I have decided to upgrade my 6831 (again) from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200. I found a screen that will fit the 6831 perfectly:

    Samsung LTN170WU-L02 17" WUXGA 1920x1200 LCD
    Samsung LTN170WU-L03 17" WUXGA 1920x1200 LCD

I'm going to order mine Monday or Tuesday, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks to Spinitch for all the help!!

    Cheers!

I don't understand this. if people are gonna to upgrade the screen plus cpu, why don't they just get a NP5793 instead?

Nirvana0001 thats exactly the analysis I went through. Best case scenario is to replace the screen for $300+ and go to a 9300 for another $350 on top of the $1250 on sale price and your up to $1900 plus tax which makes it equivalent in price to a 5793 (from eurocom you can get the price to about 2176 without OS) which would have a better GTX vs GTS card.

Quadzilla: I do like the 1680x1050, but I after playing with a friends 1920x1200 notebook, I am itching to try it. :)

I'm not sure what the cost is but I figure I have about $1600.00 in it right now. Of course, I also teach at a university so we get discounts with a bunch of vendors. That has helped.

All in all, its been a lot of fun. I also learned how the LCD industry has us all snowed. I would rather buy a high end notebook and put the screen in myself for what they charge. Apple wants $1475.00 to replace a students WXGA LCD in their 15" MBP. What a scam, I told them I could do the replacement (its out of warranty) for around $500.00.

    Cheers!

sager is 3100+ and mine was 2100+ that would be why i went with a gateway.
not to mention the one hard drive

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-8800M-GTS.6934.0.html
dont see your fx 1600m card anywhere close to this card so that means you would have to configure with the gtx card... another $300 on top of the $3100

not really sure what 5793 you guys are looking at, but it isn't the same one i configured from their site, which came close to what i have now.

I just ordered my 5793 from Eurocom for 2176 with a 8800m GTX and a t9300 penryn proc so I am not sure where you are getting $3100 from?

If you live in the US - I can show you how I configured it. True it does not have 2 HDDs but thats the only drawback compared to some significant advantages -- better proc, better build quality (according to board moderators) and better out of the box screen.

Sometimes financially it's easier to spread out payments and upgrades over time rather than throwing it down in one lump sum... It also helps maintain excitement about the notebook, new features, etc.
However, I still have everything stock and one of the reasons I got this notebook is the excellent performance it has out of the box. I'm tempted to swap the t5550 but can't justify it (yet!)

has anyone taken their laptops back to a store near them to see how the new screen fairs against an ultrabright/truebright/dual lamps or any other of super bright laptop screens? best buy/circuit city/ frys/ compusa. if so, let us know your thoughts.

i took mine to best buy and frys and it faired quite well against the sony, but the Fujitsu still showed brighter, but not by much. had about 15 people in the store giving the new screen it's props. so it's not just my bias opinion. *LOL*

    i have an lg screen

Hi, I configured it at www.eurocom.com But you are right the x9000 and the 320 gb drive add $1000 to the price.

However, adding an x9000 to the 6831/6860 will also add 900 - 1000 to that price so I fail to see the comparison basis. WUXGA is what I configured mine with for the $2176 price.

Anyway, I am glad you are happy with what you got -- I came close to making the same one myself but changing the screen and proc brought it very close to the price of the sager/clevo5793/570ru's which is why I went the route I did. Base model the gateway is a great value (perhaps the best out there actually).

you got me there. i configured every 17" notebook they had and not one came anywhere close to 2100 bucks. so i guess you found the buy of the century too...

    $1349.00 - 100.00 comp

    $1249.00 p-6860
    $600.00 x9000
    $325.00 screen lg

im gonna say i came out like a champ for my (mid range gaming notebook) :)

and that price i got direct from sager, didn't see any sagers on erocom.com unless a m75ru is an under cover sager. and that one started at 1879.00 without me even adding the cpu i wanted.

i remember when no one wanted to buy a sager, now they are the thing to have. *LOL* funny how things come full circle.

You can get the X900 for about 500-600, depending on how Ebay decides to treat you.

Eurocom offers a slightly better price than Sager. The 570RU is the Sager. Technically, Sager is the M570RU rebadged.

For an entry level awesome gaming laptop you cant go wrong . i had looked at the sager as well before pulling the trigger. the nice thing about the gateway is that i have an great machine out of the box that can play everything and if and when i decide to upgrade the processor or screen i have the choice . Not to mention bluetooth HDMI 4 gigs of ram 2 HD bays vista 64 all these other choices for the price are nothing to sneeze at .

dont worry, i bought the t9300 and then turned around and bought a x9000. i think i may keep my dv9740us and put the t9300 back in it.

still have yet to see the x9000 below 575.00 seen the x7900 go for 375.00 though.

None if this was meant to criticize by the way. Just to offer an alternative. I came very close to doing the exact same thing you decided to do. I am sure you will have a great machine. And was mentioned the Sager goes by various names.

Also remember that the price is in Canadian dollars on Eurocom's site. If you switch to USD on their selections -- you get much lower prices -- I got 2176 the following way:

    1900 x 1200 screen
    t9300
    2gb ram
    100 gb 7200 rpm drive
    8800m gtx

    no OS

That gets me to 2176 with shipping.

    Hi,

Yeah I ordered it about 8 - 9 days ago. Should be arriving to day -- so when I get back from business travel it should be there.

I paid 2176 usd for what I spec'd -- the same spec looks like its 2235 today. I ordered the t9300 instead of the x9000 and the 100gb 7200 rom default drive instead of the 320gb you wanted. That's probably why the price on what I am looking is so much lower.

The model on their website is under M57RU Divine X.

Actually, 800mhz RAM won't matter. It will downclock anyway.

sorry, but that is a high end notebook and it will run 800mhz ram at 800mhz and not downgrade it. a big plus with going high end.

I'm sorry, the Santa Rosa platform now only supports up tp 667MHz RAM. It is a fact, all low end and high end Santa Rosa laptops can't run 800MHz memory.

The Monteniva platform will be able to run 800MHz RAM, though. Maybe you are thinking of that.

With running 800MHz RAM, it will get downclocked but you may be able to run tigher timings. That itself will speed the computer up, but not that you will be able to see.

Still, that is Santa Rosa and will get down clocked to 667MHz. What I think Eurocom is getting to is that you can run tighter timings by using Memset 3.5 Beta, but I still do not know how they expect all users to do that option.

i understand about the santa rosa now.
but the first link is not based on a santa rosa plateform
    Processor

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E6850 / 4MB L2 Cache, 3.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E8400 / 6MB L2 Cache, 3.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB [+$95.00]
    Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q6600 / 8MB L2 Cache, 2.40GHz, 1066MHz FSB [+$45.00]
    Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q6700 / 8MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz, 1066MHz FSB [+$100.00]

and your right about memsetbeta. i use that as well to clock at 5-4-4-11 or 12.

i did try 800 mhz ram and it will run at 4-4-4-11 or 12.

read up on the santa rosa and apparently intel said something about it was a 1 to 4 percent increase from 667 to 800 so they left it at 667. and they said some other technical stuff..lol

Like mentioned earlier, 800mhz for the 5793 is pointless, it will downclock.
What is eurocom doing? To put it harshly, you might call it cheating unwitting buyers of their cash.

Sorry to burst your happy RAM bubble. :D

I'm fully aware that you were talking about the 9262 when posting specs, since the 5793 doesn't use desktop processors. However, you were advising him to get the 800mhz RAM for the 5793, which would have been a largely pointless upgrade, that's what we were disagreeing with.

    Back to topic.

@ OP, have you ordered the new screen yet?

The only problem is that I didn't miss anything. You thought I did and I'll accept that. Which is why I bothered to point it out in a later post. With that, I'm out, this is going nowhere.
