
I have tried numerous versions of nvflash including 5.57,5.85, and 5.100 and all give same error.
I have tried the -o level=1 override and get the same error.
Interestingly, when I run NiBitor it also fails to identify my video card even when I select "Run as Administrator".
Also Interestingly GPU-Z identifies my video card correctly and displays all data, but if I try to save a copy of the bios from GPU-Z I get an error: BIOS reading not supported on this device
Pulling what little hair I have left out now... Any ideas to solve this problem so I can flash my gpu bios and end the black screen? -
before doing the bios mod have you tried disabling powermizer? Also be sure the GPU and CPU fans are well cleaned ot and temps are in the norm.
A side question is the GPU overclocked? -
My GPU is not overclocked. I have already cleaned out the fans as that was my original thought that it was overheating. I also use a laptop cooler. I have recently started having the crash within a minute of booting up and playing WoW so no longer think it is a heat issue. Powermizer is disabled and still crashes constantly to black screen.
-
Morton, you say you have the NVidia 285.62 driver. I have installed the 285.79 driver and it worked on my P-7805u with 9800m GTS. Maybe worth the try for you.
-
Haven't tried the beta driver yet, but decided to run my 7805 on battery only and the crashing stopped happening. WoW will normally crash in less than 30 secs if sitting idle in the character login screen. No crashes on battery. I also was able to do all daily quests in the Fire Lands without crashing on battery power. Normally phasing into the Fire Lands crashes me constantly.
On battery power the gpu voltage is throttled down to the .90v setting.
Now back to my original problem... Unable to flash the bios for a permanent voltage fix do to unknown EEPROM. -
Just plugged my AC adapter back in and watched voltage jump back up to 1.11v using HWMonitor and WoW crashed almost immediately, lol. So it seems that the 9800m GTS is unstable at that voltage.
-
It may be time to pull it appart and redo the TIM on the GPU and memory chips. The cheap TIM used in the gateways are well known to become ineffective. You definaetly have an issue as WoW should not cause black screens and since the problem seems to have escalated with time the TIM or cooling becomes highly suspect.
Now it could be over time with coling restrictions you systems chips are becomeing baked and a new TIM will not recover the system to an as new state. This is where it pays over time to be retentive when it comes to maintenance. With these it may not yet apear to be broke but keeping up with cleaning and the TIM on our FX's pays off............... -
I saw a peak of 82 C when on AC adapter. That is with my laptop cooler running. I am sure temps were much higher in the past before I started using the cooler cause the keyboard used to get so hot I could barely touch it. So now you have me thinking this is (was) a heat issue again that has just continued getting worse. I'll try replacing the TIM and see if that helps. Otherwise I am probably needing a new Motherboard then.
Still cant figure out why my bios is unflashable though... -
I think there was two versions of the modded bios one for the P7805 and one for the P7811 as the later only had 512mb so a different device id. This is my best memory, don't quote me on it as a fact.................
-
Tan,
I think you found my problem!!! Less than six months after purchasing my P-7805u back in 2008 I had to send it in for repairs under warranty due to not booting. It appears that Gateway replaced the 7805u motherboard with a 7811 motherboard!!! I noticed GPU-Z was reporting memory for my 9800 as only 512 Mb instead of 1 Gb like I thought it was supposed to be.
Apparently the gpu bios on most 7811's is locked and can not be flashed unless you do some jumper trick on the bios pins 1 and 4 while booting. This explains why I keep getting a EEPROM error when attempting to flash. -
I downloaded Nvidia system tools and underclocked my gpu to 530/630/1300as was mentioned in another thread and system runs completely stable at 1.11v. However, after two hours of playing WoW my gpu temps had soared up to 105 C which is the highest I have noted since installing HWMonitor. I will definately be doing the TIM replacement.
-
-
Some people say that you cant change voltage value because display cards brings it back to the previous one.
I disagree. When I overclocked to higher clocks and set 1.09 or even 1.00, then everything crashed.
When I set to 1.15 everything was OK> -
It's really working, thank you.

Definite solution to the nvlddmkm video crash on the P-7805u!
